Ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich (with housemade pesto)
    Rob M.

It's hard to reiterate how absolutely stellar this place is, but I'll try. Although I tend to be more of an explorer than a repeater when it comes to vacation food, Spiga was too good to visit only once. We came back for coffee and pastries every morning. Though everything was delicious, the star for me is the Almond pastry. It is as pillowy soft as a cumulous cloud and perfectly sweet. One of these alone is basically worth the flight ticket. Just absolutely fantastic and a true cannot miss mouth experience.

I made sure to stop at this famous spot before leaving San Juan, and I'm so glad I did! It's a tiny space with limited seating, and people waiting in line stand pretty close to those who are eating--but it's all part of the charm. The smell inside is incredible, and the place is clearly popular with both locals and tourists. The waitress was so sweet and welcoming. We ordered from the chalkboard menu without realizing there are even more options available if you scan the QR code--wish I had tried the egg sandwich! That said, I was still really happy with everything we ordered. We had the guava butter and almond pastry, the quiche, and coffee. Everything was outstanding. I can't wait to come back for more pastries next time I'm in town!

I inhaled the cinnamon roll with orange zest with zero inhibition, and proceeded to stare at the rest during my entire meal in order to plot the next victim (opted for chocolate chip walnut cookies to go :). Service is super friendly. There's only a handful of tables inside, and two outside, but turnover is fairly quick, and the staff keeps track of who is waiting. We had two breakfast sandwiches - mine with homemade pesto, thin slices of ham and fried eggs, and my partner had the ham, brie and homemade fig jam with added eggs. The sourdough bread was perfectly toasted and delicious. Washed down with the really tasty mocha (made with ground chocolate that sinks to the bottom and gives you that last jolt of delight at the end of the cup), it was a perfect start to the day. Highly recommend!

I was a bit disappointed with the food. I ordered their orange cinnamon roll and didn't taste any orange. I was intrigued but the lame but it was a let down. Their sandwich (I think it's Brie) is really gross, don't order it. But the items my friends got looked great and they didn't complain.

Absolutely delicious breakfast sandwich and the perfect stop to begin our day in Old San Juan. Can't wait to return. Service was great and the place was charming.

The buns and coffee here were great. I'm a sucker for fresh baked goods lol. Their cookies were also delicious. What kept this place from getting 5 stars was the minimal seating, and how ordering is gone about. The owner is really nice though.

The best breakfast sandwich I ever ate was here. I took a picture of it. It's the one below captioned, "The perfect breakfast sandwich." And it was perfect.

The guava bread is my absolute favorite! The cookies are also really good! I love the fresh coffee. The ladies working are amazing. The decor gives old San Juan coffee shop perfectly!

Cute little cafe! Not much sitting space, but that is the Italian way, right? I grabbed a cappuccino for the road. Staff was nice and fast. The barista pulled a perfect shot. Very great way to kick off a day of walking tours.

Yowza! THAT was a good breakfast sandwich. And the egg scramble my wife has was huge (I had to help her out, which tired me out enough that I only ate two pastries - get the guava coconut and smile). Came back another day because, well it's fantastic. Everyone knows it, too: cross your fingers that your timing will get you a table. The staff are pros and are friendlier than I'd expect. This is a remarkable little place.

A brief aside: If you're driving here, expect a mess. Coming from SoCal, we make forays into DTLA and deal with similar stresses -- one way streets everywhere, dense traffic, extremely limited parking, pedestrians everywhere (many intoxicated and stumbling into traffic), potholes/construction, police closing lanes without reason, and stray cats running through the streets. Ubering here may be worthwhile! We had a 45 min wait, likely exacerbated by Spring break in PR. We used our free time to walk Calle de la Fortaleza -- very beautiful. They called my cell phone when the table was ready (don't forget to turn off your Spam blocker!). The interior is very unique and the place was buzzing. Service was slow, even by PR standards, and our waitress was the worst in the restaurant. She said little, brought us bottled water when we asked for tap, and never came back to check on us. We flagged other waiters for other incidentals like napkins and for our bill. The garlic knots and pizza were great. The pepperoni pizza was 10/10, with a fluffy crust but crispy otherwise. The Margherita pizza was average -- the tomato was sliced too thick and undercooked and the dough was soggy. In spite of some hiccups, the place was really good and I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that a second trip would be better -- other tables had good service and the other waiters were very helpful. I'm still not sure if we were give bottled water because we were gringo tourists and they figured they'd up charge us or if it was an honest mistake.

Asked for a lavender drink with rum, and they absolutely delivered. Floral, smooth, perfection. 2. Had the Santo Pepi with vodka--delicious and dangerously easy to drink. Coolest part? They had their main drink menu on their wall. Love the concept! Only downside: they've stopped carrying Ron del Barrilito, so the 7:9 drink was off the table. A little sad, and it'd be great if they updated the website to reflect that. Otherwise? Vibes were immaculate. Sat at the bar, had a great time, and would absolutely come back just for the drinks!

My…read moreboyfriend and I arrived around 7:30pm on a busy Saturday night and were lucky enough to grab the 2 open seats at the bar because there was a wait for a table. This meant the bartender David was our server who was SO incredible. He was professional, incredibly efficient, kind, patient, gave us tips about the area, and made great dinner recommendations. He never let our water get below halfway full which I truly value too. Now onto the food - we shared the caesar salad, vodka pasta with chicken, and guavanoli. What a treat!!!! The caesar was large and fresh. The vodka sauce was more tomato based rather than loaded with heavy cream, which made it fresh and flavorful rather than super heavy which we enjoyed. Now the star of the show - the Guavanoli - a chicken stuffed crepe topped with mozzarella and guava sauce. David said tourists usually stay away from this because it sounds so different but it's the locals favorite. I can attest this has been one of our favorite meals of the entire trip, and we agreed the guavanoli was one of the most delicious yet unique entrees we've ever had. We're here for 2 more days and want to come back to get it again. The crepe wrapping essentially tastes like an enchilada, and the guava sauce is NOT too sweet. It's mixed with a red wine reduction so it has a slightly sweet edge to it, but is 1000% perfect with the dish and delicious. The prices are on the higher size but the portions are large and totally justify it. With the 2 of us, we ended up having a very decent amount of the vodka pasta as leftovers to take back to the hotel. We didn't order drinks, but David was whipping up incredible looking cocktails! They also have really cool hand-painted large portraits around the room. Beautiful restaurant, amazing staff, and even better food!!
