OMG! This is the "real deal!" Today was my mom's birthday and when I come to town we usually end up at Las Comales or Joe's. Both are scene and a production mid-morning on a Sunday. I checked out the website and though the menu looked good. So we hopped in the car and drove to South Austin. We pulled up to an unassuming strip mall. I am hoping this is going to be good. We walk in and I can smell tortillas, menudo, barbacoa, carne asada, and baked goods. As we wait for our table (we are a party of 9) I can see hot plates, steaming with cooked meats, rice, beans, and tortillas. I am salivating. I see hot steaming bowls of menudo and caldo de camaron. We are sat and ordered chili con queso and guacamole. Both were wonderful. We ordered our entrees and every person was happy with what they ordered. Before we left I wanted to check out the bakery. I was thrilled with what I saw. Enclosed in glass cases were brilliant colors of sugar a top fluffy bread pastries of pink, brown, yellow, and cream. I see sugary churros and empanadas. I delight when I see the mother of all deserts....tres leches. I buy a slice since it is my mother's birthday. I take it back to the table and and give my mom the first bite. I must say i have not eaten here in over 10 years. 10 years ago i would have put 5 stars no question. Maybe 4 because their staff has never been to good on front of the house. As for the food. Just came back from Casa Maria. Alexandra's review is spot on, but I thought I'd add a few breakfast touches. First of all, this place is very friendly , very homey and very cheap for breakfast. I had a nice plate of chorizo con huevos for $4.25. It comes with very good beans and potatos and tortillas and great table salsa. I prefer corn tortillas, which were decent, but my dh got flour and they looked homemade! The fella got pork chop and eggs which looked good. He's had the ribeye with eggs before, which was yummy -- only $9.99. The breakfast tacos are ridiculously cheap. They also have machaca and eggs, although I didn't try it. I really don't mean to dis Tex-mex, but I really prefer more traditional Mexican fare and I can get it here, albeit they do have migas and flour tortillas, yada yada, for the Tex Mex lovers. On other weekend mornings, there have been mariachis, or, at least, a guy in a guayabera with a guitar with a very nice voice singing traditional Mexican songs and taking requests. Sometimes, in the mornings, this place is PACKED. I have no idea why we didn't have to wait this morning, but I was happy. And now I'm very full. Waitresses are very nice here. This was a solid unmemorable 3 stars. The first thing I noticed was the 5 different staff people who looked right at us and ignored us when we came in. No one said hi, just made eye contact and looked away. Would it have taken 2 seconds to say "Hi the hostess will be right back"? Chips and queso were not good. Pretty good, but no Trudy's. My better half and I had been craving queso, so we also ordered that. It wasn't the best... Luke warm and drying quickly. For entrees, we ordered the Fajitas a la Mexicana and the Chicken Flautas. The Fajitas were okay. The meat was tough and lacked any seasoning. We really enjoyed the Flautas though. Aside from how good the food tastes, I judge Mexican restaurants by how many interior dishes they have on their menu. Casa Maria has enchiladas suizas, enchiladas oaxaquenas, pozole, chicharrones, and carne tampiquena. Not bad, not bad. Both times I've eaten there, the food has been palatable enough, but it did not send rockets up my spine. It's the kind of place you go to because it's in your neighborhood and because you expect the food to be never less than satisfying. My boyfriend pointed out that its decor was cheesy not in a "we're trying to be so trendy, we're cheesy" way, but rather in the way that they were seriously attempting to give their interior some style. There were plastic grapes hanging from the ceilings - in fact, in such great quantities, I can't seem to remember much else about the decor. Now that it's the holiday season, they have golden grapes, however. We each had a shotglass of tequila, but in my desire to SIP it a la Mexicana, and not throw it back a la Americana, I asked for a companion shotglass of "sangrita." The hot sauce and their chips are like crack to me (and my husband)... i never eat the beans because they use bacon lard in them; But their rice is the standard Mexican rice with carrots. Average ticket for tacos, rice, tea and enchilada plate (husband) is under 20.00 dollars... $16.72 to be exact. They have a full Mexican bakery and bar.. Also the customer service is good and the restaurant is over all nice. The place has been around for a while and off 1st street.. So it has bars in the windows/doors. It's been hit or miss with Casa Maria in my experience. The food: spinach enchiladas are super delicious, not too cheesy and with lots o spinach, Soft tortillas flavorful corn. The chile relleno (cheese) was practically FLOATING on a pool of grease on the plate. I've never seen a dish served with more grease. It was as if the chef dumped a bottle of oil all over it just prior to serving. I was kinda blown away. The batter on the chile was soggy and weird. Don't order it. You can see the difference in the pictures. Was bland. I tried the Tortilla soup. A little greasy on the lips, but the shredded chicken was good. Avocado was a little under ripe. We went here with another couple who are regulars.I love locally owned mom and pop Tex-Mex places and this place really fit the bill. My wife really enjoyed her beef enchilada plate and a crispy taco. I felt a little adventurous for a gringo and ordered a three meet combination place of linguia, carne guisada, and barbacoa. All three meats were delicious as well. The ladies at the table also raved about their margaritas. My only complaint is the beer. First they don't have any drafts--only bottles. She works nearby, and she loved the fresh homemade tortillas and stuffed full tacos. We mostly come here for breakfast, though I think we've been here for dinner once. Good beans, horchata, and home-made tortillas are enough to put this place high on my list of favorite restaurants. Really diverse menu. Almost everything can be ordered as a meal or ala carte. Tacos are cheap and filling. They don't cover everything in cilantro like a lot of restaurants are starting to do. There is a panaderia (bakery) within the restaurant. The only thing I wish was better was the service. They're polite, but they always disappear for long periods of time, even when the place is empty. Best bang for your buck is the lunch special. Here the Enchiladas, the Pork in Verde sauce, the Picaddillo all remind me of home. A comforting and calming feeling everytime I eat something from here keeps me coming back for more.
