We needed two TVs and so we did research (Best Buy, Costco, Amazon) and decided to go to Video Only…read moreto check them out since we had never been there, but heard the ads everywhere. The reason we went to the VO store is because TVs have changed so much (and are constantly changing) and we wanted to chat with someone knowledgable about TVs. Granted each seller has their own preferred TV brands that they sell, but it was great to chat with someone about the brands, types, sizes and comparisons. At the Salem Lancaster Video Only store that person is Doug. He was SUPER knowledgable about the TVs and the different types and amenitites on each. He scrolled through the competition prices on line with me and explained in detail how Video Only sell their TVs, pricing and warranties, etc. He was extremely detailed so that everything was clear. Once we decided to go with the TVs at Video Only (two different brands), he gave me extremely valuable tips for setting up our TVs at home and was just an amazingly personable, professional employee. I even called him ON LABOR DAY when I was having trouble setting up one TV and he was there and told me what to do. It worked flawlessly. Doug at Video Only has made me a believer. Ask for him if you go to the store and you won't be disappointed!

Although we live in Arizona, my husband has been fantasizing about these speakers forever! Luckily,…read morewe had a wedding to attend to in Portland this past August, so he had a chance to actually visit the place where these wonderful speakers are made. He loved trying them out in the test room so much, that after checking it out himself, he brought me and his best friend out another day to test these speakers out as well. Well sure enough, it didn't take long for him to order them. The hefty $3,000-$4,000 price tag did kind of make me choke a bit, but let me tell you, it was like watching a kid on Christmas day once the speakers arrived. It almost seemed like love at first sight. I lost my husband for few days as he set his speakers up in our basement and he was perfecting the set up. The speakers work so well that it feels like an earth quake hit our house even though we live in Arizona and I live upstairs. I hate to admit that the sound is so crisp and clear, that you will get spoiled once you hear the speakers. Like a Volvo S60R or a Nissan GT-R, these Speakers are "sleepers." Not many people know about them, but they are cheaper than Bose speakers and produce an unfreaking-believable sound and "feel" for that matter. I urge you to try this company out to custom make your speakers. They surely know what they're doing, and they will help you make the right decisions every step of the way!

It's certainly okay that they don't have a storefront, but it's scheduling a time to see and hear the product that's a problem. Even though day and time was clearly stated and repeated back correctly, he still scheduled it for the wrong day and time on two different occasions. Unfortunately I was only in Portland on travel and haven't been able to make it back.

I bought the Pioneer speaker set designed by Andrew Jones, with two towers, a center channel and…read moretwo bookshelf speakers for side/rear placement. And the subwoofer. I read the reviews of Stereo Dave's modification of the sub, so I was interested. On speaking to Sean Scoggins, who runs Stereo Dave's, I found out they have a "special sauce" to modify these speakers. So, I sent them the towers. Frankly, a significant portion of the cost is in the shipping back and forth. But, even if you double the cost of the speakers, the modification was well worth it. They are much more open sounding, more musical, lighter, more responsive, and more realistic with better separation of sounds and better placement. This is the best-kept secret in audio. I have just sent them the center channel speaker (it has three drivers) for modification - with the towers sounding so good, the center channel was clearly pulling the system down and needed to be as good as the towers! I heartily recommend this service and will send them the other units for modification soon.

They were helpful to my needs, and I felt like they cared the whole time I was there - and respectful of my time as well. Here's why-- They are helpful and pleasant, have a solid selection of equipment and the listening room I have used is nicely set up from a sonics perspective. They know their stuff. Why my least favorite and why still four stars then? There is absolutely nothing wrong here. They work with your budget and try to understand you and your needs which the other shops do also. They don't pressure you. But each time I still got this subtle sense that they cared more about the sale than me the customer. They are also less brand agnostic than other shops, praising the brands they carry over other brands on two occasions. It's hard to explain, but in our other great audio stores, I don't get that vibe. They want me to enjoy great music and understand that it's all about the long term relationship. That's why those places have gained my repeat business, while I am still waiting for Stereotypes to earn mine. Let me add a couple of caveats: 1) I am so grateful that we have as many quality audio stores as we do. In most markets, Stereotypes might be the only, or certainly one of the best shops. 2) for some of my audiophile friends, this is their number one shop. So as always, ymmv. So if you are looking for a nice 2 channel stereo, please do give them a chance--and know that in Portland we are spoiled. If you love music and care about musical reproduction, please support our local shops.

Fortunately, I decided to venture down a search into the more local small businesses and came upon this cool old school & quirky shop. I think the gentleman's name was Jim. Older dude that could pass as your nerdy techy friend who's probably collected every tech gadget since the original Tron came out. Told him what I was looking for but I gradually got discouraged as all he was showing me were the bigger style bigger sound units that are common for home systems. But, alas! With a little patience we revealed a new treasure: smaller desk top speakers! Minor speaker mesh stains on the front but super decent with a little TLC. He was super friendly and chill, even making an effort to find parts that could potentially be missing from this set (like compatible power cord). It also came with an amp box that I've got sitting below my desk table, which was a nice surprise (I keep it plugged in for the deeper sounds or just unplugged for more "regular(?)" crispy audio). All that for a really awesome deal; I think it was something like $15-30 or something crazy like that. Good shit, dude! Thank you. If you're looking for small speakers, I probably snagged the last set but I definitely recommend this place for any help with acheiving 2 things at once: reusing/upcycling any sort of old working electronics and supporting a damn good local friendly small business.
