I rate restaurants within their category and concept. I am not comparing a neighborhood Mexican restaurant to a Michelin star fine dining experience. If a place delivers quality food, represents its cuisine well, and exceeds expectations for its setting, that earns a high rating from me. We recently visited Casa De Avila in Leesburg, and I have to start with the horchata because it was truly the star of the meal. I am of Mexican heritage, my mom is Mexican, and I grew up drinking homemade horchata. This one tasted just like it should. It was creamy, clearly made with milk and condensed milk, with that soft sweetness and a gentle hint of cinnamon. It honestly tasted homemade, and that alone made me smile. Now, it is hard for me personally to give most Mexican restaurants 5 stars, and that has more to do with my background than the restaurant itself. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and grew up eating incredible home cooking from my mom, who is an amazing cook. That naturally shapes my expectations. In the DMV area, it has been tough to find truly authentic Mexican flavors. With the exception of La Jarochita, and Mancha Cocina Mexicana, which is more elevated but very well done, good Mexican food can be hard to come by here. All that said, Casa De Avila serves very good food and is probably the best I have found in this category locally. The sopes were made fresh, which makes a huge difference in both flavor and texture. The tacos were solid overall. The asada was very good, well seasoned and flavorful. The al pastor was good, but it did not quite have that deep, traditional flavor you get from proper trompo style preparation. The esquites were also tasty, and the kids loved that they added hot Cheetos. That is a trend we saw in Los Angeles years ago, so it felt fun and nostalgic to see it here. If I could offer one suggestion, it would be about the salsa. The salsa served tasted more like a bottled style Mexican salsa. I would love to see a true house made salsa roja or salsa verde, the kind where you char the tomatoes, tomatillos, chiles, and onions before blending. That deep roasted flavor is such a big part of authentic Mexican cooking and would elevate the whole experience even more. The service was amazing from start to finish. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive, and the staff really helped make the experience even better. Overall, Casa De Avila is doing a lot right. The food is flavorful, the horchata is exceptional, and it stands out in an area where good Mexican food is not easy to find. While my personal background makes me a tough critic, this is still a place I would happily return to. A solid 4 stars. read more

Casa De Avila is a fairly new spot in downtown Leesburg. I met up with a couple of friends Tuesday night for dinner. We had the queso as an appetizer which was only okay in my opinion. For my meal, I selected the chicken burrito which was full of flavor! My friends both opted for tacos and enjoyed their meals as well. Our server was attentive and very personable. I normally don't post reviews but I can't hold back on this one. Went to @Casa de Avila for the first and last time. Food was average at best, service was not great. Dinners for two came out 15 minutes apart so by the time the second meal arrived, the fist was cold and soggy. But here's the kicker, two Paloma cocktails with Casa Azul tequila ($54 at Virginia ABC) rang in at $90, yes, $45 each. I totally understand the need for mark up, but come on! So, in total for three tacos, a Berria Quesadilla, a side of Guacamole and two Paloma's $175.00 plus tip. Wow!!! read more

This place was definitely a hidden gem in Leesburg, VA and I'm glad to have found it. Coming from Laredo, Texas and Southern California and to Mexico many times, I can say this place hit the spot! First of all, the prices here are reasonable and not to mention the quality of the food. One of the best tacos, flavorful and decent portion. Ordered a plate of carne asada tacos comes with rice and beans, three tacos and ya'll only for $13.99 (As of July 2025), go it to go and even with that everything taste so fresh! Also got one al pastor tacos just in case the other three didn't fill us up. (It was perfect amount of food) You can't have tacos without a Mexican Coke or some aqua fresca, it's a must have! The interior is decorated like a classic Mexican restaurant, nothing fancy but welcoming. First time trying Casa de Avila and I had a great experience! The restaurant was warm and welcoming, brightly lit and beautifully decorated with Mexican and Christmas decor. The staff was friendly and explained some of the dishes and provided some good recommendations! I ordered the nachos with birria and that plus their 3 house made hot sauces were great! Perfect combination of crunchy, cheesey and beefy! Good portion size too. I also ordered a michelada, which is a beer with tomato juice and Mexican spices on the rim. It's tart and tangy so you need to be in the mood or have it as an acquired taste. My server checked on me several times but didn't clear my empty glass until I handed it to her. The food menu is also pretty small. Mostly just tacos, quesadillas and a few sides. Good for a quick snack but not the best dinner location. A fun fact, they host dancing 2x a month. What a hidden find! Tucked in a small kitchen, Casa de Avila serves some of the best birria quesadilla . Not to mention, their chips are my favorite in the area! I don't tend to have very high standards when it comes to Mexican food in NOVA. There's nothing wrong with Mexican/central American fusions. But truth be told, it is not Mexican. Casa De Avila EXCEEDED my expectations. We walked in about 45 min before closing. We were greeted by the owners daughter who was super. We placed our to go order and ordered beverages while we waited. My experience with Horchata in NOVA again is not a good one. But that's what I ordered. I cannot express enough how delicious their Horchata is. It was creamy and not too thick. No powder mix bs. It tasted of a bowl of arroz con leche. BLOWN AWAY! I highly recommend ordering one or having it for dessert. Just fantastic. I had the birria tacos. Meat was tender and full of flavor. I could taste the spices, the clove, bay leaf all the things that make birria what it is! The consomé was legitimate consomé , not watery nor greasy. I also had the taquitos with chicken. These things come loaded with all the marvelous toppings that make flautas ( taquitos) what they are. First time I called at 8:45pm and they said they were not taking anymore orders. 2nd time I called it was a 35 min wait so I chose not to order. Which is fine. 3rd time I called I ordered one carne asada gordita and one birria sope. It was almost $14. The meat in both were lacking flavor. Birria was dry. But the kicker is that they were teeny tiny. Miniature servings for almost $14. I could have bought so much more food somewhere else. Upon walking in, I immediately felt like I was walking into a family member's home and I loved the local Mexican artwork on display, too! The staff was very kind and accommodated my food allergies. Second visit back and tried the nachos & tacos. Nachos were ok. The chips a little too thick & needed more salt. Didn't like the cheese and needed more protein, I had the carne asada, which was very good. The tacos were good, but I've never cared for soft corn tortillas, I'll try flour next time. Fave Ghost Kitchen of all time! I stalked this place after learning about them from an article on the Northern VA magazine (https://northernvirginiamag.com/food/food-features/2021/10/08/fedexfield-tacos/). I tried to catch them on opening weekend at ChefScape in Leesburg, but somehow missed them (ghosted, wompwomp). This place doesn't have any tables but you can snag a seat anywhere in ChefScape or take your meal to go. There's a small alcove to the left of the bar area that all orders magically appear at...I've never actually caught someone putting food there, it's just magic. These tacos are juicy, cheesy, meaty goodness that drips down your hands like all terribly delicious food should do. Seriously, don't try to drive and eat these tacos...you need to dip them in the magical juices (beef consume) they arrive with, and enjoy every sloppy drop of flavor they can offer. You may need a bib and wipes after all that deliciousness, don't say I didn't warn ya! I've been inhaling these tacos since October, but I finally took the time to snap photos so I could actually post about them. The quesa tacos with birria are their signature item on the menu, and for good reason! Stop what you're doing and order some right now...I'll wait. No really, did you order yet? Get the birria quesatacos or if you're not feeling the cheese, they also make a version without. I've also tried the carne asada (delish, but birria outshines by a long shot), Al pastor (nothing to write home about, step child), carnitas (did i mention the birria?), shrimp, and chicken....you get my point. Platters are great, but why would you waste calories on rice and beans when you could save more room for tacos, am I right?! Haven't had a chance to try the tortas, quesadillas or carne asada fries yet...I keep going back to the birria tacos, might need an intervention (bring more tacos). Customer service is top notch. Dunno if it's the real deal (made fresh with rice) or fake (with a syrup) because although my cup didn't have the rice sediment you get with real horchata it's completely possible the broken rice would've settled into the barril long before they poured it in my cup- so- can't speak for the legitimacy of it - but it was really really good. Amazing all around, cannot make a bad choice here. The quesadillas are tops, but the tacos never disappoint. We have enjoyed Casa de Avila many times, and my review was overdue. The birria is SO GOOD but not overly salty or spicy. Have to get the consume for dipping for the full experience. Carne asada is wonderful, so are the carnitas and the al pastor. Classic street taco style with cilantro, onion and radish served with a side of lime. They have a ton of options and combinations so anyone can find something to satisfy a craving. Flavorful and filling, but not heavy. Now they are serving at Wheatland Spring Farm & Brewery on Fridays and Sundays so place your order, get a beer and then sit back for an incredible meal. We just did two rounds of tacos and quesadillas this past weekend, becuase why not! So happy Casa de Avila is in our community. read more

Not the best experience overall. Bad service, the food took 40 + minutes to come out. It was busy but not all the tables were full. Service was bad. The kitchen was where all the employee were. 3 tables got their food before us. Someone finally came out of the kitchen and argued that our order was placed just 20 minutes prior. If you're not prepared don't open. Plus the tortillas are not freshly cooked there, they are purchased elsewhere. read more

The atmosphere was inviting and authentic, perfectly themed to compliment the phenomenal food. This is a departure for the norm as far as ordering food, but the tacos are delicious. There is not a physical restaurant, but there is an eating area. You must place your order 25 minutes before the food is delivered to a counter, then you pick up the food, and eat in the seating area or have the food to-go. The unique set up is worth the experience. I ordered one pork, beef, chicken and birria taco. All the tacos were incredible. If you enjoy street tacos, this is a great place to try. read more
