We've been going to Carl's for about 20 years and we keep going back because it's close, it's good, and it's predictable. Sure, I've occasionally had some items that weren't up to snuff like a salad so drenched in dressing that I could hardly eat it (once) but our server quickly fixed that with a smile. And sure it's not the best of the best that you might come across when you think "Italian food". But it's good, it's reasonably priced, and it's predictable. And all of the servers we've encountered have been friendly and engaging. Pizzas here are great and you'll see a lot of locals pop in to pick a couple up to go. If you get one to dine in, you can get it in a personal size or a larger one to share. We like to get a couple of them to split up with a little left over to take home. If you can't decide, try out the Carl's Special which gets you a plate of spaghetti that includes ravioli, meatball, and sausage. It's a treat that comes with salad and dessert. Speaking of dessert, I love the wine sundae. Wine in dessert? Oh yeah, that's my kind of dessert! Honestly Carls deserve so much more than the measly 3.5 stars it carries now. Carl's has been a north side favorite, an institution for decades and I'm happy to say the pizza hasn't changed one bit. It's a classic old school red sauce joint and they'll do anything you ask. The supreme special pizza is called a satellite. It's yum but a little bit more expensive with all the toppings. All the toppings are good but the Italian sausage really stands out. The pizza has a little bit of cornmeal on the crust keeping it crisp, each slice totally supports itself, no floppy slices here. Carl's is great for Friday nights and late nights alike. We used to stop in on the way home from the airport after late flights because the crew was always there. I'm so mad at myself for not coming here sooner! It's a comfortable Italian-American restaurant that made me feel nostalgic. I'm not Italian-American, but I grew up among a lot of Italian-Americans (yeah, I'm from NJ). This is the kind of place we'd visit back then, enjoying pasta with "red gravy," eggplant or chicken parm, and lots of garlic bread. I enjoyed my lunch of eggplant parmigiana--it wasn't too greasy and came atop a pile of comforting spaghetti. I had a simple salad with my special. My husband got the soup, which he said tasted homemade. The other booths were occupied by obvious regulars. Our waitress sat at their booth to chat, notice their new haircut, and joke around. More than at that other "Italian" chain restaurant, when you're here, you really are like family. Prices were reasonable, and we got our food quickly. We ordered for pick up. Got a large pie extra cheese and a French dip. The pizza is good, def hit the nail on the head with extra cheese and still cooked it enough but didn't burn it. Something about the dough was a bit off for my personal taste but I can't put a finger on it. The French dip was average. It came with au jus and was tasty but it was a tiny sandwich. Man I freaking love this place!! Been coming here for years but moved away. Just came for the first time in a long time today and it's still the same. Always start with the cheesy garlic bread loaf. It's amazing !! The cherry pepper are a good one too. Then you MUST get the sausage, pepper and cheese sandwich. It's not an option people. It's an absolute necessity. We ordered a small pizza with one topping, a side salad, and an appetizer of fries. The pizza was just okay. The size was plenty big for Nick and I to share (6 pieces come in the small), but the crust wasn't my style - not quite thick or thin - and the sauce was a bit too heavy for the way I like my pizza served. The fries, however, were quite delightful. They tasted like they were fresh cut and were the highlight of the meal. When we decided Italian for dinner on Sunday night, we decided to give Carl's a shot. Shady has never stopped us before! We pulled into the back lot..almost full. We order the cheese sticks that the hostess recommended, a Moretti Italian beer for my man, two waters and a small "Satellite" regular crust pizza that comes with sausage (most delicious,) pepperoni, onion, green pepper, mushrooms and black olives. They did not slack on the toppings. The cheese sticks were like any old cheese stick but the sauce to dip them in was lickworthy..and so I did! The pizza was really, really good. It was so crunchy, but not burnt or hard. My teeth sunk right in and every bite was perfect. I HATE flimsy, cheap, greasy pizza. Bill was $27.00 for everything. I could get a cheaper pizza somewhere else but I really liked it here. They had four beers on tap, red and white wine by the bottle or glass ($4.25) and lots of other Italian food choices including an eggplant parmigiana that made my mouth water just looking at it. We are biased because my in-laws had their first date at Carl's when they were in high school at Holy Family in the 1950's - been a family institution of ours ever since. Old school, probably not updated in a generation or so pizzeria - same booths for decades. The sausage on anything is great and the minestrone soup or navy bean is fabulous. Stumbled on this place walking the dog. Smelled like some of my favorite places growing up. Looked like a little hole-in-the-wall place and, from my experience, those are the best. Carl's did not disappoint. I've always gotten takeout so have zero opinions on the dine-in experience. This review is just about the food. My standard go-to on pizza is sausage and pepperoni. They do a good job on that. My personal favorite is pepperoni and bacon but Carl's doesn't offer bacon as a topping. Ordered pepperoni and ham and hit the jackpot. Don't know what it is but that is now my standard order. It's the closest to my favorite pizza of all-time - Joe Bologna's in Lexington, KY - and I don't think I will be changing the order anytime soon. It's that good. Gratified to see the pandemic didn't shut them down and I've been ordering from them to support local business...to the detriment of my waistline. I've been padding the order to help out as much as I'm able. Got the cheese sticks once and they were okay. Nothing to write home about but they weren't bad. Tried the hot wings and hit another jackpot. These are NOT buffalo wings. It's a dry rub, tastes completely different from your standard buffalo sauce, and I LOVE them! Oh, Carl's. Why. I've been a 15-year supporter of this business. Their sauces used to be amazing. Now it literally seems like it's nothing but pure tomato sauce with very little herbs and Seasonings. My pizza used to be baked with a thick layer of cornmeal across the bottom, which gave it a wonderful texture and taste. Barely even see any cornmeal anymore if it all. Last night I ordered a manicotti with salad. The salad was literally just iceberg lettuce, half of it wilted and soggy with a few slivers of carrots in it. The manicotti had a rubbery gigantic slice of cheese over the top of it. They were maybe three or four little kernels of meat in the sauce. Tasted sooooo bland. I actually went to my kitchen and got some oregano and Italian seasoning with a little more salt and Parmesan to sprinkle over the top to give it flavor. Carl's, you are a neighborhood gem.
