I love a coffee shop with lots of seasonal and specialty drinks! They made it hard for me to choose, but I went for the black sesame chai on their specialty menu because I've never seen that combo before and I love each of those flavors on its own. It did not disappoint! The black sesame flavor was very present but you also get that kick from the spices in the chai. It worked very nicely together. I also tried my husband's iced salted bac xiu which was the perfect combination of creamy and salty. Both were so good but I would say the salted bac xiu was a more approachable drink for those that are not used to the black sesame or chai flavors, which both can be quite strong. The mochi donuts were nice and fresh, perfect texture. We ordered two of each flavor but accidentally got shorted on one so luckily we caught it, just double check before you leave! read more

Hada really great time here. We got the Viet Coffee, Ube Latte and a Pandan and Ube mochi doughnut. The Ube donut was good and popular and almost sold out at 12pm on a Thursday. It was $3.5 for one which was affordable. The Ube latte had a more coffee flavor than Ube but it was good, refreshing and a nice morning pick me up. Pandan doughnut wasn't super strong and more on the chewier side. It was a good mix of both worlds. Overall it was $21.5 for two drinks and two doughnuts which was pricey but well worth a try. Service was really sweet! Our barista had two aussies as well and gave us some beef liver which Ellie enjoyed. I got the ube latte less sweet with ice. The ube flavor was barely there. I usually get less sweet at other places and I never have an issue with the ube flavor disappearing. So I'm not sure if getting the full sweetness affected the ube flavor. It was still a good latte though. read more

We found their drinks to be on the very sweet side. Will have to ask about customizing sweetness level. The bread wasn't the light, crumbly Vietnamese French bread--it was thick, pretzel-ish, and had a strange smell. The meat/soy sauce combo was so salty that my tongue was tingling. i LOVE a fun tasty drink. when i looked at the menu, i was torn between the ube latte and the cookie butter latte. i ended up going with the ube latte which was so cute and yummy without being overly sweet. it was the perfect ratio of ube to coffee. the barista was also so friendly, we had a little chat about tattoos, which i always enjoy. i'll definitely have to go back soon to try some of their other fun drinks ! read more

While on the hunt for a good matcha on the east side, I stumbled upon Portland Ca Phe. The strawberry iced matcha was absolutely beautiful as it was served, but I definitely recommend fully mixing it to experience the best flavor. I'd give it an 8/10. I also made the last second decision to try the coconut iced latte. I'm a sucker for anything coconut. Unfortunately, the coffee was a bit of a letdown compared to the matcha. It still tasted like a nice quality latte and wasn't too sweet, but the coconut flavor was extremely subtle. I probably wouldn't have detected the coconut flavor at all if it wasn't in the drink's name. I would definitely come back for another matcha if I'm ever in the area, but I'd skip the coffee. I saw a video on YouTube about someone exploring the different Coffee shops in Portland and Portland Ca Phe was on the list . I was intrigued and wanted to try them out by myself to find the truth of the matter . I got an Ube Latte and my hubby got the black sesame Chai . Super mediocre food here. I'm kinda shocked because the owners are Vietnamese and they eat good. Drinks are good but kinda overpriced. Except the matcha. The customer service here is giving indifferent hipsters in ironic Yeezy. 2/5 pass. I've gotten the banh mi twice now (first time didn't like it and it gave me a stomach ache but gave it another 5 months and it still sucks now). The bread was extremely stale and crumbly, the inside meat and filling was super dry and chewy (I saw them microwave it). There was 0 effort or love put into the sandwich ingredients. They also put so much soy sauce into the sandwich. I'm not sure how old the first sandwich was but it gave me a horrible stomach ache. This time no stomach ache but disappointment was there again. It doesn't taste authentic but more Americanized. You're better off getting best baguette and enjoying a real viet sandwich for less than $5. The drinks here - the black sesame latte / drink was so insanely gingery that I couldn't really taste the sesame other than the mouthfeel of the chunks of roasted sesame in the drink itself. This was poorly blended and I looked crazy after each sip as it stuck in my teeth ridges. Not enjoyable. The matcha drinks are solid though, they know what they are doing. The Vietnamese coffee is ok and it's nice to see options for more viet coffee in Portland. Customer service is non existent. I get more love at a boba joint. They don't really address you or talk much at all especially if you have a ton of questions. I think this is a last resort kind of place for me and I likely won't return. read more

I stopped by Portland Ca Phe when I was running some errands in this area and craving coffee. I actually didn't realize this location was here, I mostly knew of their first location over in SE! Free street parking down Russell St made it easy to stop in. I got just a small ube latte, but several other things on their menu caught my eye for next time (like ca phe sua, pandan waffles, black sesame chai, tofu banh mi, and their seasonal drink specials). It's $5 for a small which isn't cheap so for me this is a specialty treat rather than a daily source of caffeine. I took it to-go but there were folks hanging out and chatting. I wish they had a loyalty program where you could get stamps to get a 10th one free or something along those lines but they make a very strong Matcha and have their own Vietnamese roasted coffee. I've been to their original location located on Holgate and LOVED their Vietnamese coffee. I had their ube latte but this time, I knew I gotta get their Ca Phe Sua. This location is located next to the Merkato Ethiopian Food Store on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and NE Russell St with a tiny entrance that could easily be missed. There's only street parking around the area which could be very difficult to find. As mentioned, I got their Ca Phe Sua with half sweetness, and I was in love with it! The amount of sweetness and bitterness was just right for me. I LOVE my coffee with a strong, bitter flavor rather than a sweet creamy. Like many other coffees that specialize in Vietnamese coffee, the price was a bit on the pricier side. My friends got their Ube Latte and all enjoyed it! When I first had that, I didn't really care for it but after trying theirs again, I definitely enjoyed it this time around. I have been wanting to go to this location since Dec 1, when I saw their Instagram post about pandan waffles. I was out of the country for a while and then the holidays... finally I had a chance to go today. But, alas, no pandan waffles. They were out or something. That was literally the only reason why we drove all the way out there. And the hours are wrong on Yelp. So we arrived a half hour before they opened. Service wasn't friendly, by any means, but I guess I wouldn't consider it rude. No friendly hello when we walked in, just a "do you know what you want?" They had mochi donuts, so I got a pandan one and my husband had an ube one. They were really good. We also ordered a grilled pork bahn mi to split. We didn't mention we were splitting, but he cut it in half for us anyway because he figured we might be splitting. That was above and beyond we thought and what made me go from a 3- to a 4-star review. My caphe sua da was just okay. It tasted different than I've had before in both Vietnam and stateside, but I'm not entirely sure why. My husband got the tiramisu latte and liked it. Overall was a bit letdown to be honest the Ube didn't have a strong Ube flavor, and both of them tasted pretty much just watered down. We tried to add a bit of cream, but still it wasn't quite that enjoyable. The other pumpkin drinks did seem kind of interesting. Some will likely go back to try that maybe. Summer goal- hit up as many coffee shops I can in PDX to find my perfect iced coffee concoction. Ca Phe has been on my list for awhile, but I found the drive down to the SE to be cumbersome. Thankfully they've opened up in my neighborhood. They carry banh mi sandwiches ($9), traditional espresso drinks, many Vietnamese drinks that I'm not super familiar with, bagged coffee beans, Topo Chico and La Croix (serious bonus). There's some indoor seating and the cafe was pretty quiet. The 20 yo version of myself would love all of the delicious sounding coffee drinks with condensed milk, but the older version of myself stuck to an iced espresso with a splash of oat milk. I liked the coffee, but prefer a richer espresso. Also picked up a banh mi. I absolutely love banh mi sandwiches and thought their version was good, but on the drier side. Will keep that in mind next time. Anyways I'm thrilled to see them close by and will certainly stop by again. read more
