This is one of my favorite places in all of Berkeley. The people are so friendly- on several occasions, when picking out gifts for friends, the cashier offered her opinion on certain combinations and pairings. My friends (some familiar with the shop and some not) were so impressed with the packaging and taste. They are thoughtfully made, cozy, and beautiful. You can even ask to split the frozen hot chocolate! My favorites include the mole, the aforementioned hot chocolate, chocolate cake, dulce de leche and the people. Never overpowering, too sweet, or too much of anything- all are rich, subtle, and feels like a freaking treat. Whether you're purchasing for yourself, a friend, a lover, special occasion, or for no reason whatsoever- this is all-around perfect "hidden-gem. Whatever you purchase is fucking worth it. Casa de Chocolates is an adorable shop you would not want to miss in Berkeley! They have the cutest and most delicious chocolates. The interior is small but cozy and the chocolate aroma permeates the entire space. They sell small chocolate bars for $3 each and the standard large bars for $7. I love that they have the option to buy small bars to give customers the opportunity to sample every flavor! I particularly loved peruvian espresso because the chocolate and coffee combination is incredible. I'm very disappointed with their service. I love their cakes, and had them make my graduation cake, which came out lovely! I thought, why not have them make my wedding cake? Casa de Chocolates does not specialize in wedding cakes, so I can not hold them too hard against this, but the work was very unprofessional. First, we made sure to tell the person that we wanted a cake for OUR WEDDING and that we wanted it to look pretty, we showed her pictures of my graduation cake and told her to make it look similar. Of course, more elegant. We emphasized several times that it was for our wedding and we wanted it to look special. She checked in with the bakers, everyone agreed to the challenge. The day we picked it up, we were all very upset! The font was very small and basic for out cake. There was a sloppy border, and no frosting on the sides. It looked worse than a basic Safeway cake! (sorry Safeway). The presentation just SUCKED. The girl did try to make it look better, and I am thankful for her efforts, but it was a few hours before my wedding, we did not have time. My heart was broken and a refund should have been offered because we did NOT get what we asked for. Again, they do not specialize in wedding cakes, so keep that in mind. Casa de Chocolates is becoming my favorite place to pick up gifts for people. Their chocolate boxes are beautiful, and the best thing is that you can bring back the box and they'll refill it at a significantly reduced rate ($1.50 per piece) so it's the gift that keeps giving! Their chocolate bars are very inventive, combining great chocolate with South American flavors - I highly recommend their recent addition, the Fuerte bar. It's topped with roasted quinoa, pepitas (pumpkin seeds), almonds, chili flakes and sea salt. The straight quinoa bar (Inca Crunch) is also wonderful, for those who are chili-averse (not that the Fuerte bar is that spicy). I also crave their luscious chocolate cupcakes regularly - they also have a deal with these: you get a discount if you bring back their little cupcake box for a refill. They can point you towards their vegan offerings, almost everything is gluten free, and they don't use gelatin. Very friendly staff and chocolate bar samples always available! I'm giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. They are a Latina-owned business that aims to make delicious chocolates using sustainable ingredients. From their website: "we aim to purchase the chocolate from chocolate purveyors who have a direct relationship with cocoa farmers. We believe that direct trade with cocoa farmers results in farmers making far more than Fair Trade standards." But when they opened in 2012, they purchased pre-made chocolate from Guittard, which is somewhat confusing since Guittard do use the official Fair Trade certification system. Most of their chocolate is a South American blend and in some cases they use single origin chocolate (the Quechua bar is Ecuadorian chocolate). In an interview, chocolatier Arcelia Gallardo says that "eventually we want to work with smaller cacao farmers and chocolate makers" but it has been 4 years since they opened, so it's time they provided an update on their chocolate sourcing - are they still mainly buying from Guittard or are they starting to trade directly with smaller farmers? Not that Guittard is a bad company - most of their cacao is Fair Trade and shade grown; some is organic. Casa de Chocolates don't mention if any of their cacao is organically grown but the staff member I talked to said she'd find out, so I'll update that when I go back. Most of their other ingredients are organic: milk, cream, eggs, butter, flour, confectioners' sugar, espresso beans, berries and herbs. As mentioned above, they provide good incentives for re-use of packaging used for chocolates and cupcakes, which is really great. But considering that many people won't be re-using or recycling the packaging it would be better to pack items like flan in small cardboard boxes rather than plastic clamshells. I was on my way to the Berkeley borough of Elmwood to meet up with a friend for lunch. I ran into one of my neighbours who was on her way to meet up with one of her friends for lunch. She invited me to switch buses with her since we were going along the same route to meet our respective friends. She suggested my getting a hot chocolate at Casa De Chocolates while waiting to meet up with friends for lunch. She informed me that it was the best cup of hot chocolate she ever had in her life. She was about to go into details when I informed her I have experienced the chocolate caliente aka chocolat chaud before. After browsing in Lululemon, I headed over to Casa De Chocolates. I was surprised that they were not open until 11:00 A.M., had to wait about ten-fifteen minutes. I took a bit of a stroll to pass some time away. I came back three minutes to opening. At 11:00 A.M., the doors were still not open. Hmmm, I am really thirsty and it is 11:00 A.M. Time to open! So I rang them up, I got a voicemail greeting and pushed a button to get a human to answer the phone. I got through and asked if this was Casa De Chocolate. Yes. I asked if they were open as the sign said they were closed. I was informed they were open. And the gentleman on the phone opened the door for me as I greeted him on my phone, "Surprise!" (Love it when that happens.) I immediately placed my order for the hot chocolate and the chocolate cupcake. I sampled some dark Peruvian chocolate while I waited. Very cozy inside at Casa De Chocolates. So much gourmet chocolate to choose from. If you check in on Yelp!, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, you get a free sample. I think this may be my new favorite chocolate place. Not only are the chocolates easy on the eyes, they taste exquisite. I'm nibbling on Casa de Chocolates' Quechua with Cacao Nibs from Belize (65% cacao) and the taste is so rich and pure. It was the gorgeous design of their chocolates that caught my eye but the taste is what lingers with me. I would recommend all the ones I tried - Mayan Expresso, Brazilian Sea Salt Caramel, and Canela. The Mayan Expresso had such a rich, bittersweet chocolatey taste, which complemented the dense, sweet ganache perfectly. The Sea Salt oozed with caramel when I took the first bite. These 2-bite pieces make beautiful gifts and the shopkeepers will also package the box nicely for you. Get them for someone special. I really wanted to try their panna cotta, flan, and Mexican hot chocolate, but I was running late for another event. Plus it's probably good I didn't overload myself with diabetes-inducing sweetness. It just gives me an excuse to go back. As with all gourmet chocolatiers, the prices are fancy. $12.00 for a box of 6 pieces that you can finish in one sitting if you really want to. What a fabulous place. Found it because of the Elmwood wine walk. Loved the Valencia orange chocolate and the small candies. This is a really special place. Try to stop by if you are in the area. The large bars were 7 each- or you save a dollar and get 3 for 20- and who doesn't want to save a dollar? The small bars (which I did not get) were 3 dollars. Chocolate flavors were exceptional. We loved the mole and the rose too- but the candied orange stole our hearts- so we got 3 of those! And some of the small candies- because they were so pretty and had such cool flavors- like tamarind and guava and rose. Here is a list of the wonderful bon bon flavors: tapatio (yes with hot sauce!), guayaba (guava), Flor de cana (rum and mint), canela (cinnamon), maracuya (passion fruit), cajeta caramel (goats milk caramel), chipotle caramel, Mezcal and sal de gusano, Mexican vanilla and caramel, Inca peanut butter, Mayan espresso, coconut caramel, Maracuya caramel (passion fruit caramel!), mole, tequila butterfly, tamarindo, Kahlua, mango, petalos de rosa, rompope (spiked Mexican vanilla eggnog) , pumpkin caramel. Loved this place for their hot chocolate. When you enter this place it transports you directly onto the set of the movie Chocolat, or at least how I'd imagine that set would smell - rich chocolate and spices. We had some of the vegan hot chocolate (they were out of milk) and the flan, both of which were spectacular. I'm kind of picky about flan because it has to be made just right to be good, but they nailed it - it was rich and creamy and just the right density, not too soft and melting and not chunky either. The hot chocolate was great too - just the thing for a cold December evening. I will say that I was bummed to not get a chance to have it with milk - I imagine it might have been richer, but the vegan version was great too. Their selection of hand made chocolates is pretty extensive too, and the prices are totally reasonable - the chocolate bars seemed to generally range from 3-7$. The hot chocolate was 3$ and brewed on the spot and the "small" flan that we shared between two people was 5$. Brazilian sea salt: I don't know if there's anything about this that makes it Brazilian per se, but it's a good, solid piece of salted chocolate Canela: Cinnamon was made to be paired with chocolate. Highly recommend! Guayaba: Guava is one of my favorite fruits, and I grew up eating a lot of it because it's my mom's favorite fruit. It goes really well with chocolate, I must say, though some might find the sweetness a tad much. The artwork on this truffle is particularly lovely Maracuya: Passion fruit complements anything it touches and chocolate is no exception Tapatio: Yeah baby, we're in the big leagues now! There's Mexican chocolate, there's Mexican chocolate with chili powder and then there's Mexican chocolate with Mexican hot sauce! This thing will make your lips TINGLE. Can't say it was my favorite, but it's worth a try for the sheer novelty Mezcal: We make martinis out of chocolate, so why not tequilas IN chocolate? Had they offered me a 50% discount on another box I would have said yes, but 15?
