My wife and I decided to take the easy way out instead of cooking dinner at home, so I picked up some food from Carrillo's Mexican Deli on Sherman Way in Winnetka, California. I went with my usual to start a grande with chicken and no tomatoes, since I have acid reflux and can't have tomatoes. I ordered the chicken tostada grande because, aside from the pico de gallo, there aren't supposed to be any other tomatoes in the meal. I also ordered some hard-shell chicken tacos for my wife over the phone and picked everything up on my way home from work. I always seem to get heartburn when I eat from here. I usually tell myself it's worth it and assume it's just because I'm eating more than I should but the food is just too good to stop. This time, though, I looked down at my tostada and noticed some red specks. When I took a closer look, I realized it was tomato mixed in with the chicken. Some restaurants cook their chicken with tomatoes, and that's a big problem for me. So I went back to the restaurant to ask for a refund since I can't have tomatoes in my food. When I got there, I asked if they put tomatoes in the chicken aside from the pico de gallo. At first, they said no, but then one of the employees checked with the cook, who confirmed that they do cook the chicken with tomatoes. I explained that I have acid reflux and can't have tomatoes at all otherwise, I end up coughing all night and my sleep is completely ruined. They weren't hesitant to give me a refund once they realized the mistake. They also suggested that next time I order, I should clearly mention that I can't have any tomatoes so they can make sure my food is prepared accordingly. I agreed and said I'd do that. Unfortunately, these days you can't always assume something is tomato-free just because it's not listed on the menu. At most places I go, even if tomatoes aren't mentioned, I still have to ask just to be sure. Carrillo's is still an excellent choice if you're looking for wholesome Mexican food. But for anyone with dietary restrictions, you really need to double check seriously double check that your order doesn't include anything you can't eat. I would still recommend this place if you're in the area. The restaurant is what you would expect for the ambience. It is well decorated and inspired by the Mexican culture. The parking lot is something else it has limited parking, but I'm usually able to find something there when I get there as it shares a parking lot with other stores . Hopped in for a quick lunch here on my way back from the Reagan library. It's in a busy shopping plaza in simi valley. You order at the counter and if you are eating there, you take a seat in the dining room and they bring the food to you. Honestly. I haven't eaten here in a long time but I do buy my masa here for tamales and it never disappoints.

I stopped by and purchased a Red Chile Colorado Beef and bean burrito only. I received a Red Chile Pork with rice only. When I called to complain about the error they did, I was asked to go back and return the burrito. I was told that they are only taking me as a courtesy. In addition, I was told that all burritos come with rice and beans. I mentioned that I understand that and that I made it clear what I wanted. To finish things, I was told that they don't do their burritos like the customer wants. They do them as they are per order. I then asked for a refund and was told that they had already closed all the transactions. Violet told me that I would have to return tomorrow and see if the manager would even give me a refund. The pozole smelled foul- way too meaty and actually had very little meat and a ton of hominy. Carillos will always hold a special place in my heart as it is super nostalgic for me. I've been coming here for at least 20 years. Their menu has changed over the years and they have added so many items. They have family pack specials as well if you want to use them for a party. My go to item is their hard shell chicken tacos. They hit the spot every single times. They also have a great shrimp cocktail for $16.95 and it's huge!! I got the chile relleno, I was not impressed. I actually think they didn't cook the chile fully, it's was really tuff and had to get a steak nice to even cook through. The cheese enchiladas were made with their homemade tortillas. Which in my opinion, are way too thick. The flavor was good with both items, they just need to be better at the cooking process. So disappointed in this spot. We are having a small Christmas this year because- Covid. So since I didn't make tamales due to our house being just 3 people, we decided to order from carrillos. My mom called last week to confirm they were still taking orders. They said yes, up until Wednesday and they quoted her $32/dozen. So she ordered ahead for a 1pm pick up for today (Christmas Eve/Mexican Christmas). I showed up to pick up the order and they tell me that they don't have part of my order anymore: (6cheese tamales). I was confused because we ordered ahead to pick up at 1pm today. The girl went to the back and they somehow scraped up 6 cheese tamales that were cold, I was fine with it as I can warm them here at home. I ended up also ordering a lb of carnitas and a dozen corn tamales to add to our Christmas Eve menu. Welp, they charged me $36/dozen for tamales, not $32 as quoted, and they charged my for Carnitas that WERE NOT PUT IN MY BAG. So there's our Christmas dinner. Super disappointed in this whole visit. Our bill came to close to $90 for everything. This is insane. I ordered 2 tamales with sauce and cheese (enchilada style), a shrimp taco, and the George Lopez Supreme Burrito with carne asada. The pork tamale was delicious and fresh, the meat was so tender. The shrimp taco was so big and full of fresh tomatoes and perfectly seasoned shrimp. I usually order about $30 worth of food at a place and end up with one meal!! This order will probably end up being 4 meals!! Found my new go to here for sure!! Not only is it a dozen tamales for $34, while a single tamale is 2.50.... but after ordering 18 tamales (for $35), half were cold, and 3 of them were 100% rock solid frozen. Frozen with a side of frost, because you can clearly see actual freezer burn snow on them. The only reason this place was an option was because Tamales House was closed. read more
