Farm, Homestead & pet people beware when you purchase your chicks from Hawthorne Country Store! They put tiny rubber hair bands on the chicks legs. We found 1 on one of chicks that was green, easily seen & immediately removed it before it cut off circulation and damaged the chick BUT...... there was a light purple band on another one that we didn't see! Now the chick needs medical attention, her foot will need to be removed for her to survive. This is a pet of ours, a silky chicken that has been put through so much already. We contacted Hawthornes and they said we could exchange the chick now 7 weeks old and attached to our family as we've been taking care of her round the clock. They say "they will take care of the chick as best they can if we exchange her" ..... BS, She will be euthanized. We've requested they have the rest of her foot taken care of by a vet and ensure she will be ok with just a peg leg on one side as a get her back to us as AGAIN, SHE'S OUR PET! They said no, exchange only. PROOF they will euthanize her. read more

I'm actually shocked to see that this store actually has good reviews!! I was mortified to see how they "care" for their chickens!On one of the hottest days, the outside chickens had no water. They had a bucket that makes it impossible for the chickens to access it. In addition, they're missing feathers from either stress, being picked on or diseased. Inside the store, they had dozens of chickens stuffed in a bin and some shelf thing where the chickens were stuffed in and could barely stand. I get that they're chickens, but no animal deserves that! It was heartbreaking! read more

Picked up three chicks today (two easter eggers and one olive egger) and the guy who helped me was awesome. Their selection was large so there were a lot to choose from. I had tons of probably stupid questions and he answered them all. I drove 2 hours round trip here because of how nice the employees were on the phone. I had called feed barns more local to me but they were either rude or unhelpful over the phone. Their prices were great and significantly cheaper than anyone near me. 10/10 experience highly recommend this place. I will definitely make the 2 hour round trip again for my chicken needs read more

I don't have a need to shop here often due to the fact that I don't own any animals and I live in a condo, don't have a yard and don't do any canning, but I still have a want to shop here and love this store! I wanted to get my husband a new pair of Carhartt jeans and he is a larger size which are hard to find in most stores. I wish I knew the name of the woman who helped me over the phone to special ordered them as she was amazing, super friendly and helpful. The jeans were a great price and took a little over a week to arrive. I took my husband with me to pick them up and they let him try them on (perfect fit) and everyone was super friendly. It is such a fun store to look around and is definitely a place to go if you have animals or need a unique gift. read more

Wow. Just wow. My mom has been thinking about having chickens in her yard as a hobby and so when I googled feed stores this place came up. I walked in and immediately saw what I was looking for not only do they have everything you could possibly want for chickens they had everything you could possibly want for any farm type domestic animal you could have. They had so many breeds of chicks and full size chickens to choose from and allllll of the supplies you could possibly want. This place is huge! This review is long over due. Hawthorne Country store is the best! They will special order anything for your furry or feathered or leather skinned friends. And then beat the price of the large chain stores. They have everything you need for a small urban garden to Large scale gardening. Ever wanted to start canning? Hawthorne has all that too! Tons of bird feeders with every different time of seed. Little and big dog high quality clothing.. fun sweaters for my Boston. I think he has at least 3 from here and they last for years. My boyfriend gets his birthday Pendleton flannel from here every year. Yes they are a Pendleton supplier!! Tons of shirts to choose from. Usually styles I have never seen before. Does your man need tough work pants they have all the Carhartt stuff too! I can't stop by with out visiting all the baby chicks, ducks, pigs and goats. They carry all the supplements for the health of your animals (the prices are always better then the large suppliers). I don't have horses any more, but I love the smell of all the horse tackle they have at Hawthorne. Nothing like the smell of a good saddle! They have cast iron pots for camp cooking, Pendleton blankets and towels, seeds, cages, funny cards, little gift treasures for friends and family. Country stores are few and far between these days. Hawthorne Country store is generations of great local family. They truly love what they do. It shows in the stores and their service. So, I was looking at some of the pictures, and I feel the need to address a few things. One: Hawthorns is a store, not a forever home. The turnover for farm animals is very high. As such, they enclosures they are temporarily housed in are just that, temporary. So complaining about them being small is silly. They will be gone in a week. Two: the picture where some baby chicks "had their feathers worn off due to overcrowding" is a picture of a naked neck chicken. It's neck is naked, because that's what it's markings are naturally. Don't believe me? Google naked neck chickens. It's a thing. I have been a regular customer of hawthorns for a couple decades now. Previously for cat food, and now for I all my chicken needs. I am so grateful for everyone who works there! I see them working constantly to keep up cleanliness and the health of the animals. The chickens I got from here are healthy and fed the best chicken feed I can find! Hawthorne's has been great to me. Everyone there is amazing. read more

I have been a patron of Hawthorne since 1992. They have friendly staff, a large variety of quality products, and great customer service. Always a pleasant experience! The changes brought on by health concerns have taken the shine off the experience, but I am so glad and thankful they have been open. The last several times I have been there, health compliance rules were well posted and everyone followed them. The staff on the inside has been great. I cannot say the same for the outside. On more than one occasion, I have had two 50 lbs. bags of feed thrown roughly into the rear cargo area of my car without respect to my property. I didn't chose to say anything about it because nothing was damaged. Today I was surprised to be treated so rudely on the outside. When I went to my car I removed my mask. When the feed was brought to the car I walked around the passenger side to show my receipt as always. Before reaching my car, the man abruptly and harshly said "You don't have on your mask. Please keep 6 feet of distance between us." I was taken aback. I felt a sense of disappointment to be approached in such an unfriendly and rather rude manner. Certainly he was trying to avoid risk, but the lack of anything resembling hospitable was striking to see at Hawthorne. In spite of those recent disappointments, I still rated four stars. But I would've given 5 stars without them. It is a great store. It is what it is. read more

We had a young gentleman help us today with getting some chickens, I wish I got his name but he wears a beanie. He went above and beyond to help us. I found myself here in search of mason jars. I had called their Fallbrook location in search for mason jars in a specific size. They told me to check out their other location which carries a variety of jars, but also they had the size I was looking for. I don't know how, but I happened to pass the store, it doesn't really have a sign that catches your attention. The store is huge! The employees are very friendly and helpful. I had brought my pup with me and they made a friend real quick with the treat they offered him. I didn't have much time to browse, but they did carry a lot of mason jars, some in a couple of color options. They carry quite the canning supply. They probably carry all of the things needed for Old MacDonald's Farm!. I told my daughter and son-in-law about the place because they were interested in getting chickens. I mainly told them about the place because they were specifically were in search of a chicken coop first. Well, they ended going later that same day and came home with chickens and no coop! In the back, outside of the store you will find chickens, many kinds, turkeys, peacocks, and chick's, they are the cutest! The chicken coops are displayed there as well. Stopped by yesterday to look at chicks, completely shocked to see how their animals are treated, went back again today hoping I would see cleaner cages. The pig they keep inside was marked sold, but it was sitting in filthy bedding. There was at least 4 piles of poop, wet bedding everywhere, dirty water, and at least 40 flies on the pig and in it's bedding. Pig was gone next day, poop and soiled bedding still there, still filled with fleas. The kittens are kept outside on the porch, in a cage with no levels for climbing, and only two frayed strings to play with. They after kept in a cage less then 4ft long, so hardly any room to play. Right next to them is a nasty flea tape filled with fleas. To top it off they are kept in.a bird cage, nothing on the bottom got their paws or to make it flat, that's gotta hurt their paws. The poor turkey was laying on the ground with a pile of what looked like yellow bile underneath him and ants crawling ALL over him, he was only able to pick up his neck. Went back today, turkey was gone. They have two peacocks in a tiny enclosure, which is not big enough for the male to even extend his feathers open. The chicks all have bare necks from having to stick their head out the cage through a hole to eat. The doves never obviously been fighting and they all have raw patches of missing feathers. These animals are all kept in cages way too small for their size, and have to live in dirty bedding infested with fleas all around read more

I have been coming to Hawthorne for about 6 or 7 years. I went to a different local feed store previously but was dismayed at how horribly they treated many of their animals. At Hawthorne, I could see an instant difference in how they cared about the animals' welfare. And they carry better quality foods for my chickens. I have learned a lot about chickens from staff members, and my dog loves to come along to get a free treat from staff and check out their barnyard animals in the back. He especially loved meeting the goats. There have been several times I have had issues with sick chickens and the staff has been great in educating me on how to care for them. They even have a chicken hospital on site for their birds that aren't feeling well. read more

Not only do the staff members have extensive knowledge on animal husbandry they will go the extra mile to help in any way they can! If there is a product you are looking for and they don't have it in stock they will try and order it for you. I know if I ever need a smile or just a bright place to lift the mood I go and look at their chicks or goats. They make me laugh and seeing the staff always makes me feel welcomed. This is a really cool store! My only brimmed hat is a Stetson crushable hat which is a comfortable hat, but it doesn't fit like it used to. My friend recommended I check out Hawthorne Country Store because it's by our work, so today I decided to drop by on lunch today. Sure enough, they had a good selection of Atwood hats, Carhartt clothing, boots, etc. I snagged an Atwood hat and they even had my size (I.E. fathead). Think I'll check this place next time I'm searching around for shirts too as they had some nice plaid shirts. read more

I've been to many feed stores in North County in search for feed for my chickens and I like Hawthorne the best. I've heard their prices are a bit higher than other places but I've always found the service to be just fine and I'm usually in and out within just a couple minutes. Nobody likes to wait around for 15 minutes buying feed and Hawthorne moves you through quickly. They have lots of cute animals, like baby chicks and turkeys, around to look at if there is a wait as well. Overall this is a great feed store. read more

Ive regularly visited this store for several years now. The staff has always been polite and helpful and they have the best price on the Honest Kitchen dog food I buy. My last trip to their store was during their sale and for the first time EVER they were out of my flavor of dog food. Heather went above and beyond to make it right and as always I left a happy customer. I firmly believe that excellent customer service like that is what keeps people coming back. Especially people like me who don't live particularly close and have many other pet stores to choose from between their house and Hawthorne. This place is always clean and the employees are always so helpful. I have had to pick up many bales of hay for school events and target practice that the guys are always helpful to load. Cool place for someone who doesn't really have experience with farm life. Their dog food prices are definitely cheaper than typical pet store retailers. I get all my chicken feed from here for a very reasonable price, but I've never been anywhere else. There are always animals in the back and it's fun to see them. Always lots of baby chicks for $5 each and that's where I got my two girls. That seems a little high to me considering I've seen them for $3-4 at any other place (pretty sure even Kahoots sold them for cheaper). Customer service is pretty good I'd say, this place feels nice and homely. They're very quick with bringing the huge feed bags to your car and I really appreciate that. My only gripe is that they always have chicks labeled as Ameraucanas when they are definitely NOT Ameraucanas -- just typical Easter Eggers. Definitely lowered my opinion of the place when I saw that mislabeling. Some of the people working there aren't as knowledgeable about their products as I'd like, but it's not a huge deal. read more

Got Chickens? Last week my flock was ravaged by coyotes. I had left the hatch open and awoke to a yard full of feathers. Our family was devastated, especially my seven-year-old. Yesterday, the owners were great and helped us replace our flock with full grown hens. I was surprised at how much the worker knew about chickens. He would pick up each chicken and was showing our daughter traits to expect with the various hens. They really know their chickens. Hawthornes has been great over the years. Our pot bellied pig, pet goat and house cat came from there. They also have everything garden from seed to canning supplies. I love the old country feel, a feed store unlike any other. Every time I go in there I find something new. It is great to know that there is a store like Hawthorne's in San Diego. They really take pride in their animals. My seven-year-old is happy to have her chickens back, this morning she had to go check on them before she left for school. read more
