They give you a squirt bottle full of it, be careful! It is made by the owner weekly...and sometimes they sell it. This sauce is what took each dish 'over the top'. Casa Maya is an easy 5 minute walk to the Castillo de San Marcos fort on the water...very convenient! Places like this are what going out to eat is all about...pure bliss, no crap, artisan quality, utterly memorable. We came to this place based on the great food recommendations... And the waitress refused to serve the fish tacos. Since they're only on the lunch menu, I guess the kitchen must lock up all the fish starting at 1pm. Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but I would've loved this place if they had served fish tacos for dinner. I left after water and chips, mostly due to the disappointment of not getting what other reviewers recommended and partially to flee the waitress's smug attitude. PS- the expensive guac was small but tasty with the Habanero sauce. Found ourselves on St George street doing a little shopping. We decided on a late lunch and chose Casa Maya. We were seated inside at my wife's request as she seeker a reprive from the afternoon sun. It was just about 3:30 and we were informed that both the breakfast and the lunch menus were available. We found out at the end that they close at 3:30 to prep for dinner and reopened in the evening. Our waiter was very friendly and offered us some suggestions. Three of us decided to go with the highly recomended fish tacos. A veggie wrap was also ordered as well as ice teas. A special note, the ice tea was very good and perfectly seeped. Not weak like most. The veggie wrap i am told was fresh and tasty. With hummus, spinach, mango and signature dressing. The fish tacos were spot on. Fresh flakey mahi mahi, crisp lettuce, pico di galo and a chipolte sauce that had a nice zip to it. This was one of the worst experiences at a restaurant that I've ever had. It's very expensive for the small amount of food that they give you. You can easy spend $50 here and leave hungry. Their portions are ridiculously small. The kids meals come with rice and beans in containers that you usually get ketchup in at McDonald's, which leaves them with little to eat after polishing off the extra small quesadilla. It's as if the restaurant was portioning their food due to famine or something. They charge $4.50 for 12 chips and salsa. We also ate outside and the dumpster is on the other side of the wall so it smelled like a dumpster while we were eating. They added gratuity onto the bill so the waiter will get the same amount no matter how infrequently they show up. It was bad. Go somewhere nicer like Taco Bell. read more

Amazingly-authentic Mexican food, reminds me of eating in the Veracruz region (though they're from the Yucatan, I believe). Much as I hate to admit it, I guess my tastes in Mexican are a bit more on the americanized side. Went to this place in St. A based on yelp reviews and wasn't disappointed so much in the restaurant as I was in the fact that most everything on the menu was outside my comfort zone. I noticed other yelpers referred to the food as being amazingly-authentic. If that's the case then I guess I just am not ready for amazingly-authentic mexican food. One yelper recommended fish tacos - I would have been all over that but couldn't find anything nearly that normal on the menu. Found things like duck, lamb, and many things I hadn't heard of. If you are a seasoned Mexican foodie, you'll probably love this place, so go for it. But if you prefer things like fish tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, and so on - you better look elsewhere. read more

The carnitas was refried one too many times that it is tough and dry let alone tasteless . The rice is uncle Ben boil bags taste and the black beans must be out of a can. it is so watery there is no way it was cooked on a stove for any length of time. I have eaten in many restaurants over my 50+ years and have never paid for refills on drinks unless it was a bar! What added insult to injury is they charged us for extra tortillas also. The food was DELICIOUS. The experience was okay. I picked this restaurant because it had tempeh and vegan options. I ordered tempeh at 3:50pm and was told that they cannot make it, that it's only for dinner which doesn't start until 4. Nowhere on the menu or on their website does it say that tempeh is only available after 4. The server came back and said they would make it with tempeh but would charge me for the meat option. I also said no dairy - cheese or sour cream, and my beans came covered with cheese. My family however all loved their food, especially the guacamole. The tempeh itself was really good and well marinated. I figured I'd warn any vegans or people with dietary restrictions to maybe shy away from this restaurant. They gave me a hard time about ordering an item on their menu that they could clearly make, and did eventually. Not sure what that was about but not a great experience overall. read more

Amazing food. I am originally from the area and this is my favorite restaurant in downtown Saint Augustine. Last visit, we shared peel and eat shrimp, shrimp and octopus ceviche, and seafood paella. It was a gorgeous array of fresh flavors. The ceviche is so fresh and flavorful, and the peel and eat shrimp were huge and well seasoned. We shared the "seafood paella for two" between three people and couldn't even finish it all because it's HUGE. It has fish, chicken, chorizo, scallops, shrimp, crab legs, and clams, all with amazingly seasoned rice. Such a flavorful meal. In addition, the restaurant is in a beautiful historical building in the heart of downtown making for a lovely atmosphere for families, couples, or anyone else visiting or local. read more

My partner and our two friends stopped by Casa Maya for breakfast on a quiet Saturday morning. Having visited Casa Maya before for dinner, I was VERY excited to try their breakfast - and I wasn't let down. Upon arrival, we were met by a freindly host who sat us in the bar area because of how hot it was outside. Shortly thereafter, our waiter - forgot his name - took our drink order. We quickly ordered the Mayan Soup which we've had before. The waiter was VERY friendly and our first order came out quickly. The soups were out of this world. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican flavors - but this dish is so uniquely complex and good to the last drop of broth. In addition, the coffee was very good; definitely better then most restaurants in the area. My partner ordered the Sweet Potato Pancakes and loved them. Their texture was light and fluffy without being too heavy, and the flavor was just the right amount of sweet. She enjoyed the taste of them so much, she refused to use syrup. Shortly after receiving the dish, the waiter brought out a house made berry red wine reduction that he thought she might enjoy with the pancakes - and it was amazing. The perfect amount of tart to sweet, with a few chunks of fruit. I ordered the Los Huevos de Popeye - scrambled eggs with cherry tomatoes, spinach, and goat cheese. The eggs couldn't have been cooked more perfectly and the amount of spinach and tomatoes added a delicious layer that didn't over power the taste of the eggs. The addition of goat cheese was perfect - slightly tangy and creamy, but blending well with the rest of the dish. Although it took a little longer to get out check, the quality of the food has us talking well into the rest of the day. While going to college at Flagler, I would always came here for the awesome food and great service. I love everything about this place. The owners are from the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, sorry you're not going to get chimichangas or tamales. The food consists of lots of greens, slow-cooked meats, and yummy fish. After for years of going there, I never once saw anything fried on the menu (not your typical mexican joint.) Be sure to try their homemade guacamole, its the best in town. Also, they have the best tasting hot sauce in the world, if you can handle it. They don't advertise it, but if you ask for hot sauce, they bring out the homemade habanero pepper sauce. I always got the veggie wrap. It has mango, queso, beans, greens, avocado, and tomato. I always brought guests here, and no matter what they ordered it was always the best they've ever had. Horrible and didn't even eat the food. We walked in after seeing a menu on the street for this restaurant. It seemed like a genuine Mexican restaurant with a twist and all of the ratings seemed to pump it up. We got inside and the hostess seemed stressed but they weren't busy at all. The server got there and laid down menus with prices that include fajitas for $22. This didn't even match the menu we saw outside. We asked him (not being from the area) about the menu we saw outside and he got nervous and acted like we shouldn't have seen the menu. It was strange. I'm making another review of this place because clearly Casa Maya is afraid of criticism after reporting my old review as "culturally sensitive subjects in ways that reinforce negative stereotypes or make light of physical or sexual violence" HA! No hunnies it was the TRUTH. I went to this place two years ago with my mother. One positive note, beautiful place. HOWEVER, the service was TERRIBLE. We ordered, my mom had a mahi and I had fajitas. Once our food came, my mom didn't like the sauce on her mahi and asked if they can remove it. After an HOUR (which I highly doubt it takes an hour to remove sauce from fish or even to cook another plain mahi) my mom finally got her mahi after waiting waiting and eating half of my plate. Though she did eat a bit of the mahi, she didn't want to take the rest home. Our kind waiter asked if there was something wrong with the mahi and she politely said she wasn't hungry anymore and she didn't want to take it home, the manager then rudely argue with my mother and FORCED HER TO TAKE THE MAHI HOME WHEN SHE DIDNT WANT IT then quickly "checked out". We were super disappointed and offended that Casa Maya lets someone unprofessional like the manager talk to paying customers who weren't in the wrong and was actually being polite. So Casa Maya I dare you to report my review again, because I will gladly repost my experience again and again. And I'll gladly review on Facebook and Twitter and google and every where else :). Fantastic little place in an old little house in downtown St. Augustine! It's vegetarian-friendly, with a few choices, but right now I'm eating shrimp so there were even more options. We started with the chips and guacamole. The guac was fresh and tasty! Chips were average. Next we had the Queso Fundido. You MUST order this! Just do it! Order it! We didn't order it with any of the add-ons. We just ordered it as-is. That cheese was AMAZING! Seriously some of the best melted cheese EVER! We split an entre of chipotle rice with grilled shrimp on top of it. Holy moly! The chipotle sauce was not spicy (thankfully!), but had such a great smoky flavor almost like a BBQ sauce. Like other yelpers, I'm not sure if I could call the food here "Mayan". Granted, I've never had Mayan food before, but most of the dishes seemed to be Mexican or Cuban, and the only thing that came close was this "Aztec Pork" dish that one of my coworkers ordered. That said, Casa Maya is still a tiny hole in the wall that's worth a visit. My meal for the night was the Conchinita Pibil - pork marinated in orange juice and some other spices, with rice, beans, and plantains on the side. The pork was a bit on the dry side, but I could definitely taste the sourness of the juice coming through and the overall meaty and slightly sour combination worked for me. The sides were pretty good too, with the plantains notably not overly fried and not too sweet. I had a taste of my coworker's Aztec Pork dish, and the pork was very very tender and juicy, though part of me feels that it was (weirdly) a bit too soft. The 3 of us had a pitcher of sangria to go with the food, and that was quite good and fruity as well. Of note, we went on a Wednesday night around 1900ish, and the place was dead quiet -- not quite the "jam packed" experience that some of the reviews allude to. So if you want to avoid the crowds, then midweek would be a good bet. read more

A disappointing experience. The menu looked good but once inside we received a different menu, no tapas, we ordered a sangria which was by far the worst we have ever had. The waiter suggested two entres one red snapper which could have been any fish since the seasoning overwhelms the fish. The second entre was a chicken dish, it was ok but cold. What a great little place! So glad we finally got to try Casa Maya this week. We tried dining there twice before but there wasn't enough room for us. The dining room is very cozy- seats about 15? There is a patio outside but it is just too hot right now. My friend and I had the vegetarian wrap. Holy amazing! Mango, avocado, cucumber, tomato, goddess dressing, hummus, refried beans, etc. So delicious. They bring a habanero hot sauce to the table as well. It is extremely smoky and pretty hot. I enjoyed adding that to the wrap. My husband and another friend has the steak and fish tacos and they enjoyed them as well. Everything was so fresh and flavorful.
