Elena's was our favorite place for years. We decided to try Carmela's and we're glad we did! This place is off the charts good! We ordered the mixed fajitas for one and added the shrimp. There was enough food for three people and the food was bursting with flavor! Definitely worth an hour drive for top shelf food! The service was great along with the food! We came on a Tuesday night and it was packed so that alone speaks for itself! All in all I give it 5 stars! You will not be disappointed! Our server was Maria. STAY AWAY IF YOU HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS OR DON'T WANT POOR SERVICE!!! I hardly ever write reviews, and when I do, I try to never write poor reviews. However, our visit here was so bad that I feel other guests should be aware of our experience; and hopefully, the management will also make a concerted effort to implement changes so that this does not happen again to other patrons. First off, we had an extremely rude waiter. We can put up with a lot but his bad attitude and unwillingness to follow-up with the kitchen on our dietary restrictions were absolutely unacceptable and appalling. We have people that have dietary restrictions that prevent them from eating any animal products; and instead of checking with the kitchen to make sure their rice and beans do not contain animal products, he outright lied and had the nerve to roll his eyes as he left. It's only after we went to confirm with another staff that we found out that they did indeed have animal products. This person could have gotten extremely ill. This was extremely irresponsible and could be dangerous for those with potentially deadly allergies. If you want good service and good Tex-Mex, Casa Ole is right down the street. We went there right after and the service was complete night and day. Stay away from Carmela's if you can! read more

I have been going here since it was a little shack and continue to frequent in the new location. Always had nice and speedy servers with a classic take on Tex-Mex food. They are a good catering company for events or a nice place to sit down and eat for date night. Were great at taking orders during the global pandemic and continuing to support beaumont. read more

Stopped here on the way back from helping some friends in Cameron Parish recover from Hurricane Laura. Even though we were dirty and probably smelled worse than a pigstye, Maria served us with a smile. The food was very good, fresh, and well seasoned. I had the El Torito. WOW! Lots of authentic Mexican food that tasted great. I really liked the beef seasoned with nutmeg and cinnamon. Everykne liked their food and drinks.. The margaritas were tasty and refreshing. Absolutely delicious. This is my go-to place anytime I'm back at home visiting the family. The salsa is the best in the area - full of spice and tomato. None of that watered down stuff that's at other Mexican restaurants in the area. The queso is good, the drink glasses are tall and never empty, the service is solid, the food is solid, and always on point. Only complaint is their tiny parking lot. It's always overflowing. We had the waitress with the braided bright pink hair. She was more concerned with clearing the empty table around us, than waiting on our group. We had to ask her for each and every refill and most of our group sat with dirty dishes in front of them while the others finished their meal. Don't come to our table and interrupt our conversation and ask if we need anything... Look around, size up that our glasses are empty, bring the refills, and clear the dirty dishes. And we were NOT impressed with the clown pink hair. I mean really?? The west end of Beaumont is the most conservative part of Southeast Texas and you decide to hire a waitress with streaks of bright pink hair? Some people just need negative attention and Carmela's is rewarding her freakish behavior by hiring her and putting her front and center in front of their most conservative customers. So, take this feedback or not. No clue, no tip. read more

I came in for dinner today noticed that the dining room was extremely crowded with tables and chairs packed in to try and fit as many as people in as possible. The ambiance has a low lit vibe going on but not by choice, only 3 light bulbs seem to be operational. There's also a sweet strobe light that flashed throughout the meal followed by a blaring fire alarm that would go off every time a plate of sizzling fajitas were served. So I'm not sure if it's because the majority of the patrons are predominately Caucasian, but the place is skating with the ideal it's authentic Mexican food. I ended up ordering the fajitas for one which came with side of rice, beans, sour creme, pico de gallo, and guacamole. The food came out relatively fast but that was probably the best thing about the meal. The restaurant seems pretty familiar with the ole serving trick of putting out a heap of grilled onions and peppers on a sizzling plate to hide the 5 chewy fajitas strips that were buried underneath. You also get a stingy plate of refried beans and rice that lacked any seasoning whatsoever. I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore. I'll probably regret the meal later as much as when I had it so I advise you to save your pesos and look elsewhere. read more

After seeing Carmelas on the news, my friend and I decided to dine there. The parking is terrible but we found a side street to park on. The food came out cold and we had to ask that they take it back to heat it. The most shocking thing is that they tried to charge us for using a Debit card to pay our bill. No where was this posted BEFORE we entered Carmelas. We ended up paying cash but asking for an added surcharge is a poor way to do business. We will not be going back and will let others know of this surcharge. Shame on Carmelas. read more

I imagine Carmela's to be what Tex-Mex might be like if the genre had developed in the midwestern U.S.: Carefully prepared, yawningly bland, and supremely boring. Expect religious adherence to old school Tex Mex dictums: There shall be tortilla, shredded cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato, thin chili gravy sauce, ground beef or shredded chicken, queso, rice and refried beans. Don't expect much beyond that, unless a sizzling iron plate of fajitas is your idea of a radical departure from the formula. Now, if that's what you're looking for, this may be your place: Portions are generous and carefully prepared, the bland ground beef, beans and sauces are particularly non-greasy (which does permit crispy tortillas and bland iceberg to stay intact and actually harmonize with each dish), service is pleasant enough, and the prices are right. I think of Carmela's as a place to take one's grandmother - nothing to challenge her sensibilities or upset her delicate stomach. For the otherwise discerning adult, Carmela's may pass as a comfort-food diversion, to be indulged as when one occasionally just wants a twinkie or corn dog. Truth be told, if this review seems a bit like a screed, it may be against the tastes of Beaumont diners as much as Carmela's food. When the restaurant opened in its original location, they served a small side menu of authentic Mexican food, available on a limited basis. I enjoyed those dishes, and initially liked the restaurant for that reason. As the über-gringo crowds began to grow, the side-menu authentic dishes became more marginalized and I presume have pretty much faded back into the kitchen from whence they came. So I think Carmela's may be capable of much better, but took the course of any prudent business, to serve the tastes of it's primary constituency. I don't fault them for "selling out" or any such silliness - I simply don't care to eat mindlessly bland, anachronistic Tex-Mex, thank you very much. read more

We came here because neither of us felt like cooking and we couldn't be bothered to put on anything better than jeans but we didn't want fast food. So, in essence, we were supremely lazy. I'm kind of torn on this review because I go to Tex-Mex expecting the beans and rice to be good because they are so basic. I wasn't impressed by these staples because they seemed pretty bland to me. However, with that being said, the fajitas for two (we ordered a mix of chicken and steak) were PHENOMENALLY good. Hands down, the best fajitas we've had in Beaumont. The guacamole and the pico de gallo were very fresh and the tortillas were hot, soft and home made. The chicken was spiced just right and just writing this is making me think we might hit there again for dinner tonight. Service was very good- we never saw the bottom of our glasses and our take out box was delivered quickly. We just happened to go on a Monday, where they had a deal on fajitas for two, AND we got the happy hour rates on beer. Amazing fajitas, decent service and a surprisingly good first experience for less than twenty bucks? You better believe we'll be back. Based on Yelp reviews, we decided to find this place on our way through Beaumont, Tx. It was nice to find a great place to eat while staying in a strange city. The chips and salsa were crispy and the salsa had the perfect kind of kick. My shrimp enchiladas were scrumptious as well. We also noticed as we sat there on a Friday evening, that just about everyone that came in the door seemed to know another group of patrons already eating. My first time here. I came here after one of my son's soccer tournament game with one of his teammate's family and a friend and her kids. It was about 12:30/1pm and it wasn't too pack. We were seated right away with a party of 12 including 7kids. I ordered the Enchiladas En Salsa Verde, 3 enchiladas topped with their homemade green sauce made of tortilla topped with cheese served with rice and beans, the Beef Nacho half order, and a kids Quesadilla. I thought why not go with the flow and experience a Mexican cuisine for tonight. When I entered, the staff was reluctant to greet me, as I walked in the door. The Resturant was still rather quiet but, I distinctly remember, I had to repeat myself four times, when I was asked, what I would like to drink. I responded, may I see the beverage menu please. When I finally received a beverage menu and after a little deliberation, I asked for a South American full body import; I selected "Pacifico." The waitress shrugged her shoulders and left. Carmela's is one of my go-to places when I'm in town. My Lunch Bunch likes to dine here because the wait is usually short and the service is usually quick. Of all of the lunch items, the Muy Bueno (mixed - with chicken and beef) is my absolute fave! Parking can be tricky if you arrive at a prime time, but people move in and out pretty quickly. Plus, they have quite a few spaces and you can park on the side street if necessary. If you need a quick Tex-Mex pick-me-up, this should definitely be on your list! read more

I have loved Carmelas since it started in the old Dairy Queen building, when we all ate there twice a day. I still eat here quite often with my family and friends. If you know what South East Texas tex-mex is about, you will LOVE Carmela's. I lived in South East Texas for 10 years, and always craved the Fajita Chicken Quesadilla's. There is not a better quesadilla in Texas. So wonderfully full of tender grilled white meat fajita chicken, and a perfect blend of cheeses. Since moving away from Texas, I still have dreams about those luscious quesadillas. Their chips and hot sauce are all that tex-mex chips and hot sauce are meant to be--fresh hot thin tortilla chips, and a tomato based hot sauce (from reading previous reviews of people who were upset about the "chips and salsa"--you obviously do not know that tex-mex does not include the word salsa--and if you were expecting a "Fresh-Mex" salsa bar, you better go for some California Baja mexican food). South East Texas tex-mex is all about hot sauce, gravies, and cheese. Carmela gets it right in every dimension. If its your first time going, I really recommend the fajitas. The meat is perfectly seasoned, and comes out sizzling and wonderful. Again, I am partial to the quesadillas, so you might as well order those for an appetizer. read more

NOT WORTH STOPPING FOR Dropped by while passing through based on some earlier yelp reviews. I'm guessing something very wrong happened between Aug 2009 and now because post 8-09 this place seems to be not worth stopping for. The chips and salsa were just meh. Not a good sign when Tostitos does a better job at chips and salsa than a Mexican restaurant. Ok I've been to restaurants before where the chips and salsa were nothing to write home about, but the entrees were better. Not this place. I ordered a simple rice & bean burrito and "simple" is what I received. I've heated up beans out of a can a lot tastier than what was given and the rice was nothing spectacular. Gosh if the staple menu items of a Mexican restaurant aren't good the rest probably isn't going to be...and the meat plate eaters confirmed my hunch. I know we're near the southeast border of Texas, but even Rick Perry deserves better Mexican food than here! My advice: if you're headed west go to a gas station, grab a candy bar, drive the 1.5 hrs and eat in Houston! This is my family's local Mexican favorite. We frequented this place before we had children when they were located in an old run down Dairy Queen building where Tia Juanita's is now. In my opinion, they have the best fajitas in town. Waited more than 5 minutes to pick up a "to go" order, there's no one in the counter and no one to seat guests and they're not busy, overcharged me for the beef fajitas for two ( it's good I caught it before I left the restaurant) and they corrected that. They should know how much is their fajitas for two on Mondays and not inconvenience their guests. The good thing is the meat isn't tough as usual, just like eating beef jerky! read more

I was on a road trip with some friends and decided to try this place since we had read some good reviews. As soon as we walked inside you could tell it was a family oriented restaurant. Everyone knew everyone and it was a very friendly atmosphere. The chips and salsa were delicious, probably my most favorite thing from this restaurant...the salsa was spicy and not too chunky for my taste and the flavor was excellent. I had the sour cream enchiladas and I had no complaints. The food was great and if I ever passed by this place again, I would definitely stop in. read more
