The English is very well, it's all authentic Mexican style and they collect any memento's for the lion theme. There's allot of beautiful original art work. The woman there know the menu's back and forth and know exactly what you want. My Spanish is very broken but even with my picky palate, they were able to make my plate perfect!. Originally a hidden gem we stumbled upon after a late-night volleyball! Now this is my second time back! The service was warm and friendly, and the place has that authentic, hole-in-the-wall charm that makes you feel like you've discovered something special. It's never overly crowded or trying to be anything more than what it is. Tried to eat here on a Friday for lunch and could not find a spot in the parking lot. Trolled around a bit and decided to wait for a better day. The restaurant is near the middle of a small and ancient strip center so maybe Friday afternoon was just a busy day for the strip. I don't know. But I decided to try again the next day, a Saturday morning. I decided to try 11:30am as I hoped the breakfast crowd would be tapering off and the lunch crowd not yet sobered up. As usual, I was right. As I entered I was warmly greeted by "Gustavo" who guided me to a somewhat secluded booth and went to fetch my water. There were only a couple of tables open besides my booth but they were all filled within fifteen minutes. So let me get this out of the way before I forget: I can't speak to the level of service everyone else got that day, but mine was five star all the way. Gus was funny, warm and helpful beyond expectations. Did I mention that I'm pretty sure I was the only gringo in there but Gus' English was impeccable. The decor is old Texas border town. The other side of the border. Not near the border. Not for the tourists, but the other end of town. Gus said the place is thirty years old and he'd been working there for thirty years. I believe him. Last non food comment: There are dozens of children's lion drawings on the walls. "Casa de Leon". Get it? Charming. The sandwich board outside the door listed several off menu daily specials. Among them a chicken dish, a mole, and puerco guisada. I learned of this spot here on Yelp searching for carne guisada tacos. Carne guisada is my white whale. I drove twenty minutes for a carne guisada taco. Gustavo recommended the special puerco guisada over the carne, so I ordered one of each on flour tortillas with onion and cilantro. I also ordered a pastor taco on corn similarly dressed. The carne guisada taco was very good. The beef was tender, no unchewable bites, no potatoes or other filler. The gravy was of a good consistency but there was something missing to make it perfect for my taste. (Comino maybe?) I would order it again. The pork guisada was better seasoned. Again, good meat, no filler a little spicier than the carne. Good recommendation. The pastor was very good. Onion and cilantro again. No pineapple? I missed it but ate every bite. The table salsas are excellent. The verde is world class. I will probably eat there again IF I can find a parking space and IF Gustavo is on hand. I'll wait for the table. P.S. I kept the menu after ordering and realized I had somehow missed the cabrito. I'll definitely be back for that! read more

It honestly felt like being transported back to a cozy little spot in Puerto Vallarta--the vibes were immaculate. It felt like home, like sitting down to eat a meal made with love. The service deserves its own shoutout. Every waiter had an amazing attitude, and it didn't feel like tables were assigned to one specific person. Instead, the entire team worked together seamlessly--communicating, helping each other, and making sure everyone was taken care of. They joked around the way family does, which made the whole experience feel warm and genuine. The food was outstanding. I tried the Guayil (Mexican Omelette), my daughter had the huevos con papa, while my husband ordered the chilaquiles with green sauce--every plate was delicious. Taco Tuesdays give me the joy of finding places in this city to try their tacos. After being here a few times, they deserve their props for having some amazing tacos at a very favorable price. The barbacoa, pastor, carne guisada, and fajitas are my order. All tasty and perfect texture of juicy and succulence. And the tortillas held up nicely to support the proteins and toppings. Someone recommended this place and said they are known for their barbacoa and carne guisada. That got my attention. Tonight, I decided to check them out. They did not disappoint. This place is great! This is one of the better late night Mexican options in town, and it's hard not to love it. I've been coming here for a long time, and I like to do my little Mexican dance here when I'm here, with some of the great music (such as Selena Q and Los Angeles Azules) available on the jukebox. It's definitely one of the better places around for late-night Mexican food. and they were very friendly and kind enough to serve me very late at night, which I very much appreciated. Houston definitely has some of the best Mexican food imaginable, and this is one of many great places. My friend and I had a horrible experience here. From the moment we walked in, there was no one to greet us, and we immediately felt judged and unwelcome. The place looks more like a bar than a restaurant, and it definitely doesn't feel like a family-friendly environment. I absolutely love Mexican food, it's one of my favorites, but this was the first time I've ever been to a Mexican restaurant where the food tasted so bad. While I was chewing, there was a horrible aftertaste, and it honestly seemed like the mozzarella cheese was rotten. The quality of the food was extremely poor and needs serious improvement. This place does not reflect the warmth, flavor, or hospitality that Mexican culture is known for. I strongly believe it should be inspected and held to better standards. I have been coming here ever since i was but a little boy, and in my opinion, it is still as good as when i came the very first time. Some restaurants have certain styles that they spend time achieving, but this place feels like im right back at my grandmas house. This restaurant serves food that takes me back to my childhood. And don't even get me started on those immaculate homemade flour tortillas, they are best on a Sunday morning! The waiters are all very nice people and greet you, even if their english isn't perfect, they try! No frills Mexican food that was established in 1969. What I liked. Breakfast had scrambled eggs with ham and veggies. Eggs were nicely scrambled, not dry. Served with beans and choice of tortillas. Bonus at Breakfast they even bring out warm chips with salsas. Service was spot on. Attentive but not overly so. Bonus, I got to meet Leon who visited tables checking in customers. Found this place through yelp while looking for some tasty traditional Mexican tacos. They have a sprawling menu of options, but I went ahead with my plan and ordered four tacos on corn. When the tacos arrived, they looked amazing! They were big and stuffed with meat and toppings. I definitely over ordered! As for the fillings, the pastor was super delicious. The marinaded pork was popping with flavor that was complemented well by the fresh cilantro and onions. The chicharrones and birria were pretty good too. Yay for having goat as an option! The barbacoa was a total let down it terms of flavor and consistency. This was the leanest and blandest barbacoa I have ever had. The tortillas themselves were also a bit of a letdown. I visited this restaurant about a week ago for dinner for the first time. Parking on that weeknight was easy in the lot in front of the strip center that the restaurant is located in. After being seated and the menus delivered, the table received the customary chips and salsas. Here they give you two salsas, red and green. I thought that both the chips and salsas were average in taste as compared to other restaurants. Nothing stood out and after a few chips, I stopped eating them. My order that night was for the mixed fajitas ($13.99) requesting charro beans instead of refried and corn tortillas rather than flour. Within 10 minutes of ordering, my entree arrived. I was pleased with the amount of meat on the sizzling platter consisting of both beef and chicken. I started first with the beans and thought they were very good with flavor. I liked them (4). The meal also came with guac, pico de gallo, sour cream and of course rice. The meat along with the store bought corn tortillas were just ok like the chips and salsas but again did not stand out enough to warrant a 4 score in my opinion. Not a bad meal mind you but I can think of several other $14 fajita meals at other restaurants that I would rather eat. Table service here was good. I came here since it's regularly recommended on Spring Branch social media pages, but we found it really underwhelming. I had a plate with an enchilada, burrito, and crispy taco. The crispy taco meat did not taste seasoned. The burrito was very unappetizing and covered in a thicker tomato sauce that was super bland and more Italian than Tex-mex. The filling was more unseasoned meat--fajita beef--no beans or veggies at all. The enchilada was just like the burrito in having the the same tomato sauce, but I had this with just cheese. It really wasn't better. The chips and salsa were disappointing too. The chips were really thick, again, devoid of flavor, and stale. I would say I'll give them another shot for breakfast since that's well rated, but with Tacos Dona Lena in the same vicinity, it's gonna be hard to ever feel compelled to return. From the on set, the green and red salsa were full of flavor and Mexican spices while washing it down with a Mexican Coke. For the main, it was enchiladas. The gravy that topped the enchiladas had lots of love in from whom ever made it. The dish comes with 4 enchiladas, topped with sauce and white cheese. Lots of cheese. On the side was rice and beans. I'm happy to say I've found my favorite Mexican restaurant thus far in Houston. I stumbled upon this place browsing Yelp in search of a chimichanga that would satisfy my late night craving. And I was NOT disappointed. The chimichanga was cooked just right and filled with the juiciest beef I've ever had. They use a cheese sauce in both the rice and beans, which added an authentic and succulent taste to both. I also had the beef fajita and barbacoa tacos which were just as out of this world. The green sauce was SO delicious (and spicy). The restaurant itself is located in a rougher looking area in Spring Branch. So don't expect to walk into the Ritz Carlton. But everyone knows that the hood spots have the best tasting food. This will be my go to Mexican restaurant going forward. read more
