Recently went here to get my car appraised. I was offered $2000, I did not take the offer. I sold the car next day for $2700 through Craiglist. I wanted to sell quickly, else I could have possibly got more. I would strongly advice to not sell your car here unless it has problems which cannot be fixed (or you don't want to fix them - A good think about carmax is that they will buy any car). A little investment of your time to sell the car to a private party could be quite rewarding. I used the appraisal letter I got from here in my craiglist ad - I think it added credibility to my offer. Besides this , the sales person I met was very polite and pleasant. She did not force me into buying something I did not want to. I wanted to buy a 2016 Mazda, and I think I got a better deal from the Mazda showroom nearby. In future, I will most likely have second thoughts about buying/selling at carmax. read more

Found a car online. Got to the dealership and was told that car was not available. That was after I sat waiting for about a half an hour for a car sales person. I got Pat Logan. He was chatting with another salesperson as I sat and waited, while I watched him chatting over his Starbucks coffee. Pat proceeds to tell me that not all the cars are available that show online. The car was probably "reserved" by someone on line. So I had to look at other cars available. I am thinking bait and switch from the get go. I remained calm. So we picked out two cars, a 2016 Jeep Patriot and a 2017 Jeep Compass Sport. I explain that I have to take the car to my son who is ultimately going to purchase the car. My son lives 6 miles from the dealership. I have traveled 5 hours to help my son find a new car, his broke down and was past the point of repair. Not having many days off, I drove down the evening before and researched what cars to look at the night before. Pat told me that it would be okay to go that far, but I was supposed to only get 30 minutes to test drive the car. Hmm, who does that? So I take the first Jeep out. Good to my sons house but the Jeep starts jerking and sputtering on the way back to the dealership. Well, that was a waste of my time, but it happens. So I take the 2017 out for a drive. I don't get halfway to my sons house and the car starts doing the same thing! How could this happen twice in one day, same dealership. The car was sputtering so bad I thought I might not make it back. I stop at the dealership and tell Pat, you need to drive that car, it is dangerous, and I was worried I would not make it back. what Pat did next blew my mind. He told me that if it were up to him, I would not put my son in a Jeep. Pat goes on. Those two Jeeps are not made by Chrysler and were notorious for having bad transmissions. The story gets even longer. I asked "does anyone drive these cars? How can you miss this on a test drive!" Pat tells me that the cars are not driven by the dealership, they are just dropped off at the dealership. Pat continues, I am an old Toyota man. If he was going to sell a car it was going to be a 2013 Toyota Corolla, 25k miles for $16,000. That car was probably the best value on the lot. So I am standing there thinking to myself, you let me take out two cars that you personally believe are not a good value or a good product. Now he wants to sell me a 2013 (8 year old car for 16k). I came in to look at a 2019 VW Passat for $17,998. We have gone from a midsize sedan to a compact Toyota. I have been in the dealership almost 3 hours. You really got a be shitting me. Needless to say I thanked him and told him I was going to another dealer. He asked "may I ask where?" Since Pat had my best interests at heart, I told him I was going next door, I was going anywhere else, shook his hand, told him its been real and goodbye." I would not suggest that you go to Carmax South in Austin Texas and speak to Pat. read more

After hearing all the commercials about how CarMax buys cars, I decided to give it a try and have my car appraised. I saw Identical cars on their website for 16500 with 5x the mileage of mine. I have a 2012 with 6k miles and it is absolutely perfect. I was offered 10500, Yes, 6000 BELOW what they are selling them for with their "No Haggle" pricing. I am stunned that CarMax makes $6k profit on cars; just plain dishonest. I will never buy a car from them. Plus side: it is a clean store and everyone there is friendly. read more

My partner has had a terrible experience with this CarMax facility & management. I am also a Carmax customer (Plugerville facility) where I was very pleased with service, responsiveness, management etc. and would direct your attention away from this South Austin facility if you have the option. My partner purchased a 2014 Jeep GC Overland edition from this location July 2020. He also added extended warranty for 4K. His vehicle has been sent back to Carmax 4 times for mechanical issues and 3 times for cosmetic issues since then. In every case, it takes weeks for a fix and communication throughout this time has been non-existent. Even with proactive outreach from his end to the facility and corporate - there has been little to no follow through or the customer service one would expect for vehicle-based issues (ex. both glow plugs failing, motor spewing diesel, antifreeze leak, computer reprogramming, non working windshield wipers, interior dash bubbling etc). The vehicle he purchased does not have a history of these issues from Manufacturer (Jeep). He is a longtime Jeep owner and has never experienced this breadth of issues with a Jeep vehicle. Even with an extended warranty, he has been required to pay $50 every time he brings the car into Carmax to address these issues and is put into loaner vehicles that do not have comparable capabilities for weeks on end. Most times his car must be sent to the manufacturer (Jeep dealership) for fixes - which adds days of time to his wait. It's been a nightmare and has kept him from work for days at a time, put him at risk with his employer and left him unable to enjoy a vehicle he expected he could rely on. If you have an issue with your vehicle purchased from this location, do not expect more than 1-star customer service, timeliness or responsiveness from management or the service center. read more

I worked with both Ed and Richard at Carmax South and they were extreamly professional and patient with me. Ed helped me appraise my car, which was a very fair value, and gave me 7 days to think about it. Thanks to that appraisal, I was able to sell the car for a bit more, and then used the money to put a down payment. Richard was able to help me secure financing, and they ordered a car for me to test drive, which only took a day. I ended up not wanting it and purchased a Hyundai Sonata instead. Richard went out of his way to help me, including giving me a ride home when I embarrassingly managed to lose my ID after taking the bus and a taxi to Carmax. I chose Carmax mainly because I dont mind spending a bit more (There's no Haggling) for the service provided. They are extremely clear about their warranties, and they will push extra services without being too pushy about it. I love my new car, I feel like I got a fair price for it, and the service is exactly what I needed. read more

Ask them how many times each tire has been poorly patched prior to purchasing a car from them. Two months after buying my car from them. I had two flats, two weeks apart on the same side of the vehicle. Each tire had multiple patches that were poorly done leaving the tires to slowly leak air still since they had no plug to fill the tear/hole, or a plug that was to small and don't fit the hole it was supposedly filling. Super frustrating... Two new tires in two months of ownership, but hey "the tire tread was still good the day the vehicle was inspected" so says the service manager. Fingers crossed that this is the only issue I have with this car. read more

When My wife and I wanted to get a minivan again, all my research pointed me to a certain brand/yearmodel. When I read about CarMax, I was impressed with all the reviews on the process of buying a used vehicle. When I went online to try to find my selected brand/yearmodel, I found out the nearest one(s) were in Houston area (...we live rurally 30+ miles east out of Austin). Carmax had the car delivered all the way from the Houston area to our closest store in Austin (....all without any obligation on our part to purchase that particular vehicle!) to allow us to test-drive and go over the vehicle with our mechanic. This is a normal thing with Carmax from all I have read/heard. Talk about "above and beyond" for a used car dealership!!! We were impressed (...and bought from CarMax!)!!! read more

Heres the thing: Carmax came through when I royally effed up. Never expected that to happen. I brought in my beloved Volkswagen GTI, which needed too many repairs for me to continue owning. I came into CarMax on a WEEKDAY, so they made me an above-good-condition-Bluebook offer within 30 minutes. The entire sale took less than an hour and a half. The next day, I put my things in storage and left Austin for the summer. Somehow, "my things" also included my WT^&@%ing Carmax bank note. I had a terrible experience here. I was approved through the loan process, then came in with my trade in car and everything. I put down my boss numbers direct number (mind you this is a Friday). Since it is after 5p my boss is not in the office. Her voicemail says her name. They somehow think it is just some random person because it doesn't say the company name that I work for. But, this is a direct line in her office, not the main number. They say CarMax financing did not approve me, yet I seen the approval, and I called them directly and they say they did approve me, but, it was the local CarMax who said they did not want to do the deal... Behold, the next day my car that I paid to ship to get here was sold over that weekend. I can see now what was going on. I ended up getting the brand new version at a local dealership. I wouldn't recommend going to them. I have seen a lot of reviews of cars being sold when you have your mind set on that particular one and you are holding it. read more

In contrast, the south Austin CarMax was phenomenal. Our sales person (a woman named Inez) was super helpful and patient and transparent, not pushy and shifty-eyed. The Car Max concept was something that was pretty new to me, having sold former cars privately after keeping them until they could no longer run. I wanted to create a comparative analysis of how much Kelly Blue Book would recommend I sell my SUV for, what they were going for privately, and how much the dealership would give me. Based on the Blue Book value: Private sale came in first, with a 10% differential from the car's value. Dealership came in second, with a 15% differential. Car Max came in last, with 20% (about $4,000) differential. The young lady who scheduled my appointment, met me on time, provided information while my car was valued, and generally gave me the options that existed . She was VERY nice, and I chatter her up around the common ground we had. While impressed with her natural, conversational attitude, she dressed "down" and had too-casual body language (sitting on her foot, carrying herself more as if at a picnic than during a business transaction). Some people would not mind this demeanor, and I did not either, so I am just extrapolating the facts. We must keep #1 point in mind: This is business, and it comes down to money. Their offer for my car was just too low. I think that if I wanted a no-fuss, no bother trade in for a used car, this relationship could have fared better for Car Max. However, I wanted a new car, so the deal could not work out. read more

My husband and I had been debating on what type of SUV to purchase for the past 3 months and made several trips to CarMax to check some out. Finally, we found what we were looking for - a 2011 Cadillac SRX Premium (insert drool here). We test drove the model that they had on the lot. Patrick was our consultant. Let me just tell you right now, if you're skeptical about CarMax's way of doing business with their "no haggle" pricing policy then you really need to take into consideration the attitude the salesman will have when it comes to your best interest (please see my review from Roger Beasley Audi from last year). Someone that works on commission is not necessarily going to tell you everything that you need to know about a vehicle. Someone that works on salary (like a CarMax employee) will. Anyway, so we find the vehicle that we want. Only problem is, the model they had on the lot did not come with air conditioned seats although it had the slot for it. So we went into the database and found the exact same vehicle, same mileage, color, interior, EVERYTHING that we wanted but was located at CarMax in Tennessee. No problem. We ordered it, paid the flat bed fee to have it shipped to us, and we had ourselves a car within 6 days. All of that being said, we love the SUV. And I think we love it even more knowing that the way we bought it was how car buying should be (you see what I did there). It really was though. We purchased the extended warranty, which I recommend to anyone buying a car, and was only a few extra $k for piece of mind. It will last for the next 6 years, you can't beat that! P.S. I forgot to mention that they priced my car - a 2009 BMW 328i sport - for a trade-in (even though I didn't trade in) and were going to give me $3k MORE than what BMW and the value on KBB was going to give me! You're still able to sell your car to CarMax even if you don't purchase a vehicle from them... something to think about. read more

I bought from Carmax because they had the truck I wanted, not because I wanted to buy something specifically from them. This was the first time I bought a car from a dealership. The truck was in San Antonio and getting it transfer to Austin was very easy. The test drive went great. The buying process was pretty painless and quick. My one and only complaint was about the cleanliness of the truck. The outside was pretty clean and under the hood. The interior was fairly clean. But the leather on the steering wheel looked and felt very worn out. The shifter also seemed worn. It was like that on the test drive and when I picked it up. Come to find out it was just caked with dirt and grime, disgustingly so. I assumed they would have already cleaned it and that was the best it would get but after I spent about an hour cleaning it myself it was good as new. Kinda odd. read more

Everything was going as planed.... I had picked out a 2015 Chevy Texas edition sliverado on Friday. I was planning on getting my finances together and come the next day to purchase the truck. Theo my sales man told me that he was going to put the truck on hold for one day and I was going to come back the next day with the truck on HOLD and buy it. Theo said he would be there at nine so we could meet up and take care of the paper work. I called Carmax at nine and he did not show up until ten... During that time I realized that Theo put the wrong truck on hold and had been sold before he even showed up, after he told me that he would be there at nine am. So my advise is if you are lucky enough for someone to put a car or truck on hold be sure and double check everything. Most of all don't work with Theo, he is incompetent. read more

My Daughter purchased a car from Carmax over a year ago in 2016 in Austin Texas. It was her first car and a very exciting achievement in her life. Then Carmax refused to help her register it after trying multiple times. We advised her not to drive it and not to make any more payments on it. When she attempted to contact Carmax to remedy this problem each time the person she spoke with was let go and she would be referred to someone else. She has had to find other means of transportation for over a year. Her credit Is now ruined and cannot purchase another car. We are having to pay storage and insurance on a car that does not belong to us. We just want this matter resolved so she can purchase a car. We have bought multiple cars from Carmax over the years but now will not return due to the way this situation has been handled. After speaking to other employees this happens often and the customer is screwed every time due to Carmax laziness. When we spoke to county offices they said we needed to report them to the state of Texas. And hire a lawyer. We aren't a wealthy family and cannot afford this. We just want Carmax to do the right thing. read more

This was my first car buying experience, so I was naive to a lot of things. TLDR; I felt the Carmax employee took advantage of my naivety, and if it wasn't for my own research, I would have been screwed over on a 6 year loan. I found the car I wanted (a 2014 Jeep), but it had to be transferred from Dallas, and it cost $149. I arrive for the Drive-time, and I meet the employee A. H.. As we are walking to the car, he informs me that the previous owner was a smoker and that they "bombed" the car overnight to try to cover up the smell. The car smelled so bad it stuck to you -- not the smoke, but the weird smell of whatever they used to try to cover it up. Issue #1: They did not tell me before I paid to transfer the car that the previous owner was a smoker. Drive was fine - I was in a desperate situation to get a car, and I still really liked the car's exterior. The salesman kept saying that the smell would go away, so I believed him (I'm too kind). We get to the point where we're discussing the loan - he already knows this is my first time buying a car - he knows that I'm wanting to get a car immediately - he offers me a CarMax loan for 10.9% APR. I called my parents - they have bad credit - they thought 10.9% was fair for someone buying a car for the first time. We'll return to this point. I walked away with a car, but I had a pit feeling in my stomach - I didn't celebrate with the obnoxious bow they placed on the car. I felt better knowing that I had 5 days or so to return the car. I took the car in for detailing - cleaned - trying to get rid of the smell - it was still bad. The next morning was cold, and I learned the heater wasn't working. Issue #2: The heater in the car that I paid to get transferred was not working. I was so pissed that a part of the car already wasn't working after 1 day that I started looking into returning the car because of the two issues I've highlighted. A friend tipped me that they financed their car through a credit union and got a good deal. I happened to live next to a federal credit union, so I walked in.. and had them explain to me what APR was... and to check my credit and see what they'd offer me. They offered me 2.85% APR. Issue #3: The salesman clearly offered me the CarMax 10.9% APR knowing I qualified for better financing - he offered zero alternatives. After doing my research and educating myself on car-buying further, I found out I could buy a brand new Jeep for the same price and on a 5-year loan. Needless to say - I returned that car as soon as possible. When I was returning the car, I asked for money back for getting the car detailed, for the transfer fee from Dallas, and a ride to the Jeep Dealership a few blocks down. I asked the manager why they didn't tell me the previous owner was a smoker... their response? Issue #4: "You didn't Ask" This place - this salesman - preys on naivety; Snakes; Do you research... this can literally happen to anyone - looking back - I was a total idiot... But for my credibility - I'm actually in Medical School. I would never recommend buying anything from this CarMax specifically... or CarMax in general. I'd sell to them - they'll buy just about anything. read more

My experience with CarMax South Austin was like that of a satirical South Park episode- portraying all the terrible and bad stereotypes associated with selling/buying a vehicle. They not only treated both myself and my family abrasively, there was also so little cohesion amongst the sales/business departments that it was difficult for any parties to understand what was even going on. Definitely do not sell your car here, and if the buying experience follows suit, you probably shouldn't buy here either. read more

I have bought two cars from CarMax but had not used their service department until last week. I purchased a car last summer with them and chose an extended service plan. SOO glad I did this. I had a check engine light come on on my way back from visiting my daughter in Oklahoma, and I made an appointment with them as soon as I got home. Unfortunately it did take about a week to get in with them, but I had the best service experience I've ever had anywhere. The service representative kept me up to date EVERY DAY, and because my repair was covered under my extended service plan, my rent car fee was covered as well. They even ran it through the car wash before I picked it up. Very happy customer. Thank you! read more

I am not someone who enjoys the car buying experience. Most places make it way to inconvenient to the buyer and way to time consuming. I have had my share of bad experiences at dealerships however, CarMax Austin, TX South took it to a whole new level. I was shopping foe a stylish but economic vehicle to replace my aging Range Rover that consumed too much of my income filling it with gas. I decided I would buy a Lexus CT200h. I found one at CarMax South Austin and called to get pre-approved for the purchase so I could shorten the time stuck at the dealership. I was approved but soon after the salesman calls me back to tell me he can get me an even better deal. I listened to what he had to say and knew he was doing a simple up-sale on me but I was actually going to be better off the the newer car for a few thousand more. One catch was the car was not local so I had to pay to have it delivered. I paid $100.00 for the transfer of the car having already been assured everything was ready to go. All I had to do was show up, test drive and pay the down payment and provide proof of income. A week later I called the salesman to check on the car and he made an appointment with me to come in the next afternoon to test drive the car and most likely purchase it. I just happened to call in I was never informed the car I had paid to be transported there had been delivered. After the test drive I decided to move forward with the car purchase. My wife was with me but since I was going to be doing the very boring process of getting the car she left to go do other things. The salesman then hit me with a document outlining everything I needed to have for the company covering the loan. This stupid guy has had a week to give me specific details on what was required and I asked hime on several phone calls and was assured I had gathered everything they would need. Part of my income is from seasonal photography work where I average $20,000 a year. That day at the CarMax dealership I was told the bank statements had to be from the last 3 months only. So now very pissed I walked outside to call my wife to come back to pick me up from CarMax when the salesman came out and said he was just able to get me approved without the additional income. I asked for the details and he said the interest rate would be 5% higher, I was even more pissed. Then he told me that I would also be required to have insurance for that specific car before I could take it even though I had proof of full coverage insurance and you have 72-hours to get coverage on a new car purchase. I told the sales person and his manager I was done with them and wanted my money for the car transfer back. I will have to Waite uptown 72-hours to see if the money was refunded to my debit card. These guys are unprofessional at best and have no problem waisting peoples time or money. I strongly advise to do your car buying business elsewhere. read more

TOTAL SCAM AND RIPOFF!!! Stay away. I went in for an appraisal on my car, aware that after 135k miles it needed a new paint job and a new circuit board. I was honest and upfront about the car's history. What I got in return was a hatchet job. All the seats have stains, apparently although you can't see any, the dash needs to be replaced (no, in fact it's fine), and the engine doesn't work right (it's a Prius, it runs fine it just alternates between the gas and hybrid engines). But the reason I know this is a scam is that they reported structural damage to the frame of the car from before I purchased it. I have a hard copy of the original CarFax when I bought it as well as every maintenance inspection in the past 8 years. I've had to take it to several service areas (mostly dealerships) over the years and not once has there been a report of structural issues. There are none. This was fabricated. Do not trust this staff and avoid dealing with this office. I don't know if this is common at CarMax in general, but this operation seems very shady. Reading some other reviews, it seems common that they try to take advantage of their customers. read more

I bought my 2008 Hyundai Elantra from Car Max South in 2009. I have the extended warranty so I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but whenever I take it to them for an oil change which is all its ever needed besides tires and belts, they are reliable and quick and don't try to make to get extra unnecessary stuff like drive in lube places do. My Carmax experience this time around as well as the other 2 times was superb. My expectations were met or exceeded on all levels. The staff was friendly​ and knowledgeable. The entire process didn't take too long, and I was looped in during each step so that I knew what to expect. The best part was that it was easy! I knew exactly what I wanted going into the process. I was able to trade in my vehicle (also purchased at Carmax in Charlotte, NC) and my new car came out washed up with a bow on it! Great job Lora and the rest of the staff. I left with tears today. First off, the new sales guy that helped me was very kind. I got a vehicle transferred to South Austin located from Fort Worth TX. Paid $199 and uploaded the requested documents to a link that was personally sent to me. I got approved for the vehicle but just had to wait for the vehicle to arrive. Mind you my proof of income got verified and I have the text messages to prove it. Car arrived to south Austin, got the call and went in with my 10 month old. They then asked for the documents I had already provided but they said no, I had to log into my personal account like city of Austin utilities and a work portal for my stubs. I thought it was weird considering I'd been approved and provided the documents which already had gotten reviewed. I had a hard time getting into my work portal ADP to be exact because their computer was not on my job server. I have the app on my phone which I have limited access and offered to pull it up on my phone then email to them. The rude manager Armando did not approve of it. Although they had the documents in their system already he still was set on me logging in on their computers and pulling my personal stuff up. I explained I couldn't access my job stuff but had what they needed in my phone. He denied. Just because of that he refused business. Mind you I have 3 friends who got a vehicle from them just this year literally a few months ago and we're able to email their documents. Why not me?! I told him that carmax call center never told me about this "policy". It's not a policy it's his personal preference. Do they pick and choose who can email their stubs and who can't?! I left crying because I thought this car would be my blessing for my son and I. They led me the wrong way and forced me to put a lot of hope and excitement into this process. Nope, still nope. Even after paying off our car in full we're still unfortunately dealing with CarMax trying to get them to accept our payment. Called corporate and the finance department and each time we call the notes are completely inaccurate. They still give us the run around each time we call and blame the notes on the last person we talked to. We bought a 2013 Highlander in May. The car had 16,900 miles on it. We were told the car passed their three star inspection. Guess what? Less than 4,000 miles later we were told by two companies we needed new tires. Do you think our car that we purchased really had the original tires on it? The best car buying experience I've had! I have been a loyal customer of a different dealership, other than Carmax, for over two decades. I live an hour away from them, so I usually start my car dealer looking for what I want and they email some options to me before I go out there. This time they did not seem to know or have exactly what I wanted. In an effort to show them what I was looking for, I did a web search for the make and model of the truck I wanted (Toyota Tundra). Well... up pops this beautiful truck on the Carmax website. I sent the ad to my salesperson as an example. Silence... I emailed an inquiry to Carmax and got a call back in minutes. It was my first ever contact with Carmax and the rep did a good job answering my questions. I liked the truck enough to call the South Austin location about it. Eric Hernandez took my call and stepped up big time! The truck was in Garland, Tx. Eric had them do a thorough walk-around on the truck. He called me that night and gave me a very detailed rundown on the truck's condition. I asked him to ship it and I paid what I thought was a reasonable fee. The transfer took a week. That kind of bummed me out at first but, Eric had already explained that it might take a while and he kept me updated (even on his day off!). Once it was on location, I was eager to go check it out. Eric asked me to hold off a little while longer so they could do a thorough check and detail it after shipping. I went out the next night and Eric was on the job! He blew through the process like nothing. The appraisal was better than I expected and the turnaround on the whole process, including the test drive and paperwork, was effortless. They exceeded my expectations in more ways than I could ever say here. Now I have to break up with my old dealership... Great job Carmax! Thanks Eric! read more

Car Max didn't have the car I wanted in their showroom, but I found one in Dallas. It took 4 days to transfer. I heard "they do a 120 point inspection" from enough of their staff, I was confident the car would be in great shape. After it arrived, they were unable to sell it because of a mileage discrepancy. They said they were trying to contact the previous owner to get him to correct the paperwork. Their next option was to drive the car another couple hundred miles until they matched. I said I would prefer to be the person driving the car if they were to resort to that option. Late Saturday I got the call it was ready. Unable to contact the owner, they had been driving the car all day... I drove to Austin. The car was GORGEOUS. A 2009 BMW 328i red convertible with 27,000 miles. It had the sport package & xtras I wanted. It was $32,000. I sold them 2 cars, a Maxda MX5 and a Land Rover LR3 HSE and gave them $10,000.00. I purchased the warranty. Once on the road, I noticed a vibration that indicated alignment, wheel balance, or tire damage. Since the BMW run flats can cost $750 a wheel & are generally not covered by warranty, I really didn't want to have to pay for any big ticket repairs. When braking, the car dipped significantly to the left. I knew I had 5 days to return the vehicle, but I wanted to make sure it was documented that this was not a problem that occurred after I left their showroom. I sent a text to the salesperson and told her that I might be returning the car. She responded, " A lot of people went to a lot of trouble to get that car ready for you. See if you can't work it out with the service manager." Sunday, I discovered that the mechanism to raise and lower the top did not function as it should. Their was also no wiper fluid. I started to wonder which functions they check in their 120 points. Monday I decided to return to the dealer. The right front tire was flat. I took a picture of the warning on my dashboard & added air so I could make trip. When I discussed the issues I had including the flat, the manager told me it was cold. I told her it was just as cold for the other 3 tires. I told her I felt better off purchasing a high end vehicle from a dealer who knows what the drive should feel like and wouldn't have released the 328i in that condition. She told me purchasing a used BMW from the dealer didn't guarantee the car was free of body damage. Their inspections do. I didn't want to get into what their inspections check, because they missed such biggies as wiper fluid, brake pads, & a damaged wheel... The service manager said the car needed an alignment. They could take care of it if I wait another couple hours. I remembered the salesperson explaining if I purchased the warranty through CM, it would still be serviced by BMW because their mechanics didn't work on BMWs. I decided to return it. The manager doesn't make it easy to follow through with the return policy, but once you're clear that's your intent, they do it. It took about 2 hours for the paperwork. I got checks for my trade ins, but was told they would have to mail the $10,000 from corporate headquarters. I took a cab to BMW & purchased a pre-owned convertible BMW 335i M SPORT w/ 28,000 miles & all the bells & whistles I need to satisfy my inner Andretti. Bumper to bumper warranty to 50,000 miles including routine maintenance, brake pads, oil changes. EVERYTHING is taken care of without paying for an extended warranty. I got a more powerful car for only 3K more than the 328i at CarMax. Not only did they come off the sticker, but they deducted the fare for my cab. But I'm not done with my disappointment in CarMax. THEY HAVE NOT RETURNED MY $10,000. I was told they have to verify the check cleared, then mail a check. On 12/12, my bank faxed verification that the check funded 12/10. The manager told me she emailed verification to corporate. I was told they were mailing a check & I'd have it in 5 days. On 12/17 I called CarMax and was told they were tracking it down. On 12/19, the manager told me "they've verifed receipt of funds and are cutting a check." They can mail it to me or FED EX to the dealer. It would be there12/21. 12/21 I drove to CarMax. The manager told me they were cutting a check Friday and overnighting it for Saturday delivery. 12/22 I am told they didn't receive it, but their corporate office is closed over the week end. I told them to figure out how to get me my money now. The manager claims" their hands are tied". I've told them to cut me a personal check and get repaid by CarMax. If the thought of being able to return a used car offers the assurance you need to trust CarMax, BE WARNED. their 120 point inspection is performed by INCOMPETENT MECHANICS and while you CAN return the car, RETURNING YOUR MONEY requires heroic efforts on your part. read more

***UPDATE: After much hassle, CarMax did eventually come to understand our situation and help us. We were referred to Tyler at CarMax Austin South, who was wonderful to work as well as the CarMax in Connecticut that we eventually went through for our replacement car*** We were having "great experiences" with CarMax too, just like the rest of you reporting great experiences, until we had an "unfixable" problem. My husband and I purchased a vehicle from CarMax in Austin, TX just over a year ago in good faith that the car would be safe and operable, as CarMax guarantees. We purchased the most expensive warranty and thankfully so, because our car was in the shop just weeks after we purchased it. We have had a computer/electrical issue with the car since we bought it. At first, Honda/CarMax told us that it was a computer problem and they claimed to have fixed the problem. Unfortunately, all the "fix" seemed to do was ensure that our still-broken computer does not log incidents that need to be logged. Since getting the car "fixed" the first time, we have had several, life-threatening incidents with the car. When we are driving, accelerating on the highway most often, all of the electronics will turn off, as if we turned off the car's ignition at 70+ mph. The car will appear to stall and we have to simply hope that any high-speed cars behind us do not hit us. After 30 seconds or so of this, the car will suddenly accelerate back up to the original speed, which is also putting us in danger. Often, it will stall out several times in a row, accelerating and decelerating rapidly--which is insanely dangerous, particularly if the roads are wet or icy. Luckily, this problem has not yet put us in an accident, but as anyone can see, this problem could kill us. We have taken the car into CarMax several times for this problem. Every time we have taken it in, they have sent the car off to Honda and they have reported that they cannot find the problem. They cannot find the problem because 1.) the problem only happens every few months and 2.) part of the problem is based in the computer/electrical system and since that's what's broken, we're not surprised the problem isn't being logged. Ultimately, Honda's diagnostic computers aren't finding the problem, and so CarMax's position is that there isn't a problem. CarMax's Operations Manager in Austin, Neil, recently offered us a "solution". The "solution" is that we sell back the defective car for much less money than we paid, allow CarMax to wholesale it (gravely unethical if they don't yet know which part of the car is causing this problem), and cough up the extra money for a different car, warranty, and taxes ourselves. This is absurd. We paid money in good faith not only for our car to CarMax but also for the extended stability of the most expensive warranty and this is the best CarMax can do? Put us in a situation wherein we have to actually pay more to get out of our highly dangerous car? Sell our highly dangerous car to another innocent buyer? The last alternative is that we keep the car and we wait for the inevitable accident to come. Whether we are killed in it or we survive it, the blood and the ensuing terrible publicity from a lawsuit like this will be on CarMax's hands. read more

John Parton will rob you. This man screwed me on a transfer of a vehicle, sent me numerous emails stating the car was in transit. It was not. He cost me a rental, time, and the loss of a day of work for me to go get the car out of town. No remorse. No apology. And he apparently got a split(cut$) on the sale. He did nothing but make me lose money. I would NEVER go to carmax again. I really wanted a specific year vehicle , with little time to acquire it, and carmax had it. I heard good things. Nothing better than anyone else I have ever been to, and this is my 6th vehicle purchase. John Parton is bullshit. He has worked there forever, so his supervisor Blaire, had no power over making my poor situation with John any better. It pisses me off knowing that this man walks around the showroom floor, lying and ripping off women, and gets paid for it. Horrible place. I read everyone elses review, and I am sorry, but I just did not have a good experience with Carmax. My daughter was in the market for a car, and I am not talking looking, BUT ready to buy. Someone suggested Carmax, so we gave it a shot. When we walked in the front door, there were many many people working inside, and it being our first time there, we did not know their procedures, so we just stood there, waiting for someone to greet us or come over and ask if we needed help. Nothing....we went outside and looked around....and still not a single employee came to offer any help. And, too, their inventory was way TOO HIGH. So, we went to another dealership and bought a car on the spot. I will never recommend Carmax to anyone. read more
