As a consultant, I am always on the scout for a temporary office to meet with clients. Case Study is not only convenient to my home office, also fits the bill as an upscale (translates into a tiny price premium) coffee shop that is PREFECT for business meetings. This place has the mix of spacious design, great music at a conversational volume, really good coffee and pastries, decent wifi, and easy parking. Over the last few months it is increasingly becoming my go to spot when I meet with clients in NE. - I am not much of a YELP reviewer but this place is worth the time and effort to give props to. read more

We finally have a good cafe on Sandy. Everyone is very friendly and knows their stuff. We all know that everyone and their moms' places serve Stumptown these days, but how many actually do a good job and care about it? The people at Case Study have done a much better job with Stumptown than Stumptown's cafes have done IMO, and it's not pretentious/hipster-laden. read more

What a beautiful coffee shop. I'm visiting from the Bay Area and had heard about this new coffee house from a friend. It is a standout, even in this mecca for third wave coffee geeks. They offer every preparation method from traditional espresso and french press to pourover to vac pot or chemex. They prepare amazing coffee drinks from some of the finest beans available. Food and beverage are, to a certain point, objective. Asking an espresso/coffee drinker to choose the "best one" is like asking a writer who their favorite author is. There are several amazing coffee roasters and cafes in Portland. I particularly like Case Study because their coffee is stellar (like many other roasters in town), their cafes are just comfortable to be in, and there's no attitude. I haven't differentiated between Sandy and Downtown, because they're coffee and service is very consistent. I haven't been to Alberta. These folks are very serious about their coffee (like many other places around town), but they don't have an air about being above everything else. I generally only drink their espresso (not coffee), so maybe my opinion is a little myopic. But I will say that I've never felt so at home in a place who serves some of the best tasting espresso in Portland. And it's just so nice, in a coffee town like Portland, to be greeted with a genuine smile and interaction. I don't always get that at other high caliber cafes I frequent. read more

This is my favorite coffee house in Portland. The atmosphere is awesome, lots of natural light, rotating art work, stained wood, wood floors, subway tile and black stone counters. The coffee is as good as it can get-made in a timely matter by real baristas. The staff is also friendly. I love this coffee shop and we frequent it at least weekly. I've lived in inner NE Portland for most of my life and always felt we've been undeserved when it comes to gourmet goods...but now Case Study Coffee just moved in on Sandy and rivals west side cafes with their passion and dedication to serving delicious coffee. They even have an cool, unusual brewing system that looks like an old fashioned chemistry set...fun! i am there about once a week. i enjoy the people and the shop. very pleasant, clean, well ordered, fun art on the walls, cheery... people who work there are friendly. they serve stump town coffee but also roast their own beans. i buy my weekly beans there. they make great coffee and have a sense of pride to do so... just a good fulfilling, restful stop. read more

Great Coffee and great ambience! I don't typically get latte's or cappuccinos, but the baristas here do such a great job with the foam I can't help myself! Great place in an area that is only getting better. Oh, and the pastries are great, too! read more

I moved to Portland from South Africa a couple of weeks ago and stumbled upon this place last week. I met this nice young lady Kelly behind the counter who unfortunately was leaving the cafe that weekend to go on a life journey. We chatted for a couple of minutes and then she graciously invited me to a send off gathering which was taking place at the coffee house that Saturday. Seemingly knowing NO ONE in Portland, I figured I would drop-by and just say hello in hopes of meeting some new people. The host of the gathering must have sensed that I was slightly uncomfortable and brought me over a drink, chatted with me and then made sure that my glass was never empty which I very much appreciated. Great service both times and I plan on going back many times. Thank you for making a great first impression of Portland for me. read more

worst iced coffee of my entire life! i threw it away after 2 sips. loud, crowded, bad music.

It's the space that seals the deal for me. The coffee is solid and the goodies are just fine (not to mention that Bakeshop is right next door - bonus). The people behind the counter have been consistently pleasant and welcoming without being cloying, and I appreciate that. In fact, it's saying a lot because believe me, in the time that I've lived in Portland I've been regularly astonished by how often I come across coffee shop employees who aren't ashamed to give off the vibe that they sort of wish you hadn't stopped by. But they should be ashamed, and furthermore when I catch that vibe I make a point to visit and revisit places like Case Study, and then I spend my money there and later on I write about it. But back to the space, it's a lovely old building with lots of different seating options if you're sticking around: window seats along a bar, smaller tables for ones and twos, and a big center table. I've been there solo and with my family and it's all been good - we're all looking forward to our next visit. read more

SO I walked here from the food pod down the street on a visit from out of town. I had read about the Sugar Shop cart and their heroin-like addictive sweets and had to try them (did not disappoint). I thought it would be nice to have a fun coffee with my treat. When I walked into I instantly regretted it. It seemed sterile and cold and spartan. The waitstaff did not even make eye contact. It was weird. I normally just have an americano, but then I saw how reasonable, the prices were and went all out and got a hazelnut latte. I ordered my sister a mocha. The eye contact avoider took her time making it, and not in a bad way. Watching her (a tall short haired butch woman with glasses) make that mocha was like watching an artist work. Everything she did was with care and deliberate. I was totally enthralled watching this. I love seeing someone take pride in their work. Then I got my latte. HOLY EFFING COW. I have never, EVER had a better latte in my entire life. The hazelnut flavor wasn't chemically or syrupy. It was as if she had ground the nut herself just for me to have a life changing hazelnut experience. This has been a week ago. I keep talking about thiscoffee to my friends back home so I feel I need to Yelp. I should not have judged the barista from the lack of eye-contact; she's an artist. A true master of her work.
