When I saw one of my favorite restaurants on 3rd street, COD, had closed it made me think about what restaurants in the area I wanted to shine a light on. One of them was this one, to tell everyone that the food is really bad and not to come here. There are many delicious resturants to support on 3rd street instead. When I ate it, it was terribly greasy and unhealthy, the word that comes to mind is "burgerslop." Well, this was a real letdown. After weeks of trying (and failing) to check out this burger place (I'll get to why in a moment), I finally had a chance, and found their burgers lacking. I had the cheese burger (from the menu: "100% Organic, Grass-Fed & Grass-Finished, Pasture-Raised, Regenerative Beef With Real American Cheese, Organic Lettuce, Organic Dill Pickles, Grilled Onions, And Our House-Made PnP Sauce On A Glyphosate-Free, Seed Oil-Free Potato Bun.") but made it a double. It didn't help. Instead of tasting like a burger, it tasted more like a grilled cheese with some beef in it. And not a particularly good one. It just wasn't beefy enough. And this was, as I said, a double. As in two patties. I can't imagine what a single would've been like. It was also super greasy. Like weirdly so. good thing they gave me plenty of napkins, and they were the big kind. I'd hate to think how much worse this would've been had they been small or had I only been given a couple. I also had the fries ("Seed Oil-Free Fries Cooked In Preservative-Free Beef Tallow."), but they were good and not at all greasy or oily. They also gave me a decent amount of them, which didn't make up for the burger, but it didn't hurt either. As for the place itself, it was very clean, and had a bunch of tables inside. The staff was also nice, and the food came out nice and hot. But then there's the other issue; the one I alluded to earlier: Parking. Parking was super difficult. While there's a small lot behind the place, it's always packed. You also can't park on any of the side streets. Which means you have to find a metered spot on 3rd. Good luck with that. The food is getting bland and the overall experience has gone downhill. Cheap frozen fries are still cheap frozen fries even cooked in tallow. Previously, there was at least someone behind the counter who made the experience feel human. Friendly guy, explained the menu, made suggestions, and even upsold items. That felt like service. The next time, there was no one behind the counter at all. Just a hole in the wall where your bag pops out. You order yourself on a screen. You pick up the bag with your name on it and go. There is no greeting, no help, no interaction, and no service. On the most recent (and final) visit, the only visible employee leaned against the wall scrolling on their phone while customers do the work. What I didn't realize when ordering the fries is that you have to pay an upcharge if you actually want the hand-cut fries, bringing the total to $11.25 for fries alone. Honestly, you're better off walking 5-10 minutes to Win-Dow at The Grove and getting a much better burger for less money. The place was completely empty at noon on a Saturday. I was greeted when I walked in, but from there the experience kind of went downhill. I waited about 10 minutes for the food, which was totally fine. I don't mind waiting if the food is worth it. Unfortunately, the burger itself barely tasted like anything. It lacked seasoning and the only real flavor came from the PNP sauce. It's also very small for $8. The fries arrived lukewarm even though I was dining in. They put everything in a to-go bag, which made me feel like they just assumed I wasn't eating there. Apparently they grate cold cheese on top of the fries, which probably would've been great if the fries underneath were actually hot. Maybe. I politely brought the fries back and asked if they could remake them hot. Mind you, I was literally the only customer in the restaurant at the time, aside from what I assume were Uber Eats orders. They brought them back out absolutely destroyed -- hard, overcooked, snapping like matchsticks, completely inedible. I do love a good smash burger, so I'm always happy to try the newest on the block! But that just means there's plenty of competition to compare it to. Palms n Patties is trying to stand out with two main factors: organic grass fed beef cooked without seed oils, and their bun which is grilled and flipped. In my experience many restaurants are using organic beef and no seed oils without making it their entire personality. And the flipped bun had little to no impact on the burger experience. I find the anti seed oils trend very interesting, especially when a place like Palms n Patties is trying to be the healthiest burger in LA. Yes, it's a mildly "healthier" fat, but I still found the burger to be greasier than necessary. I opted to try the regular fries, although there is an option to pay an upcharge for "hand cut fries". The table next to us got those and it's the same small portion size but for a whopping $8. I found the fries suffered texturally and all that was going for them was the beef tallow flavor. I enjoyed the taste of the burger and the crispy edges, but it didn't particularly stand out above any of the others. The burger wasn't bad, don't get me wrong. The meat was juicy and had a good outer crisp, the house sauce was decent, and the inverted grilled bun was a fun twist on a usual burger. But it was nothing special, and didn't wow me in the way other LA smash burgers have. It's also on the smaller side. The fries were really what disappointed me. $5.77 for a small side of fries is kind of crazy, especially considering they tasted like they went straight from a freezer bag to the fryer. And offering "organic fresh hand cut fries" as a more expensive option essentially confirms that the regular fries are not fresh or hand cut. I could tell. As a member of this neighborhood I don't expect this place to last. First off, the service is non-existent. They've got one staff member scrolling reels while you order who clearly doesn't give a fuck, then looks you dead in the eye when you go to leave a tip. Pressed no tip, btw. Let me start by saying I should be this restaurant's ideal customer. I care about ingredients. I know what regenerative agriculture is. I'll happily pay extra for beef tallow over seed oils. The whole clean, seed-oil-free pitch this place is built on? I'm already sold on it. That's exactly why I'm writing this review. The concept is good. The execution is a disaster. The Experience Walking in, the first thing you notice is the heat. It has to be close to a hundred degrees inside, humid and musty, like the kitchen is venting directly into the dining area. The space is plain white walls with zero decor. No warmth, no design, nothing. There's a small menu on the wall and a hole cut out where you can see into the kitchen, which is where your bag eventually pops out. There was no greeting when I walked in. None. When I asked the person at the counter how their day was going, they seemed genuinely surprised anyone would ask. I've heard that a lot of the time there aren't even employees out front and you're just expected to order on an iPad. On my visit the touchscreen was down, so a human had to take my order, and it felt like that was an inconvenience for everyone. The whole thing feels like a ghost kitchen pretending to be a retail storefront. It's dead quiet in a way that makes you feel like you shouldn't be there. Very strange environment, and not in a charming way. The Menu The menu is covered in buzzwords. Every ingredient is labeled regenerative or organic. I don't have a problem with those words in principle. My problem is that none of it shows up in the actual food, which I'll get to. The pricing is all over the place. The burger is $7.77, unless you want the sourdough bun, which somehow makes it $13. A second patty is $5.77. A third patty is another $7.77. Fries are ten dollars, and from what I've heard, they're frozen fries cooked in tallow. Ten dollars for frozen fries. The Burger This is the part that really gets me. The entire identity of this place is health. Clean fats, real ingredients, all of it. And the burger I got was the greasiest burger I have ever eaten anywhere. Not juicy. Dripping wet. Everything mushes together into one warm, soggy, greasy mess. No crunch, no fresh vegetables, maybe a single pickle. And the buns are loaded with butter, I assume to compensate for the fact that nothing has much flavor on its own. I've eaten In-N-Out and felt cleaner afterward. I've eaten McDonald's and felt cleaner afterward. Honestly, the closest comparison is Jack in the Box, except this is greasier, wetter, and more expensive. You do not walk away feeling like you ate something healthy. You feel heavy and kind of gross. The Cheese Situation Here's the part that makes me question the whole brand. For a restaurant built entirely around avoiding seed oils, the burger comes with American cheese by default, and you can pay an extra $1.77 to upgrade to "seed-oil-free cheddar." Think about that. If the upgrade is the seed-oil-free option, what's in the default cheese? I'm not stating it as fact, but if avoiding seed oils is the reason you're eating here, I'd read the menu very carefully before assuming everything on it actually is. The Verdict I've given this place three chances. Same hot, empty room every time. Same disappointing food. Their social media is genuinely good, with lots of creators hyping it up and making it look like the spot to be. The gap between the content and the actual experience is enormous. If you're in the area and want a burger that's actually fresh and reasonably priced, The Window at The Grove is a five to ten minute walk away and a much better value. I attended the grand opening and it was excellent and the owner and team were great. So, when I had an Ubereats bogo / discount promo I suggested my neighbor try it too. We walked over and I put our order in and the owner was already sporting attitude, asking why we weren't just ordering there and if we had app credits or whatever. We said no pickles (both orders have to be the same which I hate about using bogo deals) and I wondered if I could have mine on the side if possible and asked, and he honestly could not understand what I meant. It was like he was tired or stoned. After repeating she can't eat pickles and I'd like to have mine on the side instead of No pickles about three times, he said that using the delivery apps is confusing and gave me more attitude about it. Back to the self-service kiosk, we specifically came to this place (again, not a restaurant) because of the InKind app which claimed Palms n' Patties was part of part of their dining program. But when it was time to pay, it was clearly not part of the InKind app. In fact, the employees didn't even know how or if it worked. Turns out, there was another customer there who wanted to pay with her InKind app as well, but couldn't. InKind needs to drop this place from their app. Oh, I almost forgot, the ambience of this place like a hospital morgue. Devoid of human life and emotion. They had three tables and a handful of stools in the window. One table was taken by an employee, the other by a couple and thankfully, the third was empty just for us. And of course, the stools were sad and empty. Why anyone would want to eat in this cold, sterile environment is beyond me. Maybe they do a brisk DoorDash business? (But not today.) In the less than 30 minutes we were there, not one other person came in... and it was lunchtime! On to the one positive about this place, the burgers are very good. We had previously, been to another location and the burgers were very good there too. Honestly, that's why we came here. That other location was lively with people excited to eat there but this 3rd Street location was sad and lonely and pathetic. So we ate quickly. Enjoyed our burgers. And whispered amongst ourselves about what an awful experience this place is. Today's generation of younger people want more than a good meal, they want a place they can return to again and again. This is not that place. When no one greets or acknowledges your presence or "thanks you" for coming or wishes you a good day when you leave, is not a place worth frequenting. About 4 months ago, I wrote a review based on a negative experience. Fortunately, I decided to give the restaurant another chance. On this particular evening,I had a very positive and pleasant experience. Palms n Patties serve up a solid smash burger and solid crispy fries at a reasonable price. I would definitely return. The highlight of the visit was the excellent service and attention I received from Chris. Chris was aware that my prior experience(based on our conversation) was not a positive one. He did a superb job of welcoming me and apologizing for the previous experience. Furthermore, his suggestion of adding a jalapeño to my burger took the taste level up a notch or two. Attention to detail and attention to the customer are always a winning combination. Palms n'Patties is immaculate which always makes dining in a nice option. Very clean establishment. Running a business is an incredibly challenging endeavor. Running a successful business is even more of a monumental challenge. I'm glad I gave Palms n' Patties a second chance.
