Worst meal ever. The "chef" has no clue how to season food. The only thing we enjoyed was the bread and the pimento asiago cheese appetizer. Onion soup...no flavor. Caesar salad...no flavor. Seafood with pocket pasta and piatto di mare....no flavor. Veal marsala....meat was dry and tough and NO FLAVOR. Had the veal taken off the bill. NEVER RETURNING. Frozen food is better! read more

Recently dined here for my birthday. We started out with the bruschetta, which was excellent. I loved how the cheese was melted onto the bread. For my entree I had the "pasta purses". These were okay. The noodles were decent, but the sauce threw me off. I didn't care for the spices in it. My date had the spinach lasagna which was delicious! We were so excited to go to Casa Rustica one more time before moving our daughter out of Boone. I have never been so disappointed!!! We were seated in the same booth we sat in the first time when we came to visit our daughter in her freshman year at App State. Two daughters have attended college here in the last six years and we have shared special memories in this restaurant and loved every meal we have ever had there...until tonight. We had been looking forward to having pasta all week. We ordered vodka sauce. What we received was tomatoes over pasta that had a bitter taste. I thought they had made a mistake and given us the wrong sauce, but the vodka she brought us to replace the bitter sauce was the same! The bacon or pancetta in it tasted rancid. I had an upset stomach before we arrived back at the apartment minutes after leaving. We thought we were going to miss this place, but not after tonight! If I could leave 0 stars I would.... the restaurant itself is hardly ever open and when they are the food is way overpriced for what it is and it tastes frozen. Ate here twice and it never changed. This was my second and LAST TIME I will ever give this place the benefit of doubt. I overheard the owner or manager (a white male) calling one of their black employees the N word!!!!! I've actually been here twice, and each time, the food is fine, but I come back because of the spectacular live jazz on Thursday nights! This last time, I had the Chicken Picatta (with sautéed capers in a fresh lemon white wine sauce), and it had an odd flavor...not altogether unpleasant, but certainly not what I was used to. Great all around place for a meal in Boone. I went for a business dinner and was really impressed by the excellent service, attentive but not invasive. Aubrey was the best! What a surprise, they had live jazz music! This would be a good place for a romantic dinner as well! Drinks were great and everyone loved their food. My friends and I were on a ski trip on Appalachian Mountain, just a little ways away and we had heard this place was great. EH, only ok. The restaurant is cute inside and really makes you feel like you are in a ski lodge. The bread and salad dressings were REALLY good. But my meal...I think I ordered the wrong thing. I ordered a chicken dish, expecting the chicken to be thick like a breast of chicken. It was like a really thin filet....with some wine on it with noodles. Wish I ordered something else. My date got the steak and it was really good. We ordered tiramisu for dessert and it was literally jello pudding with lady fingers. I missed Pssghetti's.... We were excited to find a well reviewed place after a day at Tweetsie Railroad, but this restaurant fell short. The bread was the highlight of my meal (*it was soooo good). My White Russian was also very tasty. My kids raviolis were tasty. The French onion soup was average. The cheese toast was burnt and didn't cover the top. The cup was tall and not wide. For us, the best part of French onion soup is the cheese and bread. Because it was a tall cup and the bread didn't even cover the width of the cup, it wasn't as good as it could have been (even if you ignore that our bread was burnt). This soup was lacking. My husband described his chicken parm as bland. My pasta purses with marinara and added shrimp weren't good. I told the waiter mine wasn't good and then asked about everyone else's, and they were okay eating their food. My waiter didn't offer to do anything or ask for an explanation. When he came around and asked if we wanted boxes, I told him I didn't want one because (again) I didn't care for my meal. He took my full plate. He didn't follow up at all. One of my friends ordered a chicken special and liked it. The other ordered seafood (or just shrimp?) scampi. I asked her how it was and she replied that if you like lemon and tons of garlic it was very good. We got dessert. It was average chocolate cake. My friend liked her Oreo covered ice cream dish. Our service was very slow, though we did appreciate the waiter bringing the kids' meals with our soup and salads. We won't be returning. We were hoping this would be our place when we come in Boone. Really good food! After not having any reservations at a restaurant we previously wanted to go to, we ended up here. It couldn't have turned out any better! We found a gem of a restaurant! The waiter was extremely friendly and helpful! I wish every waiter and waitress were like him. For the appetizers, I ordered the mussels marinara! Great choice! My friends ordered the stuffed mushroom caps and they loved it! I ordered the shrimp scampi with linguine. It was probably one of the best shrimp scampi I've ever had! My boyfriend and the other couple ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, Piatto do mare, and a special: stuffed chicken with prosciutto. Everything tasted amazing! Also, for each entree, you could choose a soup or salad. I ordered a salad. Everybody else ordered a soup, which they seemed to love. For dessert, I had the home made brownie....loved! This is the best Italian restaurant in Boone hands down. You won't leave this place unhappy. They're dining and cuisine is outstanding.

I've eaten here several times. The quality of food is uneven in my experience; on my most recent visit I ordered pasta with "primavera vegetables," which are clearly listed on the menu as "onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli and snap peas" and received a plate on which the only vegetables were summer squash and zucchini - and these were poorly cooked. Servings are sometimes huge and sometimes barely adequate, even for simple pasta dishes, which is a bit insulting considering the prices. Service is also uneven, usually adequate but I'd never call it excellent. On this last visit empty water glasses never got filled and the server seemed put out when we asked her to bring sugar for coffee, as if this were a strange request. We then waited almost 5 minutes for her to bring it. Again, you'd expect more from a place that's on the upscale side in terms of ambience and prices. They almost always have live music that is just fantastic, but I think they need to step up their game in terms of both service and food quality. Basil's, just down the street, is not as upscale and does not have the same selection, but overall beats Casa Rustica in both price and quality of food. read more

We selected Casa Rustica for our rehearsal dinner before my wedding. Just got back from our tasting, and, boy, we were elated by the food and service. We started with a house Chianti, very well balanced, so we continued with several pours. The spinach salad special was a generous portion and full of flavor, hey, who doesn't love bacon on a salad? We also tasted the prosciutto and melon, a very refreshing appetizer. And we tried the fried zucchini and mushrooms, which have a really nice beer batter that's light and complementary to the veggies. For our main courses, we were blown away by the Chicken Saltimbocco, Spinach Lasagna, and the Shrimp Alla Vodka. Just typing that, made my mouth water. I'd say the Saltimbocco was our sleeper favorite. The Spinach Lasagna was very fresh and let the homemade marinara do its song and dance. And the sauce on the alla Vodka is complex and flavorful, and kept my tastebuds wanting more. The waitstaff seemed like college kids from Appalachian State. They were on the ball and eager to hustle to make that cash. All in all, I'd say Casa Rustica is a great choice if you're looking for fresh ingredients treated with care in a friendly dining atmosphere. read more

My wife and I had taken a quick mountain getaway and we're looking for local places to eat. This one had a lot of positive reviews, but we felt otherwise after dining there. Very mediocre experience overall. Our server was great; the atmosphere is an odd mashup of log cabin, stereotypical Italian decor, unrelated 20 year old paintings, and dark heavy old buffet furniture. Strange feeling. The food was unremarkable -- honestly in the middle of not bad and not good. It reminded us of a place you would see appearing on Kitchen Nightmares -- not because of terrible food, but because of the restaurant itself. Overall, very good experience. We had dinner on a Sunday night around 7pm. We were seated right away. The name fits, because it's definitely a "rustic" atmosphere, but not in a bad way. Just a little over-priced for what you get. I had the NY Strip & my wife, whom is pescatarian (only eats fish, no other meats), had the salmon w/ veggie lasagna. Everything tasted perfect & was cooked perfectly. Again, I would say just a little over priced. They're trying to pull off a "fine dining" experience, but it falls just a little short of that. In on a cold, slow Tuesday night. Seated and attended to quickly. Ordered linguine with marinara sauce, Italian sausage, peppers, and onions, plus, Caesar salad. Plus, Chanti special of the night. Salad dressing had very little taste. Not sure what was missing, but the normal tartness of a Caesar dressing was absent. Bread provided prior to the entree was very good; served with oil and vinegar. Entree was nothing special and suffered from too much marinara sauce. Sausage was tasteless, peppers and onions undercooked. This was a shame because the pasta was extremely good. With less sauce and better prepared toppings, this could have been an excellent meal. Went here while visiting some friends from the area. Food was average, nobody had complaints. The 5 of us arrived shortly after they opened and we were sat alone in the back room, which we were perfectly okay with. Soon after being sat though and group was sat directly behind us, when there was a large table on the other end of this room, with 3 kids. One of the kids was consistently screaming which echoed throughout the room. Another table asked to be moved, but we were already eating. We informed the manager politely that they should probably wait to sit anyone else back there. Our waitress came out and said they would be giving all of us free desert and told us the list: tiramisu, cheesecake, and cannolis. We ordered 4 tiramisu and a cheesecake to go, clearly very agitated by the screaming child. It took another 10 minutes for the manager to come out and tell us that the tiramisu hadn't set yet, so we should all 5 get cheesecake. Another 10 minutes pass and we were informed by another manager that there was only ONE cheesecake left! At this point we didn't even want desert but thought that 4 cannolis and the one slice would come out quickly so we continued to wait with the screaming child. Finally, after 30 minutes of waiting we were brought out desert and we all but ran out of the restaurant. Manager said there was 5 cannolis anyway, even though we asked for 4, but guess what.... still only 4 cannolis. A nice gesture on there part turned out to be a absolutely ridiculous nightmare. They could have just comped our drinks or appetizers, considering we all spent a pretty penny here. There was no senses of urgency all night but even more so when we were clearly ready to go. If you wanna give your kids pricey pasta come here. I have been to this place twice with high expectations because people rave it's the best Italian in Boone. Not to be a jerk but it's not. The staff was good and the atmosphere was very cozy but the food was not up to par. I was highly disappointed that the appetizers tasted like cheap fried food and maybe that's my fault getting calamari and mozzarella sticks at an Italian restaurant. My pasta was swimming in sauce and I don't know if the clams are old or just sat in the wine too long but something was off. Very little flavor in everything. I know it's harsh but we paid a good amount of money here for food that was not worth the price. read more

We returned to Casa Rustica for the first time since Covid and we are glad that we did. The staff and servers and patrons took safety and masking seriously. The food was excellent as usual and came out quickly. We would like to give a shout-out to our server, Jack. He was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and made a great beer suggestion! We got the feeling that they may have been short on staff and we noticed Jack working not only his own tables but helping out with others as well! My husband and I are foodies and enjoy our cocktails..... we loved this place. Nothing fancy but extensive Italian selections and great service! We ate at the bar by choice (our usual preference) and so glad we did because we got to chat both nights with Logan, the bartender, and the general manager, Kristy. Logan, a graduate student at App State, was an incredible mixologist. He was also very knowledgeable about the food and wine. Logan was engaging (and patient) with us as we interrogated him about the food, drinks and his personal life. Kristy was also very accommodating and super friendly! If you're looking for a reasonably priced restaurant, great service, extensive choices and satisfying food, plus absolutely some of the best cocktails I've ever had, then this is your place.
