I don't hand out 5-star reviews very often, but Casa Enrique earned it along with a Michelin rating too. Everything started strong with excellent drinks, fresh guacamole and chips, and a delicious trio of homemade hot sauces. The standout of the meal was the chicken enchiladas with green sauce, which were packed with flavor and easily one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. Our group also saved room for dessert (Pastel tres leches), and it was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. From start to finish, the food was outstanding, the flavors felt authentic, and every dish was well executed. It's easy to see why Casa Enrique has earned such a strong reputation. Great spot! Came with a friend who's been wanting to check them out. We went early and had a ressy so we were seated right away. They do have an outdoor patio which is nice for the warmer months. They have lots of cocktail options, too many to choose from but we really liked the ones we got, the Aguachile margarita and Jamaica margarita. Very unique! We started with the Aguachile de camarón that was extremely delicious! Highly recommend getting it. Has a little kick but nothing crazy. Casa Enrique offered a unique, nontraditional experience embodied by house made mole and walls decorated with numerous mirrors and very little decorations. You could feel the authenticity when visiting the restroom as well, with steps uneven and taking you directly into the kitchen, passing by busboys and watching chefs create delectable dishes. Mole was rich with heavy chocolately flavor influencing every bite. In addition to the housemade classic mole, Lengua Taqueria was delicious with a slow cooked cow tongue not a typical dish. But, the best dish in my humble opinion was the Ceviche de Pescado, deliciously served with lime and chile serrano. As we were walking around LIC looking for a place to try, I pulled up Yelp and found that I had bookmarked Casa Enrique. It must've been a while since I did that because I don't even remember doing it. However, after walking inside and seeing those Michelin stars on the wall, I see why i had bookmarked the place previously. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and were quite hungry when we finally sat down. I asked the waitress for recommendations and ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, the chicken flautas, and the daily special of the carnitas. The enchiladas and flautas were a hit for us as the sauces provided more complexity to the dishes; the mole sauce tasted as good as advertised. On the other hand, the carnitas was unremarkable and small in portions, maybe the size of a small fist? It was basically build your own tacos with four pieces of tortillas and some pickled veggies and sauces. At an average cost of nearly $10 a taco, I had high expectations that were met with disappointment. The decor here was casual and comfortable. The service was average but acceptable. read more

Being a Michelin restaurant, you can count on excellent dishes at Enrique. Conveniently located just two blocks from the Vernon Blvd/Jackson Ave stop on the 7 subway line. We've been here twice now. The first time we were seated immediately even though we didn't have reservations (before 6:00pm). We did get reservations for our second visit on a Monday evening and this time we were able to be seated outside. Service was very good. We ordered several dishes including Albondigas En Chipotle, Ostiones Empanizados, Mole de Piaxtla, Chamorro de Borrego al Huaxamole, and last but not least, the Pastel Tres Leches. The Albondigas (meatballs) were unique in that there was a boiled egg in their centers. Flavorwise, the meatballs, and the chipotle sauce the meatballs were lolling in, were excellent. I also liked the ball of fried noodles that came atop the albondigas. The Ostiones Empanizados (fried oysters) that rested upon dabs of a chili mayo were delicious. I would argue they were my favorite dish of the night. JP loved his hefty-sized Chamorro de Borrego al Huaxamole (lamb shank). It came resting in a very nicely seasoned pulla sauce. Pulla is a chile pepper native to Mexico. The shank came with black beans and long-grained Mexican rice. The black beans suggest to me a Carribean influence. I very much enjoyed my Mole de Piaxtla (mole chicken) which came with rice. I believe Piaxtla is a city in the interior state of Puebla. The chicken was tender and top quality. The sweet mole indeed did have a strong note of chocolate. And that leaves our dessert, Tres Leches (three milks). I always order Tres Leches when I see it on a menu. This delightful sponge cake rested in a delicious milk sauce. The squiggles of caramel atop the cake were made with goat milk. For beverages we ordered horchata and the much-beloved Coke from Mexico. For a place that used to be a former Michelin star Casa Enrique felt a bit lackluster but still remains one of the best outposts for Mexican cuisine in LIC. Although the bar isn't that high (in a place full of Asian cuisine) I appreciated the warm and attentive service. Casa Enrique's interior is relatively plain, with hard seats and simple wooden tables and features all of the classic Mexican dishes you would expect. We ate here for lunch and had a variety of items, including soup (which was a tad too salty), fried oysters (our favorite item on the menu) and chilaquiles rojos, which were tasty but as you'd expect. Service was decent and ambiance was elevated but nothing remarkable. The tostada was the most memorable dish, the gauc tasted like something I could whip up at home and the mole was too chocolately and lacked depth in my opinion. I've dined in at Casa Enrique multiple times and have also ordered takeout a couple of times since 2015ish. I've tried all three of their enchiladas, tacos (I agree with others on fish tacos, meh for the price $19), mole sauce with chicken, marinated roasted pork ribs, lamb shank, and even their desserts (try their tres leches... so good) and brunch items. Point is, I've eaten here enough times to confidently say - majority of their food is really good!! There's a reason Casa Enrique held a Michelin one-star for years, though I believe they lost it a few years ago. Regardless, their food is still good. If I could give one piece of advice... try to avoid takeout if you can with main entrees dish. Obviously taste just doesn't hold up unlike when its straight from the kitchen. read more

A lovely place overall, just a little too pricey for us to become "regulars". On this rainy day we found the A/C to be high, so our party of 4 was cold during the meal. We called the restaurant and came in at 5pm opening with no reservation. The staff was welcoming and gracious. 4 very good drinks, 4 delicious entree's; the dedication to high quality is clear. Warm tortillas for the table, delivered with our meals was a nice, greatly appreciated touch. We all enjoyed everything. By the time we were finished, the restaurant was filling up; pretty sure there were no more reservations available on this Thursday night. Given its notoriety and former Michelin star status (currently Michelin recommended), I was surprised by the minimal decor (I'm 99% sure the chairs are plastic) and casual vibe. But when the food came I understood. Start with the Albondigas en Chipotle, meatballs with an egg inside sitting in a soup of chipotle tomato sauce - sounds a little strange but I promise they are fantastic. Don't miss the Tostadas de Jaiba (crab) and the Enchiladas De Pollo Con Mole de Piaxtla - the mole is some of the best I've had in the city. If you're there for brunch (which leans more lunch in my opinion), get the Chilaquiles Rojos, which feature crispy chips actually holding up to a pool of salsa roja. Once you go you'll quickly understand how it became a neighborhood staple, and I'm sure you'll add it to your rotation (trek to LIC be damned). Came here with a group of friends on a bustling late Saturday evening for dinner, we were lucky to get seats (outside) because this place was very popular. The food itself was delicious: We shared some of the drinks, and I think all of the aguas frescas were refreshing and sweet--the tamarind tea, the horchata, and the jamaica. You can't go wrong with ordering any of them. Great choices of three mild, medium, and spicy sauces. The $18 guacamole was fresh and it came with perfectly-crisped chips. I also loved the taste of the $24 Ceviche de pescado, a fresh mix of fish and lime, and it also came with crispy chips, but was a bit surprised at the small size of the dish. I was less than impressed by the service. The waiters seemed to forget about our table outside and we were starving waiting for our food for at least 40 minutes since we sat down. Took a while to get any water. The staff were polite, but one spilled food on my dress when cleaning up my plate in front of me and offered no remorse. I learned later that this place is historic in becoming the only Queens restaurant on the 2020 Michelin Star guide, and had earned one Michelin star 2015-2021, and is the first Mexican restaurant in NY to earn a Michelin star. I highly commend their past accomplishments, but I think they could improve again on their service and their portions. A Mixed Experience at Casa Enrique Casa Enrique still brings big flavor, but the overall experience fell short of what we expected from a restaurant that once held a Michelin star. The highlights were clear. The food and drinks were excellent. I ordered La Tentadora and it was incredible. Sweet, smooth, and unique enough to make me want to take a bottle home. The catch? It was served in a glass barely larger than a shot. For a drink that good, a little more would have gone a long way. My wife enjoyed her margarita, but La Tentadora stole the show. The Mole de Piaxtla was a standout dish. Deep flavor, perfectly cooked dark meat. I would not change a thing. Just a heads-up if you are not a fan of dark meat. The Saudero was also excellent and full of bold flavor. Now for what could have gone better. The restaurant was loud. Not just busy loud but hard-to-talk loud. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were asked to wait outside. Not a huge deal. But once we were seated, the staff continued to wipe the table down around us without saying a word. No welcome. No explanation. It just felt awkward. We had submitted a note to let the staff know we were celebrating my wife's birthday. They confirmed it ahead of time, but it was never acknowledged during dinner. No simple "happy birthday," no dessert, no mention at all. It may seem small, but it took away from what could have been a special moment. A few other things to keep in mind. The restroom is located downstairs, which might be an issue if you have movement limitations. There are no warm towels offered either. Our server was not particularly friendly, which added to the sense that the service did not match the reputation. The food still delivers, but the details were missing. Casa Enrique may have lost its star, but it has not lost its flavor. It just needs to find its charm again. Maybe then this qualified as good mexican food in nyc, nowadays Casa Enrique is completely outclassed by a lot of other good mexican restaurants you can find here. Sat at the bar. The service was great. The atmosphere was bustling and the restaurant was full, which was encouraging. The bartender was friendly and attentive. The drinks were the best part of the meal. A margarita served in a wine glass seemed like an odd choice. the Mezcal old fashioned was appropriately smokey and boozey. The food is what shocked me into stupor. The beet and jicama salad was raw slivers of the two vegetables with some lime juice squeezed on top. No thought was given to texture, balance, mouthfeel. Literally raw vegetables, unevenly cut, dressed plainly in lime juice. The portion was also extremely small for the price. Shrimp cocktail was awful. 5 pieces of overcooked chalky shrimp with a salsa that had a cooked preserved tomato flavor reminiscent of ketchup. imagine if you took frozen shrimp from your local grocery store, defrosted them, and served them with a jar of Pace picante salsa. They were served with saltines too, which for a place that has fresh corn tortillas and chips felt very odd. Finally, the branzino (scratch that, they were out and we got sea bass instead) was a very small fish. the texture of the fish was mushy and had no flavor. the al pastor seasoning didn't make sense with something that delicate. the food was overall bizarre and shocking for the reputation of the restaurant. felt duped, disappointed, and hungry at the end of the meal despite having spent $120+. I had carne asada late last year in San Diego and really enjoyed it, so after seeing it in the menu I had to try it again. It was really delicious! Casa Enrique is hands down my favorite spot for Mexican food. I was feeling a little homesick and craving menudo, and when I saw they had pozole, I knew it was the perfect excuse to come back. It also didn't hurt that it's right next to my friend's apartment and made for the perfect stop before watching the UFC fights. They start you off with light, airy chicharrón chips and a trio of salsas, which already sets the tone. I sat at the bar (solo visit) and ordered my favorite drink, the Coco Mojo, perfect year-round, not overly sweet, and honestly a little dangerous. The bartenders were so sweet they even sent out chips and guac on the house. I like to mix the green salsa into the guac for an extra layer of flavor, as I feel the guac always needs a bit more salt and lemon. But that is definitely a palate bias I came specifically for the pozole, and wow. The broth is more like a rich consommé, almost sauce-like, deeply flavorful, and incredibly comforting. It truly felt like home. They usually serve it with chips, but I asked for warm tortillas with a side of butter to lather, I roll the tortilla and dip it in letting it absorb the flavor of the broth. Even though I was full, I couldn't skip dessert. The goat-milk tres leches is life changing, light, decadent, and such a beautiful twist on the classic. I can't recommend this place enough.
