I have two words: Get one. The Cascade Camper folks are VW aficionados, as am I. In the old days, a VW bus with a fold down Z-bed was high style. Just carry an ice chest, flashlights, lanterns, water jugs, duffel bags, and we'd be living large - even as we shifted to 3rd and ascended the grade at 35 mph. Cascade Campers has magically fitted the best of the VW experience into the Ram ProMaster City - a bench seat that folds down to a comfortable two person bed plus lighting, storage, a sink, a single burner cooktop, solar power, a bit of electronic charging capacity and a refrigerator! I can hop in, set speed control for the speed limit (+/-) and have comfortable and worry-free transportation - and a comfortable and stealth place to stay at the end of the day. My Cascade Camper is really the best thing I have ever bought! It hits the sweet spot of function and form. To have all the key functional parts of an R.V. in a compact great mpg economical van, ( 29 mpg on drive from Grass Valley to WA., is genius. The small size allows one to get into areas of the parks that R.V.'s are not allowed. Also, less expensive to stay in the R.V. parks since it is considered tent/car camping, not a trailer/R.V. And for day use to the more local destinations, perfect, with refrigerator for picnics, cold drinks. Need to move things? With the bed down and cushions out you have a perfect load area for many boxes, whatever. And the team at Cascade is A+++. Thank you Cascade! Am having so much fun with my camper van. read more

Like all van-lifers I took a look at options and contemplated building my own, but I'm glad I went with Cascade in the end. Zach is selling a battle-tested design built from decades of experience working with campers. I visited his first production site just to make sure it would work, and I knew from the first few minutes of talking that he was the real deal. He's a handy person who loves VW campers, has old campers strewn around his lot, and genuinely just loves what he does. And it shows in the final build. Everything just works: * When the bed is folded up as a couch, you can lean against the driver's seat, it's super comfortable. * The shelves are the perfect size and so easy to pack and unpack for camping. They double as small tables. * There's space galore in the PMC, little places where you can stash emergency supplies or tools. So much space! * The quality of the build is superb: high quality wood, nice round edges, and all around solid detailing. Also to those considering the Wayfarer kit (another PMC camper), I also compared both and chose Cascade in the end: * The quality of wood in the Cascade is way nicer, the kit is overall just more polished. * Cascade has a sink, water tank, fridge, solar, battery, fan, etc. Living in a van without a fan to ventilate is a living hell, don't do it. The other stuff is what makes this kit so nice. * I did not need to remove the kit (but there's still so much space even with the Cascade furniture in). The one thing I actually did buy from Wayfarer was their insulation kit. It was a bit expensive but it does actually help keep the van warmer in the winter. It takes some work though to make some of the pieces fit with Cascade's furniture (I had to cut some pieces, or take apart furniture to put pieces in). So maybe in the future Cascade could offer an insulation add-on too. read more

*** FULL DISCLOSURE: I met, Zach, the owner of Cascade Campers, through a mutual VW Bus friend recently and wrote the text for his website. But this is an objective review -- I don't do fluff write-ups. Zach asked me to take out his camper, which he affectionately refers to as "the Little Van," and give him a brutally honest review. This is it. Here we go. *** REVIEW CONTEXT: I've done a significant amount of traveling/camping in 1965 VW Bus, so I have a bit of a unique perspective compared to someone with zero campervan experience. My girlfriend and I rented Zach's Ford Transit Connect camper for a weekend camping/hiking/mountain biking trip on the Olympic Peninsula. BOOKING/PICKUP: Booking the rental through outdoorsy.co was easy as pie (eating one, not making one). As a full-time campervan tinkerer who lives on site, Zach responds swiftly. Cascade Campers HQ is located less than five miles away from SEATAC airport, which seems super convenient for those flying in for a PNW adventure. When I arrived, Zach had a place set for me to park my car for the next two days. The camper was waiting for me all clean with a full tank of fuel and a high-quality hitch-mount bike rack on the back. The bike rack does set off the van's reverse collision sensors and makes the backup camera useless, but Zach assures me the former issue will be amended soon. CAMPER SPEC: Zach's camper setup in the little Transit is about as optimized as possible in such a small amount of space. The kit is clean, simple, and well-built. There's a small fridge, a small sink basin with an electric sink connected to a smart removable water tank connected via quick-release water lines, a 110v power inverter, a solar charging station connected to the rooftop solar panel that juices up the camper's deep-cycle battery, dimmable red LED light strips, four secured but removable milk crates under the slide-out couch/bed for storage, a butane-powered single burner stove, and of course the comfy slide-out couch/bed. Open the driver's side slider and you'll find two folding camp chairs and a miniature cast-iron pie tin for "pudgy pies," which are the best thing ever. There's also enough room in this area to store some firewood. Oh yeah, and there are USB charging ports everywhere. And I can't forget to mention the pretty great sound system up front. USABILITY: -- The sliding mechanism on the bed is of very high-quality and is a breeze to operate. And the bed is very comfortable; just the right size for two people. Slightly larger than the fold-out bed in my split-window VW Bus, but smaller than the loft bed in a late baywindow Bus or Vanagon. We checked the bedding for two people option and got a set of sheets, a wool blanket, and two great Thermarest camp pillows all stowed in one milk crate. That option also came with a really cool Rumpl blanket, which is essentially a sleeping bad with no zipper. -- Milk crate storage system is genius. In addition to the bedding crate there was a cooking crate with some cookware, utensils, spices, coffee and coffee making tools, and butane refills for the cookstove; a campfire crate with firestarter blocks, a long-necked lighter, telescoping skewers, and some other stuff I forgot about already. This leaves you with one milk crate open for storage of your choice. That's not very much. But the idea here is to pack light. We folded up some of our clothes and stowed it in this crate. We still had a laptop bag, two hydration daypacks and a bike pump looking for a home in the camper. We just ended up stowing them in the back, between the couch and the fridge, moving them to the front seats for sleepy time. I think adding a roof-mounted storage box option would be a very good idea, but would probably necessitate solar panel relocation. If you check all the option boxes storage space becomes scant. -- Fridge works great. -- Alternator/solar-charged deep cycle battery has plenty of power. -- Stereo sounds great up front but has no speakers in the back. Not a big deal, but it'd be cool to have some back there for musical snoozing. -- Fuel economy is phenomenal compared to a classic Volkswagen campervan. We got 26 mpg mixed across our two-day adventure. Any rear-engined VW camper would struggle to achieve 20 mpg highway -- ask me how I know. :-) -- Ventilation sorely needs attention, thought if one were hot enough they could prop open the hatch doors and/or sliders to cool down. Zach's working on installing a roof-mount ventilation fan and is brainstorming further ventilation upgrades. TL;DR: Very easy, pleasant camper rental experience. Camper performed flawlessly on a two day camping excursion on the Olympic Peninsula. Camper kit is very well built and is perfect for two people on a short road trip (a few days to a week). One person could probably live in a Cascade Camper for an extended period of time without many complaints. Great fuel mileage. Stealthy looks means you can camp anywhere. read more
