Allow me to be Review No. 1,100 following my visit to this wonderful culinary gem yesterday. By default, Spring Branch is Houston's Koreatown, but it's not unusual to find establishments with Spanish-language branding on them throughout the neighborhood. And Tacos Doña Lena, on which I'll heap tons of praise on, is among them. A group of friends and I had supper here before a live show down the street at Eighteen Ten Ojeman. Upon seeing the storefront when we pulled into the parking lot, my first thought was, "Okay, this is legit Mexican, not Tex-Mex." The interior is quite small with some tables and an ample late Saturday afternoon crowd. What caught my eye is how the environment is what you might expect to find at a family-run taqueria off the beaten path. Rock en Español blaring from the sound system. Colorful papel picado draped from the ceiling. A framed Mexican flag and several references to the central Mexican municipality of Guanajuato. The intoxicating smell of spice-laced grilled beef wafting through the air. Simply put, we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. I glanced at the menu. There are numerous, delicious-sounding items that happen to be wallet-friendly, a bit cheaper than if you were to go to Gringos or Jimmy Changas. According to a mutual, the tacos here are the main draw, but what really caught my attention and appetite was the ramen birria. Mujeres y caballeros (ladies and gentlemen), let me proclaim that Tacos Doña Lena turns a noodle dish with origins in Japan and is a known staple in college dorm rooms into a must-try on this part of America's fourth-largest city. Two amazing food cultures unite for a fiery meeting of the minds. Anchored by a rich, tasty consomé that's spicy but not enough to where you need to drink multiple glasses of water, there's a prime mix of ramen noodle, beef birria, cheese, fried egg, rabanos, garbazo, and corn accompanied by cilantro, onions, and a pair of fried tostadas. I was so impressed with how the contents of the ramen blended together. Since it was ramen after all despite the south of the border touchup, I still ate it the traditional way: pick up the noodles and sip the soup. There was so much that I had no choice but to put it in a takeout container. Sure, Spring Branch may be home to some great traditional Korean restaurants, but don't sleep on Tacos Doña Lena. read more

There used to be a place, actually a chain of restaurants, and their slogan was the place to come for ribs. Well, in the same vein this is the place to come for birria. Although I opted for enchiladas rojas. Intense garlic. Rice is too salty for my personal preference. Beans good. Enchiladas also more salty than my preference. But still enjoyable. TDL is a Houston treasure. Highly recommended. Two locations now. Festive. Great ambiance. Good food. Nice people. read more

TDL has become my new go to spot when I am craving tacos. I've tried almost every protein they offer with an exception of a few. They do offer various vegetarian options as well which is a plus. On the weekends they have menudo in case you need to cure a hangover or satisfy that craving. You order at the counter and then receive a number to take to your table/seat. The vibes are casual, lively, and homey. It gets pretty full during peak hours but plenty of seating also on their patio. I love dining in and trying all the salsas they have to offer. The creamy salsa verde and cry baby has to be my favorites. Their Birria tacos and quesabirria is really good. Don't forget to wash it all down with a big cup of horchata. You definitely leave this spot contemplating what you would order next time because it's that good! read more

7.5/10 I recently tried Tacos Doña Lena as part of my search for the best tacos in Houston. I ordered five different tacos and I'm ranking them from favorite to least favorite. For context, I'm originally from Los Angeles, so the Mexican food I'm used to may be a little different from the Tex-Mex style here. My favorite was definitely the pastor taco. I tried it three ways -- on flour, on corn, and gringo style. The gringo style was by far the best. It comes with lettuce and tomato, and it honestly tasted significantly better than the plain versions. I'd highly recommend doing the upgrade if you order the pastor. My second favorite was the carne asada taco. The meat itself was really good and flavorful. My least favorite was the chicharrón verde. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't good to me. It was pretty tough to finish and I personally wouldn't order it again. I also really didn't like the rice. They had like a smoky flavor to it. I don't know what to describe it like, but I did not like it at all. As for the sauces, I wasn't crazy about most of them. The green sauce and the others didn't really stand out to me. The only one I really liked was the orangey-red sauce, which had the best flavor out of the options. Overall, the tacos were good, but not the best. I actually drove about 40 minutes to try this place because so many people said it was the best tacos in town. My partner and I are new to the area and are looking for hidden gems to explore! I visited this location specifically twice before leaving a review. On both visits, the staff and waiters were incredibly friendly and helpful from start to finish. During my initial visit, I dined in, and Alejandro was a great help with guiding us through the menu items. The restaurant has a lovely ambiance and a warm atmosphere. I tried the birria ramen and a birria taco à la carte just to sample their offerings. Both were a perfect 10/10, and the amazing pineapple and mango beverages tasted as if they were made with love. I was truly impressed! They offer at least 6-7 different sauce flavors to complement the meals, but honestly, I didn't feel the need to add any sauce because everything was seasoned to perfection and packed with flavor. It was so good that I had to return one more time before writing my review. Once again, they didn't disappoint! I ordered the same items, which I think will be my go-to from now on--the birria ramen. We read so many reviews about this place being the best taco place there was. Everyone was nice and inviting with allowing us to eat outdoors with our dog. The food was underwhelming and under seasoned. The carne asada machete was cheesy and cooked right, but had no temperature. Even with the sauces, it still lacked flavor. The birria quesadilla was not flavorful at all. The consume was light and bland and did not have any taste or crunch. Update Dec 2025 - the food, vibe, and service continue to be stellar! We have tried the newer seasonal soup options including the caldo de res and caldo de albóndigas, and we highly recommend both. Try the caldo de res if you want a soup that's a little heavier, beefy, and more heavily spiced. Go with the albóndigas if you want something lighter and cleaner, closer to a chicken soup type broth. Don't forget to add the rice and toppings into the bowl, squeeze the lime, and dip those handmade tortillas in the broth. read more

Been wanting to checkout this place for awhile, always good to see a successful, well-fun family owned restaurant with multiple locations. The birria is the star of the show and it definitely didn't disappoint. Quesabirrias are a fan favorite. I personally loved the torta I got. The bread had a perfect crisp, and pairing it with the a side of consomé (which was nicely seasoned) made it even better. They are also big on sauces here (they'll bring like 6 bottles out for you to try, which was a fun experience trying to figure out which one was the spicy one so you can trick your non-spicy tolerant friends). It was a very lively atmosphere for a Friday evening, with a steady rush of customers and lots of takeout orders flying out. There's both indoor seating and a patio, but it can fill up fast. Parking wasn't an issue in the shopping center. It's a counter-order setup, and service was fast and efficient. Overall this is a must-try if you like birria! They also serve breakfast. Despite the pricing being a bit higher than other comparable Mexican restaurants in the area, I'll have to say the hype is justified. Would definitely come back! read more

The food was absolutely amazing and I'm so glad I gave this a second chance. I originally visited the Heights location and got the birria tacos. They were pretty greasy after a couple of bites and I didn't feel like it was anything special. I went back to the spring branch location with a couple of friends. I got the three tacos with the rice and bean plate. I got beef and tripa and it was amazing. I recommend getting the tripa crunchy. They do have a taco tuesday deal with 5 tacos for 7 dollars, but the tripa isn't included as it's a specialty. The waitress was excellent explaining the spice levels of the salsa sauces. I would say the spring branch location can get packed inside so some people had to take outside seating. read more

It's very delicious we ordered "el chanclazo", "ramen birria" and two tacos lengua and barbacoa and it was worth the drive! The atmosphere is fun and the music is great. Cute little restaurant with few tables but plenty of more outside for more seating or a quieter vibe. The service was amiable and quick to serve. A lot of takeout orders/ pick ups. read more

Doña Lena's is our go-to spot for chilaquiles, breakfast tacos, quesabirria, tortas, enchiladas, etc. Everything is made to perfection and the salsa variety is insane. (taco green & habanero are elite) We frequent the Hammerly location, which is the original. This location is small but good amount of seating inside and out on their patio. The line can get pretty long on the weekends so be prepared for a small wait. In short - good vibes and good food. Doña Lena's is a must visit when in Houston! read more

When I was working in Spring Branch, I frequented this location a lot. Now that my family member has moved near here, I'M BACK!!! I really love the new changes they made in regard to the decor, it feels very homey and friendly. This is a place where you can come during your work lunch, with family or alone. They have expanded to other locations which is a testament to how good their food is. I typically order the Birria tacos or the Tostada. Their Frescas are also very good. I love they do not skimp you on their food. It's pretty fast and not a long wait time. Parking is available. THE BIG: Located in the spring branch area of Houston, Texas. Small but very fun restaurant with a parking lot outside that gets very full. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here on a food tour of Houston and this was one of the spots we needed to try. They've been popping up on many of the food lists I follow. Walking inside, it's like you're transported to little village in Mexico with all the colorful flags. It's not necessarily a big place but it packs big culture. We got the birria tacos and they came out so crunchy and fresh. The dipping soup was great, maybe a lil too oniony for me. We also got a bucket of sauces that ranged from very mild tomatillo to the crybaby (ultra hot). THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall the damage done here was around $15 for 3 birria tacos. About 15 meat, and 3 meatless taco options, birria options, platos, antojos, antojitos, and sides (but no queso at this location)! You can't go wrong with any of their sauces (all 6 of them), and the atmosphere feels even more Colorful, festive, and bright, in the intimate space...just like their tacos. At both locations everyone is always friendly. I have a love hate relationship with the chicken tinga. On this particular day, while delicious, it bridged the line of too spicy (and I love spice). Whether the bite is perfectly spiced or a little over, it's always an enjoyable experience. When I moved to the neighborhood in 2022, I lucked out by choosing to live near one of the best Mexican restaurants in Houston. Everything I've had at Tacos Doña Lena is delicious. In particular, I'm a fan of their birria items (quesabirria, quesadilla). I also love their breakfast chilaquiles, which are very filling. While I sometimes do takeout, their in-person service is nice -- food is ready fairly quickly and the staff ensure you have everything you need. They also tell you about all their salsas, lining them up from mild to spicy. There's indoor and outdoor seating and it's not too crowded inside. read more

We had a very disappointing experience today. My husband ordered a pambazo with no lettuce, tomato, or avocado. After receiving the order, an employee ran out to our car saying they forgot the sausage. My husband also pointed out that the sandwich was full of lettuce, so they took it back to fix it. When they returned it, it still had lettuce and avocado inside. My husband went back in again and was told, "we took everything off already," which was clearly not true. I then had to go in myself for the third time and ask them to remake it completely. Less than five minutes later, they brought out a "remade" pambazo using the same bun, with undercooked, hard potatoes. After spending nearly an hour trying to get one item made correctly--and $40 on our order, this was extremely disappointing. I then had to go back in a fourth time just to request a refund because they could not get the food item right. I can see why Dona Lena is rated one of the top taco spots in Houston. The tacos were hit and I'll for sure be back multiple times this year. I ordered four Carne Asada taco with corn tortillas. A side of Mexican rice and Pina Pepino Agua Fresca. The tacos were cooked to perfection and seasoned well . I love that they give you seven or eight different salsas to try out. I'm a spicy type of girl, so of course I went for the hottest salsas. The Mexican rice was my least favorite. I probably wouldn't order it again. However, the Agua Fresca was so delicious. That was my first time actually trying the drink and I would definitely get it again and try the other flavors. I love the ambience. It was very colorful and vibrant, and the patio area is nice as well too. I can see myself sitting out there when the temperatures drop cooler. I stopped by with a group of coworkers for lunch and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm always a bit skeptical of "authentic" Mexican restaurants because I'm spoiled by the food at home. However, I would definitely say this place is truly authentic. They of course have popular dishes like Birria Ramen and Quesabirrias but the food is good. I had the quesabirrias and I was shocked by how ginormous they were! You definitely get a good value for the price you pay. I don't think the photo does them justice, they were larger than my palm, and $18 for three. The Pineapple Agua fresca was also super delicious and refreshing. My only note would be that the consomé and rice lacked flavor. Other than that, I'd definitely come back to try their other food. First things first: COME HERE AND EAT! The food is PHENOMENAL. My partner really struggles with Tex-Mex, so the discovery of this incredible authentic spot was a huge get. The fact they are *so* vegetarian friendly is amazing. This is our third or fourth time (so hard to keep track), and we're so grateful to the friend who introduced us to this spot. This was the first time we've had an issue with our order at this particular location, but the staff were so attentive and quickly addressed the issues (first received the chilaquiles with scrambled eggs - instead of egg whites - then still didn't receive the soy pastor we had ordered). Tacos Doña Lena has been on my list to try for a long time, I've heard it's some of the best tacos in Houston. The stars aligned and I was in the area for an appointment so I decided to try it out finally. I decided to order in the yelp app/powered by grub hub for takeout. The ordering was straight forward and my food was ready at the time promised. Parking was easy, they have an entire lot that is shared with the other retail tenants in the shopping center. When I arrived the staff was so friendly and welcoming to everyone that walked in the door. I didn't feel any uneasiness at all. I felt that was a highlight of the trip, I would go back just for the staff and environment but the food was also fantastic. I ordered the chicken fajita torta ($13), starter pack salsa ($3) and the aguas Frescas pina pepino ($5). My food was packed securely. The torta was massive, you could easily split it into two meals. My husband really enjoyed the salsa starter, I brought that home for him to sample the different kinds. If you decide to dine in, they have a bucket of all six kinds in squeeze bottles and you can pretty much use as much as you want of the salsas, so if that's your thing, go crazy! While the aguas frescas was good, I felt it was a little too sweet for me and a high price point for what it was. I'd rather pop a beer once I get home to pair with my torta. All in all, if I'm in the area again, I will go back and try other times. This is a solid spot. read more
