Ordered a BMW to be shipped to Knoxville at the end of January and paid the fee. In checking the status of the vehicle, it arrived in Knoxville early February.. I was not kept informed of the status and asked to schedule a test drive for another BMW but was told I could not as I had a vehicle pending..I could have come the same day to test it but I live 25 miles away and was not able to adjust my schedule. Long story short, I drove to Bristol (250 miles RT) and test drove 2 cars, and bought an Audi.. completely difference experience as the staff in Bristol actually understand customer service. Incidentally, the CarMax Knoxville BMW was ready for me to test drive on2/19.. took them about 2 weeks to "prep" the car. I did send an email with my displeasure but did not, and do not expect to receive a response.. Stay away from CarMax Knoxville.. very disappointing read more

Probably the BEST car shopping experience ever. My mom, grandpa, and I were so pleased with the experience. We made an appointment, checked in with our salesman, and he then told us to go out to the lot and look at whatever we wanted while he waited INSIDE. All the cars were unlocked so we were able to get in and look around without having a salesman standing over us. If we wanted to test drive, we just went in and got our salesman. This experience was so relaxed compared to previous experiences and we even left with a car that day! I didn't have a car to trade in so I don't know what that is like, but the shopping/buying process was phenomenal. read more

I bought TWO cars here in August 2018, paid in full, cash, and still haven't received the titles to the cars. Furthermore, one of the license plates was missing for six weeks, but I was told that "they were mailed, you will have to get a police report and report it stolen." I did as they said and guess what I was told by the Knox County Sheriffs office? Carmax never sent the paperwork in to register the vehicle. Incompetent. So I paid for two cars in full, and 11 weeks later, I still have no proof of ownership. No titles. Infuriating. read more

I initially went to get an offer on my 2003 Honda CRV. Because of the age, I was told they would sell it to a wholesaler and therefore not to expect too much. I received a very generous offer and accepted on the spot. Since there is a sales tax savings if you 'trade in' your vehicle, I decided to look around. CarMax has a superb website with great filters, so I entered my criteria with a 250 mile search radius. The car I wanted was in Nashville, but since there was no transport fee (sometimes there is) and I had time, I placed the order. I was advised more than once that when the car arrived in Knoxville I could change my mind with no penalty. I love the concept of a set price, take it or leave it. No haggling, no pressure. If I ever need another car, I will definitely go back to CarMax. read more

Carmax is a horrible company. They rip people off by charging retail price for vehicles for which they paid wholesale. They will tell you that their "inspection" is very valuable. I worked there for five years, and the inspection is an oil change and a quick exam of the vehicle. It is NOT worth the thousands they charge for it. Many of their vehicles are dirty and disheveled. Many times, there will be mechanical problems (unless you get lucky). They will push their warranty "Maxcare". However, it is a horrible ripoff and the service dept will often try to find loopholes to avoid covering repairs. You could have the warranty and still get stuck with a large repair bill. You would be better off finding a vehicle online and having your own trusted mechanic inspect it. You can change the oil yourself and save lots of $$$. Or buy brand new. Carmax spends lots and lots of money in marketing and advertising to promote and create a user-friendly, casual image. This is just a facade. Skip Carmax and go elsewhere. read more

I'm only giving CarMax 4 stars because their customer service during the buying experience was excellent. I transferred a vehicle from another location thinking that it had a DVD player. When I came to look at it, it did not. CarMax refunded me my transfer fee and gave me a credit towards DVD installation. I scheduled my installation and when I came to drop my car off the service representative told me he didn't know how long the install would take. I asked if they had a loaner I could use for the day because I had to pick up my children. The service rep more or less told me "too bad" and that there was nothing he could for me and that they could give me a shuttle ride but it only goes one way. He was VERY rude. I will not ever use their service department nor would I recommend it. However, my car buying experience was GREAT! read more

Buying a new car is bittersweet. Sure it's exciting to drive away in something with that new car smell, but it always means going through the car buying process. Let's be honest. That's nothing short of miserable. When I recently asked the social media world to recommend a place to buy a car, unanimously I was referred to CarMax. I took to the interwebs and found that I could apply for financing online, which I took advantage of. Within hours, I was approved for financing and had an appointment to test drive a few cars that I had found online. Once I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. There were no vultures circling the parking lot and no one jumped me as I walked into the dealership. I met with Scotty, who I had made my appointment with. We went over what I was looking for both financially and also in a car. He was down to earth and never belittled me, which I'm sure is a first in the car industry. He let me run the show and drive what I wanted to drive. He never tried to talk me into or out of any cars. After test driving several cars, we went inside to work numbers. I expected the nightmare game that we all dread. There was none of that. I worked with Scotty all the way through the whole thing. He plugged numbers in the computer and it spit out my payment info. There was no going back and forth....it really was that simple. Truly no haggling...what a concept! If you find yourself in a need of a car, I would HIGHLY CarMax. Ask for Scotty. I purchased a 2012 Toyota Prius 4 from CarMax back in late October of 2015 and have been very satisfied with my overall experience and the vehicle I purchased. I stopped in the store to look specifically at the vehicle I purchased. From the time I left my home and drove to Knoxville somebody had placed a hold on the car but my salesman Norm Heath allowed me to test drive the car and look it over. He told me when the hold would be released if the other customer did not come in to look at the vehicle and told me I could place a hold for up to 7 days on the car once it was released since my ability to get to Knoxville was limited by my schedule. I waited the three days and found the car I wanted had the hold released and placed a hold on it myself. I had arranged my own financing but also submitted an online application through the CarMax site when placing the hold. CarMax was able to provide better finance terms than I was able to procure on my own. I entered the dealership on the day I scheduled to pick my car up and signed the papers. The entire process was painless and I loved that I never had any high pressure sales people trying to up sell me or haggling over pricing. I had researched the value of the car I wanted and felt I got the best deal possible. Other than offering an extended warranty nobody at CarMax offered me anything outside of what my interest were. Norm was professional and answered all my questions to my satisfaction. I cannot recommend CarMax enough with the experience I had and all my future vehicle purchases will be made after checking out CarMax and their inventory first. read more

Let me preface this review by stating for the record that the poor rating is not based on sales or service. I have been especially pleased over the years with the service department. Sales staff have been friendly and most cars are priced well within the NADA retail ranges used by lending institutions. I cannot say the same for the appraisal group at Carmax in Knoxville, TN. I have been a patron of this particular store for well over a decade and have purchased a total of 5 vehicles from them in that time period. My wife and I went on 4/14/16 with the full intention of closing on our 6th vehicle from Carmax Knoxville. We had narrowed it down to 3 vehicles from which we were deciding, when the appraisers came back with a low-ball offer on our vehicle that was $625 below even "rough trade-in", according to NADA, let alone the thousands it was below even "average trade-in" or "clean trade-in." Needless to say, what would have been a closed sale that evening ended up with me walking out from what was nothing short of a personal affront. All categories noted by the appraiser said "good", except for one very small cosmetic blemish of a slight crack in the bottom of the front plastic grille, which sells online for $87.25. I am far from and uninformed or uneducated car buyer. The salesman did not know what to say, when I produced the printout from NADA showing the trade-in prices for that particular vehicle with its options and mileage. When another salesman emailed me a few days later and doubled down on their perceived validity of the appraisal, I decided at that point that has come time for Carmax and our family to end our retail relationship. We were not set on having to have the top trade-in value NADA listed but to offer even 'below' the bottom of the scale is insulting to someone with such a well-maintained vehicle. Not only did the opportunity for them sell us our 6th car from their store cease that evening, they also threw away yet another sale within 2 months of that same date for my daughter, who is being stationed back stateside with the U.S. Navy, since she has asked me to help her find a car to buy. read more

I had to wait one extra week due to unforeseen circumstances to which Chris never wavered. So patient with me that I'll be going back in 2 weeks for the wife to purchase a Kia. Car was cleaned, serviced, and the traditional yellow bow! I was treated by Chris as if I was a millionaire. My third experience of purchasing a vehicle from CarMax was just as seamless as I remember the first one being! Tasha Quay is amazing at what she does, and I would have not had this experience any other way (wouldn't change a thing). I was in the position to put 90% of my car's total sticker price as a down payment, so I was very discerning as to who I dealt with, and I visited a few local Jeep dealerships in the area to test their waters. Not that those experiences were bad experiences, but knowing what CarMax has to offer in the way of a no-haggle, relaxing experience, this amplified the contrasting experience of these other brand-specific dealerships, and the entire hassle that you have to deal with...haggling for prices, knowing full well that they are expecting you to use certain tactics with them, and of course they have reactive tricks and tactics to use with you. I would rather not deal with such things! It felt so good to be in control of the situation, to choose who had the most value, quality, and positive experience. It took me bringing three cars in (at a much cheaper fee to have the cars transferred in than the other places) to find my perfect Jeep GC Limited. I got the best car, and the best price! And Tasha was very patient and SO chill, through the three week process. You cannot beat the chill and relaxing experience at Carmax! We purchased a vehicle from CarMax on or about 22 Aug 21. Since our purchase, the check engine has come on. Two weeks after our purchase we had the vehicle in for repairs at CarMax. CarMax guarantees 100% cost of repairs, or no charge to the customer, during the warranty period; however, the vehicle was returned a second time and an additional third time. The third time we were guaranteed a loaner vehicle while our newly purchased vehicle was to be rediagnosed. At the time we were told to "you are free to have a seat." After a considerable amount of time, we were told "there is no car in inventory." Not sure what that meant. Tried to have the sales manager come to talk to us but he did not have the courtesy. We left without our loaner and in our vehicle that has a check engine light on. These individuals are not pleasant but rather rude, obnoxious, and belligerent. The General Manager, Sales Manager, and Service Manager all could care less about how you are treated after you purchase a vehicle. (Knoxville, TN) I was to have received a call back from CarMax; however, that never came. read more

David was my go-to person during the whole process. He called me every day to give me updates. He also made sure I had a loaner vehicle to drive while my car was being worked on. They only get 2 stars because the buying wasnt so bad. But we immediatly starting finding things wrong with the vehicle that they missed during the "inspection" they are so proud of. Actually we found so many things wrong that I highly doubt that the inspection was even done. The first severel things we found that needed fixed they sent us to the Ford dealer to have repaired and they had it back in a week. As soon as we got it back we found other things that needed to be fixed, this time they refused to send us to the ford dealer and they have had it for coming up on 5 weeks, and have no idea when it will be finished. They have been rude, and completely unhelpful. I bought the car at the beginning of March, and its almost the beginning of June and I have only been able to drive the car for a month. At this rate my 90 day warranty will be over before I get my car back....and then what do I do when i find more things wrong??!! DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM THEM! This was the worst car buying experience ever. I schedule an appointment for a test drive and waited almost thirty minutes. I complained after a 15 minute wait since other salesmen were standing around. After issues with financing from a previous sales associate this transaction fell through. I requested to test drive another car and again waited several minutes while several other sales consultants stood around goofing around with each other. I finally got up and walked out and a manager said have a nice day. I walked out of the building with the manager following me out. He yelled "That's not smart." I stopped and asked "what." If you want immature sales consultants and a poorly run facility selling you a 20-30K car, this is the place. I bought the same car elsewhere for a better price. Horrible experience from initial contact to final "detail" of the vehicle. I was given three different dates of arrival for my transferred vehicle without follow up when the dates changed. Additionally, I was told my vehicle would be washed and cleaned out before the purchase. It had not even gotten wet when I was given the keys to take it home. I had to make another trip to the dealer to have the cleaning done. Multiple service associates announced that they didn't have me on the books when I arrived for the detail appointment. I took it to a third party for inspection, all checked out except for the rust on the undercarriage that I missed. After several opinions, I finally decided to return it 3 days later. It was absolutely painless, and I was done in 15 minutes. They just wanted to know why, but didn't try and pressure me into something else. Best car buying experience ever. I had seen a lot of what I thought were high prices, but the fact that THEY DON'T CHARGE A DOCUMENTATION FEE made the prices look a lot better. The price is no longer a hassle at most traditional dealers, but the finance office will rake a buyer over the coals. Not so at Carmax. My 2013 Accord ( a great car that they transferred from a couple of hundred miles away with no fee) had a problem that I didn't notice until two days later. They fixed the problem with no hassle. I bought a Volvo from Carmax in Knoxville, TN. I also bought the extended warranty to cover repairs. The last time I took it there was to repair a door that wouldn't open. I was told it would take 2 hours to repair. 6 hours later it was still not completed. I ended up in a heated argument with the service manager who complained that Volvos are 'over-engineered', so it took longer. They're Volvos, that's sort of what they're famous for. Today I took it in to get work done on the navigation system. I made an appointment a couple of weeks ago and showed up at the arranged time. 2 hours later I wanted to check the status of the repair. There's a monitor in the waiting room that's supposed to share that information but it was turned off. The one in the service department showed 'in progress' but in fact the car hadn't moved from where I left it. I asked why and was told my appointment was to drop off the car to have it repaired by the end of the day. I was never told that, so wasted 2 hours waiting. I had a feeling this would happen so also made an appointment with the Volvo dealership for tomorrow. It seems Carmax is certainly glad to sell an extended warranty but not so enthusiastic about the actual service. read more

Last month I had my first ever experience buying from Carmax. In deciding to purchase through CarMax I was exposed to many negative reviews of various types on the Net. I ultimately rejected those opinions as typically made by persons unfamiliar with the process involved or otherwise uninformed. The fact is that this business did not grow to be a Fortune 500 business by disappointing its customers. I am glad I chose to go ahead and my experience as a customer was a great success. I had a vehicle brought to Knoxville for my inspection and was pleased with the result. From beginning to end my purchase was smooth and as expected. I even wound up trading s vehicle which I had intended to sell privately because the price I was offered was competitive enough to be more attractive than the hassles of a private sale. Not the best experience. Had to wait 4 weeks for a car to be transferred in to find it was in horrible shape. I thought car max would have higher standards in what they sold. I decided to give CM another chance and waited another 2 weeks for a car that they told me would take no more than 7 days to transfer. The business office didn't know what they were doing and caused us multiple trips back to the store, they didn't refund our transfer fee like they told us they did 3 times and overall didn't receive the sense that they cared weather or not I purchased a car from them or not. I did most to all of the the research finding the car I wanted with very little help from carmax to make a sale. Come to find out when I went to refinance I paid too much for the value of the car so I was unable to finance the car through another bank at s lower interest rate. We were under a time crunch for needing a car for Monday morning on a Sunday afternoon in February 2016. Decided to go to CarMax in Knoxville, TN to get some price ideas since we knew their reputation rested on their honesty. Then we were going to shop around other places to do some comparison shopping. But the sales person assigned to us at CarMax was so great - personable, helpful, non-pushy - that we ended up buying a car from her (a 2013 Nissan Vesta) within a couple of hours. The employees stayed until after closing hours to finish up the process, even taking time to allow us to take pictures of the new purchase with the big bow on the hood after all was done.
