IMO the morning roll is the absolute best--think flaky cinnamon roll!!! Be sure to have them heat it up for you = even better. Their savory items are good too such as spicy beef turnover. Going back for the 3rd time to try pizza and more, can't wait.

Amazing pizzas! I love their sweet potato leek pizzas. From the sweets, definitely try their chewy ginger cookies. They are heaven. I also highly recommend trying their mini loaf cake - the raspberry pistachio flavor is divine. I would recommend stopping in outside of rush hours, as the wait can be long.

my uncle always gets his pastries from here for family events. The service is generally good, the ambience is a café with outdoor seating and a grocery store.

    Princess cake

My wife's favorite cake is a good princess cake so I ordered one well in advance of the special day to make sure everything was perfect. The most important part was that a simple Happy Birthday message would be written on it. On the day I went to pick it up, the cake was enclosed in a box and plastic wrapped. Having a far drive to get the cake home, I wanted to avoid opening the box and exposing the cake to hot hair. I asked the staff to confirm that the cake had its message written on it. They verbally confirmed this and read the message off to me from the phone order slip. That was good enough for me, I trusted the staff. Don't make this mistake! I would recommend checking your order before leaving. When it came time for cake time the next day I was incredibly disappointed to find that the birthday message was left off the cake. This was a big let down for me and my wife. It's not the biggest issue in the world but our family has few occasions and resources for celebrations and this error really soured the event. I don't even know how to rate the cake. Everyone had a slice but all I could taste was disappointment and regret.

So many goodies! The fruit tart is my favorite!

Food: 9/10 Service: 10/10 Wait time: 5 minutes in line on a Saturday at 1pm Portion size: medium Value: 8/10 This is my second time coming here for their beautiful and tasty large fruit tart! It is hands down the best fruit tart I have ever eaten. It's so fresh with sweet and juicy fruits every time, even during the winter months! I don't know how they do it! The custard is soft and mildly sweet and gives a smooth texture in between the crust and fruits. The crust is the best! So buttery and delicious! I like how this dessert isnt overwhelmingly sweet like some desserts. It's also got that refreshing taste since there are lots of fruit on top which is super nice after a big dinner. I brought this to Thanksgiving in 2021 and again to a friend's dinner, and each time it was a hit! The fruit tart was all gone even though we were super full from dinner! Definitely a fan favorite! This place also has fresh breads and other pastries that I really want to try as well. I heard they also make their very own fresh pasta which I also need to try! There is definitely something for everyone here and I recommend looking and taking your time! Next time, I'm cooking Italian I'm gonna try some fresh pasta to make my homemade spaghetti and their bread to make Gaelic bread!

First time visiting in person after trying the fruit tart from a party, I had to come get one myself while I was in the area. Hands down one of the best fresh fruit tart I have had. The crust is nice & buttery, fruits aren't over ripened, & cream is the perfect sweetness. Other pastries and desserts looked delicious as well. Will have to give them a try when I return. The downside is that parking can be a bit tedious and since it is near Bart, it can get super busy on this street.

This is the writing they did for a special occasion cake. Ugh!

This review is not for the bakery items at Market Hall; their products are always very good. The review is for the writing on a cake I bought for a special occasion. This is the second time this has happened. I bought a tres leches cake (delicious) and asked if they still do writing on the cakes. They said "of course, no problem." Imagine my disappointment when I got to the party, opened the box and saw what was a barely legible "Congrats!" It was so bad that the caterer actually asked "what does it say?" Ugh. If there isn't someone who can predictably do nice writing on cakes they should simply stop offering it as an option. This is the second time they've ruined a special occasion gift. (Yes, I should've known better.) Definitely check the writing BEFORE you leave the bakery unless this (see photo) is acceptable to you.

    Vanilla Cupcake

Came here looking for a sweet treat while in the Oakland area. We tried the vanilla cupcake and the butterscotch pudding. The vanilla cupcake was not very good. It was way to dense and the frosting was so hard it hurt my teeth to bite into it. The butterscotch pudding, however, was really really good. I had a few bites and it was packed with flavor but could easily become too much if I had more. Definitely will come back again for the pudding!

I've stopped by Market Hall Bakery a handful of times and while it's a good bakery, it's certainly not my favorite. The pastries here are expensive -- as one would expect from an artisanal bakery. However, they're not the type of pastries you'd line up for hours for to bring over to your friend's house expecting them to be utterly blown away. Additionally, depending on what time you stop by, you may find the variety of pastries being offered to be pretty limited. I purchased an apple pear galette this past weekend and it tasted similar to one that I've purchased from Whole Foods before. The Brazilian cheese bread I purchased tasted a little stale, and was comparable to a cheese bread I've had at Andersen Bakery. With so many incredible pastry and coffee options in Oakland and Berkeley as competition, I hope Market Hall can step up its game to improve its pastries.

    All about the cheesecake!

It's been a good 6-7 months since visiting and now I remember why! When I look at all the goodies in the case, I get a bit overzealous with my purchase...hey, not a bad thing during this time as my family gets to enjoy these wonderful goodies while helping small business. Market Hall Bakery has a variety of savory (quiches, focaccia, turnovers, breads and sweet (cakes, cookies, pastries) goodies but my usual: * SPICY BEEF TURNOVER - flaky, buttery pastry filled with a flavorful ground beef with a slight kick * RICCIARELLI (almond cookies!) - if you love the flavor of almonds you'll love these soft, nutty, chewy, sweet cookies - I heart them! * PULL-APART CROISSANT - pieces of dough (formed like monkey bread) baked with caramel and pecan...similar to a sticky bun but using croissant dough - wowzer! * SNAIL - puff pastry with raisins and pearl sugar..not too sweet and delicious - delicious All 5 star items in my opinion and perfect for a "fancy" brunch...no Costco quiche here!...you can grab a Highwire Coffee after doing damage as it's about 30 steps over in a shared space. Service at the bakery was friendly, wonderful, patient and respectful while choosing items...especially, when everyone seems on edge these days so it's nice to receive service that's "normal" with a smile...major kudos! Safety protocols with one direction in, out, plenty of signage, staff wearing masks, plexi, etc. Arrived around 8:30 am on a Saturday with no line and plenty of parking

Find a new baker or stop selling these burned apple turners.

There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave.

Jamie W and I decided to pay a visit after our gym workout because we figured we could reward ourselves for breaking a sweat. Arriving in the last hour before closing, we were happily anticipatory that their display case was still well stocked. It was no surprise how gorgeous it was. We had seen the Instagram photos of the visually striking, trompe l'oeil "fruit" pastries (Photo 6). They were indeed mini-works of art with thin, white-chocolate shells that easily crack open to reveal appropriately sweet fillings. We limited ourselves to four items because we didn't want to get carried away...literally. Besides, they weren't cheap. Our priciest item was the $14.50 Peanut shaped like a giant peanut shell and filled with a light peanut butter mousse. There was also a strawberry gelee and a crisp peanut butter wafer that helped reflect the intended PBJ concept. It was just a bit sweet for me. The second item, the $12 Coconut, was my favorite. It was designed to look like a perfectly cracked open coconut with the outer hull made of textured milk chocolate and the "meat" made of white chocolate (Photo 7). The macapuno entremet core reflected co-owner Monique Feybasse's Filipino background. It consisted of coconut whipped cream mousse freckled with macapuno and coconut shavings, and a chocolate coconut sponge cake. The entirety was a true tropical experience. The $8.50 Pistachio Eclair was the most straightforward of the quartet with a golden pate-a-choux shell, pistachio pastry cream with a matcha-like powder, and chopped pistachios (Photo 10). The basic approach taken was enhanced by the quality of the execution. The $4.50 Madeleine was a comparative bargain and quite a treat, providing a soft-crumbed sponge cake covered in a pistachio coating shaped like a seashell (Photo 9). Monique and her husband Paul clearly know what they're doing, having extensive experience in Michelin-starred restaurants like the acclaimed Geranium in Copenhagen. On Sunday afternoon, there was a constant stream of customers, many of them regulars who knew exactly what to order. FOOD - 4 stars...craftsmanship and execution are aces, some satisfy more than others, also a bit pricey AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...crowded so hard to tell beyond the striking displays SERVICE - 4 stars...nice though necessarily transactional TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely an eyeful even more than a mouthful RELATED - Exploring Oakland?
