A friend of mine introduced me to this place. It is just down the street from PBR. If you are looking for a specific kind of tea, you may have good luck finding it here. The store is slightly tucked back and can be hard to find. It is in a quiet area of town as well. Off the beaten path of Cary Street. You can get tea made to sip on there, or to go. You can also purchase loose leaf tea. Pricing is reasonable. There is a wide array of loose leaf tea. The three employees were amazing. They were awesome! I can not say it enough. They were so helpful, and they knew their product. If one did not know, the other would know. There is a punch bingo card, which is nice and unique. They have a huge selection of teas to enjoy in the shop or take to go with you. Ordered a mango matcha latte a few days ago, absolutely delicious. 5/5 for the earthy matcha flavor coming through with the taste of mango, neither overpowering the other. Today i returned and enjoyed a tea flight which i LOVE the option for- never seen that. I enjoyed the apricot, rose black, and Quirk blend, in that order. Bought the first two to enjoy more at home. Came in on a Saturday evening after a long day of exploring Richmond before we went to get Indian food. This place has all types of teas and even a couple of Chinese teas--especially the puerh tea cakes. You can get cups of tea but you cannot choose to make a cup of tea from the tea cakes. I got the Silver Needle tea and while the tea was fragrant and light like a white tea should be, it was kind of watered down by how much water they steep with the tea. I wish they steeped the tea for longer given how much water each cup had. The strawberry kiwi tea was a bit of a skip but it is pretty refreshing. The earl grey was extremely fragrant and would make a great tea latte. While I wouldn't recommend making a tea latte with white tea, they said they are okay with making it. I tried Carytown Teas with my fiancé a few weeks ago. They have the most incredible array of teas I've ever seen in one place- every type I could imagine is here! Many I'd never heard of, even. They also sell lots of tea accessories- fancy mugs, teapots, warmers, honey sticks, etc. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is dark, cozy colors, with antique and quirky teapots as displays. All in all, a nice ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will say the first time we came, it was an hour before close, and I think the staff (2 older women) might've been a tad overwhelmed. No one greeted us, no one explained how ordering or pricing worked, no one offered to tell us about the teas or answer questions. If I'd been new to drinking tea, I might've left, since I wouldn't have known what to order. We eventually flagged someone down, and they were nice (if flustered), but she did forget the honey in both our drinks (since mine was cold, she tried to add it after, but it didn't dissolve and just sat clumpy in my cup). The teas we got were delicious, and subsequent teas I've had have been equally delicious. I would hope they put a little more effort into greeting patrons/speaking on their offerings on a regular basis, but I do think I caught them on a bad day. The selection of teas at Carytown Teas is magnificent. They have over 250 and the menu is broken down into categories like green, white, black, etc. to make it easy to choose. The staff here are friendly and will let you smell all the teas you'd like! The space is inviting and they have a few tables inside in case you wanted to sit and drink a cup of tea. They have flavored sugar cubes like lavender and rose as well, which they allow sampling for! I happened upon Carytown Teas one pretty Saturday this summer. I really enjoyed spending a few minutes to look around and see all they had to offer. The small shop fits in an abundance of interesting teas along with sugars, salts, and other spices which I'm sure do nothing more than add some color of flavor to an ordinary day. The place is decorated in an extremely friendly, down to earth, friendly but fashionable tone. The individual jars with the personalized metal plates for Carytown Teas add a lot of appeal and give a contrast of uniformity against the more homely, assymetric backdrop to the rest of the decor. It looked like they have a tea bar in the back though I didn't venture up to it to see the menu or full scale of their offerings. The place was busy with hustle & bustle (good for them) as the shop owners and staff mingled with first time shoppers, greeting their visitors, striking up conversation about tea and other things, and trying to be accessible to anyone with questions. I can't give any business 5 stars from such a brief first trip in to look around but I do wish them the best. Carytown is at its best when it is stocked with friendly, unique local shops like this. Next time I plan to buy tea, peruse the merchandise more thoroughly, and visit the service counter in the back. FYI - this store smells great. Wow. Wow. And more wow. This is a hidden mecca for tea lovers! My local friend nagged me to stop in during my recent trip to Richmond. I finally made it about half an hour prior to closing time last Monday. No one else was in the shop, so I was able to ask a bunch of questions and sniff so many teas before making any decisions. It's all loose leaf but if you're more of a bagged person (like me), you can purchase a big pack of tea bags too. I've only tried three out of my four teas so far, but I can't delay this 5-star review any longer. I am in love with this tea! I've struggled with insomnia for so so long, but their Sweet Oblivion -- made with valerian root -- is my new best bud. Seriously. I've been drinking it nearly every night this week and within an hour or two, I'm happily in dreamland. I can't remember the last time this happened. Nothing else, other than the medically-induced-wake-up-hazy Aleve PM, has ever helped, and this actually feels (and is) natural. I hope this persists! I also purchased the Purple Haze for anxiety (of which I have a crippling amount) and it has worked wonders in getting me to calm down. I love it! My other tea choices were the Long Island Strawberry and the Immunity Booster. The strawberry is really nice as a casual choice, but I haven't tried the Immunity one just yet. Their tea selection is vast. You can find teas that calm health issues, fruit teas, black teas, green teas, yerba mate, etc. And Patricia, the owner, is the nicest lady ever. We were chatting for a while, and I told her about how I'm considering a move to Richmond. She gave so many tidbits of advice. I so appreciated her input! We left at closing time. My total for four teas (2 ounces each) + tea bags was around $60, which really isn't too bad considering the high level of the teas. Eureka! You found it! This tea shop will surely have the tea blend you are looking for! Pages of unique teas for any tea connoisseur's taste. A small shop packed with canisters of loose teas, tea pots, and tea accouterments. I also found here the elusive tea blossoms for my clear tea pot. They have a Quirk tea blend which I purchased and can't wait to try. And don't forget the tea sacs for loose tea, I love them! The teapot prices were a little steep, pun intended. I had one thoroughly enjoyable day where I and a friend got into a lengthy discussion with her ourselves [about zombie plans- is yours finalized?]. The tea is always good and high-quality which is, admittedly, reflected in the price... but anyone who drinks good tea knows it's not five dollars a pound or something crazy. Ultimately my one real complaint about the place? There's no bloody milk to put in my tea when I buy a cuppa... and when I asked, I was duly informed that putting milk in tea ruined the health benefits. So... The best tea shop I have found in Richmond! All teas are fair trade, organic, and most of them are direct trade. The shop owner does a wonderful job finding teas from all over the world. Her associate is extremely knowledgeable as well, and has many years experience with high craft tea. The variety and quality is GREAT. I highly suggest you try the QuangZhou milk tea for an excellent aroma, and the Houjicha for an excellent flavor. Tea lovers must visit. read more

Carytown Teas is a gem of a shop befitting a grander city than Richmond (sorry, Richmond). The selection of teas, all of which are organic and fair trade, is vast. The two employees that I've encountered, Patricia (the owner) and Mistie, are both absolutely delightful and extremely helpful. They are passionate about good quality teas, and it shows. I drink a lot of tea, and I won't buy it anywhere else. Although the prices are steep, the products are well worth it. They also carry a large variety of tea implements such as tea pots, cups, travel mugs, steepers/infusers/bags/balls, tea sets, whisks (for Japanese-style matcha, or green tea), and much more. The only way this place could be any better is if they served little appetizers to go with their delicious brews. I haven't actually enjoyed a cuppa at the store, but apparently that is also an option, as the place advertises itself as a salon as well as a shop. If you love tea, you'll be swept away by Carytown Teas. And if you ever move away from Richmond, or know someone outside the city who loves tea, they offer a mail order service, as well as a nifty tea of the month club, which would make a fabulous gift. As a testiment to their fine tea blends, they won second place in the North American Tea Championship in 2010, which is proudly advertised on the ceramic to-go mugs they sell. Here are some of my favorite blends, which Patricia lovingly creates by hand: - Masala Chai - Hot Cinnamon Spice (the perfect sweet winter tea; it warms the soul) - Russian Earl Grey (my favorite tea in the whole world; it's traditional Earl Gray with beautiful cornflower blossoms and orange peels, and it transcends description) - Moroccan Mint (makes a great iced tea in the summer) I also like many of the medicinal blends; they all have a pleasant flavor, though I cannot vouch for their scientific effects on my body. I figure they certainly can't hurt, and I do know that plenty of the ingredients (valerian, ginkgo, ginseng, etc.) in various blends have been shown in legitimate scientific studies to have health effects. There is a helpful list of all the tea blends and their ingredients at the counter for you to peruse, and Patricia or Mistie will happily pull down the canister of any tea you are interested in and offer it to you to smell, to see if it suits your fancy. Once, after chatting with Patricia for a while about what kind of teas I most enjoy, she offered me a small sample for free along with my purchase, which was a lovely surprise. In conclusion, if you're a tea lover in the Richmond area, you must go to Carytown Teas and experience it for yourself. You won't be disappointed. read more

This is a cute tea shop tucked next to Carytown Burgers & Fries. You could pass right by it if you didn't know what you were looking for. Owner Patricia Adams has a passion for tea, and you can see this when you shop her store. Just tell her what you like and she'll pull out varieties of different blends for you to smell. She's got a great selection of just about any kind of tea you could want: rooibos, green, white, red, black, and even those pretty Asian tea bulbs that blossom into a flower when you soak them in hot water. I went to get a small gift for a stressed-out friend, and she helped me choose a few different teas that offered a good range. Her shop also has tea accessories like big and small pots, strainers, tea cups, loose-leaf tea holders and more. Again, making it a great place to stop for gifts. The only thing that could make this shop better would be a tea room where you can sample some of the different varieties. read more

They have some beautiful blends and they are so friendly and willing to help you find something you'll love. If you're lazy and don't want to go to Carytown, Kroger carries some of their popular teas. That said, you should stop by the Carytown store because their selection is amazing. They have a small area where you can drink your tea in the shop, and they do stock tea supplies, but this is really a place to discover lovely teas and take them home to enjoy them there. read more

Wow, what a surprise. I have been a customer of Teavana for quite some time, they are VERY pushy, I had no idea that buying to could be a pleasant experience !!! At Carytown teas, the girl behind the counter was very helpful and answered the gazillion questions I had and pulled down roughly fifty tins of tea for me to smell. When I couldnt make up my mind she had a lot of suggestions and ended up hitting the nail on the head every time. When I got home I realized that I forgot my list and when I called, the girl stayed on the phone with me and went down the assortment of teas I bought and explained how long for me to brew each one and how hot to make the water, when getting off the phone she gave me her email address in case I had any other inquiries. Based off of what I saw online I wasn't sure if this was a tea shop that just sold loose tea or if it was a place to get a cup of tea or an afternoon tea service. Its mostly a shop that sells loose leaf teas and tea blends. But the staff will also make you a cup of tea which is especially helpful if you are not sure which one you want to buy. They do not have an afternoon tea service to my knowledge. I really liked the list of teas and blends that I saw. I have been hunting for a good mint black tea and found it here. I didn't see my favorite (Lady Londonderry) but other than that they really have everything else. I also liked that on the list of teas they sell, there are some steeping guidelines for each as different teas require different temperatures. read more
