Professionalism is non-existent. The rudeness, in fact, is systemic. Just look at previous reviews. The owner and manager are both vile people. I will never step foot in Carytown Pack & Ship again. While the junior staff is fine, the manager, Stephanie Clark, is completely unhinged. I went in to pick up my business mail--something I've done for months--and was met with a screaming tantrum. She slammed her equipment on the counter and began yelling at me in front of a store full of people because she wanted me to use an app instead of just showing my ID. To make matters worse, she then refused to give me my mail--a criminal act (theft) and federal offense since it's U.S. mail. If you are a business owner, do not trust this place with your documents. The lack of self-control from management is startling and the "customer service" is non-existent. Avoid if you actually want your mail. Carytown Pack & Ship is my go-to spot for all my non-USPS shipping needs. It's conveniently located in the same shopping area as Ellwood Thompson and Burger Bach, thus sharing a parking lot with both businesses. That said, I'd suggest avoiding a package drop-off during lunchtime, as you'll be competing with market and burger customers for parking spots. Otherwise, parking is typically a breeze and you can be in and out in just a few minutes. I often have prepaid UPS or FedEx packages, so I just run in, drop them off at the counter, and head back out to take on the day. I've never had the chance to really engage in a conversation since I'm usually jetting in and out, but the staff is always friendly and on the ball. Came here to drop off a FedEx package. Soon as I walked in, the gentleman behind the counter (who was dealing with another customer at the time) directed me right where to put it (on the table immediately to the right after you enter). Pretty efficient! I can't attest to anything else here, though parking was very easy and the storefront is attractive. Here's hoping they have what you need too. I have never met someone that put someone out of a store because they were mad w/the person on the phone on FaceTime. My god-daughter was shipping a package for me and something just simply got lost in translation. When my god-daughter went in to ASK A QUESTION the employee Stephanie was loud and snappy. I recently purchased dolls at a VA auction house. I requested that my purchases be shipped. The auction house selected Carytown to ship the dolls. The total auction sale was just short of $400. Carytown charged half the initial sales price to ship the dolls. As if $200 shipping cost wasn't bad enough for 5 Barbie doll, 2 Himstedts, & one porcelain doll (which arrived with broken leg). Carytown never disclosed the cost of shipping on any of their emails. Nor did the Carytown's employee provide a cost heads up during our conversation. I specifically ask the employee to ship the dolls by the cheapest means, however, two days later the dolls arrived in extra large shipping boxes. One box was 32x7x30. The only Phone conversation was around 4:30pm Thursday and dolls arrived mid day Saturday. Clearly the principle of the prudent man was not applied. Additionally during that conversation I asked the employee to mail the 2 himstedts in their original boxes. Oh no, she said the USPS will not allow us to wrap the boxes for shipping. She was totally deceptive and out to gouge the shipping price. From a location in Mid-Virginia via the cheapest method to Charlotte NC would not have taken just over 30 hours. This company took total advantage of a shipping opportunity to over charge. I talked to the Carytown employee once, received 6 emails however, the only way I knew the shipping cost was my credit card statement. read more

Yesterday I took in a package to ship to Arizona via ups ground. Weighed and measured i was quoted $63. I left and went to ups shipping in Carytown Court where the same package was priced at $41 even after adding extra insurance. Why the difference. Also, the Thompson location will not give you a receipt for a paid labeled package. read more

Just left store as I was trying to find the closest location to drop off a package. Lady with hair in a bun (apparently a manager or supervisor) was extremely nasty when I asked why I couldn't receive a receipt or some type of confirmation for my records that my box had been dropped off. Every other Fed Ex in the city is able to supply that whether by computer or email and it protects the customer if package is lost or delayed. Then she comes from behind the register, grabs the box and slams it on the copy machine while explaining something about making a copy. The bad reviews must be from old management. I went to this shipping store with a few packages to get shipped in Richmond and had a fabulous experience. With many packages mailing to different places they let me CHOOSE the lowest shipping price for each box and compare Fedex, Ups and the post office. Its great to have options and I dont think a UPS store would let me do that. Personally, I found the staff very patient with me and all my trips to the counter. In hindsight, I'm glad my wife snapped this pic before she sent me off on this shipping errand with the boxes we had laying around the house I thought I needed (was gonna be just for laughs). I thought going to the Fedex Store was going to be the best place for rates but I ended up having Carytown repack the fedex box with a new box because they found cheaper options for me with smarter sized packaging. 5 Star experience for me! My elderly father came to the store last week to Fedex a letter for me. Standard overnight delivery, domestic, in a FedEx envelope weighing less than half a pound. The person at the counter initially rang it up for $98.23 and then reduced it to $73.44 when my dad said that price seemed very high. It still seemed high to him at the reduced rate, but being constrained for time and under the impression that these were standard rates set by Fedex, he reluctantly paid. When my dad told me what he paid, I knew something was off. The shop was closed at that time so I called Fedex corporate and gave them the tracking number so they had all the relevant info about the package. They said that the rate for the exact same envelope if we had gone to a Fedex store would have been at most $38. They said that Carytown Pack and Ship would be invoiced $25 by Fedex as the wholesale rate for this shipment. Yesterday I went to the shop with my father to get some answers. The owner was there, and he said that Fedex Authorized Ship Centers (FASCs) are entitled to charge whatever they want and are under no obligation to disclose their markup. He would not issue a partial refund. I called Fedex again, this time the customer complaint line, and asked them if it's acceptable for a FASC to markup standard rates by somewhere between 200 and 400 percent. Moreover, the receipt gave no indication of a markup or surcharge. It simply said the cost of "shipping" was $73.44. Fedex said that this was way out of line with the markups that FASCs typically charged, and they apologized profusely. They said they are investigating this incident and will get back to me. As a small business owner myself, I believe in supporting local shops. But it's this kind of behavior that gives all small businesses a bad name -- arbitrary and unreasonable pricing coupled with a deliberately opaque fee structure. I hate to say it, but shops like this deserve to go out of business. read more

Carytown Pack & Ship - Receipt giving no indication of markup. - Shipping Centers Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I have used this shipping center for my law firm for years. Today I went in to ship a return back to Harrods London. I tried to explain to the mature woman that I understood the requirements of DHL but was nervous about returning such an expensive item, $3500, so I wanted to be sure I followed Harrods directions as well, which I had on my phone. She insisted all copies in the box needed to be put on the package in a certain way. I explained Harrods asked that one copy be placed in the box to track the return. She said, "I don't care how that company wants this returned; I'm doing IT MY WAY that is WHAT IS legally required by DHL" I said that is great. I am a lawyer, so I know a little about the law, so let's follow the law but ultimately, I ONLY care about what the company wants because they will issue my 3K credit and if they ask for a copy in the box, I want to provide it. Finally, I was so shocked at her behavior I took the box away from her and left the store. I ended up taking it to the DHL facility by the airport. At the airport facility, the DHL employee apologized for how I was treated at the partner site in Cary Town. She also unpacked everything the other rude woman had packed in the shipping label envelope and told me she didn't even pack it up correctly. She explained they are the actual DHL facility and that it was fine to put a copy of what Harrods was requesting in the box. Had I listened to the woman in Carytown, my return may not have been processed at all when the package arrived at Harrods. I WILL NEVER USE THIS STORE AGAIN. I WILL DRIVE OUT OF MY WAY TO AVOID THE UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE BEHAVIOUR. I wasn't going to leave a review thinking everyone can have a bad day. I actually told the representative at the other DHL that maybe the rude woman was having some personal crisis. NOW after reading all of the other awful reviews, it sounds like this happens all of the time in that business. I have used the UPS Store on Brook road multiple times. He was also weirdly condescending about how valuable the parcel was ($275) stating that the store had been around for twenty years and shipped paintings worth $2,000. He seemed to want me to know that my package was not worth his time. Then he insisted that my only option was ground shipping for $27 and dismissed me from the counter to help the next woman in line. Well, after leaving my package with this poorly run outfit I was unable to track it via UPS. The effort was put in by Joey to attempt to find my lost package and I was fine with that until I called and got the owner Vince. This is where my experience went south. After him passing the buck, and putting all the blame on UPS, and then inviting me to come to his store to look for my own package, he told me he sees this all the time in his 24 years running the business. I asked him did his establishment ever lose a package n those 24 years, at which point he became defensive, and told me he had two customers that needed taking care of. It was a simple question he never answered. I reminded him that I too am a customer. He asked me for my number and I reminded him Joey had it, and that's when I received the dial tone. Regardless of what you think of my experience, would you want to do business with an outfit that's run in this manner? Take some responsibility. You're underlings shouldn't be more professional than the owners. Passing the buck, is not the way to handle customer service issues. Hanging up on a customer with legitimate issues and questions is the height of arrogance, and poor customer relations. Oh yeah, and you failed at what the main thing you market yourself in doing, getting a package shipped. What a terrible establishment.
