What a mistake going here....I had walked by the place so many times, so I finally went with a friend. It is probably the worst Middle Eastern eatery I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot. First, the good: the place is nice, and the servers are really nice. The food sucks. Rice is dry inedible, from a box. Kibbi was actually awesome. the only edible part of the meal. Tabouli I not edible, old sent back Lamb flavorless blobs, was going to take home to fix, then decided not to since they were so nasty Bread, from bag, cold Wine Pinot Grigio plain but nice Hummus ok Falafel from box dry hard. Literally left 5/6 of my plate behind. Why does this place get so many good reviews? Cruise ship midwesterners? Ignorant locals? Friends and cousins? By the time we left, the place we literally empty, at 4 on a Saturday. That says a lot. Suggestion: fire the "chef" and stop using frozen, bagged produce. A really shatty meal. Amazing place in the middle of old San juan. It's off a little cobbled street so lot off ppl might not notice it. Food was amazing. Wife and kids are vegetarians, lots of options. As a local resident of Old San Juan, I have literally hundreds of eating options just right out my door. It is like walking into a giant Food Court at your local mall. With that said, my wife and I have had our share of good and bad experiences. I'll stick only to the good ones. We initially fell in love with the dining experience of the train bringing our plates right up to "under our eyes". My wife is an avid reader and an Agatha Christie fan of her beloved crime mystery book, The Orient Express. Then it was so hard not to fall in love with the owners of Carthage Express, Heidi and Madeline and their attentive relatives: the owner's parent-in-laws. And the food? I compare it 1 to 1 with Denny's Restaurant where one expects great food in a casual dining atmosphere. So what is not to like about their menu? Nothing. We both love their Gyro Shawarme, their middle-eastern, and local coffee, the pastas, the philly steak sandwich (my favorite) on regular bread, the Mallorca (with ham, cheese and butter), their Swiss Burger, the chicken quesadillas (just perfect) and their local beer Special.
