Came here after looking at yelp post and food pic. I was sold on the pancake and omelet but was a let down. Pancake was rubbery the omelet egg was thin and they just put the veggies I. The inside and fold it over. Veggies never stuck to the egg. Sausage also was the store bought 99c pack at least to me. Just a breakfast you can cook yourself at home. The owners of Carlos' Country Kitchen came to Kaiser Permanente to get their vaccines. Me and my coworker administered their shots, the wife pulled out business cards, and told us to come enjoy a free meal on them. We enjoyed her company and conversation, she was a comedy show all on her own. I came by the other weekend and almost OD'd on this extra large Enchilada Omelette with hash browns on the side. The daughter was my waitress and she was delighted to take my order. I couldn't help but notice all the regulars enjoying themselves with breakfast, coffee and laughter. Cozy little breakfast/lunch diner. Been here for years and has the best breakfast in town! I always get the chicken fried CHICKEN! If you love a chicken fried steak, you're gonna go crazy for this. Just exactly the same but with chicken breast butterflied, battered and covered in country gravy. Carlos and his daughter still work there everyday. Carlos' is fine, nothing too exciting. There are better breakfast places around town. We showed up on a holiday, so it wasn't too busy. We sat down immediately and given our menu's. Our server came immediately and took our drink order and our coffee's came out fairly quick. That was pretty much the last time we saw anyone bring around coffee. We dang near had to beg for more toward the end of our meal. Anyway...back to he food. I ordered an omelet with hash browns. The omelet comes with four cheese slices, some of which were still cold in the middle. The hashbrowns were overcooked and paper thin. So essentially extra crispy shredded potatoes. As others have stated, portions were huge though. My wife gave me her bacon. Thick cut, but somewhat undercooked. Later she told me, that's why she gave it to me. Wow, thanks! I've been here a few times, I don't mind the setting. I actually kind of like the diner/dive atmosphere. I've just never had a real good meal here. We came today because the place we planned on going was closed (Labor Day) and Carlos' was open. Otherwise this place isn't normally a thought. Food is always big yummy portions, no complaints there and the restaurant is very outdated with old tables and chairs, could use a lil update. Waitress was very nice and accommodating. She took order right away. Only problem is we waited a very, very long time for food to make it to the table, a table came in after us and was served at least 20 minutes before us. I had never been here and thought I'd give this place a try for brunch. Let me start this with: I realize that taste is subjective. But... I ordered a waffle and I thought it would have fresh strawberries on it. What I got was a cold, soggy waffle with mushy, canned strawberry puree on it. I don't even like maple syrup as I find it too sweet so the entire thing was basically ruined. The scrambled eggs were rubbery and lacked flavor and the sausage was bland with a texture I didn't like. I ate about 4 bites of my entire plate and did not ask for a container. The waitress didn't question this but was otherwise attentive and pleasant, so do with that as you will. My companion had tough chicken fried steak covered in bland flour gravy. The scrambled eggs again were rubbery and overcooked and the (rehydrated potato) hashbrowns were undercooked. They also ate about 1/3 of their plate and left the rest. Having said all of that though, it was decently crowded and they clearly had (mostly elderly) regulars. So if a bland, greasy diner is your jam then maybe this is the place for you. I had to give an extra star because people deserve their hang out. Hey, if they like it and have established relationships, I want to support that. Also, prices were on the lower end and the portions were quite large. I know that's important to a lot of people so I want to give credit where it's due. I'm honestly surprised by the high rating of this place, granted our waitress was very kind. Everything else was well below par. As I walked in I noticed a sigh as in all places mask required at all times. Its an open restaurant so seeing him constantly walk around with no mask around food was concerning and should have walked out when I noticed. Definitely was beaten to a pulp, the put in the freezer, only to be over cooked on the flat iron. The gravy lacked flavor except for the over the top pepper. I didn't even try the eggs and the hashbrowns just look unappealing. The waitress was busy, however found time to fill my ice tea. Sadly I will not be back. And $2.65 for the worst coffee - what the heck is that about? There's a new place called Tributary coffee at the Rincon Valley Tap Room making outstanding coffee for $2.50 a cup and this place makes the worst coffee and charges more - I'm a bit outraged by it. We have been here several times, but sadly it will be the last. My wife got a case of food poisoning from the Eggs Benedict and was throwing up a few hours later. She is better now, but she said never again and we all know she always wins. The food is normally very good diner-style food. I normally rate a breakfast place on their chicken fried steak, but Carlo's is just middle of the road. The problem is that the gravy is very bland. This last time I got the Denver Omelet, which was okay except I didn't like that they used sliced American cheese on top. I would have liked to see shredded cheddar that had some flavor. It was stuffed full of ham and peppers which I liked, but they need to do a lot better when competing with places like Omelete Express. Service is always good and really deserves two thumbs up. Unfortunately, we go for the food, so the service cannot carry the restaurant on its own. We probably would have come back if it wasn't for the food poisoning issue, but my wife says no. Ah, today I was able to get my burger fix. Carlos' country kitchen is located next to a gas station and a gravel plant is nearby, this place is what you would consider a dive, hole in the wall... locals place. I come here for the burgers and they never disappoint! The burger is a fresh (the owner goes to the nearby store every day to get his meat), it is juicy and so very tasty every time. The fries are ok, but seriously it is not what I go there for. Their ranch dressing is the bottled variety, so no good marks for that. It's an open kitchen with lots of activity, we've been going here for many years and Carlos is always so welcoming. One of the down sides (well maybe not for my wasteline) is they are only open for breakfast and lunch. My wife got the patty melt and said it was SO tasty!
