Carnitas Burrito / Chips
Craig H.

Had the Carnitas burrito and some chips...it was pretty big and filled me up. But, that's as good as it gets. There was nothing special here, the burrito was lacking flavor, the hot sauce was not as good as Tapatio, the chips were nothing special as well. With all the options in DTLA and with Grand Central Market across the street, there is no need to return here. Note: This was part of my MealPal experience. Check out my Mealpal DTLA collection if you want to follow along. If you are scratching your head about MealPal...google it. The meal was not ready for pick-up, there is seating available, but it's not that inviting. I went to Grand Central Market instead.

There is a food snob in all of us. We turn up our noses at a dirty looking spot or some place that might look too beneath us. I think it's important to always have an open mind to discovering new spots, no matter what they look like on the surface. On a day I was feeling very ravenous, I wanted to try something new or untried near my office. I didn't want normal or anything chain based. I knew there was a string of Mexican food stores along Broadway that I usually scoff at when I pass by. Café India was one of those store fronts that I would usually dismiss on my way into work. However, I would always notice the window that looked into the kitchen area and I would see a little abuelita cooking away at some big pots. I really had no idea what I would be eating. I didn't know what to expect. I assumed I would be laid out later with some kind of stomach ailment from eating at a place with a low health rating. (I still don't recall the letter rating). I just pretended to be Tony Bourdain and dived right in. It was a pretty telling sign when I walked in and the place was sparse with seating and décor. Just some bare walls and linoleum floors. It made me grin to see a drunken guy already passed out at a table while another couple fed the jukebox and danced loudly in the middle of the eating area. Also charming was trying to order with the gal behind the counter, as well as the abuelita, who both did not speak ANY English. Ordering was basically made by pointing and nodding. I opted for a chicken mole and another item that just called out to me, chicharron pupusa. It was a nice surprise to receive some handmade corn tortilla chips with salsa. The salsa was toxic. It was basically some tapatio with some herbs in it. LOL. My food finally arrived, served up by the abuelita that prepared the meal. It made me smile. I pretended I was a guest at a house being served a home cooked meal. I sneaked a peek at the tortillas that came with my big plate. The tortillas were definitely hand made. I am not sure if they were made on the premise but you can tell they were had made. A nice touch that they were toasted and warm. The mole was very good. Better than I would have ever expected. I didn't expect a Rick Bayless mole, but this one rivaled any of the good moles I have had in the past. Nice sweetness and touches of spice you would want and expect in any good mole. I was completely confused how tender the chicken was. I admit I was nervous that the chicken was cooking in the pot all day or something? I still can't figure out why and how the chicken was that tender. The pupusa was very nice as well. A little larger and a little thicker than I am accustomed to but it still made me smile as I ate. You might find a more delicate pupusa at Saritas across the street at Grand Central Market or a Jaraga in KTown. I still enjoyed it very much. I was glad to have gone outside my range of eateries in my local area. It reminded me all of us should try out the places you might not normally try. You will discover some good authentic hand crafted food. Don't get me wrong. Its a hole in the wall. If you have a weak heart you may want to wimp out. But if you're in the area for a Devil's Night, Grand Performances, or pubcrawling on the Bar-Muda Triangle, then I would recommend checking it out.

Since I showed up without a picnic basket to the Devil's Night Drive-In, my date and I decided to grab a bite before the movie started. I loved how we were the only non-Hispanics in the restaurant. And I loved the impromptu dancing that occurred in the dining room. There wasn't a dance floor, but the music was blasting and the diners were a groovin'. I ordered two pupusas with chicharron and cheese and my date ordered two chicken tacos. The pupusas were phenomenally good! The chicken tacos were uber fresh and delicious and served on flour tortillas. However the language barrier posed a problem and I think it impeded me from paying with a credit card, so I had to blow some popcorn money to pay for dinner ($10). This place is a total hole in the wall and I really liked it. The restroom situation was atrocious so I have to deduct a star for that debacle. But when ya gotta go ya gotta go...

Karina A.

My boyfriend brought me here for the first time and now we're basically regulars. The pupusas are delicious and rich in flavor as well as the sauce and the curtido. I always get bean, cheese, and jalapeños and it's sooo delicious! I love cheese and they make their pupusas very cheesy. They have delicious Central American beer to go along with your pupusas. I love how lowkey this spot is and I hope it stays that way so they don't lose their touch, but I definitely recommend this spot ! Customer service is great too

Bottled Beers on Broadway. cold cerveza at cheap prices, when everything else around here wants a cover charge. If u want jus 1 or a dozen and can tolerate the loud salsa music on the jukebox step in for a cold one

Burrito- pen for scale

I tried Casa India through MealPal and got their vegan burrito. It had rice, beans, cucumber, pico de gallo, and avocado. The pico de gallo had a ton of liquid from that tomatoes and made the whole burrito soggy and overpowered the rest of the flavors. I did like the salsa that came with the chips and the staff was friendly but I would not come here again.

I don't think this is the right place for vegans. Cucumber on a burrito? They just don't get it.

Now when you pull up originally you might think, "am I in the right place" but once you park and get into the courtyard, it is LOVELY! Amazing ambience! There is a bocce set up, string lights. It is a little slice of oasis in the middle of the fashion district. The restaurant itself - beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely perfect in my book. Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. Unfortunately my friends had gone to Funke the night before so they were comparing the squash blossoms and Funke won out, but they still liked Dama's! Small plates were enough for the 3 of us. The service was quick and attentive. Parking was easy for us. I will definitely be back!

The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

We lucked out and snagged two seats at the bar on a Friday a little after 5 p.m., which ended up being perfect. It wasn't overly crowded but had just the right amount of energy. The drinks were excellent, high quality, beautifully presented, and definitely one of the highlights of the visit. We ordered the shrimp fajitas, which were delicious. The salsas were packed with flavor, and the fresh tortillas really elevated the dish. I'd recommend ordering the fajitas as an individual meal rather than sharing. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. It took quite a while to receive menus and be acknowledged. Our bartender seemed very disengaged, there was no greeting, no small talk, and the interaction felt pretty transactional. I even asked for his name, it was unique, but I completely forgot it. Something with a C or K? One of the other bartenders stopped by to check on us and was much more personable and welcoming. There also seemed to be an odd dynamic behind the bar. The staff didn't appear to interact much with one another, which created a slightly uncomfortable vibe. That said, the food, drinks, and atmosphere were strong enough that I'd absolutely give this place another shot. I won't let one service experience stop me from coming back to explore more of the menu.

(1) SURF CLAM CEVICHE #1- the acidity and creaminess and sweetness with very fresh seafood was so high quality. Plantains had a perfect amount of salt and crunch. The thinly sliced red onion was also perfect. It was very flavorful and probably better than Holbox-- if you have been. 10/10 (2) TUNA CARPACCIO YUCA TOSTADA #2- this was the best bite overall, it is definitely small and you finish fast but the flavors were just outstanding. The tuna itself was so fresh and it had a nice acidic flavor with the perfectly crunchy tostada!! 10/10 (3) KANPACHI CEVICHE #3 - a coconut predominant flavor with a mild acidity to it. It also pairs with plantains and they were fresh and perfectly crunchy. Was weary about the corn at first but honestly couldn't taste it and it was so good! (4) AFRO-CARIBBEAN SHRIMP DUMPLINGS #4- my bf loves shrimp and said this was very tasty. I'm not the biggest fan of shrimp but thought it was very creamy, fresh, had the classic shrimpy sweetness and a coconut creamy sauce to pair with it that when used on the rice tastes like a sweet milk rice. These were cooked perfectly. (5) fried chicken #5 - solid fried chicken and good crunch to it with the chicken being very well cooked but I cant say I was blown away by it, it has good flavor when dipped in the sauce which has a nice smokiness and acidity to it that makes it really tasty. However if I came again, I probably wouldn't order again. Lastly we ordered the toffee dessert which was classic and yummy. Nice shareable size. Overall, would return 100% and bring friends from out of town. Terrific flavors and service and definitely a top LA restaurant.
