If you're looking for a dark bar decorated with vintage velvet titty art that serves up a mighty mean greyhound, Casanova Lounge is exactly the place for you. I'd say no frills but those velvet pieces of art are just too 'extra' to be considered anything but. And how many dive bars do you know that juice their grapefruits old school style at the bar? They've got personality, they've got questionable class, and they've certainly got style. Short and rude staff, the space didn't seem clean, everything we touched was sticky including the carpet. So gross. Drinks were super basic. Don't bother asking for any classic cocktail. Someone mentioned the owner was there sitting by us. And he was bad mouthing all his neighbors. Not a good look. Won't be back. read more

Casanova is a chill dive bar with reasonably priced drinks. I was a fan of how dark it is inside, complete with eclectic decor, interesting paintings, and funky light fixtures that give it a vintage feel. Our group happened to come in during happy hour so our drinks ranged from $6-8. The bartender was chill and I liked her vibe. She was also quick to serve customers so the bar never got too crowded. There are plenty of comfy couches and seating areas no matter your group size. read more

The ambiance and chill eccentric vibe is what you're paying for. They have chandeliers of all shapes and sizes and paintings of naked women draped in silk sheets everywhere paired with suede seating. The Cadillac margaritas are pretty much the only thing I order otherwise they aren't the best mixologists here. We mostly end our chill nights here. read more

Before you even consider checking this bar out, be forewarned that Valencia is hipster central. If that's a problem for you, run back to Walnut Creek. (Sick burn!) However, if that's not a problem and you enjoy $1.50 PBR pints and $6 PBR pitchers at Happy Hour (4-7pm, bitches!), cool and random music coming from the jukebox, and 70s pornish velvet paintings of naked ladies (really, who doesn't?), then the Casanova Lounge is the right place for you. The couches are awesome, the decor is disarming, amusing, and kind of indulgent all at once, and the bartenders are fun, if a little loopy. It's not overtly pretentious, in spite of the street it's on, and, as with so many hipster-infused things and places, if one can shed one's prejudice, it's actually a really awesome, fun, cool bar. I prefer to get weekday happy hour drinks here, when it's a little hoppin', but I still have a chance of snagging a couch or even a spot in the wikid little "VIP" alcove in the back (I loves to sit under that one naked lady velvet painting, oh yeah). On weekends, it's very crowded and standing room only, and that isn't really what I'm looking for in a place called a "lounge"--or in any bar, for that matter. But the Casanova is still a fun, cool little spot. That said, I'm more than happy to brave the inevitable headache from drinking happy hour draft PBR, which, for the price, is worth the immediate regret that you feel in your mouth and brain. $6 pitchers don't make it taste any better, and, in true hipster style, the Casanova is too good for Bud Light, which is clearly superior to PBR (as is everything this side of Natty Ice and Steel Reserve), but proud of their Pabst. Go figure. This would be a 5-star place if it weren't for the excessive crowding that almost always occurs, as well as the fact that they've recently painted over all of the really cool graffiti in the bathroom, which has long been one of my favorite features of this bar. read more

Wow. I had fun at a hipster bar? Really? It's true. I really dig this place and, if I lived in SF, I would come here a lot. The music is awesome. It's like Dusty Springfield told her bff's to dj her house party after all the squares left. Every track made me feel as though I was in an early-era Tarantino movie. The low red lights/paint added to my experience. Rather than making me feel I should be looking out for backwards-speaking dwarfs, I felt like I was in the mood for a good dose of cool. It is a divey bar, so there are some precautions you should take. 1.) drink your alcohol out of bottles. I don't care what kind of drink specials you offer, I am a crazy-@ss germaphobe. I'm not trusting my lips to your glass washing. It's nothing personal. Bottle choices: cider and Pacifico. I drank Pacifico. If I were more secure in my manhood, I would have had the cider. 2.) Pictures of boobies on the wall. It's art, not porn. 3.) The bathroom was a bit of a nightmare. I'd suggest going when you REALLY have to go and not any time before. That said, I had a great evening here with one of my best, oldest friends and a new, Hawaiian mama jama amiga. We had great conversations, childish giggles, plastic couches and good drinks/cheers all around. No matter how old you get, spending a night drinking good brew and talking with good people will make you feel as though everything you're doing right then, right now...is right. I felt 'right' here. Your typical Mission hole in the wall bar. One thing to note it's cash only but not cheap, my Kettle/soda was $9 which is inline with most other bars in the city. If you get here early you can find a seat, the great thing is it's all first come first serve, not the usual trend of if you want to sit you have to buy a bottle that is spreading through the city. The crowed is really mixed and casual which is nice compared to the Marina, but then don't assume everyone is interested in the opposite sex here, not the case. But don't worry guys, there are tons of paintings on the wall depicting women in the nude with great cleavage. read more

There is an allure to this page that I don't quite understand. Maybe its the artsy magical lanterns adorning the bar or perhaps the paintings of naked (and tasteful) bodies that adorn walls or the dim lighting or the multitude of seating arrangements including bar, couches and high top tables. This is a bar I could totally see myself becoming a regular at if I lived in the neighborhood. Each time I come here, I end up spending a grand total of five minutes or so before moving on. That's certainly no testament to the place itself, seeing as I really like the vibe I've gotten, regardless of my experiences in small doses. The lighting is nice and Skott (also of Hemlock fame) is kind of a babe. But something about this places seems chill, and not overly ridiculous. And if it weren't for friends beckoning me to meet up with them elsewhere within minutes of stepping through the doors, I'd stick around a bit longer. The bar itself has a cool themed decor. As others have mentioned, it's got strange framed naked girl 'art' (that term being very loosely used) all around the walls and is very dimly lit. But the type of crowd that comes here on a Friday or Saturday night leaves something to be desired. It gets full of your typical mission weekender, which I find very annoying to be around. But i guess this is probably the case for most bars in the mission on the weekend. Beer's reasonably priced ($4 for anchor, my go-to), though it sucks that it's cash only. Can't vouch for the mixed drinks but the bartenders know what they're doing so i'm sure they're alright. The best thing you can do here is check out Phonogram on the third Friday of every month. While you might be surrounded by mostly lame people, you'll at least be able to hear DJ Major Sean and Ronnie spin great tunes all night. read more

Been here a couple times and have never had any issues with the service, patrons, or drinks. The $6 margarita comes in a pint glass and will get. you. drunk. As in "I'm only going out for 2 drinks but will be waking up wearing all of the clothes I went out in" drunk. I wish I were kidding. Make sure to grab a burrito before you hit the tequila. Pyramid on tap w/ an orange slice = :) Awesome, artful velvet paintings of breasts, breasts, and more breasts. Low lighting (a flattering red glow) and decor of this place is great. I'm more of a fan for the dive-bar-iness of this place than the drinks themselves. This dark, cash-only, bar is located on Valencia between 16th and 17th in the heart of the mission. The decor is a combination of velvet paintings and comfy sofas...and makes for a relaxing environment amid the high energy of the rest of the mission. Tip: If you get hungry, Arinell pizza is half a block toward 16th and serves up pizza by the slice. read more

Depending when you go here, this place can get super busy, so fair warning. I've been here a few times. I like the ambiance and the atmosphere of the place. There's a bar area to chill/stand/sit at, but there's also comfy lounge chairs (and some small tables) scattered around. The decor is something else. It was very... er... unique. Not bad, but just different, which is good if you're looking for a change from the usual. The bar staff is usually friendly, but when it gets busy here, they definitely seem overwhelmed. Don't be surprised if you have to wait a looong time for a drink. I came here last year for Mardi Gras, and there was a little show that was put on, which was fun to watch, but can be a bit awkward if (like me) you ended up at one of the front table seats and then have to try not to get smacked in the face. I've seen this dude drain 3 pointers with a broken clavicle and fractured ribs on a Tuesday. A TUESDAY. Yep. He brings his A game to your fantasy football league. So head down to Casanova. My favorite Mission bar for so many reasons: - The bartenders.. okay, make that a bartender. I go here because Margarita is an amazing bartender who shows passion for her work and actually makes some of the best margaritas I've ever had in my life. The other bartenders will get you a drink, but they're clearly not into their jobs and the quality shows. - These guys pour heavy. If you're into powerful beverages and into bars where they don't measure the exact amount of alcohol that goes into each drink, then you'll love it here. - The prices are reasonable. - Great location as it's only a block away from the 16th and Mission Bart. Negatives? - Cash only bar. This is likely great for their accounting, but not convenient for customers. - Music can be ungodly loud at times. read more

This place combines 3 of my very favorite things... Boobs Vintage Lamps Cheap, strong drinks Hard to go wrong with a bar that embraces all of them and also supplies a yummy leather couch, a cool crowd and a great location. I liked this place and all of the nudie pics and the cool glass grape lamps. At this point, I was well on my way to being supremely blotto, but persevered. Why? Because as I've mentioned (repeatedly), I'm an idiot and feel the need to be as masochistic as possible. A "friend" (and at this point, I use that term really loosely, so much that I pretty much hate his guts today. This will probably change when I get some beauty sleep because I don't hold grudges) told me that he would be here after he had dinner. As I hadn't seen him in awhile, and never when he's not working, I said okay, I'll go. Although they probably hate me now, I dragged FOUR OTHER PEOPLE with me, saying that "hey, something new to Yelp." Funny how the word Yelp turns people into sheep. Although my "friend" never showed up (despite assurances from first him via a telephone call and then later from friends of his), we did manage to do a little exploring. I managed to explore the men's restroom because I got a little lost. This seems to happen a lot, or maybe I just like to check out the goods before I buy. The drinks were reasonably priced, there were pictures of naked chicks on the wall, there were lights strewn above, there were glass grape sculpture things hanging, and eventually there was a couch for us to sit on. I don't go to the Mission often, but it's not a bad place. Not my favorite, but not the worst either. Which is more than I can say for my "friend." Jerk. **********Update********* So the little button to "write an update" isn't down there yet, and before I forget, I wanted to give everyone anxiously awaiting on the edge of their seats what could have happened to my "friend." Thankfully, I am a patient person, and pretty tolerant of a lot of things that happen in life. I'm also kind of a bitch in other ways and will cut you out of my will if you hurt me (although all you would get is 2 cats and a supremely dented car). If you were to judge this bar by its cover, you'd probably think: cheap drinks, nothing of memorable quality and a dark and standard spot to nourish your inner lush. But when I saw a chalk board outside promoting hibiscus margaritas, I thought this place might be awesome. The appropriately named bartender, Margarita, sauntered over to us with her pink neckerchief trailing behind her. A true expert of her craft, she assured us the hibiscus margs were the way to go. She prided herself on concocting the best drinks and particularly of note was the meticulousness she employed with every cocktail made. A bloody mary wasn't complete without adding individual spices, a teaspoon of horseradish, and a splash of Guinness; a margarita wasn't up to par without similarly fresh ingredients. And while all the other SF cocktologists marry their speakeasy flair to create a ménage of flavors in a glass, Margarita was swift and unpretentious in her execution, always putting flavor and freshness first. The nude women in the frames on the wall stared at me and while I sipped on my hibiscus pleasure and noshed on my Arinell NY style slice, I realized this was the best $6 I'd spent all day. read more

This is yet another Mission bar that turns into douche bag, Sally n' Nancy- just-re-highlighted-their-blond-hair-blonder, central. Which I guess is cool, but, um, not really. The bathroom smells fucking gross, this weird combo of bubblegum and Nag Champa. Eeeeeew. The crowd absolutely stupefies me, and I'm motherfucking smart as hell. This we can all agree on, right? You know, my intelligence. Shut up, back there. I hear you. Anyway, the bartenders are rad and I think one of the ladies also works at Hemlock. I see her at metal shows and appreciate her swift drink-pourin' disposition. But something just ain't quite right with Casanova and I'm having trouble figuring out exactly why. Perhaps the douchey clientele, in addition to the nauseating bathroom scent, in conjunction with the odd table layout that somehow reminds me of high school prom? When I'm feeling tired and whacked out from a long day participating in the San Francisco Hipster Olympics, I would certainly kick it with a beer at the Casanova. No, there's no official after party...that's because after parties are for babies (which is ironic, because one of the mandatory requirements for being a hipster includes having the attitude and social graces of a toddler). I liked the music, the seating and the rosy red hue of the mood lighting that made me feel like I was in some kind of Eastern European opium den. If you can come here when it's not crowded (i.e. not on Friday/Saturday night) it's pretty awesome. I like the decor - my personal favorite is the Michael Jackson female nude painting. I love the bartenders. They have always been friendly and interactive. I once had a girl who would not stop trying to make booty calls, so the bartender helped me compose a text message to dissuade her, haha. I have to take a star off because I made the mistake of ordering the most awful martini I've ever tasted.
