Do yourself a favor and avoid CarMax at all cost. They are extremely unprofessional, rude, and no one within their office communicate with one another. They had told me that I could have license plates sent to Carmax and they would call me when they were ready for pick up. I called for several weeks because no one ever contacted me. It got to the point where the temporary plates were going to expire and the employee told me just to come in and get another set of temporary plates. The next day I get a voicemail saying that they tried contacting me multiple times and since they could not contact me, they were mailing out my plates. Well guess what? No one ever contacted me or left me a voicemail and I never received the plates in the mail. I called to speak to them, and the girl on the phone was very unprofessional and rude. I asked to speak with the manager, and he was even worse, and started yelling at me on the phone and telling me the notes on the account said the plates were mailed. Now I have to go to the county, tax office and file/ pay for missing plates due to the scattered business practice and incompetence at Carmax. there are lots of cars out there. First: the good. I do believe they take COVID seriously. They had chairs spaced out with 6 feet of space within the waiting area. You are encouraged to make an appointment with a salesperson. You test drive solo (after showing insurance). Now, why the 2 star review? Salespeople do not respect customers' time. I had to wait excessively at 2 separate appointments (more than 20 minutes). I saw salespeople chatting in the "catching" area while I was waiting (4 salespeople!!!) . The salesperson I talked to had all my finance information, but he did not pass it on to the finance department. If I hadn't had my finance information myself, it would have taken MUCH longer. So just a heads up-you will spend quite a lot of time waiting, even if you have an appointment. I did, twice. And I was only test driving ONE specific car, which I paid to have shipped to this store from out of state-and one salesperson said he "couldn't find it". So I waved him over to the car and pointed it out. Like, gah. The only reason I stuck with it is because I loved that specific car and it's been hard to find. A very negligent car dealer. When I checked the car before buying it I realized one of the rear tires had a missing part. The manager guaranteed that wasn't an issue, she promised they wouldn't sell a car with a tire that could be a hazard. I trusted her word and bought the car, a 2016 Scion tC with less than 30k miles. Less than two months after buying my car, and less than 1500 miles after, the tire blew out. When I went to the Carmax to make the claim, I had to argue with a manager in order to get my refund because I had to buy two new tires. Many years back I bought my sweetie a 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo Jeep in Taylor. Yes, I used to live in suburbamania, Pville, can't believe it to this day. In fact, thanks to Susie we now live in the 49.. anyhow.. Susie loved her "Old Girl", but she was getting long in the teeth.. (Old Girl not Susie) 147K miles later, she is still running but needs to be put out to pasture. Her moon roof no longer mooned anyone, her left eye was still faded from an unfortunate run in with a deer on 360 one evening. You see, she was a great SUV and she was a stout gal. In her long life with us she managed to eliminate one stop sign, backed into a Lexus on Christmas Eve and suffered the indignity of a hit and run driver who painfully removed her left side mirror.. But we always fixed her back up and kept her running. And Susie gave her a frequent bath.. I knew "Old Girl" was asking to be put into retirement, so I started to look around. CarMax's website just rocked. I looked elsewhere, but kept on coming back to CarMax. After doing a big search, I narrowed it down to another Grand Cherokee Laredo an 08, "Old Girl's" younger sister if you will. She seemed like she was fairly virginal, only 21K miles on it.. but she lived in Garland. That is when I noticed CarMax would ship her to Austin for FREE. I called and talked with a salesman, Matt Myres, and he told me he would make sure the transfer would take place and would have an associate check it out before she would leave Garland. I got a call back a little later and he told me, she looked really nice and they would ship her that day. And no obligation to buy. So on monday the new whip arrived. I had to work and I asked Susie to go check her out and to give me a call if she liked it... around lunch my phone rang, I picked it up to hear Susie screaming HELL YES, IT'S PRECIOUS.. I took care of a few items and headed down to fill out the paperwork and pick it up. We still didn't know what to do with "Old Girl"... Matt mentioned they would certainly give an appraisal for us if we wanted to trade it in. She had been part of the family for so long we didn't want to lose her... but, then then appraisal popped up on the computer.. and they liked her as much as we did... So we let them have her, said our goodbyes and headed over to our new ride... or should I say to Precious. Took my car in yesterday to get a quote on selling it. They quoted me way low, about 50% of bluebook value; I almost laughed. I ended up taking it to another used car dealer and selling it for almost double what CarMax offered me. I only give them 2 stars instead of one because the customer service at CarMax was quick and friendly and the experience was smooth. They have a waiting room with tv, coffee, and water, and a separate kids area with toys. Everything was neat and tidy there. Granted, I chose to car shop on a bad weather day but the salesmen (I went to both Austin locations) asked little to no questions about my wants or needs. It felt like I was doing the entire talking. I had a terrible experience at this South Austin Carmax. I found that I couldn't trust a word they said to me. Based on my experience, I'd never trust them to sell me a car that would be safe to drive. If you work with them, assume they are giving you false information and grossly hyped estimates. Make sure you have the car checked for safety by somebody else before you sign a contract. They gave me grossly inaccurate initial estimate of trade-in value and purchase costs to get me in the door. Their in-person estimate was 40-percent lower than online estimate. I was assured over and over by their young salesman that their estimates "almost always" match up with original estimates. Their salesman outright lied multiple times. They try to present as if they aren't another unscrupulous "used-car" dealer, but it's the same story. Slick, dishonest salespeople; greasy finance guys. I don't even know where to start. I began the process online and received a text saying I was approved, and an associate would reach out soon with a phone call. No one called. So 2 days later I called the store three times, and each time I never even made it past the automated system- which left me on hold for more than 15 mins each time. I decided to try again a few weeks later. This time I got in touch with someone from corporate office who helped me select a car- then I asked about home delivery, which was definitely not as quick and efficient of a process as I hoped. A lot of back and forth texts, miscommunication, etc. She also forgot to add my middle initial, and had to rerun the credit application- and somehow this caused my APR to jump 1.4%! Not happy. Finally got my home delivery set up, rearranged my schedule to be home, and then 15 minutes before my delivery appointment, I got a phone call apologizing because they computer system in the mobile van was down. They offered to send me a Lyft ride to the dealership. Just a huge inconvenience, as I live 45 mins from the dealership, and I would now have to wait until after work to handle this. Lyft wasn't able to find a driver for me, so I had to find a friend to give me a ride. I arrived, and waited a few minutes before being taken into the signing room. The only positive experience about this entire thing was the woman who did the documents. She was super friendly, and I wish I remembered her name. After the documents- I got into my new car to head home finally. Within 10 minutes, the "tire pressure sensor" warning light came on. I also noticed there was oxidation on the windshield, the passenger side doors, and there were numerous places on the trim where they had "melted" it back...it was SO cheap looking! Within the next 2 days, the check engine light came on, and the warning alarm saying "door ajar" would not stop beeping- even though no doors were open. Needless to say, I called them to let them know I would be bringing the car back. I once again had to drive 45 minutes, take time out of my workday to go down there and handle this. Now, I have to go back to square one to find a car for myself and my family, and have my credit ran for the 3rd time in a week. Thanks again CarMax! read more

After deciding that it was time to take the car away from my father in law we knew we had to sell the car and our past experience with CarMax was amazing. We were greeted quickly and courteously by a very helpful young man and he immediately took the vehicle for an appraisal. While we waited in the lobby area we were offered water and coffee. When they were finished with the offer (a very, very generous offer) the paperwork was a breeze. All said and done we were in and out in about an hour and a half. I think the key is to be there when they open. It was a great experience and we would highly recommend using them when trading in a vehicle. read more

My experience this time with Carmax was not what I expected or could believe that took place. I have purchased and sold vehicles with Carmax in the past. This time it was to purchase an auto. It started with a Text regarding an inquiry I made online regarding a vehicle at the North Austin location. I received a text from one person and by the next day I was receiving a text from another person but from the same phone number. By the time everything was all said and done I had 10 different salespeople on this text from the same phone number which was I found out the new customer service line. I found two vehicles one was at the north location & the second was at the south location. I had the vehicle located south sent to the north location as it was only a few miles from my home. i set an appointment to test drive both vehicles for a Friday. (Back story is i lost my car in the hailstorm end of September. i had to wait on my total loss payment from the adjuster.) when i went to test drive both autos they had so many cars everything was pulled in tight, BUT the cars i looked at and test drove had no damage to the autos. I chose the new auto a 2023 Nissan Kicks SV with 8700 miles on it. It looked brand new and drove amazing. NO DAMGE was on the car. I had to wait to purchase the auto as I didn't have the down payment as of yet so they told me they could hold it only for 3 days and then release it back to public for others to test drive etc. Even after I signed all the application and had a pre-approval from Captial One. The salesperson I worked with that day was nice, but when I called back on that Monday to let her know that I didn't have the down payment still as that day was a bank holiday, she stated well we can't hold it and she didn't check her text messages to me because of the rudeness of the texts. I called her out on it for not making sure that she was checking the messages and how rude they were coming across and all that was said was she couldn't hold the car. I said ok. A few days later when I had the DP in hand, I called to see if the car was still available and they told me YES, WE ARE HOLDING IT FOR YOU! I explained that was not what was said to me but ok, I will be in the next day to pick up the car and we processed all the paperwork online via DocuSign. When I got to the dealership the next day I signed the remaining paperwork and went outside with the customer service rep that I signed paperwork with. The key fob to the car was not working . The manager and the rep were still trying to figure out the key fob when i walked around the car and saw Damage to the car that I had not made on my test drive the past Friday and NOR did I test drive it when I came back to purchase it. I called it out to the manager as it was significant, and I would not have purchased the car if it was like that. The manager advised that it was not me that I did not do the damage and so he advised that he would not have allowed it on his sales floor with that damage. I was told that they would fix the damage to the car, and he would put in a ticket right away and they would call me to come back in to fix it. I waited Thursday no calls from anyone, no calls Wednesday night and no calls Friday until I called that afternoon and left a voicemail for the manager, and I spoke to the service team manager. He advised that he didn't have any notes or any tickets for my vehicle. he stated that he would go talk to John the Manager. The SM called back Saturday to set up an appointment, but I was out of pocket and could not respond. I called the dealership Monday and again left a message for John the manager and then also called the service department. SM stated that no John had not called to set up the appointment and I advised why again, i was not happy and wanted the manager to call me. He went ahead and set an apt for me to come in to look at the damage and then also let me know how long and the extent of everything. Tuesday i still never heard back from the manager and when i talked to the SM he stated that the manager never returned his calls either. I asked the SM if this damage while not my fault would go on the car fax report (mind you no current marks on the report existed) He stated that the damage was extensive enough that yes it would now go on the car fax report and therefore I now had a depreciation value against my car. I asked for John the manager or the other manager on duty and John happened to walk out, I asked him if he remembered me, and he said no. I advised that I had called multiple times, with no answers from him I asked him if he was going to now reimburse me for the depreciated value of the car i just purchased and he said no they dont do that i would just have to return the car. I said ok then lets cancel the contract. They then drug their feet getting things processed so i had to contact Carmax Corporate. Be cautious, I lost trust in this company. read more

I have purchased my last three cars at Carmax (2 north location, most recent, south location). I love the fact that I can go online and search for exactly what I want ahead of time. Even thought I had secured financing beforehand, they gave me several other financing options to choose from. My latest sales person was Matthew Williams, he was excellent to deal with and was always a text, phone call, or email away when I had a question. I had narrowed my selection down to two cars. They were ready for test drive when I arrived. Matthew was very patient with me as it took me awhile to make a choice between the two. The entire experience was pleasant, easy going and fast, including the business office. I literally drove the car from his place to mine when the car stopped on me,and my husband and we had it towed to the nearest carmax where I found out that Carmax Austin South sold my brother a car that needed a new battery, alternator, and a new positive terminal this is ridiculous I have never bought a car from Carmax and dealing with my brothers situation I would never purchase a car from carmax I'll go to Auto Nation. No car should break down when you first get the car and the car has paper plates on it. People y'all need to be very careful if you decide to purchase a car at any carmax I would also suggest that you have a mechanic check the car out before signing any paperwork. Off the lot there was issue with dashboard lighting (the screen for the radio channel/volume extremely dim) but they said they'd fix it if we call and bring it in. Should've been a sign I guess. Car is not even running atm. Called the lot and they said earliest they can look at it is Tuesday (it's Monday), which I'm guessing means the fix won't come til after. It's my day off, now I'm spending it trying to get the car towed and get a loaner. If it's something like the battery or alternator they definitely should've caught it before the sale. This was my first experience buying a used car Infiniti QX50 and the process was pretty straightforward. However, the car had issues when they sold it to us which were not disclosed with the infotainment system and microphone in particular. Normally, we would not see this as a big deal, but the service department at CarMax South is the absolute WORST. We took the car in a few days after purchase and the service center made what is normally a 3-hour fix, replacing the microphone, into a 3-week issue. Come to find out via Carmax and Infiniti, that the Carmax service person (who was supposedly an Infiniti specialist which we had to wait 3 days for him to arrive) incorrectly installed the microphone and short-circuited the car's computer system. Carmax didn't know this at the time, but realized the car was not working correctly after the microphone's installment and sent it to Nissan where it sat at the Nissan lot for a week before they were able to work on it. We spoke daily to both Carmax South's service center manager and Sara, another service center worker, and they assured us that they were in contact with Nissan and that the car was being worked on. Well, when my father and I called Nissan's service department because it had been a week with no updates on the car besides Carmax's manager telling us the problem was being worked on, Nissan's management said that our car had been sitting in the front lot because Carmax dropped the car off without telling them what the problem was and won't respond to any of their calls or texts about what the issue with the car is. So, my father had to explain to them what the problem was because when we called Carmax to confront them with this information, they denied it and claimed that perhaps my father, the one who had been in contact with Nissan's service department, was lying to me. Well, after about 2 weeks at Nissan, Nissan's service manager called us, once again because they could not get a hold of Carmax's service department, and told us they had to take the car to Infiniti because they could not figure out what the Carmax service guy had done to the car as the computer was not responding to their inputs. So, after we called Carmax, (love that the customer is acting like the middle man here) they took the car to Infiniti where the same process happened again. My dad drove to Infiniti himself because he had a suspicion that the Carmax people were well, not doing their jobs, and he was correct. The Infiniti guys were super nice and helpful and told us that Carmax was not responding to their calls or texts so my father once again had to explain the problem to them and they were able to fix the problem quickly. Three weeks later, after acting as the middleman, we finally got a call that our car was ready. The lovely part about this was the fact that when we brought the car to the Carmax service department to get fixed, the car was very clean and full of gas, when we got the car back it was filthy and the gas tank was almost empty, it was a full tank when we dropped it off and had less than a quarter tank when we recieved it back. While I understand that the car would be sitting out for a while, thanks to the Carmax service people who apparently go ghost at all hours of the day, we felt like after 3 weeks of the process and dropping off a clean car with a full tank of gas, they would at least have it in the same condition we dropped it off in. I think the best part was that someone at the Carmax service center had bluetooth paired their phone to the car and had quite the time as the volume was at close to 100 when we got in. I also think what truly speaks to the utter lack of professionalism of the Carmax South's service center is that every call we had with Nissan and Infiniti would laugh and say "I'm sorry" when we told them we were going through Carmax South. That makes me feel like many people have had this experience with this company, and perhaps it's time for management to change. Every time we addressed any of these claims with the manager or with Sara, they insinuated that we or the Nissan and Infiniti dealerships were lying even though those dealership's service managers showed us texts and calls sent to both the manager and Sara at Carmax South that went unanswered. When we called customer relations to complain, they shrugged us off and basically asked "what do you want out of this". We don't want compensation of any sort, we want the people in charge who have allowed the service center to fall into disarray to change or be changed. After this experience, we will never buy another car from Carmax South until their service center changes. read more

Never ever consider selling your car to them, this place is a total scam and will try to rip you off. I was trying to sell mi Kia but it had a bad crash on the back. It was purely aesthetic. I went in to get an appraisal to see if it was worth fixing or not. They offered me $3700, which made sense due to the crash, but recommended me to get it fixed and get it reappraised as it would make a big difference. After investing time and money on getting it fixed completely I went for a reappraisal and was shocked. They offered me $2500 with the excuse that "the prices were dropping". These two were just one month apart. My car was now in excellent condition and with no issues and they wanted to pay me that, when they have this exact same model of kia with the exact same milage listed on over $13k. I sold my car to a respectable dealer in $7000, which proves how badly this company wants to scam people. read more

I came in knowing what I wanted, money in hand, documents on standby, I was READY to buy the car. I arrive only to find out that since SATURDAY when I had interest in the car and couldn't test drive it until today and thought it was on hold was actually ALREADY SOLD. One week ago, I brought my 2013 Range Rover Evoque in to the CarMax South service center for a routine oil change and to check out a slight fuel smell I had observed upon startup in the recent cold months. (This car was purchased at the same CarMax a few years ago.) At the end of the day, CarMax delivered the results of their diagnostic analysis and an $8,396 repair estimate citing engine light error indication for 19 separate codes, severe exhaust leak and a need to replace a cracked turbocharger and worn exhaust manifold gaskets. $6,983 of this estimate was the stated price for the turbocharger part alone. CarMax said this amount was the lowest price quote and it came from the local Land Rover dealer directly. I obtained an independent second opinion and price quote from a knowledgeable and reputable mechanic. The mechanic sought a part price quote from the Land Rover dealer and found that, if the turbocharger in fact needed to be replaced, Land Rover's stated price was actually almost half of what CarMax stated. With suspicion raised, I had my independent mechanic take a look at my car. Together, we spent more than an hour in thorough physical examination and computer diagnostics with and without highway/road test. I witnessed, and he found, no evidence of check engine light bulb failure or error outstanding from all recorded history of the vehicle's last 21,000 miles. The mechanic found that the turbocharger and any related areas of my car are fully functional. In other words ... there is absolutely nothing wrong with my car. The minor fuel smell I had originally observed is simply something to be expected with this particular model of car and occasions of cold weather. After 24 hours, 5 calls, waiting on hold for 25 minutes and leaving multiple messages I still have not been able to reach the department supervisor for response. I bought a $37k car plus a 5 year warranty less than 2 months ago. They are now refusing to honor my warranty I purchased through them when my vehicle'/a computer system stopped working. Just spent two hours waiting to test drive two cars. I understand it's busy. I understand it's Saturday. After an hour they gave me to a man who only had ten minutes before his appointment. He was misinformed I was looking for an appraisal. I never write these reviews. I will say that this man was very apologetic and kind. However, once he left to his appointment, I then sat there another hour with no help. Thus I left. I felt like a little cog in their great big machine. Probably because I am a 66-year old Baby Boomer. Maybe a Millenial would feel differently. I bought a good car successfully from them in late August 2018, but these observations: 1. Little to No Personal Service. I started by meeting my salesperson in her cubicle at the North Austin CarMax dealership; where I learned she earns a commission of only $160 on each car she sells, and she has more than 100 clients at a time. My expectation that she might actively conduct a nationwide search for my desired car was broken when several weeks passed with no word from her. Finally I went onto CarMax's excellent, user-friendly website and conducted my own search. It is an excellent website and helped even an old codger like me find my desired car some 800 miles distant. But don't count on the CarMax salesperson lifting a finger in this search. Count on doing it yourself. 2. Absolutely NO FLEXIBILITY! a). Mandatory Arbitration Clauses, I know as a retired attorney, are always bad for the buyer. When I told my salesperson that I would be striking through the Mandatory Arbitration Clause in my sales contract; she replied that this would simply be impossible; that it was non-negotiable; take it or leave it. b). After the car had been delivered to the North Austin CarMax dealership, my personal inspection and test drive revealed a wind noise; an air leak in the driver's door or window. I obtained a good-faith estimate from a local body shop: $300 to $600 for repair. I proposed a $400 reduction in the price to CarMax on this $26,000 car. Again; absolutely no flexibility: Not negotiable; take it for the agreed price or leave it. Having paid $650 already for the car's transportation to Austin; I caved in and took the car. 3. Very Impersonal Sales Process. As a Baby Boomer, I have come to expect that a car dealership will actually pay attention to me when I buy a car.: Offer a cup of coffee; answer all my questions fully and immediately. At CarMax North Austin, I felt like a piece of meat; a piece of grist for its mill. To-wit: a. During my test drive (in my case, two), my salesperson sat silently in the back seat, calmly texting away, conducting her business over her iPhone, giving me no instruction about this car's features or operation; paying as little attention to me as possible. Her main contribution to the test drive was to tell me NO, I certainly could NOT deviate from the dealership's prescribed five-mile test drive route. b. After accepting the vehicle, there is a lot of paperwork. A thoughtful dealership would have you fill out a form with your required personal info; then invite you to retreat to a comfortable lounge while they completed all the paperwork. But at CarMax; No; you sit in your salesperson's tiny cubicle for more than an hour as he/she painstakingly completes each required form on her computer screen. Then she had to call in a supervisor to examine my bank account electronically to make sure my check would clear the bank. c. Then I was ushered into a large "Signing/Closing" department office, where I was seated in a chair at a bank teller-type window in a chair markedly lower than (making you feel inferior to) a to-me-totally-new Closer Lady who made me wait for yet another ten minutes before attending to me. By now I had been cooling my heels in the CarMax process for about two hours. FINALLY, after having been made to feel about as special as a hex nut in a stamping machine, I was escorted unceremoniously out to my new car with nary a "Thank You" nor a "Come Back and See Us!" I must admit that CarMax does provide a terrific tool, its website, for conducting your own nationwide search for a car. But beyond that, the in-person experience at the dealership I found to be: A) Dehumanizing; B) Totally inflexible; C) Totally Devoid of any hint of Personal Experience. If this is your idea of a good car-buying experience, then by all means I urge you to patronize the North Austin CarMax. I myself will never return. read more

Carmax intentionally low balls people when they go sell there car to them beware of this and when I went to get my car appraised for selling the worker at Carmax doing the appraisal scratched up my car and damaged it. Then said because of the condition of the car that is why the appraised price was low. Take it from me do yourself a favor and sell the car on your own use Facebook marketplace or newspaper or anything but using Carmax they take advantage of sellers by low balling you and according too a relative they sell crappy used cars that breakdown soon after purchase beware. read more
