Seemed to be a good array of products here for every animal in your life. I dislike that there are no prices on anything. So annoying to have to keep asking how much something is or tote it up to the counter. To add to that, prices are a little haphazard. I got chicken feed and a container which were normal priced and $2 too high respectively. But I looked at some horse products that were 2 x what they should be! So just know prices for what you want to get going into the place so you don't end up broke. Gentleman that carries out the grain was super nice and helpful. Also they were having a shot clinic in the parking lot when I was there. My dog needed some boosters so we joined the queue. It was a little chaotic and warm in the sun but the girls were nice and the price was right. They do it twice a month. Recommend! read more

I'm probably not a typical Carter's customer but we were thankful they were able to help us with our unconventional needs. We were looking to acquire bales of hay to use at our daughter's cowgirl themed 6th birthday party and Carter's was the nearest supplier that we could buy from. The cost per item was $12.95 and for us, it was well worth the price. I would have happily paid for them to deliver but unfortunately, they do not offer this service so we had to pick them up ourselves. Thankfully they load these into your vehicle because these beasts are heavy...and HUGE! We purchased 4 and it filled the bed of our friends large RAM truck completely and if we had gotten 6 like we had planned, we would've had to make several trips. Purchase and pick up were a breeze. To go with the rustic cowgirl theme, I used the the straw as a benches for the kids table and for the photo backdrop. The kids loved it and it made everything come together nicely. We hired two ponies to come out and do rides for the kids and I had hoped he would have some use for these but unfortunately, because they were straw, he couldn't feed to his ponies or use elsewhere. We didn't know what to do with these large things after the party so luckily, Carter's was happy to take these back. We dropped them off the day after the party and thankfully, drop off was easier than purchase. We were thrilled because these can get pretty messy so it's a clean freaks worst nightmare. I know its outside but my garden is as tidy as my home. lol While I don't typically use Carter's for party decor, I can totally see using them in the future. We do annual Christmas parties and I've always wanted to bring in snow for one...these bales of hay could contain the snow. Hahaha. the wheels are turning....it's likely we'll be back. = ) read more

Carter's, affectionately known as "The Big Red Barn" has been around for quite some time. It stands alone along a busy road so it's not hard to miss. However, if you don't really know what they offer, you'll pass them by unassuming that they have such a great opportunity. I was at another retail shop gathering food for our new guinea pigs when another customer mentioned I could get the same stuff for a whole lot less at Carter's. So I put the goods back on the shelf and headed over to the big red barn. I pulled in and entered the only door that didn't have a sign that said "Employees only". Once inside, I saw pretty typical shelves of animal food and supplies. As I approached the counter, a couple of ladies were in the middle of a conversation and the big 'ol cat was lying on the counter next to the register! Very friendly cat and had no worries in the world. Just layed there, resting waiting to be pet! The woman behind the counter greeted me with a smile. I said I was told I could get some hay for my guinea pigs here. She said, of course. Rang me up for a flake of hay and handed me the receipt. She said, "Hand this to the guy out there and he'll take care of you". Works for me. Within minutes I had an outdoor trash bag full of hay for the same price that about a bread sized bag at the other store cost! What a deal! Yes, I'll be back when we use up this bag 'o hay! carters is the best!!! i have been getting hay for my rabbits here for the past 3 years. 1000 times better then pet smart. they give you a big bag of hay for half the price of a small bag from pet smart. My Aunt recommended Carters to me when I bought my mini pot belly pig! I can walk in and buy my mini pot belly pig pellets at a great price and they have a couple different options for "pig litter" at great prices too! I need to ask if they have rabies shots at their shot clinic for my little Hamilton? I am also hoping they carry worming meds for him! I really love Carter's Hay & Grain! I had a phenomenal experience with them in trying to figure out what dog food would be best for my woofer. One of their cashiers, Jackie- I think, was absolutely wonderful with trying to assist me! Her and another one of the ladies who works there were super helpful and super knowledgable about the different brands that they carry, price point, the size of the kibble even! and it was great because they were able to also tell me what they've used and loved- and what other customers definitely love! I was recommended by my husband's friend to check them out since I was trying to find a new dog food for our dog since he has been having some issues with the different foods we have been trying. His tummy hasn't been happy with most foods we have tried. Aside from the dog food, the ladies were super! I loved how friendly they were and how willing they were to help me find a new food. It was really cool to go to Carter's, they have pet goats, sheep, pigeons, guinea fowl, cats, and rabbits! That and they have a really active chicken business? Like, they carry baby chicks that people purchase, raise, and get to have fresh eggs! And I didn't even know this was a thing, but they also offer older chickens for sale! I was really impressed with Carters, they have a great staff and have some very knowledgable employees working for them. That, and when looking at the business from the outside- it seems super old, but they were pretty up to date with Disability accommodations, and their system was pretty cool! They have a system where they have the ability to email or text you your receipt when you make a purchase with them! And, I love this, they accept contactless payment! p.s. Jackie had some really cool hair and nails! I loved it and she was super cool about telling me who she goes to to have it all done for her! read more

I have two bunnies and Carter's is the place I go to get them flakes of Timothy or Three-way hay, as well as pine pellets for their litter box. The pricing is reasonable and much cheaper than any pet store! Plus the staff is always friendly and hard-working! They also have hay and feed for horses and baby chickens for sale! Love this place. They take care of big and little orders. They are always friendly and have chickens, cats, goats and more for the kids to see. Both my roommate and I, unknowingly, went there separate times in one day to get chicken feed and we both had bad customer service experience with two different workers there. I may not be an expert farmer but they gave no guidance or insight into feed types and advantages/disadvantages, despite our request. Plus the "organic" feed I bought isn't certified organic by the USDA. It's called "organic pride" and owned by purina. Some private company in Oregon certified it "organic" which means nothing. read more

I have dealt with them for years for chickens and feed.But they are going down hill. I bought to lay hen Aracaunas that died shortly after I got them and the vet said they were most likely sick when I bought them. the main reason I go to Marys Is I cannot stand to go into Carters because of over whelming smell of RAT URINE ...it's nauseating !!! read more

Hay bales for a fair price and lots of other useful items for the homestead. Hay was loaded for me in the back of my car and I was out in a pinch! I am a young person new to San Diego and urban farming, and I didn't feel at all intimidated or out of place like I sometimes do around people who are clearly knowledgeable about livestock. Worst customer service I have experienced. Will not return to the Olivenhain store. There were two employees chatting when I entered the store. I said hi and I was completely ignored, nor was I offered any help. I finally asked another employee for the items I was looking for and he said he would ask. I have been a customer here for many years as I have needed products from dog food to chicken feed. I have never had a bad experience and the staff has always been very pleasant and helpful to me. After being treated poorly by a competitor, I have a new appreciation for the customer service at Carter's Hay & Grain. I love this place! Great people who are friendly and knowledgable. I have tried other feed stores but this one has the best prices and is definitely the friendliest! My kids love to come here. Stopped in and picked up some Timothy hay for our horses as we were passing through on our way home from a little getaway. As always, the first thing we do is check with Christian to make sure of the quality. He said it was very good, so we loaded up. Our horses love the quality of the Timothy hay from Carter's and stop eating everything else when we give them a flake of this hay. read more

I have been using them for years. They sell dog food $20 cheaper than in Del Mar, Carmel Valley, San Diego. For example, Taste of the Wild, Salmon is $45!, so I drive up there and buy 5 at a time to pay for my gas. They have the cheapest and best quality substrate for mice and rats and snakes. I could go on and on. Endless supplies. Plus, it is always fun to go there and see the huge array of chickens, roosters, quail and goats/sheep. read more
