After two visits here during this past Yanks/Sox weekend, I can see why ESPN named Cask'n Flagon top baseball bar in the country! Upon entering, the venue is cleverly laid out, with plenty of open space near the bar, while booths and high-top tables remain tucked inside crevasses or near support columns. There's a separate dining-only area (both inside and out), and if you round the corner beyond the bathrooms, there's a "nightclub" called Oliver's. There, you'll find a dimly-lit area with even more open space. Oliver's is probably best for live shows and dancing, but for watching games, you can't beat the front (Cask'n Flagon) area. No big deal...I'll stick to beers. What'll bring me back to this place is not my love for the Red Sox (after all, I'm a visiting Yanks fan from NY), but it's attention to detail in the entire place. As I mentioned above, whatever your mood and/or level of "rowdiness," there's a space for you inside the Cask'n Flagon. Heck, I must have counted six TV's...IN THE BATHROOM...baked right into the wall so you don't miss even a second of the action outside. Also, let's not forget that this place is less than 50 feet away from Fenway Park. It's no surprise that the baseball enthusiasm easily permeates this place before, during, and after games! The bartender was fine at the bar but the bar was very dirty, the whole security guards and hostess set up is horrific, they are super controlling, it's weird! The hostesses are so rude, they won't let you get a table if you just want drinks so you are forced to get food! My son had a nip in his back pocket that was sticking out a bit so of course when I went to the bathroom (I'm a 57 year old woman) the security guard harrassed him like they were cops forcing him to take everything out of his pockets and hand over the two nips, now mind you he just turned 23, these kids are much different than we were at that age so he complied, I would have never! but neither here nor there, this was illegal, we had drinks (expensive ones!-straw marg is gross and so are the onion rings) and it was none of their business what was in his pocket it was unopened! AND we were basically sitting on the trashy sidewalk! After reading the majority of these reviews, everyone seems to have issues with security there who are just punks, and are hot heads and are not doing the right thing to patrons, this place is too expensive to be treated like criminals. I of course tried to speak to the young woman manager who since she was young walked away from me since she had no clue how to handle this, we used to party here back in our 20's and this place is awful now and not fun and nothing like it was back then, it's a joke and we will never ever go back. Great place for pregame debauchery! Get there really early on game days to get a spot to cop a squat! The food can be hit or miss, but this last time the hubs and I opted for the combo platter starter sampler to share while we waited for rain to pass before one of our Yanks/Sox games. It was the perfect bar food meal for two! The Philly steak and cheese spring rolls are ridiculous. I always expect places like this to have sub par service, especially when it's packed with game-goers. But I've always encountered friendly staff that puts up with the masses really well! Even sitting at a packed bar, our bartender kept 'em coming and never once had to ask, "What are you drinking again?" Impressive with the amount of people in the joint. I haven't visited the Cask and Flagon in quite a while but to my surprise everything was as it should be the same as it always was a great spot across the street from Fenway to grab drinks and apps. Luckily I found parking A few does the way. As we entered the doorman was pretty amusing kudos for working the front like it's supposed to be. As soon as we found seats at the bar the bartender came over was very prompt brought us food menus and took our drink orders properly. I was impressed with the fresh muddled Mojitos in a good amount of fresh blueberries added to my Wachusett blueberry beer. The appetizer that I tried was the hummus plate which consisted of what seemed like homemade hummus as there was still a whole chickpeas in the mix with a side of salad which consisted of tomatoes cucumbers and feta along with fresh pita bread very light hearty filling appetizer definitely want to order. All the staff were on the game this day from the doorman to the bartender to one of the managers who said hello as he made his way around the bar. The facility was extremely well-kept and clean for the amount of people that come in and out of this place. Definitely check them out after a game or just head on over to enjoy the Boston nightlife this place will be sure to please. They also have outside seating for a nice night. Who would have thought this place is known for their BBQ? I certainly didn't, and I've never read the reviews on this place. I walk by here almost every day to work and never once thought to come and eat here. It wasn't until I came with some coworkers and my boss to eat here for a birthday lunch that I tried their BBQ and boy have I been missing out. We came on a relatively quiet empty day, it was lunchtime in the middle of the work week, so to be expected. We were promptly seated and I was overwhelmed with all of the options on their menu. Our waiter suggested the BBQ because they were known for it. I'm a huge fan of BBQ so I was definitely willing to try. I ordered the BBQ pulled pork with a side of mac n cheese and coleslaw. Everything was delicious. The prices were also reasonable given everything that I got and portion size. My coworkers also liked what they ordered, it wasn't BBQ though I did forget what they ordered. My Family and I enjoyed a nice evening at the Cask'n Flagon. The atmosphere was awesome, it almost felt like things were back to normal but the safety features were adhered to as well. Our waitress, Trinity, was fun to have, we wish she could have sat with us. We will return and recommend it to you and family. One down side was my BBQ ribs and brisket though. The restaurant and bar were impeccably clean as well as the floors. I will admit that a large part of this review is about the cocktails. I tried I believe 4 different Martinis and my fiance drank his usual beer of the season. I cannot rave enough about how absolutely tasty, and perfectly crafted they were. All of the little elements like house made, and infused simple syrups to simple garnish and being carefully served. The bartenders here were really impressive and fun! 1) Pear Martini 2) Ginger Martini 3) Lavender Martinin 4) Specially crafted Ginger and Lavender Martini (at my request ) Mussels: These guys came out piping hot and steamy with a side of perfectly toasted garlic toast. Plump, sweet, and full of flavor, the mussels were served with tomato, corn, onion, and a really good wine sauce. I think it took us all of 5 minutes to scarf down every last one of them. Truth be told, I probably could have eaten another order of them, and can promise that there will be a repeat order on my next visit. Jambalaya: Absolutely delicious! I personally hadn't ever had Jambalaya as I tend to be a Paella kind of chick, but we certainly weren't disappointed. Their Jambalaya has amazingly bold flavor, medium heat, and a good amount of meat. I really liked the sausage that was in this dish, and was happy with a successful food adventure. FANtastic BBQ! Wow! I would NOT have expected to get GREAT BBQ in Boston, MA (and I am from here, so I know). However, the Bartender did not do us wrong with the recommendation to go for the BBQ Double. Cask and Flagon makes ALL their BBQ on site, and it was DELICIOUS! I went with the Brisquet and the Ribs with the recommended mac-n-cheese and slaw as the sides. The Brisquet was slightly better than the fall-off-the-bone ribs, but BOTH were EXCELLENT. The mac-n-cheese lived up to its remarkabke rep, but the slaw was average at best (I just like my slaw a bit more mayonnaisie). Growing up here, I brought to LA friends here for the nostalgic value and to get a glimpse of Fenway Pahk and the Monstah. They LOVED it, too! Would have been great to get them in here during a home game for the true FAN experience, but a 55 degree day in February will do. I usually can give any restaurant/waitstaff the benefit of the doubt due to business, time of day, etc. However, during my first ever trip to Boston I tried this restaurant and my friend and I were outright ignored. After asking for seating outside, we were sat and forgot about. I attempted 2 different times to flag down staff to ask them if we could at least get a drink. They both said they would "see who was responsible for our table" and proceeded to walk past us multiple times without bringing us anything or saying a word to us. We wanted to try a few things and got the Steak Gorgonzola Fettuccine and buffalo wings. We ate the Fettuccine first and it was very buttery, fatty, had no flavor, had to add my own salt and pepper and my steak was burnt but it carried the whole meal. I love going here to watch any Boston sports team. It's always fun to watch the steady stream of drunk fans fall out of Fenway after a Sox game. The food here is definitely bar food- not always bad but not always great. The bar atmosphere is cool though, they really patrol people standing in walkways because of the waitresses needing to deliver food. A word before you go here: don't go during a Red Sox game, don't go during a big Fenway concert, don't go after 8PM on Friday or Saturday. Heed these warnings and you be fine. I headed here with friends at 7PM, it was dead. Yeah it began to fill up once the Sox game hit the 4th inning but it was all good with me, we were two pitchers deep into Sam Adams so whatever.
