We arrived on a Thursday evening in early June, and the restaurant wasn't quite half full, with tourism season still spinning up to full capacity. We were seated upstairs, which, like their whole space, gives the historic brick building centre stage. The menu a decent size for a place of Brickhouse's pedigree, with several apps and about a dozen mains. They were of the typical sort you'd expect to see in an up-casual restaurant, plus more seafood since you know, it's PEI. It's not particularly inventive or exciting, but there was still plenty of interesting options. I was feeling like some Island beef, so I opted for the short rib, while my other half went for the mac and cheese, with the gluten free noodles subbed in. The large chunk of boneless beef was ultra tender and juicy, and the velvety jus amplified that even more. The seasonal veg was a bit sparse and not especially exciting, but the crisp slices of roasted potato were a welcome addition to the plate. It's hard to have a bad mac and cheese, and Brickhouse passed with flying colours - plenty of cheesy goodness, and a nice bit of browning from some time under the broiler. A side salad of everything bagel-style Caesar salad could have used some more seasoning to make the famous bagel flavour more prominent in an already garlicky and savoury dish, but I appreciated the creative spin nonetheless. For dessert, we split the triple chocolate espresso cake. It presented really well, topped with a sliced strawberry and a dusting of confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder, in a pool of white chocolate pastry cream, but the execution wasn't quite up to the visuals. The cake was on the dense side, and wasn't moist enough to compensate, and the espresso flavour was MIA. Service was easy going and attentive. Brickhouse is lovely space in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, but the kitchen needs a little more attention to detail to truly stand out. It can be easy to coast by in a very touristy place, but people appreciate creativity and quality, no matter where they're from.

We waited more than an hour for our food. I ordered the chicken which was some of the driest chicken I ever had. I don't want to exaggerate, it just genuinely was so tough to eat, I only had half. The polenta was also so dry I couldn't finish. The mains the rest of my party got (a steak, mussels, and chateaubriand) were fine and the brussels sprouts were good. Learn from me, do not order the chicken.

I've eaten before at the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie, NY, but this was so much more amazing! I happened to find the restaurant by looking at google maps of Charlottetown. My mom wanted a restaurant by the water and I figured I should try the Culinary Institute in my own country. It's definitely on the expensive side, but worth every penny. I would definitely recommend going here if you're from out of town or for a nice occasion like an anniversary or birthday. We made a reservation, but the restaurant was about half full. It wasn't loud at all, my family and I could hear each other clearly without having to raise our voices, and it looks like the restaurant is newly renovated. Open kitchen, beautiful decor, and such a stunning view of the water! We ended up eating around sunset and it was absolutely gorgeous. All the waiters are current students so my dad chatted with ours about her program. I believe the menu changes seasonally, but all our dishes were simply superb. It did take a little while between courses, but we were in no rush and the view was stunning so we enjoyed it. I started with the foie gras torchon, and it was divine. I love foie gras but I had recently had some mediocre one in Toronto, so I was hesitant to try this one. At my mom's urging I ordered it and thank god I did! The foie gras melted in my mouth like butter. My family also shared the smoked seafood plate, there were oysters and other types of seafood along with bread. You could really taste the smoke, even in the bread. It was amazing. My dad also started with the mussels, which were great. My mom got a small plate of lobster (she doesn't eat that much), and it was great and the perfect size for her! I ate halibut as the main course, which was great, very flavourful and I liked the fiddleheads! My dad had lobster risotto, which was tasty and not too salty. We finished with a moccachino flavoured creme brule, which was super tasty. It really tasted like a moccachino. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Then we ordered cod cheeks, lobster ravioli, linguine with beef. All three were delicious. I don't usually order salmon back in the states, but given all the fresh seafood here, we ordered wild caught Atlantic salmon, totally delicious! I finished the evening with creme brûlée, yummy! I would go back. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for good food in the area, but reservations are suggested since it can fill up.
