I would have rated them a negative 5000 but we all know that is not possible. To begin, they sell LEMONS!!!!! (we know from experience, twice now) Service department sucks. They never fix the issue. Day one check engine light came one, They reset the codes. Never fixed or dug into the issue. The timing chain has been rattling since day one. They stated we don't know what we are talking about. (We have taken to other mechanics and they state the timing chain is bad) Service advisors are RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. Throwing pens at my wife, verbally abusing her and the list goes on and on and on Recommended to NOT BUY HERE. If you do, we feel sorry for you. Trust us when we say go elsewhere. The letter was dated August 4th and as of September 29th we have yet to receive any correspondence from anyone from the corporate office. Based on our experience we will not use Carmax again. Chad a sales employee discriminated me based on my age and ethnicity because I was "too young" to purchase a vehicle that was approved by my local bank ! I had simply asked for a test drive and chad was very discriminating towards me! When I made the call to speak with a manager, Monica very rudely disregarded my complaint about her employee and didn't really care about what I had to say! It's very upsetting to walk into this kind of environment. I was referred to CarMax by a friend saying it was a very easy experience so when my son was ready he found a car on the site, contacted a salesman and was the best and easiest experience I've ever seen. A couple months later I was ready to buy. I was fortunate to be placed with David at the Tolleson location. David was accommodating and professional while also personable. He communicated with us every step of the way and never left us wondering what was going on. I would like to post two separate reviews, one for the sales team and one for their service department. The sales process went very smoothly, Trent, was professional and friendly. Got us the best deal we could get with our credit issues. We purchased a 2013 Grand Caravan, the only issue was a the low pressure light for the tires was on. Trent informed us that they checked all four tires everything was fine. Asked me to drive it a couple of days see if the light went off on it's own. It did not. I drove it for two weeks, went to the website (which needs serious work) to see if I could schedule an appointment, I could not. I called the service department and asked if I could bring it back it on Saturday. Service department is not opened on Saturday and Sunday (not very customer friendly, at least not for customers who work full time). Also we live 24 miles away from this dealership. The next week I was on vacation, CarMax business office called me to tell me they had my tags and plate. I was on vacation so I drove to the dealership the next morning, got there when the service department opened at 7:30am. The customer service representative, sorry I didn't get his name, informed me that he could not work me in today but could schedule me for the next week. I had to go back to work, which is at 25th Avenue and Happy Valley. Then he asked if I could leave it with him all day, he would "try" to get someone to look at it. I asked if he could provide a ride home, of course not, I live too far away. Also no offer of a loaner vehicle for the day. The business office didn't open until 10:00am I had assumed that whatever was wrong it would probably take until then to get fixed and it would all work out. There was no indication on the CarMax website for this location that you needed an appointment to get your vehicle looked at, much less an appointment for a problem that was there on a vehicle I had just purchased from them. Other dealerships are able to accommodate walk-ins but then other dealerships are open on Saturday and Sunday, even if it is just half days. I can't wait to get this issue resolved so I do not have to go back to this dealership. read more

When I decided to use the five day return policy because the car didn't run well, they said they would keep my downpayment and apply it to the overage from my trade. While I did experience some of the less scrupulous dealerships, I wanted to praise those doing the right thing. CarMax was one of the highlights of the week. We stopped by today just to tour the lot in search of a new vehicle and were blown away by the service that we received here. I had never heard of car max before and after driving past it on the freeway for months I finally decided to give it a try. We walked in and were instantly greeted by receptionist. They allowed us to walk the entire lot without being hassled the whole time by a car salesmen. When we found a car that we liked we went inside and were helped by a lady named Sky. I took my truck to Carmax they gave me a very low offer but didn't have a lot choices going through a divorce. I needed my decree to be able to sell the truck. There offer was good for 7 days. I didn't get decree for 21 days. During that time, I didn't drive the vehicle anywhere. They told me if less than 50 miles were on it the offer would still be good. I took it back and the same person that looked over the car looked over it. They knew my desperate situation and tried to offer me 1000.00 less. I will never go back to Carmax again. I waited almost 2 hours last night at the CarMax in Gilbert to get my vehicle appraised. Their appraisals are a joke, sale your car privately on Facebook or Cars.com for free. They wanted to give me $3500 for my beautiful 09 Ford Expedition 4x4 in perfect condition. My Ford has 153K miles and will probably get another 100k. I will just keep my perfect SUV, it runs great. CarMax has made a fortune lowballing their customers and selling their cars at a price thats higher than other dealerships. CarMax is a joke, I did not want to give them the 1 star! read more

TRENT IS THE MAN!!! My girlfriend has purchased three cars from this dealership before with the help of Trent (amazing guy I highly recommend him) and told me that they are very good. So I decided to start looking for my next car from carmax. I found a car I really liked (2014 Chrysler 300s) I called the dealership to set up a transfer from Henderson. TJ assists me with the transfer (that's where I made my mistake should have went to Trent). He tells me it'll arrive within a week. So about 6days passes and TJ calls me and tells me the car is in. I'm all excited and go there right after work to find out the car isn't sellable. Not just that I couldn't even drive it. The reason why is because he had a rock chip while it was in transfer, he said it'll take all day the next day to fix and that it'll be fine to buy in 24hours. The next day I didn't get a call from him so I decided to txt him. He said that they haven't even started. And that most likely it would be fixed the following day. I'm a very patient person so I said ok. Next day I come in and test drive it I ended up Liking the car. We ran the app and It came up with too high of an APR. I told him I will come the next day with a co-signer and for him to hold the car for me. He said sure. The next day I stayed at work late but did let him know 3hours in advance that I wasn't going to make it and that I will be coming in tomorrow for sure to buy the car. The following day I decide to talk to Trent about it because I realized that the car was up for sale. Trent tells me that car is in the process of being transferred to a different location. I didn't get any notice of this. Tj did not get a hold of me and tell me what's going on. He just put it back on the site. Not one call or txt back. Not a good salesmen what's so ever. Very impatient. TRENT is amazing and very helpful. He has been sending me cars left and right. That's who I'm buying my next car from. Over all this place isn't bad. On 8/23 I contacted Tolleson, AZ Carmax to buy a 2018 TTRS Audi with 1K miles located at the Roseville CA Carmax location. I agreed to a cash sale of $64k plus transfer cost of $800 on 8/24. Over the next 5 days I had to push the 2 different sales people assigned to get updates that were filled with nonsense until day 7, when I directly contacted Roseville only to be informed the car had been transferred to Buffalo, NY several days before. I spent lots of wasted time trying to stay informed about this process only to be aggravated. Stay away from this location. read more

I honestly, sincerely, hope other buys see all these reviews. Like many other people, I didn't read the reviews prior to buying a car. This was my first buy, and my families 2nd car financing. The first time was from Honda directly. I bought the car, 10,000 with 8.9 APR including GAP and their own warranty. Not bad. The car was a 2014, holding at 63k in miles. Within minutes of driving it on the freeway it's shaking like crazy, turns out the tires are SHREDDED. Beyond belief, they won't honor a simple tire trade since it was my responsibility to check it before driving off the lot. Given. Oil change, trash. Hadn't been changed since they got the car, thick black oil with maybe 2 quarts in it. Shocks, horrible if I wanted to ride a roller coaster I'd drive to California and pay for a nice getaway for cheaper. Here we are a few months later, my fan went out. Changed the fuse, twice and they pop within minutes of driving. Left rear blinker went out, right blinker went out and my entire brake lights went out. And electrical is not covered in the 5,000 I paid extra for in warranty? Are you fkn kidding me? I could've bought a better car from Craigslist for a fraction of the price, and if I got a lemon I wouldn't be as a issed as I am now having been locked in a 5 year contract. GUYS. Do yourself a favor, buy off Craigslist. Or pay the extra bucks to buy it straight from a dealer. Please. read more

Get a 3rd party inspection on your car before your 5 day return policy ends. You absolutely must do this before your 30-day warranty ends. I bought an excellent-condition "certified used" truck from CarMax. Sales process was great. In-and-out in under 1 hour. Literally on my way home, I noticed some issues with the steering. Complained and took the truck in to the CarMax service center. Turns out, their mechanic found four issues with the vehicle --all which should have been found in their 125 point inspection (wheel rim was not circular, alignment off, parking brake broken, steering wheel not centered, rear differential making loud noise). CarMax took care of it and fixed everything, but my truck was in the service center for over 21 calendar days. Overall, I would recommend CarMax, but do yourself a favor and get your vehicle independently checked after purchase. read more

Went out to check out some 4x4 trucks today. We were helped by Cary which at first he seamed great, pulled up the vehicles we wanted to look into. Then we asked to take a look at another truck that was marked at 55k dollars. We never talked about money or financial access prior to checking out some trucks; which we were on a purely research purpose I admit. He said we couldn't take the truck out because we couldn't afford it. At this point I was done, I expected this from another dealership but not from Carmax. The best car buying experience, ever. I walked in without an appointment on a busy Saturday. All of the sales reps were busy, so I gave them my name and phone number and started walking the lot on my own to check out the inventory. It was so nice to browse vehicles without a sales person breathing down my neck! And it's even better that EVERY VEHICLE HAS A PRICE CLEARLY LISTED. After about 10 minutes, our sales rep Quinton met us on the lot. We went inside and searched the current inventory with our parameters, and singled out 4 cars we wanted to test drive. Because we had our kids with us, we had to do each test drive twice because we all couldn't fit in the car with the sales rep. Quinton didn't act annoyed at all. He was totally patient with us. After all the test drives, we were still lukewarm. Again, no pressure was put on us to buy. After the 3rd test drive in what we thought was going to end up being "the one", we found a different car that we fell in love with. I checked TrueCar.com while we were sitting there, and confirmed that we were getting an exceptional price. With no haggling. We applied for financing and were approved in seconds with multiple offers. From there, it was as simple as printing out a pay-stub and going online to add the car to my insurance policy. Done. It was such a night and day difference from the last time I bought a car. No pressure from a finance goon to buy gap coverage and an extended warranty...just a simple "no thanks", and that was it. I went to the back, swiped my debit card for my down payment, 5 minutes later I was signing paperwork, and 5 minutes after that I was driving away in my new car. I actually left a used car lot with my dignity intact! And with a smile on my face! Two days later, we decided to get my old car appraised. The process of appraising the vehicle, getting an offer, accepting the offer and having a check in our hands? SO EASY. Start to finish in well under an hour. The offer was almost exactly what KBB estimated for trade in value. If you are considering buying a used car, you cannot go wrong with CarMax. It is an exceptional business model. read more

Years ago my ex-wife and I took her soon-to-no-longer-be-with-us Jetta to the recently opened CarMax in Virginia Beach. They ended up giving us almost $3000 more than what the Mini dealership offered her on the Jetta. Later this would make sense as to why I am no longer married to her. Really, who drives a Mini Cooper? Clearly not someone I could share a bed and meals with! But I digress... Went out to the Carmax here in Phoenix, and they were great. Sunday afternoon, really expected a slow show as it was a) Sunday and b) football time. Couldn't have been further from how it actually went down. Guys were total professionals. Got my truck in, appraised it for $9000, and were really straight up and straight forward on how they wanted to do business. Ended up getting the same offer for my truck when I went to buy my new FJ, so I just did the trade at the dealer. However, it was great to have the offer from Carmax as a stick to make sure I didn't get back ended in the price for my truck. I really suggest you go out to Carmax if you're in the market to trade your vehicle. 1/2 hour of your time and you might make some more cash on your klunker! read more

I had a terrible experience at this place! I had scheduled an appointment to get my 2001 Ford Explorer appraised so that I could hopefully sell it to them (I was having awful luck on Craigslist trying to sell it). I was told that I was to meet with Eric Manson upon my arrival. When I got there, I was ignored for about five minutes. One gentlemen at the counter eventually asked what I was there for, and once I stated what I needed, the other gentlemen standing next to him repeatedly shook his head "no" because he didn't want to help. Umm....Okay? Not very professional. The first guy called me over, took my information and stated that I would be the first one seen in their long wait (which was the only nice part about this experience). Finally, I got called, and we walked over to my vehicle. Mind you, it was in pretty good condition for how old it was, and how many miles it had. The woman that helped me kind of insulted my vehicle saying that it would need some tweaks, and "she'll see what she can do." She told me that with my type of vehicle (I guess with how old it is??) that they don't go by KellyBlueBoook, they go by how/if it would sell at an auction- they base it on how much money they think they could get for it at a wholesale auction. Once inside, we went over all the necessary information, and she told me that someone would be out there shortly to appraise my vehicle. This took 30 minutes. When it was ready, I was to be called on the phone to be notified. The woman operating the phone called me THREE times and didn't know how to work her phone. Whatever. I walked inside, and she went over what the appraisal came back with. She stating that everything about my vehicle was in Good or OK condition - just as I thought. Then. She told me how much they could give me for it. $500!!! Are you kidding me?! Me, not being very into cars or not knowing as much, I was completely insulted. Right after telling me about the condition it was in, they came back with that number! I KNOW that they would be able to get more for my vehicle at an auction than that. I honestly felt like I was being scammed. I walked out of that place telling them that there is no way that I would sell it to them for that. Immediately upon leaving, my boyfriend re-posted my vehicle to Craigslist, and sold it for $1,500 within TWO HOURS!!! Before you sell your car to CarMax, be sure to know that value of your vehicle. I knew how much mine was worth, and I felt completely taken advantage of, disrespected and ignored at this place. read more

I bought two vehicles from CarMax and they both have been decent cars. The prices are always fair and customer service for the most part is good. The thing I hate the most is trying to schedule an appointment with service. They usually never answer the phone which is understandable it's a busy place and they are running around. What they really have to work on is returning a phone call. I don't mean returning a phone call within a reasonable amount of time, just returning your call in general. I've called on several occasions to schedule an oil change and have never received a call back. Even after leaving my name, my number, the reason for my call and my vehicle make and model. I hope someone is monitoring this and does something about it. I will be looking to take my vehicle somewhere else for an oil change. read more

I will say that they have an excellent selection of vehicles country wide and the prices on these used cars are very fair. The problem I've seen wasn't customer service or anything like that but was professionalism from a manager there. I'm assuming the sales girl there was new because she seemed like she had a lot of questions for the manager that was there. All she did was ask a simple question and the manager got upset and blew up in her face and yelled at her at the top of his lungs in front of EVERYONE. The other sales reps, other managers and most importantly customers. This all happened in the middle of the store. It got very quiet and awkward I just wanted to walk out and never come back but I was about to go on a test drive. Every one just stopped what they were doing and stopped and stared the entire time. I felt so bad and embarrassed for her, I think she may have even cried. So that's why I gave this CarMax location a very low rating because it was due to that manager's lack of professionalism. The next day I came in, I saw almost every sales rep there, that same manager, but not that girl. I don't blame her if she just flat out quit due to embarrassment and being treated unfairly. I would never go back to this location again because I don't want to be the one to pay HIS bills when he doesn't deserve that pay. The manager was kind of short, caucassion, red head, freckles all over, light eyes, he even looks like a jerk even before I saw that happen. If he wanted or needed to talk to her, the right and responsible thing to do would've been to pull her aside and talk to her somewhere private. He didn't even seem like he cared. read more

I have had nothing but great experiences here at CarMax. I purchased a car from Ali who was helpful and considerate. He called me twice after purchasing to make sure the car and I were doing well. I had a problem with a rattle/shaky noise when I started up my car. I drove from Flagstaff on my only day off to find out their service section is closed on Sundays but a very helpful girl got me a loaner car to take for the week and I left my car with them. Lana and Will in the service department were awesome with how incredibly busy they were, they got to my car in a timely manner and I just picked it up today. Lana was very friendly and sweet and we had a good conversation. It sounds and feels great now and I'm sure if I ever have any other issues they will be happy to help!! :) read more

Just "sold" my car to CarMax today for about 20% of what I was led to believe I'd get. As it was a far drive, I called twice, with every detail needed and my personal concern about one issue. Fellow who wanted to handle deal told me twice that I'd get close to Kelly Blue Book. I didn't Was in no physical condition to drive the car back (had arrranged for someone to get me back), so had to bite it and take thousands less than I should have for the car. Yes, had listed on Net, but only for a few days because I needed to get car off street. IF the CarMax guy had told me the truth, I would have vastly discounted car online and if that didn't work, would have taken an offer from place I bought a new car. This way, I was lied to, wasted time, wasted energy. If people want to lowball you, that's one thing. The lying is what is inexcusable. I would NEVER sell them a car again. I would NEVER consider buying from them because if they lie like this to get inventory, I have zero faith in what it's like to buy from them. If you don't want to believe me, then I suggest you take your car to them first for their appraisal. Then list online and/or with dealer where you will buy. Go with best offer in your trimeframe. Do NOT trust anything not in writing from these people. Do not put yourself in a position of a far drive with another person to pick you up as you too will probably be sorry you did. THey'll make thousands on my vehicle because they lied. My options should have been based on honest information as honest information was provided. read more
