Had an interesting experience with the owner today - some people should just not own a coffee shop. I came in with a group of 4 friends to drink coffee and socialize. When I went to the counter to order, the owner just said "speak". I placed my order and then he told me he was closing up in 30 minutes. I asked politely if that meant we would need to leave at that time or maybe is there an outside table we could use? He said he had errands to run and we would need to leave the premises. I said no problem at all, we'll probably just head down the street to Crema which stays open longer. My friends left and I was gathering my things when the owner (who didn't see me) said to another customer "why did they have to make that so f#Cking complicated?". The customer looked really embarrassed. I just said calmly "I'm still here. And we weren't trying to be complicated. I just asked for information so we could make a decision on whether to stay or go somewhere else". Not sure why he was so angry. read more

Fantastic local coffee shop. Good prices on lattes and things, fantastic bagels (so fluffy) and shmeaaaaar. (I love it when they perfectly toast and smother it on there and make it like a sandwich when it's to-go and they did that). Coffee was great, caramel latte had the perfect amount of sweetness. Ordered a bagel and was pleasantly surprised to get it already toasted with the cream cheese spread on it. Calm atmosphere, would come again. Barista was a pro and friendly. read more

I think I've always gone by this place too early in the morning on my runs, so I somehow only just made it in to this neighborhood spot! Popped in to grab an espresso w my pup; owner was friendly and gave me some good info about the local coffee scene. Love that this is a labor of love. Spacious indoors but I'm more of an outdoor dining person which this had: For a quasi busy street, the side patio is a quiet oasis of calm and I'm coming back here without a doubt. So much quieter to sit out with a friend or read a book than some other nearby spots. Oh, and the person balking at the bean prices... other places charge you $20 but you aren't looking that you're only getting 10 or 12 oz for that, when this is a full pound for $24 of local fresh roasted beans. Oblique is a neighborhood coffee shop and family owned. It has a really unique vibe and I've watched it change and evolve over the past 10 years. The owners are very nice and always patient. My favorite thing is stopping by and being treated to a little jam session with some older gentlemen who play on their own instruments as well as the in-house piano. Came here in the morning the other day with my friends. A bit surprised we were the only ones in, nothing wrong that though since it means we get to be serviced right away. A couple more customers came in maybe 10 minutes later. One of them left though, guess he couldn't wait anymore to get his coffee. I guess if you're in a rush, this place may not work for you. Looked like the owner of the joint was the only one working so far. He was very friendly though. You can tell he owned the place since the cafe was decorated with a bunch of his personal items such as photos of him and his family and his kids drawings. Felt very unique. I got myself a simple iced latte with soy. I didn't see the other menu to the left of the cash register til later where the cafe lists the different types of coffee beans they had available. Missed out on that and will have to check that out next time. No complaints here. Shop is hidden away within the residential area. It felt safe, spacious, and seemed like a chill spot to just hang out. read more

The coffee was good but the kittens were great! There were three ADORABLE little tiny grey kittens that were so fun to play with while I was waiting for my order. I wanted to take them all home! The menu is a very traditional coffee menu with your regular americano, latte, mocha, chai, etc. I asked about the chai and the lady said it is spicy and made in house. There are different coffee blends, but no fall themed drinks or speciality flavors. I got a hot oat milk latte and it was scrumptious! Very creamy, comforting and rich. The coffee here tastes like a darker roast and doesn't have a bitter aftertaste like some can. It was ready really fast! I wish it had taken longer so I could have had more kitten time lol. read more

This is our go-to source for beans and drinks. There are tons of places in Portland for coffee but Oblique is clearly the most genuine. From the moment you walk in the Victorian-era building, the simple yet cozy layout and aroma of coffee (roasted right there!!!) take over your senses and scream, "authentic Portland." We have an espresso machine at home that keeps us very happy, mostly because we get our beans at Oblique. The experience at Oblique keeps us coming back week after week. I'm so glad I finally got a chance to stop by this cafe as I have long admired the building -- a renovated Victorian mercantile. Walking inside is like taking a step back in time. We stopped by midday for two bags of freshly roasted coffee beans. They were roasted just three days ago! That's a win in my books. We sampled the sumatra blend - super smooth and delicious. The quirky, mad scientist and owner of this establishment could be called nothing less than a purist. He might not believe in flat whites, but who can blame him when his cortados are so well balanced? Inherent in the name, Oblique feels full of quirk and oddity; It is definitely a departure from your traditional coffeeshop. More homey, and less "stare at our plants pls". I dig it. Get him talking and you'll find how much he loves the craft, and he roasts it all himself in house! The buttery Colombian he poured me was fantastic. My partner and I love to stop in here! It's the perfect place to get a warm beverage on a walk to Laurelhurst Park. The building itself is so cool, obviously an old gem that has been lovingly cared for. The plants growing around the building add to the whole vibe, and the service is always great! Oblique also regularly changes the whole beans on offer, so there's usually something new to check out each week or so. I enjoyed the coffee and love what the owners have done to preserve the historic building. I sought them out after being intrigued by the sight of the building on an episode of Portlandia and reading about the renovation on their website. That said, I found the owners less than outgoing and friendly. They appeared more interested in the person coming in to sing later and told me I'd have to vacate my seat. Tried going to this spot the day before but looks either google was wrong about hours or they just had a late open. I've worked in food before so I know sometimes shit just happens. The place get very cozy, looks like it has a lot of integrity rather than other coffee spots that are just white walls. I really enjoyed my Shot in the dark, my girlfriend liked her latte but usually prefers ones on the sweeter side which this was not.
