Just a short distance from Denver Airport you'll find Carniceria La Depensa Latina a grocery, butcher shop and restaurant. I'm a huge fan of menudo and base on recommendations from the Yelp Army, we stopped by for a great experience. The Carneceria was a impressive arrangement of Latino decor as well as friendly staff. I ventured over to their menu and was impressed at all the delicious options to have for either breakfast, lunch or dinner. We visited early Sunday for a chance to get menudo and also try their chiliquillies a delicacy of fried tortillas and eggs with salsa, beans and rice. Both dishes were serve hot and filled with incredible flavor. The menudo also came with the usual garnishes as well as hot tortillas. Both dishes were reasonably priced and great portions. Lost of patrons began visiting the store to grab produce as well as prepared meats to take home and either fry or grill. Store was very clean and service was very helpful. When we approached this establishment, Hubs asked me, "Are you sure you want to eat here?" I replied, "YES, don't worry.. we just go with the flow"... Right when we enter this establishment, actually, its a Hispanic aka Mexican grocery, bakery and restaurant all in 1... aka 3 in 1 "deal"... On the Right of the establishment at the FRONT, is the little bakery section aka pre-made PASTRIES. Along side with the Cold Section or Refrigerated Cakes and Pastries such as Flan, Cold Desserts etc etc. Beyond this section, you can find the Vegetable Section of this establishment. At the back will be the "dry" section of all the Mexican Dry Spices you can find. On the Left, you can find the cases of Meat on Display. There is a little section for fish and shrimp. But the bulk goes to the Meat, like Beef and Pork. On the Left FRONT Section of this establishment you can find the refrigerated items of Cold Drinks, Mexican Cheese and Sausages etc etc. In Between, there are aisle of Mexican Grocery, or Hispanic products you can find. What intrigue me was the FOOD that they sell at the "Back CENTER Section", a little food counter, that you can find in this establishment. You order at the counter, and seat yourself. The lovely staff who take your order, will then send the food. The food came out piping hot. Throughout the whole evening while we were there, seated waiting for our food to be ready, Hispanic/Mexican Music filled the air, through the stereo.. Hubs like his order of Carne Asada Tacos way better than his order of Carne Asada Smothered Burrito ($6.50). Reminds him of the establishment or eateries he had in MEXICO. By looking at the Smothered Burrito plate, the amount is reasonable as compared to the Smothered Burrito plate he had sometime one week ago a few miles away. As for me I prefer the Barbacoa Taco way better than the Carne Asada Tacos since when I want to order the Tripa or Lengua Taco, the lovely lady said they did not sell those that evening of Friday October 4th 2013. Maybe I should return or give them a call first to ask if they sell Lengua or Tripa Taco the next time we head to this establishment. Our Taco order comes with the Orange Chipotle Sauce which was flavorful but was NOT Spicy enough for our taste bud. All in all, a satisfied Dinner with 2 Bottled Beverages which was less than $20. Definitely returning when needed. 4 Stars for Tacos - Hubs rated it. 3 Stars for the Smothered Burritos. 3.5 Stars OVERALL for this establishment, with the reasonable cost of the food and the variety that La Despensa Latina has to offer. Great chorizo breakfast burrito, and cheap. As I waited for my burrito, I walked around the market. They have quite an extensive stock of Mexican hardgoods, a decent supply of produce, and a well-stocked butcher section. I will say that as I walked the store, I was surprised how dirty it was..the floors were filthy. There was a stack of clearly rotting produce on one end of the produce section. While they have a great selection of groceries, I find it difficult to believe this place is inspected to the level of a normal chain grocery store in Denver. They over charge! They will charge for frying fish when ad says its free. The fish will be weighted and charged with ice on them and you don't see them being handed to fryer. If your not a man they will be rude. They make it noticeable too. They don't respect social distancing. Everything they sell can be bought at save a-lot at $2 less. This used to be my favorite place in the area back when I still had to walk everywhere and before they started building more places to eat. This is a small little Latina grocery/restaurant. There's 4 sit down booths and a kitchen where you can get pretty much anything you would find at most Mexican restaurants, but for much cheaper. There's the standard tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales and onto the plated meals like Chile relleno and mojarro frito(fried fish) and more. This little place has a massive selection at great prices. I've liked most of the dishes I've tried, and I've tried lots when I used to come here once a week. My go to is the tacos of course, even on days that aren't Tuesday. They have a selection of specialty meats that if you didn't grow up near the culture you might turn your nose up at like lengua and tripas(what I learned pork tripe is not beef tripe), but I do suggest you give it a try! There are weekly deals if you live in the area, it'll show up in your weekly ad mailer. The combo meals are a pretty good deal too. For about $24 I can get enough meat and salsa and tortillas to make 16 tacos and still have meat left over and have rice and beans! The grocery section also carries a nice selection of Latin foods, and they have their own Mexican bakery and other homemade snacks. I really liked this little Mexican store. The prices were cheap, especially for meat and the quality is amazing! I bought a lot of meat. The cashiers and workers were very helpful and friendly. The only problem I had was with the cashier that works in the little restaurant, she was rude and impatient. If you're ever in need of good quality meat, I would go here. If I could give 0 stars I would. It's obviously a family owned business so they need to work on there customer service. I called because I had an issue with my to go food and the guy called me a lier and decided to argue with me instead of looking for a resolution. Not the first unpleasant experience. As Amy C. said, this is a hole in the wall type restaurant combined with a small market which has wonderful Mexican pastries. I prefer these type of Mexican restaurants because they taste good and are cheap! Ordering is done at a counter and you sit down at the few booths they have; they serve you if you dine in. I ate the smothered burrito with barbacoa meat which was literally smothered with cheese; I wonder if I asked for it not to be smothered, whether the burrito would not have a heart attack's worth of cheese. Served with refried beans, rice, and the sides of lettuce, tomato, and sour cream, it still tasted great, especially if you are very hungry since the portions are large. At $6.50, this plate is quite the steal during dinner hours compared to other sit-down restaurants. My kids shared a steak and cheese quesadilla, and my mother dined on a platter of cheese enchiladas. If you dine in, you get a large bowl of tortilla chips, which I think they make there, and a bowl of spicy, hot salsa. I am not sure whether the chips and salsa come with a take-out order. Of course, I took home an amazing arrangement of pastries and some biscochitos...and promptly stuffed myself further as soon as I came home from dropping my mother at the airport. Delicious! If you have never had Mexican pastries, do not expect them to be as sugary sweet as American pastries; they are much in line with Asian pastries. They bake the pastries right in La Despensa Latina, so you know they are fresh; I witnessed four trays of sweet buns coming straight from the kitchen. If you are in search of a carneceria, La Despensa Latina offers this as well. The only con, as with many markets, Asian, Mexican, etc., is that there were a few pesky flies messing with our dinner which terrified my daughters. Honestly, do not let this deter you, at least from getting take-out. The flies do not get on the food and they are natural to the fact that the door opens and closes often from all the customers. I suppose the flies are just as attracted to the food as us since the bakery smells delicious. I assume that this is a problem only due to the summer heat and the impending rain of the day; in the winter, I doubt there are any flies. Another note - they have a $5.00 credit card minimum. La Despensa Latina place reminds me of the mercados in New Mexico and is well worth enjoying before or after the airport. read more

This is exactly the kind of Mexican I've been missing since moving from San Diego a few years ago. It would be affectionately known in SoCal as "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican - this place has combo plates and daily specials. I'm partial to the Bistek Ranchero. I think it's awesome that they walk over to the butcher side of the small shop to get the meat they will use on your meal. This is your basic mercado with Mexican brands and foods. Carne asada plate was ok. Had high expectations because of the location, the most authentic food places are always a hole in the wall. While the portions were decent, I have had better carne asada. It was a little tough but good marinade. The guacamole I bought from the store attached was amazing! Full of flavor and a little bit spicy. That alone will make me go to the store again. Found this place as soon as I moved from Cali to the denver area. This is now my 4th time here and I think it's safe to say this little gem of place offers quality for sure over the other locals stores in the area. Not only do they have fresh produce and meats they also have an amazing little food stand area inside the restaurant which is pretty much 100% authentic Mexican! Cashiers and ladies that work the restaurant have nasty attitudes! Went back again today to give it another shot but same thing as last time. So this place is in a store. I ordered food from the restaurant part. And paid at the front with a cashier. When food was ready they called me up, food was on a hot plate. I ordered the carnitas plate (BTW). They have about 6 tables to eat at. The carnitas was good, but the rice and beans served with it weren't that hot, they were on the cool side. All food tasted really good and the tortillas were very hot and steamy to put the food on. I had enough for leftovers that they were happy to give me a Togo box for... if beans and rice were hot this would have been a 5 star read more
