While on the Island for a few days, one of my dinner targets was Brickhouse. My wife and I weren't able to make it the last time we were in town, but this time it was front of mind. We arrived on a Thursday evening in early June, and the restaurant wasn't quite half full, with tourism season still spinning up to full capacity. We were seated upstairs, which, like their whole space, gives the historic brick building centre stage. The menu a decent size for a place of Brickhouse's pedigree, with several apps and about a dozen mains. They were of the typical sort you'd expect to see in an up-casual restaurant, plus more seafood since you know, it's PEI. It's not particularly inventive or exciting, but there was still plenty of interesting options. I was feeling like some Island beef, so I opted for the short rib, while my other half went for the mac and cheese, with the gluten free noodles subbed in. The large chunk of boneless beef was ultra tender and juicy, and the velvety jus amplified that even more. The seasonal veg was a bit sparse and not especially exciting, but the crisp slices of roasted potato were a welcome addition to the plate. It's hard to have a bad mac and cheese, and Brickhouse passed with flying colours - plenty of cheesy goodness, and a nice bit of browning from some time under the broiler. A side salad of everything bagel-style Caesar salad could have used some more seasoning to make the famous bagel flavour more prominent in an already garlicky and savoury dish, but I appreciated the creative spin nonetheless. For dessert, we split the triple chocolate espresso cake. It presented really well, topped with a sliced strawberry and a dusting of confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder, in a pool of white chocolate pastry cream, but the execution wasn't quite up to the visuals. The cake was on the dense side, and wasn't moist enough to compensate, and the espresso flavour was MIA. Service was easy going and attentive. Brickhouse is lovely space in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, but the kitchen needs a little more attention to detail to truly stand out. It can be easy to coast by in a very touristy place, but people appreciate creativity and quality, no matter where they're from. read more

At first, I didn't even know this place would be a fancy restaurant, I had 30 bucks and an empty stomach, I mean, I had nothing better to do, I was just wearing my normal clothes I was directed to a table right away without even booking a reservation, I understand that that was probably a rare occurrence, but that's not the point, after I was guided to my table I was able to order pretty quickly, four minutes before I got my food The waitress gave me a free drink. Because the bartender had accidentally made an extra, and it was actually pretty delicious, then my food arrived and it was way better than I expected, I ordered the stack burger, after I ate my food, I got the check and left tip, I will definitely be revisiting this restaurant, amazing food, amazing service, there is not one bad thing that I can name about my experience! read more

This is one of those it's not a 3 but it's definitely not a 4, so ... The place itself looks great - the staff all young and friendly but the food was just ok. There were 4 of us and except for the Mussels all of our picks were chosen from the 'share' menu. We had the Onion dip, the Salt Cod Croquets, Beef Tartare, and the Char Siu Pork Dumplings. Most of these, although good, needed seasoning and adding salt at the table can only do so much. This was also the comment about the Mussels in Cream and Garlic sauce. (There was garlic in the sauce?) If you're in the area I'd still give it a try. Most other reviewers liked it more than we did. read more

We went to have dinner and it was pretty packed. The waiter suggested some Tidal Bay to start with (delish) and the Brussels sprouts, rich in flavors with tasty pieces of pork/pancetta. I then had scallops with pork belly and green beans, what a great mix! The pork belly piece was thick and crunchy but melt in your mouth! The scallops were cooked to perfection and tasted fresh. Brickhouse is such a fun place to grab some drinks and food with people. I have been in both the main restaurant which is slightly more upscale and Marc's lounge which is a really cool and cozy vibe on the third floor loft, same menu but slightly more causal yet intimate setting. Great drink menu and lovely food choices. Adore the calamari here and the bacon jalapeño dip too. The harvest salad is one of my favourite salads ever that you can order as your choice of side with no upcharge too! Fresh greens, quinoa, candied walnuts, roasted apples, and mustard maple dressing. The fries are also delightful here especially in addition to the stack burger or chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich is prob my favourite thing to order, grilled juicy chicken thigh on a fresh and soft toasted ciabatta with a garlic aioli, red cabbage slaw, arugula, and pickled pear, Brick house is an awesome place to grab some nosh in Charlottetown with a local brew or fancy drink. read more

We didn't realize that it would be so Popular on a Tuesday night so we did not make reservations. Fortunately there was seating at the bar where we served by a very nice bartender. We had many shared plates: beef cappaciao, PEI mussels, jalepeno cheddAr cheese dip, lobster wontons and French fries. Everything was very good and served promptly. It was a good choice. read more

What a great find on the streets of Charlottetown! We came during off season and there were a lot of establishments closed for the season. Thankfully not Brickhouse! We sat upstairs in a booth and immediately loved the vibe of the place. Brady was our waiter for the evening and he was so friendly and knowledgeable about all things on the menu but also all things Charlottetown. My daughter had the chicken sandwich and a Shirley temple - two thumbs up from her! We started with fresh bread, lobster wontons and baked oysters - all three were delicious. My husband had the seafood chowder and he said it was the best he'd ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed my scallops with orichiette - the flavors in the pesto sauce and vegetables were amazing, the scallops literally melted in my mouth! So delicious! Such a great evening! We had a great meal dinner here on our first night in Charlottetown on our PEI vacation. I don't normally comment much on the decor of restaurants, but I have to in this case. It was like eating inside of a modern art gallery. So cool! Beautiful lighting, paintings, and overall ambiance. Very romantic too, with candles on each table. Service was friendly and we were able to get a table pretty quickly! The food was excellent. We started with PEI mussels ($14) in a light lime broth. So, so fresh. For dinner my husband had the Atlantic salmon in a pomegranate sauce ($24) and I was able to try some. Again, one of the freshest salmon I've tasted. I actually had an appetizer for dinner, the seafood chowder ($16). It was very thick and creamy (I know some people prefer a lighter broth but I liked it) and chock full of potatoes and shellfish. The addition of bacon gave it a nice, subtle smoky flavor too. All of the dishes here are well executed and prepared artfully. read more

Great location near the confederation centre and walking distance from the Delta. We went on a Friday eve and it wasn't too busy at around 5pm. The service was pretty good but my veg burger took a bit longer than the other meals to come out. The food was not bad but the veg burger (no bun) was kind of bland and mushy. The other meals were fine. We sat on the lower level but there was an upper level with a bar. Apparently it gets very busy later at night. read more

I loved the ambiance of this place and the service was pretty nice too. Ordered Buffalo Mac and Cheese and Chicken and waffles. Buffalo Mac and Cheese is the best Mac and Cheese we have ever had in Canada, it was very creamy and buffalo chicken was very flavourful and a nice addition. Stopped here due to great reviews on yelp. Arrived for a late lunch mid-week so the place was pretty quiet. We split a half-litre of a Canadian Riesling. We obvy had the mussels and frites, which was a sizeable portion for lunch, with lots of tasty mussels and a huge pile of fries. We also split the haddock tacos, which were breaded with a tempura batter so they were not too heavy. They were some of the best fish tacos we've ever had (and we've had our fair few). We accompanied that with the Caesar salad, which was also delicious! We left very full and satisfied! read more

The fish tacos and the chowder are a must order. The fish tacos have a nice flavour of cumin and lime. The fish is not heavily battered which is nice. I do have my go to place in Vancouver, BC for fish tacos but these tacos hands down beat them. The chowder now is mouth-watering delicious. The service was great and sitting at the chef table which we thought was the bar was a hoot with the kitchen staff. They even gave us an amuse bouche while we waited!! read more

Don't skip this restaurant! My husband and I went for dinner here on our last night in Charlottetown. We're so glad we did! You have to try the Sydney Street Storm cocktail; it's spicy and sweet taste had us ordering more than one and wishing we had the recipe. We were disappointed that they were out of the lobster hush puppies but at the waitresses recommendation we ordered the calamari instead. It was tender, flavorful and a good second choice. I had the pesto linguini with scallops, which was a tad under seasoned, but quickly remedied by some salt. The scallops were juicy and seared nicely. My husband had the 2016 Burger Love winner, "The Brickanator". It was a wonderful burger but as always, he was disappointed that they were unable to cook the burger to order. Apparently it's quite rare that Canada can grind their own beef at the restaurant so that it can be cooked anything but well done. For dessert we had the chocolate almond cake with a wine sherbet. It was decadent and could easily feed 4 people to satisfaction. We ended up taking half back to our vacation rental because it was too rich to finish. Top-notch all around. From the hostess and server to the chef and sous chef, staff was cheerful, professional and attentive. The plating and presentation of each of our plates was perfect. Hot food was hot. Cold was cold. I ordered the PEI blue mussels which were served paired with Spanish olives - a nice combination. The Caesar was crisp and perfect. Elsewhere around the table, we ordered the Brick Mac Burger, the Lobster Mac n' Cheese, and the Scallop special. The Brickhouse had stylish décor and a nice atmosphere, with two floors and an outdoor patio. I came here with my parents and we enjoyed the food. I would recommend the seafood chowder. It was delicious and had generous amounts of seafood in it. The cauliflower soup was not what I expected; it was not too creamy and had more of an earthy turmeric taste. The lobster roll was average. The yakisoba noodles were yummy and had a nice, slightly firm texture. The service was satisfactory, not great. Our waitress was caught up in conversation with another table for a long time, so the manager had to come by and take our orders. The manager, however, was great and very pleasant. read more

If you are going to this restaurant because of their advertised "Meet Your Needs" menu, be aware that it doesn't actually exist. We chose the restaurant because one of our party is vegan and the Meet Your Needs menu seemed perfect, but we were disappointed to find out when we asked that they must've discontinued it even though it is still advertised on their website. The food was good as long as you like a strong taste of lemon, and the atmosphere was incredible. The service was not particularly good; I hope the waiter was just having a bad day because he made it seem like taking our food orders was a personal affront. We were willing to get past the fact that some of our orders were wrong (we ate the food even though it was incorrect), but it was frustrating that he continued to be so rude to us. We won't be returning since it seemed clear that the staff gets upset when they have customers, and we wouldn't want to make them unhappy. read more

Decided to go here for breakfast with my family and boy was it worth the walk! The wait times were short and the staff were incredibly nice! The menu while it is short and simple, has something for everyone on it. They had a dish for that special someone with a sweet tooth, or a dish for someone who wants something savoury. The Brick Breakfast seemed to be a family favourite and left everyone happy and full! I'm not one for the "traditional" breakfast, but this one was amazing! While the large plate full of eggs, bacon, sausage, etc may look a little thrown together, it's delicious and the taste and quality makes up for any presentation flaws! My boyfriend and I absolutely loved this place! I ordered the crab cakes with house salad and my boyfriend had the soup of the day, autumn chowder. The crab cakes were delicious!! I had been craving crab since we got to the east coast and this did not disappoint. My boyfriend devoured the house salad with beets, goat cheese, radishes and a cranberry vinaigrette, he said it was the best house salad he ever had. The autumn chowder was great, but not as amazing as the other items. The biscuit it came with though was very flavourful and perfect for dipping. Service was fantastic, one girl working the whole restaurant and she was pretty slammed but did a great job! We also loved the Beach Chair Radler beverages, he had the orange and I had the watermelon. Stopped in for a late-ish light dinner and my wife and I feel we hit the jackpot here. Had the fish tacos and the duck confit sliders. Both were excellent, but the sliders we're terrific. We chose to visit Daniel Brenan's Brickhouse for an anniversary dinner. I mistakenly thought that the restaurant had changed hands since being Off Broadway, but the premises are still owned and run by the Murphys, a Charlottetown family who owns many of the city's eateries. In fact, as you sit in the restaurant, you look across the street into two other restaurants owned by the same family. The thing I find with the Murphy restaurants is often the vision is greater than the execution which I usually find mediocre. The Brickhouse is positioned as a player in the local ingredient/artisanal food market with a lot of emphasis on the young chef who creates innovative dishes featuring PEI ingredients. While it has a casual environment on the first two floors of the old brick building, the prices are certainly high end with apps in the $7 to $15 range and mains priced from $22 to $35. For an app, I ordered a greens and beet salad which was good, but a bit heavy on the dressing. My husband ordered the attractively presented fishcakes served with an aioli cream sauce. The cream gave the somewhat bland deepfried cakes some flavour. For mains, we both ordered the 8 oz. Island beef tenderloin at $35. The meat was delicious although mine was a bit more rare than medium rare would imply. The fries were just alright and the accompanying fresh market vegetables were a bit puzzling--corn which I'm not sure is in season here yet, fava beans and greens spinach sautéed in a sauce that tasted a bit like parmesan. The mix of flavours was too much for me and I found myself thinking less is more when it comes to fresh vegetables. The attentive and eager service didn't match the high end prices. For the main and dessert courses, our food was served first before our friendly server noticed we were missing cutlery. She would sprint downstairs to retrieve cutlery while we gazed at our food. We also had to ask to see a dessert menu (no mention of the dessert specials featuring local ingredients, rhubarb pie and strawberry shortcake we saw advertised on the way out that I am sure would have beaten the rather bland and less than artisanal tasting flourless chocolate torte and sweet and sour chocolate cake that we shared) and she didn't ask if we wanted tea or coffee. Yet, she rather promptly delivered the cheque in an envelope marked "The Damage" while we were still finishing our wine. Despite the mediocrity, I was glad we gave this newish eatery a try. At four months old, the Brickhouse seems to be a work in a progress. It seems to be trying to be all things to all people which results in a mediocre experience for everyone. If you have high-end prices, you can present a casual, high-end experience with food that is artisanal and flavourful with a matching level of service. On a side note, one of the stranger parts of our meal was the delivery of the wine list on a tablet device. While technology is impressive, sometimes it's easier just to read a piece of paper rather than navigating page after page of details on an iPad. We had a pleasant enough evening but for the price ($175+ with a bottle of wine and tip), next time I'd visit Lot 30, another Charlottetown restaurant focused on local food. read more

We went to the Brickhouse Kitchen for dinner when we were in Charlottes town. The service was quite slow, not a problem if you got more than an hour to spare. The food finally arrived after 40 minutes only after we remind our friendly waiter that we only got 20 minutes to and would like everything to go. Our family ordered 4 things and I'm unimpressed with 3 out of the 4 items. 1. Oyster: fresh, briny oysters served with cocktail sauce. Best dish of the bunch 2. Crab cake: unimpressive. The flavour is alright but there were too much veggies and fillers it almost like a crab croquettes. I was hoping for a Japanese inspired crab cake with a nice and light tempura shell but oh well. 3. Brickhouse green: it's your everyday roasted beets and goat cheese salad. The favour is balanced but probably could use a bit a crunch- nuts, crouton, something. 4. Seafood bowl: biggest disappointment of the night. The only redeeming thing is that the shrimp and fish were succulent. The scallop was overcooked and too tough. Two of the mussels were undercooked and we couldn't get them open. The sauce was on the thicker side. I don't mind salt but i do find it to be on the saltier side. It didn't come with the promised crostata which would have helped. I would have sent this back but we were in such a rush. read more

The brickhouse had a veggie burger and some veggie flatbreads on the menu, so we decided to give it a go. We ordered takeout, with an apple pie desert. The meal was okay. The ricotta flatbread was a little soggy and thick, but the toppings were good. The veggie burger was mushy but tasty. Everything was just a little on the bland side - no kapow! burst of seasoning or flavor, really. My husband picked up the food and said the ambiance in the place was great. The apple pice was disappointing. It was very dough-y with not a lot of taste :( read more
