If I could give a negative star I would... Absolutely terrible experience. Our service van broke down in the middle of an intersection near this shop, so we had it towed there out of convenience on a Thursday afternoon. We were told it would be back on the road by Monday. By Tuesday, they hadn't even looked at it. When they finally did, they claimed it was an electrical issue and charged us over $700 for a part that turned out to be completely unnecessary. The van still didn't run. We then had to pay another $400 to tow it to our regular fleet mechanic. Our mechanic took less than five minutes to determine it was clearly the transmission -- just from the sound it made trying to go into gear. It had nothing to do with the electrical system. This was an obvious misdiagnosis that cost us time, money, and a full week of lost revenue while our service van sat unusable. Now we're fighting to get our money back for a part that was never needed in the first place. Who knows how much more they would have charged us before eventually admitting it was the transmission? I would absolutely not recommend this mechanic to anyone. Save yourself the frustration, expense, and lost time. Why is it so hard to find honest companies to take care of their customers? read more

I would not trust this shop with my car. My car was towed to their shop after it completely died at a stop light. AAA was the tow company and they recommended this place because it was close and they said it on their list of certified AAA mechanics. They charged me $150 to diagnose what was wrong with the car. They provided a long list of items wrong with the car that included many items that had nothing to do with my car not running including telling me I needed to replace the radiator, axles and struts. The total to fix all these items would have been more than my car was worth. In order to get my car running again it needed a new alternator and battery. The amount they quoted to fix the alternator was approximately $1,650 and the battery was approximately $350. A total of $2,000. I called my normal mechanic and he laughed when I told him what their estimated was. He said he would replace the alternator and the battery for a total of $700. So I decided to pay for my car to be towed to him. When I told this shop I was going to tow the car to my mechanic they said their initial quote for the alternator and battery was using premium parts. They wanted to send me a revised lower quote using non-premium parts. I said no thank you and said I just wanted to tow my car. I forwarded my mechanic the long list of items they said needed to be worked on besides the alternator and battery and he said everything else was fine with the car and nothing needed to be replaced. read more

My car went haywire driving on I5 and died on freeway. I was able to coast to the nearest exit. AAA jumped my battery which started the car at least. I Googled the closest auto repair shop and Carlsbad Auto Serive came up. I called and they said yes come on in we'll take you! It was not only a bad battery but the alternator. I came in with a coupon for an Emissions Inspection. I appreciate their efficiency and great price but am most impressed by their customer relations. Appointment: I called in the morning and was able to get an appointment for later that day. When I arrived they were actually ready to take my car at the appointment time (hooray!). Arrival: The parking lot looks something like that traffic jam game. Employees were happy to help me find a spot and quickly move cars so I could leave at the end. Wait time: estimated 35-45 minutes Actual: 5 minutes to check in and 25 minutes waiting in the lobby. The lobby is just a few chairs next to their counter. Nothing spiffy but it does the job. What I overheard while waiting in the lobby: - telling a customer they would call and update them in two hours, and then actually doing it - finishing someone's repair a day early - calling a customer by their first name (gives it a "your good ol' neighboorhood repair shop" vibe) Good people doing good work for good prices. After my recent experience with this shop i have very little trust in their communication, and trustworthiness in terms of pricing and quality. The quote they gave me was nearly $13000 in miscellaneous repairs and maintenance. $660 for BALANCING two tires. For the same price I could buy two tires with lifetime balancing at costco or discount tire. This was just one of the recommended maintenance items, out of a list of 15 line items totaling around $130000. I brought it in concerned about a ticking sound coming from under the hood. I paid a $100 diagnostic and waited a full day for them to call me and tell me that they in fact hear the tick, and it will be $1000 if I want them to actually do the labor to FIND the problem, and $6000 to fix it. Valve cover inspection -$1000 suspension control arm -$2300 sway bar links -$320 balancing TWO tires -$666 Spark Plugs. -$1000 Battery. -$430 camshaft, rocker arms and lifts -$6000 The list goes on. Might as well consider the car totaled if in needs $13000 in maintenance! Additionally, I had an 8AM appointment, and did not hear from them until I called around 4pm. I did not hear back with an update or ETA until the next morning. Better communication would have gone a long way if they planned on keeping my car overnight. read more

Carlsbad auto Service I cannot trust them for a honest evaluation of what my car really needs for repair. On Monday, 12/5/2023, I had my 2004 Ford pickup with 139,640 miles towed to Carlsbad Auto. The engine would not start. That afternoon Carlsbad Auto sent a link with the issues the truck has. I am copying the issues and subsequent texting: Primary Concern #1 Finding: There is a snake in the engine compartment (see photo) Primary Concern #2 Finding: The technician was able to confirm the customer's concern - the vehicle is not starting. The technician inspected vehicle and found no gas pressure (5 psi) - checked electrical system (fuse #18/15 amps) ok - checked inertia switch pin 3 & 1 (ok) - test for power going to fuel pump at pin 2 pink/black wire (voltage ok)- test ground wire at pin 3 (ok) Recommend removing fuel tank to inspect gas and fuel pump TEXT: ME: 1) do you know what type of snake? Maybe gopher snake. 2) do you have a way to remove snake? Water? 3) do you have to remove fuel tank to remove pump? And fuel filter? THEM: Not sure what type of snake but we will have to remove the A/C compressor to remove it and then recharge the A/C with freon, the tank has to be dropped to inspect any possible debris and to inspect the fuel pump, the fuel filter is optional but is highly recommended since the issues your having seem to be fuel related. ME: I will call Carlsbad pest control on the snake THEM: Okay no problem RESULT: I decide to drive over to talk to them about my options for removing the snake so they could work on my truck. When I got there, I did not see the truck outside and when I asked where it was, they said inside. My question then is that are not you worried about the snake getting loose in your garage. Their reply was that the snake may be dead. I had to get some papers from truck, and it also gave me the opportunity to speak with mechanic. He suggested it is probably a dead lizard. Check out the 2nd photo and easy to see it is dead as the head of the lizard is hanging down and 1/2 gone. Additionally, it was suggested I change an air cleaner that was actually at 1/2 its life span and differential fluid that had only 23,000 miles since last change. CONCLUSION: I find it hard to trust Carlsbad auto for repairs as it seems to me, I was being led to do more work than was necessary. read more

We have been loyal customers of Carlsbad Auto for around 30 years now. I always appreciate the way they are able to take my rather "girlie" explanations of my car troubles, without eye rolls or making fun, and get my vehicle back on the road. My most recent experience, I came in with my 2023 Honda Ridgeline. The fan for the a/c-heater would not blow in the front seat area at intermittent times (back seat of the cab works fine) The first thing Ralph said was, "3,400 miles! This under warranty, you should go to the dealer." Great idea but I did that and they couldn't be bothered to get to the problem. So I brought it to the place I knew would listen to my problem, find the cause, and fix it. I wish I could have had it covered at the dealer under warranty. But I am grateful that Carlsbad Auto is always available to take care of my vehicles and their maintenance and upkeep. read more

I drive a 2009 Honda Accord which I bought new and have maintained regularly (oil, tires, brakes, battery, etc.). It now has 137,000 miles and the car has performed flawlessly for 15 years. My basic maintenance schedule has been consistent but I failed to perform any major check-ups or tune-ups since my last dealer visit at 70,000 miles. Recently I was running late and ran over a concrete parking bumper at Vons, heard a loud "crunch", then noticed an oil leak on my garage floor. I took the Honda into Carlsbad Auto Service to repair what I thought was just the oil pan. Not only was the oil pan fatally cracked but my 67,000 miles of deferred check-ups produced other issues that I can summarize as worn out original factory parts. I was impressed by Carlsbad Auto Service's prompt, thorough and transparent analysis. The same morning I brought the car in, they e-mailed me a detailed document with technical descriptions of each issue they observed, backed up by clear photographs. A second attachment was a detailed estimate of the costs to repair or replace each item. The shop also prioritized the issues based on severity and the impact on driving safety (if left unaddressed). Some were serious and urgent. After a technical and patient phone review with Josh (an excellent service advisor), we agreed on a repair plan, prioritizing the most urgent issues first. The repairs were performed promptly with no surprise costs and the car has been driving flawlessly since. I am currently budgeting for the remaining less-critical but important repairs. I brought my Honda in on Thursday right before the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Because I had a lot of work done, there was no way to finish the job before the long weekend. I was impressed when Josh proactively offered to rent a car for my convenience over the holiday. The rental agency (Greenleaf, also excellent) sent a Lyft driver to my home, took me to their Carlsbad office and provided me with a relatively new Toyota Camry, all at no charge to me. When my Honda was ready and I turned in the rental, Greenleaf promptly provided me with shuttle service back to the shop, again at no charge. Car repairs are never "fun", but Carlsbad Auto Service made the entire process as smooth, transparent, trustworthy and professional as I could imagine. I drove down from Portland for a funeral and the second day down here my minivan started to rev crazy loud. It seemed to be driving fine but it was causing a lot of anxiety for me as I picked up more family at the airport. I called around to several shops and Ralph at Carlsbad Auto Service told me they were really busy but to bring it in and they'd get it in as quick as possible due to my circumstances. I dropped it off at 8:30 knowing they probably wouldn't get to it until noon at the earliest, but an hour later Ralph called me to tell me they snuck it in and found the problem was just a disconnected manifold on the exhaust. They replaced the clamp and rings and reattached it and only charged me for labor, a great resolution and it made the rest of my day so much less stressful as my family was relying on the van to run people around from out of town. My wife and I, and our extended families, have been going here for many years and we always get a smile and great service. Greg and Wayne (owner) are amazing. All the service techs there listen carefully to your concerns, offer great advice, and if you get service they will stay in touch with you all the way through it. I just had them replace my intake manifold gasket on my 2000 Lincoln Navigator and it was done to perfection, on time and at the right price for the quality work they do. :-) I remember a year ago I'd been through some very tough times, and my other Lincoln Navigator had an engine freeze up. They gave me my options and when it was evident that there was nothing to do but replace the engine, the owner was great about allowing me a few days to think about it, then assisted me in what to do next. It was great having that personal touch during a tough time. Besides this recent service, I've had our pickup trucks, our "very precious, wipe it with a diaper only" MR2 Spyder and my old 240SX convertible, all serviced perfectly there over the years at very reasonable prices. Took my Lexus CT200h for a estimate for a gasket leak issue and paid the $150 sometime price for my car to be diagnosed, only to be quoted $6k for them to fix the issue. Well, glad I didn't trust the Carlsbad Auto service shop because I shopped around and found a shop that charged 1/3 the price that Carlsbad Auto Service quoted. Now my car fixed, and back and running with the extra $4k in my pocket that I would have spent had I had Carlsbad Auto fix my car. Lesson learned, don't just trust the first price that you are quoted. It pays to get a estimate elsewhere. read more

Update: Two days later and my car won't turn on again. We took it to another shop near our house this time and they DID NOT charge us to diagnose, only to fix it. They also knew right away that it was the alternator, not the battery! When I spoke to them at Carlsbad Auto Service, they were not sure what it was and thought it was fixed based off of the car starting after they replaced the battery. Now I feel like they just wanted me to waste money, especially when this other shop knew immediately what it was, before I even told them I already got a new battery! Also, make sure if you get towed by AAA, you mention the discount you should be getting for your services. I found this out later on and Ralph agreed to refund me back 10% of it as they did not give us the discount up front. The only reason I am giving even 2 stars, is because of Ralph's quick customer service. read more

I requested a price quote to replace TPMS sensors (Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors) on my vehicle. I asked if they could determine which sensors were bad. They e-mailed me back and quoted $99.00 to diagnose which sensor(s) were bad, and $894 to replace all 5 sensors (4 wheels on car plus the spare). I went to a different shop closer to where I live. I asked the guy if he could tell me which sensors were bad. He said, "sure...let me get my scanner". He scanned ALL 4 tire valves IN LESS THAN A MINUTE, told me I had 2 sensors with dead batteries and 2 others with low batteries. Didn' t charge me a penny for the ONE MINUTE scan for ALL 4 tires. I then asked, "how much to replace all TPMS valves? He quoted me a price of $247,00 which included the valves, labor to install them, and programming. I had him do it. It took him 5 MINUTES to do the job -- 3 guys did 3 tires, 1 guy did 1 tire plus the spare. It took another MINUTE to re-program, The $99.00 quote to diagnose which valve sensors were bad (which took less than a minute), plus the $894 quote to replace all 5 sensors (which took only 5 minutes), is nothing but price GOUGING. It goes beyond greed. read more

I just needed an oil change, but I loved that I could make an appointment, drop my car off and picked it up later in the day... they even let my car sit there for awhile because I got tied up on meetings at home.
