They act like it's a chore and that they're doing you a favor. Food is mid for San Antonio: Flavorless eggs and tortilla, small amount of meat and the salsas are like water. The title for this one is oil! Oil oil, and the oil. Every taco I bought for employee lunch was waaaayy too greasy/oily. It's a shame because it was affordable and semi decent tasting. The worst was the chicharron. I mean the taco felt like it was coated in oil, so much that if you weren't careful the filling would squirt out with the slightest pressure. Came for breakfast and to enjoy some quality time with a friend on Saturday morning. It wasn't very busy and the food came out quickly. I had a simple egg and potato taco and they have green and red salsa. Both were delicious! They came by several times to see if we needed anything else despite our small order and long stay. I've had the chance to try Carmelita's twice & have been satisfied both times. I'll start out with the service: it was great both times. Everyone is very attentive & kind. The ambiance is like walking into your Abuela's kitchen - this is a compliment. It feels very comforting & has a home type of vibe. I had tacos both time I visited so I'm judging based on a bean & cheese taco & a potato & egg taco. Both were great! The tortillas were fresh with an authentic feel, just like the restaurant. Subject: Authentic Mexican Flavors- Reminded Me of Home On Saturday, March 16, 2023, around 9 AM, we stopped by Carmelita's Mexican Restaurant on our way home to Houston. When you first drive up to it, it looks like a meat market from the outside. However, when you go inside, the energy and decor feel like you're in a small restaurant in Mexico. The vibe is "Alegre," aka happy, welcoming, and kind. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I asked for a sample of the menudo, and they brought me a generous amount. The menudo was delicious, and the broth was perfect. The tortillas were hand-made, and what was unique about the food is that the flour and the corn tortillas look almost the same. They were super delicious--I ate all of the corn tortillas by dipping them into my menudo broth. I also ordered a taco de barbacoa on a flour tortilla that was packed with meat, and the tortilla was so fluffy. The food is definitely authentic. The salsa "verde" was my favorite--I definitely recommend it, but only if you're brave enough for the real hot chile. We spent $60.00 for a taco de barbacoa, large menudo, 2 dozen tortillas to go, a Mexican plate of Huevos a La Mexicana, two coffees, and a $10.00 tip. I recommend this place. I'm pretty sure the rest of the menu is as delicious. You know you've hit the jackpot with authentic Mexican food when the salsa is catered to Mexican taste--crazy hot. read more

I ordered a variety of 24 tacos on Grubhub at 5:30 am for a potluck we had. I should have avoided Grubhub because when I arrived, I was quickly greeted in the parking lot where they were ready to take my order. However, Grubhub had not sent my order yet (and charged me extra to order online). Despite this, they took my order on the spot and had it ready in just 10 minutes. Great breakfast tacos on Broadway St. in downtown San Antonio. Carmelita's has very good chorizo & egg tacos. The tortillas are perfectly cooked on the flat grill, combined with the green salsa over the chorizo made me a huge fan today. The staff was friendly, and the restaurant has open seating if your dining inside. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't have my first real taco until my late teens and that was also in Texas (Houston, to be specific). And now that I've also had my first breakfast taco in Texas, I'm totally hooked--but sadly, I couldn't get the infamous San Antonio puffy tacos on this trip. I was lucky to stay near Carmelitas and walked over here for breakfast. I was so excited to try breakfast tacos--legit excited to have EGGS in my tacos. This is a very casual, come-and-go Mexican spot that seems to be popular among locals and military personnel. They had a great selection of breakfast tacos to choose from that are really cheap, too. I had the Country & Egg, Chorizo & Egg, and Huevos Mexicana tacos--they were all superb, but the Country & Egg and Huevos Mexicana stood out the most. I wish the tacos had more filling but then again, it kept me satisfied until dinnertime (with some snacks in between, of course). The service was nice and I'm sure their entrees come in huge portions and are just as delicious if I stayed here for another meal. A great place for cheap tasty breakfasts. Small cozy dining area for if you wish to eat there of you can grab your grub to go. The parking lot is also small and cozy so can be a challenge during the morning rush. The tacos are cheap and tasty. The salsa and chips are ery good. The menudo is also very good. While I don't each much Mexican food I needed a quick lunch and was informed by a helpful Enterprise agent to check out Carmelita's... I browsed the local eateries and determined that the Shuck Shack (seafood) and the Smoke Shack (BBQ) were going to take too long so within minutes I seated myself at a cramped table in the quaint but small dining area. The place was packed with workers and some military personnel. A worker busily cleared my table and before I could ask a question hustled over to another table. Another woman took my order and also hurried to clear the colorful small tables. The menu had several items to choose from and came at an affordable price. I would have loved my chalupas to have been served on a soft puffy fajita like the ones at Taco Bell but it came out on a hardened circular taco shell. The meat was well seasoned and the rice could have used a pinch of salt. My waitress never checked on me nor did I get served the appetizer of chips that other customers received. Since I was in a rush I did not complain, I ate my meal and left, hence the three Star review. Can't say its Authentic like Rosario's on San Pedro (5 stars ) .. Open for the before-work and lunch crowd, I was pleasantly surprised to find this humble Mexican cafe with peaceful patio seating out front. I would opt for this over some place like IHOP or fast food anytime you're hungry in the wee hours of the morning. Homemade corn and flour tortilla tacos were tasty. Bacon was tough and stringy, though, so I probably wouldn't get that on my tacos again. And their pancakes, while not gourmet, were tasty and nostalgic. The kid in me ordered a second round of them! The coffee was good and not acidic at all. I can't recommend their lunch menu since I didn't try it. I was very surprised they offer both breakfast AND lunch all day, even at 5am when we went! I don't know if that's a good or bad sign, but certainly was good news if you've been up all night and you and your friends are craving both breakfast and lunch food. This is my little taco place and I wouldn't have it any other way. The staff is the best. The food is ALWAYS delicious. The atmosphere feels like home. ALL walks of life are present and I love it. My go-to order is 2 Barbacoa with Aquacate. I've had their mini tacos, fideo, menudo, and carne quisada and I've always had the best food experience. What brought us in here was the hours. When you have to get to work in the wee hours this is the stop to make. They open at 5am! I needed breakfast tacos for work as they are a staple. They offer an inexpensive option and then they have some jam packed taco options also that are reasonable. Their nopal and egg tacos are amazing. The coffee is great here. Staff are awesome. They have homemade flour or CORN tortillas. The music they casually play is nice. They have a tv showing some news in the wee hours. And you don't have to just come early. I called Carmelita's to see if they had crispy taco shells for sale, and they weren't too friendly about this request. They seemed agitated with my question about selling taco shells. When I asked how much, they replied "1.20$" and I said "for one taco? Like with meat? Because 1.20$ seems like a lot of money for one taco shell. That comes out to $14.40 without tax for a dozen taco shells. I quickly replied no thank you and found RoHo, which has delicious homemade taco shells at a fraction of the cost and friendly folks. I have been wanting to go to Carmelita's Restaurant on Broadway for years, and finally made it in today. I ordered a Chalupa compuesta and I was charged .50 for the beans! And, I was also charged for the guacamole (which I expected) $1.50 for a runny tablespoon full! Sour cream, charged $1.00! I was shocked! I got one cheese enchilada a la carte and that was $2.69, again...shocked. Me and my husband were disappointed with the food, in general, it had 0 flavor, I had to load up the salt, pepper and hot sauce (which had no flavor). The tortillas are made onsite which makes the tacos great. The owner knows us so she packs them extra special for the ride home. I think I got overcharged here. I got the 2 beef chalupa lunch special as take out and it came out to $9.60 something. Pretty sure the menu said $6.99. It was busy and the cashier was speaking spanish and rushing people along. My fault for not asking her about it. That being said it was ok I guess. Comes with refried beans, 2 flour tortillas and a thimble of green sauce. The green sauce was flavorful and spicy, but I really didn't get enough. The chalupas were a thin corn round topped with beef, tomatoes, 6lbs of lettuce and some tomato. Vegetables were fresh and the beef was seasoned ok, but I was underwhelmed for $9+. I don't know if I will be back but now I know to at least doublecheck my bill and ask for more green sauce. read more

I tried calling in a breakfast order for my job in food delivery this morning, and was rudely cut off by an older woman on the phone. She was very harsh and said I had to walk in to place my order, even though I'm asked to through my employer. I Arrived and the waitresses was very kind/ helpful and courteous. The older woman at the register, turns out was who I spoke to, and again the attitude.
