I've been to Carney's several times, most recently today! They have a really cool promotion for the new Minions movie decorating the iconic train car open since 1975! I had to pop by for the cuteness and good eats Carney's is right along the Sunset Strip and has it's own small, free parking lot ~ a total win. They have seats inside the train car but also a few picnic tables outside for dining, as well. The staff here is superb. So friendly and efficient, the way they get through the always long line and just move so fast is a master class on service. Chili is one of their signature items here which you can get alone, on the burger, on the hot dog, even on the fries! And goodness do they give you a heaping portion. Now I don't love chili so I'm always on their other items. They do patty style burgers which I like and also great hot dogs. They serve them in the softest non-poppy seed bun ever and are enjoyable. I like their cheese fries, too, though I can never finish them. The chocolate chip cookies are $2.50 and so soft & gooey just the way I like them. This is one of my favorite chocolate chip cookies in the Los Angeles. Jonathan Gold named Carney's one of his 99 Essential LA Restaurants. I concur.
Confession: I'm a huge fan of Illuminations' Minion franchise + I'm a sucker for experiential pop-ups. So we decided to indulge in some greasy burgers, fries, and chili dogs at Carney's on Sunset. We arrived close to opening time and avoided the crazy lunch rush. Ordering was pretty simple, but somehow things got a bit screwy. Must've been some Minions in the kitchen to blame for the order shenanigans. Our food came out separately so the three of us didn't get to eat at the same time. Also, our order wasn't quite right so they had to remake it. Despite the food snafu, the turkey Carney's chili dog was tasty. However, I'm not so sure it was turkey per my order. The dog could've had more onions on top and the tomatoes would've been better diced, but it's classic Carney's food so we went with it. My kiddo loved his cheeseburger and the fries were OK. I used to work just up the street from Carney's and it was our go-to lunch stop before payday when our budget was tight. Back before Covid, it was a decent lunch for under $10. It's still pretty OK priced for the times and the food is filling--with or without the Minions for the backdrop. I remember the sticky tables even back then. Well, some things never change. The menu featured their standard Chocolate-dipped BANANA for the Minions. However, it would've been nice to see a more customized menu and some of the thematic decor on the inside. I guess I'll just settle for the mixup in our order as part of our special experience.
We went for the minions experience and had a great lunch. Classic chili dog with onions and chili fries. Everything made to order and ready quickly. Portion of chili was generous. Everything was delicious! We sat inside and enjoyed the photos on the wall and the diner type experience. We found street parking but they have their own private lot, which is a plus for the location.
Lunch in a train car!!! First time going to Carney's, but not the last time. There are a good number of tables, even if it is packed, it seems like tables open up all of the time. And with a great, elevated view of Sunset. There is parking, some of the spots are a bit tight, but there are a good amount of spots. There is a lot of history on the walls, definitely a classic restaurant. And restrooms you do not need a code for. If the door is locked, someone is in there. The restaurant is clean and full of character. The menu is small, but well thought out with dogs and sausages, as well as burgers, salads and wraps. I have been wanting a thick burger for a while, everything seems to be a smash burgers right now.... This hit the spot. Thick and juicy quality meat and not over cooked. I got the half pound burger, med rare. With a New York style turkey dog for my partner. Split the train wreck fires and we were stuffed. The burger was well cooked, not dry at all. Very substantial. The turkey dog does take a bit longer to cook, but was told that it was worth it. It was cooked well and was full of flavor. The fries are really good and are very messy, better than the competitions
Iconic stop on the Sunset strip where you literally eat in a railroad train car! The service is quick and efficient, they've had their system down since 1975. You feel like you've traveled back in time and order from a traditional kitchen window. The chili was delicious and there were options like turkey dogs, and half n half fries when you just can't decide what to choose. A fun lunch for a Hollywood day, I highly recommend hanging out and enjoying a piece of LA history. Not to mention there is parking... unheard of in the city!
Ya gotta love Carney's. Ya just gotta. A train car loitering on a curve of the Sunset Strip, dishing up Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries like heart disease is still undiscovered. The harshness of the fluorescent lights against the white walls, the aromatic steam rising up from the grill packed with burgers and chicken and onions, the cashier who sends soda cup lids gliding through the air from one hand to his other like a Frisbee hanging on the breeze. It's the epitome of L.A. fast food heaven, with a broader, more varied menu than the other similar places around town, and I've always liked it more than Tommy's. At first glance, the thin burger patties and chili seem interchangeable with that other venerable burger stop, but I think the quality is better at Carney's. Yes, the meat tastes better. The chili also appears very similar, but is actually not as greasy (aka easier on the tummy). Fries are definitely better: thin shoestrings cooked to order and served hot out of the fryer naked, letting you add as much or as little salt as you like. Though I also like chili fries, I order my chili on the side, so it's a neater, one dip at a time affair, which also keeps the fries crispier for longer. Tonight, as always, I ordered a Cheeseburger with just Chili. My wife, however, orders hers exactly as advertised, with chili, mustard, tomato and pickles. Both were hot off the grill, tasty and satisfying. Our order of fries was, indeed, quite crispy and piping hot, our side of chili at the ready for dipping. I also like to grab a few banana peppers, bite off the ends, and sprinkle the juice onto the burger for a little extra heat. Try it next time! And so, it was a good, old-fashioned L.A. dinner for a Thursday night, filled with flavor and classic comfort. Whether on the Strip or on Ventura Blvd., you can't go wrong when you stop for a meal at the train.
I knew I would be in West Hollywood and was researching places that seemed like a good meal. I came across Carneys, serving burgers and hotdogs, but the Chili and the ambiance, décor of the restaurant being a train car is what sucked me in. I ordered a chili cheese burger and chili cheese fries. Chili Cheese burger consisted of a lightly toasted bun, patty with cheese, topped with chili, pickles, onion. Solid burger. Chili Cheese Fries: fries were the cut similar to McDonalds, not too thin, not too thick, fried to a golden brown, not soggy, topped with chili and cheese. The Chili is the star. Nice and thick. Not runny. Full of flavor. Great meal. Ordering was easy, very great service
The place sucks. I was getting my kids out of my car gonna go in to order and got threatened with getting my car towed for taking a minute to get my kids out the car I pulled in went inside to see the menu and went back out to grab my kids n as im walking up to go back inside im told their gonna tow my car Still ordered cuss the kids n food. Cashier was pretty rude. The cooks were nice tho. Food was decent for LA n expensive.. minions set up was cute!! My kids did really love the displays
Honestly, this Carney's is a time capsule. I feel as if nothing has changed. I live closer to the Studio City location, but decided to come to Sunset. Loved the creaking wooden floor board, train car atmosphere, unchanged menu, friendly staff, cool floating lid flip, etc. I came for a Double Cheeseburger, which did not disappoint. So good. No ketchup. If you add ketchup to a burger, you obviously don't like burgers. I also ordered a Chicken Pasta Salad, because that was my to go order in the past. It tasted the same, just not nostalgic the same. High expectations, I suppose. All in all, wonderful restaurant.
My family and I have been going to Carneys for as long as I can remember. I haven't been in almost a year and it's just as good as it was before. I always go with the same thing. A cheese burger and chili cheese fries. For your chili cheese fries ask for the shredded cheddar cheese. Parking is super easy and sitting in the train is so nostalgic. Service is fast and easy. I love this place. You really can't do wrong with anything.
We are always down for a good smash burger and this one here is definitely a top contender! The restaurant is a literal train. Inside was clean and service was quick. They are most famous for their chili cheeseburger and chilli cheese fries, which is what my husband ordered. I opt to go just a little lighter with a regular cheese burger and a side of fries. Everything is made to order and super hot and fresh. It's what a burger should be! On the side they have those little pepperoncinis and it's always a perfect pairing. They were more than generous with the chili on the fries, enough so that I was able to get a taste and some. This is easily a spot that I would add on my go to places when in the area.
I found out this place had a minion theme but by the time we got there it was all taken down so I was most excited about that! But this place is such a cute spot to go to! It's literally a train cart, I am kinda scared of heights so you are a little up in the air lol. They were quick to take my order and I felt like they already know what you want, the guy was writing down everything as soon as I was talking. I was also wondering if they have combos I didn't see it but if someone could help me out thanks! I had to order my veggie burger "soy based patty" and then a side of fries and a drink separately I believe. My burger was super delicious if actually tasted like a grilled burger, the fries were crispy and delicious! If you guys are looking for a good burger this is the space to chill and just eat!
Carney's isn't 5 stars for gourmet food. It's 5 stars because, for its own category, it has definitely earned its place in the "after-show, middle-of-the-night" hall of fame of greasy food! An iconic train/food truck that has been a West Hollywood fixture for 51 years. My friend had just traveled across the world, was completely jet-lagged, and was intrigued by the place. His burger, chili fries, and beer fully hit the spot! And the ambiance? An old train car, late at night in West Hollywood, people coming and going -- quirky, nostalgic, and so very LA. It's all part of the experience! I was perfectly happy observing the whole thing ;-) Friendly staff; they know what they're doing, and it was fascinating to watch such a smooth operation in action. Sometimes, 5 stars are simply about a place being exactly what it's supposed to be -- and Carney's is! read more
I have alwayyyssss wanted to come to this establishment for years. Like YEARS. I would always drive by. I never actually stopped by to eat here until now. The minions and monsters set up is what finally made me pop the cherry with Carney's. I brought my minions (friends) and minion (plushie) with me to enjoy the experience. The restaurant is in an old train car, with the restaurant being inside. You have to take some stairs up and wait in like to order. There is both indoor seating or outdoor seating on ground level. Service is pretty speedy! I ordered a simple cheeseburger and stole some fries off my friends. Of course can't forget the chillis!! I thought the cheeseburger wasn't half bad, it's a solid serving size. A burger is a burger to me. The meat was good, veggies felt fresh and like I mentioned I ate chillis in between to burn my mouth off. Standard service, not overly welcoming or anything. Fast & efficient workers. Restrooms are single use for men & women stalls on the train car level. Men's restroom is ironically larger. Parking on the street with meters or there's a parking lot where you can park & pay as well. Also nothing is or at least seems to be ADA friendly about this restaurant ..as a forewarning. read more

Haven't been to Carneys since I was a little girl. I was feeling nostalgic and stopped by for a cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. Taste just how I remember with a slightly smaller burger patty. Service was A-1 and my food was ready quickly. Best of all parking was a breeze. Love that it's still a train car. read more
After realizing the Saddle Ranch wasn't open yet, I decided to stop here for a quick lunch. I'm glad I did! The hot dog and chili fries were delicious. I've heard of this place before, but I never had a chance to stop in. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to help me. Excellent service!! Ahh this place I think catches the attention of anyone that passes by. It has such a cute and instagramable entrance. All the minions monsters and train stop set up is so creative and I feel it makes whatever you eat here taste better. In terms of food they have a menu you can find anywhere really. The food is good, I would say you come here more for the experience of eating inside an animated train. I love how the eyes outside move every once in a while. I give it to them for the great set up. they went all out! read more

Visited Hollywood and had to stop by the iconic Carney's. Awesome place... Ordered the chili fries and a double cheeseburger. I'd put their chili fries up against any other and they would win! Menu is simple but they do it well. Overall great place from the food to the rich history and atmosphere. read more

It's so good! Definitely better than In N' Out. The train wreck fries is a must try! I like everything they added chili to as well. It's kinda a small place though and on summer it gets really busy with tourists. read more
I've been coming to Carney's on Sunset for about 12 years now. Before that, it was one of those spots you always drive by, think about stopping, and never do--until the day you finally do, and then you just keep coming back. This place is all about classic, no-frills comfort: warm chili burgers and hot dogs that hit the spot every single time. They may not be "good" for you, but they're always good--and there are never any surprises. I haven't seen the owner around lately, but he used to walk through with a smile, checking in on people, and that kind of summed up the vibe here--welcoming and unpretentious. It can get pretty busy, a little cramped, and definitely loud inside, but that's part of the charm of eating in an old train car. Cell service can be spotty (again, train car), but there's outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the LA chaos and watch traffic roll by. Carney's is just one of those LA staples that never lets you down. read more

I've passed this place several times over the years, always meaning to stop in for a meal and this time my daughter and I were focused on going to a few businesses in this area and I made sure Carney's was part of it. The iconic bright yellow train cars at a bend on the Sunset Strip in WEHO are easy to spot. The entrance is a the end of a train car and the inside is an actual train car with ordering, the cooking and seating in the main car. Very different sort of setup here. The line was short and our servers were nice. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time as well. We shared a chili dog & fries. I loved the food for the simplicity of a good chili dog and ate all of it. This place is iconic and has good food. I will return here one day to try the burgers and perhaps another chili dog! read more
This is such a fun and affordable burger stop. It's super fun being inside a choo-choo train car. The vibe is good. The cooks are energetic. They have fun names for everything. They had a delicious vegan burger and the prices are great and their fries. Oh my goodness, large size, please! I went to Carney's on Sunset yesterday. I had a regular tuna melt, chili cheese fries, and a root beer. The tuna melt came in a hamburger bun, but I thought sourdough toast would have been better. Also, the tuna didn't sit well in the bun. The chili cheese fries had a bit of a spicy flavor and I noticed a lack of fries for the amount of chili served. The root beer was refreshing. I love the location for the restaurant. I love the idea of dining in a railcar. read more

If you're cruising down Sunset Blvd. and looking for something fast, fun, and full of flavor, Carney's is a must. Built inside a vintage yellow train car parked right along the boulevard, this spot has been serving up some great food since 1975. It's got that nostalgic feel, and once you step inside, you're hit with the old-school energy. Today I ordered their Carney's Original Chili Dog and a Double Cheeseburger. The chili dog was one of the best I've ever had. The hotdog had that perfect snap when you bite into it, juicy and smoky, with a ton of their house-made chili. Super rich, hearty, and seasoned just right. They top it with chopped onions, mustard, and two thick fresh-cut tomato slices, making it messy, bold, and packed with flavor. The Double Cheeseburger had two beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, pickles, tomato, and mayo all stacked on a soft bun. It's a classic diner-style burger, not over the top, but definitely enjoyable. Whether you're a local grabbing a quick bite or a tourist checking out the Hollywood sights, this place has something cool that feels like a little escape from the city buzz. read more

Amazing 5/5 stars. Best chocolate chip cookies ever. The sweet potato fries were amazing and the train-wreck fries were so so good. I got a lettuce wrap burger with a hot dog in it, I mean I was living my junk food dream (I was training for a pageant for 6 weeks and burgers were all I could think about). Open late! What I Ordered: -Chili Cheese Dog $6.90 -Chili Cheeseburger $7.55 -Train Wreck Fries $5.35 I made a long overdue trip to Carney's. Carney's is talked about as one of the best Chili Cheese Dogs in LA. I knew I had to see for myself. Regarding being the best Chili Cheese Dog in LA, I'm not sure the one I had deserves the title. It was pretty good. The dog had a decent snap to it. I will say for the price and the sheer size of the chili cheese dog. It is a very affordable deal. It comes with a hefty portion of chili on the dog. It comes with two slices of fresh and juicy tomatoes. The chili is a very wet chili. It has a decent spice to it, but it is not spicy by any means. It wasn't the best chili cheese dog that I've had. That title belongs to Chroni's. Carney's offers a bigger-sized chili dog for a more affordable price. Not to mention, you get to eat inside a train car on Sunset Blvd. The location is really unbeatable. The rock n roll music playing is a bit loud. If you are hard of hearing, it may be difficult to hear. Keep that in mind when taking a kid here. The chili cheeseburger was pretty good. It was pretty solid. The Train Wreck Fries is basically a carbon copy of Animal Style fries from In n' Out. The fries alone were too crunchy and didn't taste very good on their own. When you add the cheese, onions, and Thousand Island dressing. The fries are much more edible. Carney's is another one of those nostalgic places you grow up going to with your family. It's Carney's Burgers, not mine ( I wish ! )- but yes, would comp any friend to a terrific burger at the place. Wouldn't think twice. What's not to love- the Train, the service, The Sunset Strip but number one- The Food !

We steam our hotdogs and grill our Polish dogs and turkey dogs but you could have any of them grilled and any of them steamed. Any way you want them!
