Our good friends and dinner mates decided to stop and buy an ice cream cake on the way home. We wanted a pink one for Mother's Day and the server personalized it with a Happy Mother's Day greeting. The staff was extremely nice but this is the dirtiest Carvel I have ever been to. Literally every surface was dirty with food debris or smudges, the ice cream machines were filthy on the outside, the display case windows were dirty - I can only imagine how nasty the inside of the machines were. We were so turned off by the state of the place, we threw our ice cream out after buying it for fear of getting listeria. I have been coming to this Carvel for years. Every business gets some great and not so great reviews. Personally owning a business in Plainview I often get the same thing. The customer is unhappy because it's a really busy moment and a mistake gets made, or its busy and you haven't had a chance to clean up yet, or a delivery service makes an error, etc. Usually complaints get amplified but good things get overlooked or those customers don't have the time to write better reviews. After all the years coming here I can tell you this Carvel is well run, the owner takes pride and great care in being a great local business. As a business owner we are held hostage by the pool of potential employees out there and sometimes we get lucky and have a great crew, sometimes we have a bit of time with some not so great. Same with customers, most of them are great and supportive, some are just unhappy cranky people who are never satisfied and enjoy finding something to complain about. So coming from a fellow business owner, yes when it's busy it may look like there's a little cleaning to do (at the end of the day we all have that) sometimes an employee is not perfect (we're all not perfect) and sometimes an order gets screwed up (we all have had it happen) but overall I, and I eat a lot of ice cream) am always well taken care of here. Please don't judge a business by a moment in time, but rather by it's long term history. Shop here regularly and I'll bet you'll find it a great community resource with a really nice caring owner, mostly good kids making some extra money and super ice cream. Here we go again... except this time the order was placed on door dash and it was my mother who placed the order. If you ordered in the last hour and got our flying saucers we got your two "carvalanches" or whatever they're called. Hope whoever got our flying saucers enjoys them. Called the store like Jared wanted me to (instead of writing a one star review that the rest of the internet can see) to ask for the owner/manager but was told he's only there or available during the morning. The staff also said that it's not their fault. They blamed doordash. When we said we'll why isn't the bag labeled so it's clear who's order is who's they said "we'll when it's busy or the drivers are waiting or rushing us we don't" or something to that effect. We frequently order on Uber and Doordash and always get our orders with our names on it and very rarely ever have an issue with an order. This isn't an Uber or door dash issue. It's a carvel issue. This is probably the worst carvel my family and I have ever been too. Teens that are working don't make the orders right and make stupid excuses. My kids always get a Oreo cold brew milkshake, while we were talking the teen went on to make his own version of the milkshake with soft serve ice cream and fudge. When I noticed I'm, I asked him why he did that and he said that's the way they do it. I go to carvel every week with my kids in Hicksville and they always make the Oreo cold brew ice cream with the actual icecream. Waste of money for us, because my kids threw out 3 milkshakes . Swung by this Carvel before going to my friend's BBQ in the area. I should have read reviews that this place was very overpriced. I purchased their 8" round cake (the most basic one with the vanilla, chocolate and crunch) and it came up to ~$27 (tax included) !!! What the... Unless all Carvel's jacked up their cake prices, I'm pretty sure the last time I purchased that same sized cake it was around $15 (definitely not $25) but at a different location of course. My other friend happened to purchase the same sized ice cream cake too and commented about how shocked she was about the price so it wasn't just me. Some of their cakes looked really sloppily done even though I have to admit they had a nice variety of flavored cakes to choose from. I do have to say the nice, friendly lady (didn't catch her name) that was working there had excellent script penmanship. Most of the writings I've had done at Carvel's in the past had horrendous penmanship and one time, even had writing going down the SIDE, yes you read right, the SIDE of the cake because they couldn't fit it on the top! I visited our neighborhood Carvel today (Syosset location) to get my Dad some pistachio flying saucers. I was in a few weeks ago and there weren't any left, so I picked up some vanilla and chocolate flying saucers. So this time I was really hoping to get some pistachio. Stopped by this store to pick up a cake for Fourth of July... I was beyond impressed at how clean the store was, and how many precautions they appeared to take in light of COVID-19. The employees were extremely friendly and helpful, and clearly enjoyed working there - the atmosphere was collegial and warm. They had a wide variety of cakes and treats available, and even better, they had a display of formal cakes they do which were unlike anything I had ever seen at a Carvel or ice cream store. These were professional, wedding grade cakes that were beautiful to look at and - based upon the cake we picked up for the holiday - likely tasted even better than they looked. Everyone at our Fourth of July gathering commented on the Carvel cake, and it was the highlight of the dessert table. WORST CARVEL EVER. I grew up on carvel and this is the worst carvel I have ever been to. The owner clearly doesn't care at all about his business so I'm sure he won't read this - but let's hope other consumers do. I've lived here about a year and the chocolate soft serve machine hasn't worked properly the entire time - The ice cream comes out way to soft - so soft you can't even put toppings on it. The swirl function is also broken. When I asked the kids who work there why the owner doesn't fix it - it's clear the owner just doesn't care enough to invest any time, money or effort into his business. The place is ALWAYS dirty, they frequently run out of flavors, the hard chocolate dip is never available and the kids that work there are barely functional.
