The transaction was a bit complicated, because I had just moved from out of state, and rather than register the car here, I just wanted to sell it off. They did a great job working through the kinks and helping me out. DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM CARMAX! I bought a car from them on July 11th period supposedly this car was inspected before I bought it. on July 19th within the 10 day window to return I brought my car back to the shop because of the fact that it felt shuddery and bad they looked at it and supposedly it was fine. On august 4th, my check engine light came up. I brought the car back. It needed it's spark plugs replaced, it's Ignition coil replaced, and the front brakes were down to the rotors. if they had told me, even one of these things was wrong with the car when I came within the 10 day window. I would have returned it immediately. Because it makes the whole thing suspect. They refuse to help me.They fixed the car, they just expect me to take it and trust them. They claim to be the better alternative to buying at a used car lot, i say it's worse, because they operate under the cloak of a big national brand that makes you feel like without the haggling, without the commission.It's a safer bet, but it's not. I had all of my documents uploaded to them before I arrived and spoke several times with my salesman, Jose. When I got to the office I was in and out in no time. Jose was wonderful, attentive, knowledgeable, and super friendly; and very last minute he was willing and able to let me change my appointment and come in a few hours early to finalize my purchase. Had a appt for 2 pm, for which got a few texts and a call to inform about what they offer, upon reaching there was told (without offering any sort of apologies) that there will be an hour to Gould and half wait time. Do we want to wait or not. After speaking with the manager, found out that the company does not have any such process of calling and letting people know if they are over booked. I would not deal with a company who does not respect my time and effort to drive there and waste my weekend. Instead there are lot more dealers who offer online services and respect a customers time as well. Due to a clerical error on their part my finance paperwork was done incorrectly. I then paid $600 to transport a vehicle based on their finance offer. Once the mistake was discovered I had to spend several long conversations to get credited back. Even after their error was discovered they did not apologize or offer to accommodate anything. Brian from the Waterbury branch came back on the line and told me I will receive a refund then hung up. This would have been the 4th vehicle I would have purchased from Carmax in about 5 years. We returned on a Sunday to find that the price had mysteriously jumped by $2000 - AKA they had a fish on the line. Fairly straight forward process to purchase a vehicle. I paid $99. upfront for them to retrieve a vehicle from the Carmax store in Maine. It arrived in Waterbury several days later. I dealt, initially with Nicole, who was pleasant and knowledgeable about the buying process. My only disappointment was that you cannot use a credit card either for a down payment or to pay for the vehicle. When I returned a few days later to pick up the vehicle I dealt with another associate who was not as well versed in the process since I was not provided with all the paperwork necessary to register my car in the state where I reside. Thank goodness, someone from Carmax had the sense to contact me to let me know that I had several documents still are Carmax. Luckily, I had Nicole's email address and personal phone # and she was able to FedEx the documents to me in time for me to register the vehicle. I would suggest that before buying from Carmax you do some research and have a very good idea of what the actual purchase price of the vehicle you are interested is from other dealers/sources aside from Carmax so you know if the price is realistic. One other piece of information: Before buying the car, I noticed that it did not have an owners manual and it needed a special SD card to get the Navigation system to work. Nicole told me if i bought these items, which I did from a local dealer, Carmax would reimburse me for the purchase. purchased a car from car max may 2019, by dec 2019 the car started having issues. By September 2020, I'm having the car towed to the location to "possibly have my extended warranty fix the issues". Unreliable cars, horrible customer service, terrible financing, all they want is a quick service to sell more. Please save yourself the headache and buy elsewhere if you can. My car is undrivable for electrical issues and misfires. 9 pages of codes..... it's all about getting people in out and the door. I would NEVER recommend carmax to anyone. My overall experience was terrible. I was not given accurate information on how to properly handle the down payment, also my license plates were damaged upon removal from my previous vehicle. As someone with a finance background as my career, the policy of not accepting major credit cards for a down payment on a car made no sense to me and should have been stated via phone, text or via the multiple e-mails sent to me prior to purchase as many people do not keep liquid funds on debit cards to just have readily available as needed. I anticipated on putting more down on my vehicle but due to this policy I was unable to. I expressed my frustration to the staff and it seemed as though they were just trying to get me out of there as this was later in the day. I am extremely disappointed and felt almost to tears - a car purchase should be an exciting time, but this was anything but. Being greeted was the only friendly part of the whole experience. Once after sitting for a little bit, as we had an appointment, we're greeted by a salesperson. It started off alright but wound up being a headache. We were passed off to a second salesperson. We were told it was because the first one was already with someone but wanted to make sure we were okay and ready to go. That was okay. As we were processing trades, after the paperwork portion was completed, the salesperson went to the car and after about 30 minutes returns. The first words said to us was "do you have any pets?" We were confused because the car is supposed to be assessed by it's features and functionality. Afterward, he immediately says something like he saw and killed a flea that got onto his arm. He continues and says something about getting sick when he was a kid he got sick from a flea bite. RED FLAG! The guy, then, gets us another salesperson and leaves to "shower and return". A new salesperson arrives and she doesn't even know that the grass is green. Nice but so flakey that I couldn't take her seriously. Test drive went okay enough but the whole laxidaisical attitude and flighty. Didn't appear like anyone was interested in our best interest in purchasing a new vehicle. By the end of the, so dubbed, experience my wife and I decided not to buy from such an uncomfortable atmosphere. I've had much better service and discussion at McDonald's. Cracked seat frame, struts worn out, sway bar links shot, front brake caliper fell out while driving it due to a bolt that was not put back when they did the pre-delivery inspection. This is after they claim they do a 120 point inspection on all vehicles. Maybe they do, but not this one. It was obvious. Service Manager denied all. Sent this pile of junk back. I use to work in the automotive industry and it is very common for me to get questions from friends regarding car purchases, repairs etc. I had a few ask me about specific used cars they were seeking and although I couldn't help them directly, I suggested that maybe they look at CarMax due to the large inventory they have. The fact that they are a corporate chain and can pull cars from here nor there seems to make a lot of sense. They also claim to select the "pick of the litter" and offer financing as well. A few friends gave it a wack and had very good luck. I figured I'd give it a try myself. I went to CarMax in East Haven to ask a sales representative what would happened if I agreed to ship a car and it came in less than what I expected. His answer was "if we misrepresented the car, you get your money back. If you back out the deal, you pay the cost". I thought... fair enough and reserved a car for shipment. I was told that the car I was interested in only had one minor exterior scratch and everything else checked out great. I shipped the car from Texas to Waterbury. The car came in and upon seeing it... it was not washed, it had dead bugs on the front, bird droppings and road grime. It also had one new front tire, one worn front tire and two different tires on the back. The headlight lenses were yellowed and clouded. It had a noteworthy amount of road abrasion wear to the front valance as well as chips, dings, and a repainted bumper cover. It was an average used car at best. Certainly not the selective inventory of reconditioned cars that CarMax claims they have on their website. When I declined the sale, I was still charged the shipping cost of $849.00! I did look on their website and saw in writing that the freight charges were indeed non-refundable. Seems like the young man I talked to initially about this was ill informed. Although disappointed, I will give credit where credit is due... the facility at CarMax was incredible and the staff was friendly and pleasant to work with. I really liked the no-haggle price format and the no-pressure sales approach. It really felt like they were there to help and not sell. What really surprised me tho was that there was no immediate response to my dissatisfaction with the car outside of "sorry, looks like we need to do better". Geez! I was disappointed to say the least. However... I wrote to corporate and to my sales agent and in detail stating my feelings about the matter. I did receive a call the next day from my sales rep who said that they discussed the situation with management and had some VERY fair recourse to fix the situation. I was pleased with what they had proposed and found it very fair. I will say that although the car didn't work out for me, it wasn't a bad experience overall. I would suggest that if you are going to have a car shipped in, make sure you have your sales person REALLY drill the person on the other end who is looking at it, because everyone seems to have their own level of acceptance. If there is wear and tear to be found, try to get all the details "before" you ship it in. It will save everyone a lot of hassle and expense. read more

He was so helpful and answered all 100 of my questions and set me up with Nicole. Nicole is a superstar. Very understanding and tentative. Nicole stayed in communication with me in the whole time and did a bunch of research to find me the right car for me. MY FIRST TIME GOING TO A DEALERSHIP AND GETTING A CAR AND IT WAS A NIGHTMARE!!! I decided to get my first car from CarMax because I heard it was an amazing experience. But the only good experience was saying hello at the front desk! I had my eyes on a 2017 Subaru and my dad was going to co-sign to make the process smoother. BIG MISTAKE! We went though the process and we got approved for a loan no problem but that's when it all went down hill. After the approval process, the manager had to go over the proof of income but IT TOOK FOREVER!!! They had employees coming in and out districting him in a important process but they didn't seem to care. Then AFTER ALMOST 8+ HOURS IN THE DEALERSHIP, they told us come back tomorrow morning at 12 so we can finish the process (Because my father for got his social Security and it was about closing time). They told us "YOU HAVE THE CAR JUST COME TOMORROW" so I said ok. We come back the next day after wasting A WHOLE DAY in that dealership. And they called me right at 12 saying "We are very sorry, but the manager just told us we can't give you the car because you are using it for work". I WAS UNBELIEVABLY DISCUSSED AND BAFFLED BY WHAT I WAS PUT THROUGH INSIDE OF THIS DEALERSHIP!!! EVEN AFTER A BANK APPROVED USE FOR A LOAN!!! Lucky I went to a Hyundai dealership and got my car that same day they called me. My father brought 2 cars from them and recommended me CarMax but now HE WILL NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THEM AGAIN!! We went to CarMax in Waterbury, CT to look for a car. My son had purchased a car from the East Haven, CT location and had a great experience so we thought we'd give it a try too. Waterbury had a couple cars we wanted to see so we got pre-approved for a loan with them and made an appointment to see a car. We drove the car and then were passed off to another salesperson to look at a second car. We wanted to buy it but was told that it was on hold for someone else. However there was one in RI that they could transfer in for us to see and it would just take a couple of days. This was on December 29th. Just got a call TODAY (January 20th) that the car is ready for us to look at. ARE THEY SERIOUS!!?? We were prequalified for a loan, had plates in hand and were ready to buy last month!! We ended up purchasing a certified, pre-owned vehicle on January 5th from a local Nissan dealership. From Jan 2- Jan 5, I kept emailing and calling CarMax but they never answered the phone or returned my calls or emails. So glad I didn't end up buying ng there since they were highly unresponsive. First visited Offleaseonly in Orlando. More like a assembly line never had just 1 salesman more like 5 and very rude!! Their office is way too small and crowded took over 3 hours to test drive 3 cars and they treat you like you are going to steal the car!. Young kids who know nothing about salesmanship!! Then went to GHgreg, what a joke, unorganized, test drove 3 cars and wanted to drive the first again to compare. They lost they keys and were searching over an hour. Finally sat down to buy and Dealer fees are 3 times as much as Offlease and Carmax. Went to CarMax and was very impressed, professional and very straight forward. Didn't feel like cattle being herded like Offlease. Bought my car 30 minutes later.. so easy like it should be. Never ever Offlease again where my husband has bought 3 cars. He was so impressed how simple and easy it was he will never go back to Offlease. There are other options out there people!! read more
