I'll be honest -- I was a little skeptical coming here after reading some reviews that said the food was just "okay" and that people had long waits even with reservations. That was NOT our experience at all. We came for an early Valentine's Day date and it was absolutely amazing. From the moment we arrived, everything felt smooth and welcoming. We were seated without any issues, and the staff was so kind and attentive throughout the entire evening. The views alone are worth it -- stunning, romantic, and the perfect backdrop for a date night. But the food? Delicious. Every dish was flavorful and beautifully presented. My friends and I visited on a Sunday evening and were seated outside. They had heaters on so the cold wasn't an issue at all. It was a busy night but our server did a good job of checking in. For starters, we ordered the Caesar salad (which comes with capers), Brussel sprouts, and calamari. Everything was really good and perfect for sharing. We ended the night with the lava cake which was chocolatey and gooey and served with ice cream. It's a great restaurant to check out for almost any occasion like date night, a celebration, or just hanging out with friends. The view is beautiful especially around sunset. If you have the pleasure of dining at Castaways on a clear night with tepid winds and a mild temperature I can see where it will be one of the better dining experiences. After being in LA for many years I just got to eat here for the first time. I know they went through a renovation some time ago but I can see the vision they had in mind. I can also say that they have not gotten all the way where they want to go but they get a star for the attempt. The area outside for dining is fantastic, again weather dependent. For a special occasion, date night, or even just enjoying the views you can love it. 5 stars. The execution on the food is another story. They start off the tale with a cornbread that is actually very good. We ordered calamari and a Caesar salad to start. The calamari was good, nothing out of the norm. The Cesar salad was boring and beyond normal. As uninspired as it looks in the photo. Most people ordered steaks. I had the branzino. The presentation of the fish was a 2 out of 10. The flavor was a solid 7. It was delivered folded over and inside seemed to have some onions which were fine. But I did find more bones inside than expected. Two of the three steaks were cooked correctly. One was off. The person ate it but wasn't thrilled. We didn't get desserts so nothing to say there. I'm not rushing back. This is just for BRUNCH. I have been here many times for dinner and it's always amazing but let me tell you, for a tired working mama with little time to herself the brunch was top notch. We started off with the bottomless mimosas and let me tell you- it's worth every penny. They have four different flavors to try and they are all very good. My favorite was the sunrise with watermelon and passion fruit. Next we had the ahi tuna tartar and then I had a steak Benedict. Perfectly cooked steak, Benedict was enough to share, my friend had the power bowl and we shared both. We ended up staying until 4:30pm it was so nice. Aw man, I REALLY wish my review was more positive because not only did I enjoy the food at this restaurant along with the service and ambiance, the DineLA eventfulness elevated the entire experience. My friend and I got a three-course meal of the seafood tower, their whole branzino, and a key lime pie on a graham crust. It was $65 before tax and tip, give or take what you buy (I think the tower was $10 extra, so maybe $55 standard). This does not count the cheddar hot honey cornbread--a SPECTACULAR dish with chunky butter and sea salt. What docks my review to 1 star is my violent food poisoning episode that took place 30-45 minutes after my meal. I thought my stomach pains came from possibly the quantity of food and me not being accustomed to multiple courses. Was it the queasiness, dizzy head, and the struggle to breathe that made it abnormal this time? When I arrived home, I basically underwent the textbook food poisoning symptoms of expelling everything (specifically vomiting a ton), extreme fatigue, dehydration, and low energy with a sore throat. The next day, I was bedridden 99% of the time and could barely keep my eyes open for more than an hour. It took everything in me to get out of bed or off the couch and drink water, let alone eat any more food. I wish the incident didn't happen, otherwise this would've been a near-perfect meal! I don't know, maybe I'll come back much, MUCH later to see if this can be redeemed, but this visit will stave me off of raw-ish seafood for almost an eternity as I'm fairly certain what did me dirty was the seafood tower or some kind of cross-contamination. read more

Tough to snag seats right on the edge (which most were seeking); I was told they were "paid reservations" - not sure what that means but I would have opted in if I knew. Still, our seats a row over away from the more prominent area were quite nice/fulfilling. We also witnessed an engagement (aww) - yes it's that kind of place, conducive to special moments. I don't remember the complimentary jalapeno cornbread/honey butter combo as a starter from the last time I was there, but it's such a smooth move to have that as a signature starter for all diners. SO delicious, and perked our appetites for the rest. For 3 people we ordered: shrimp cocktail, Surf and Turf deviled eggs, French Onion toast, calamari, mac and cheese, garlic fries, Himalayan Salt Brick, and 2 desserts (key lime pie and lava cake). The view from the top to the bottom, especially at sunset? Ooh yes! Parking here is gonna cost a bit ($10-15), so my friends and I took UBER and Lyft to/from here. The staff that worked here were friendly, but they unintentionally made an effort to avoid my group while serving small bites time and time again. Ironically fed up, we "spawn camped" that queue almost like a videogame in hopes of not being missed and eventually approached some servers for small bites. For dinner, we had a petite salad. Petite is not an understatement, but it was accurately the most sad pasta I had ever seen, perhaps just a few leaves. On the plus side, the dressing was a good amount. Bread was served with butter, and it was okay. The steak was cooked very well - in the sense that it was a chore to eat. Towards the end of the meal, silverware and glassware were cleaned up. It had a divit in the center that made it nearly impossible for me (and several others at my table) to set the knife down without it falling into the garlic puree and making my knife sticky. In regards to the late arrival if my food. I had to sit, watching a table of people eat and finish their foods before mine arrived, which was quite frustrating. Price: 5/5: I was actually shocked the prices were reasonable. My steak was $45, with a $12 side, which is about normal, if not cheaper than many steak houses.I had been here many years ago, and always thought it was quite expensive for what you get, and that youre mostly paying for the view and Ambiance. However this is not the case. The price for quality is a value, and the beautiful views is an added bonus. Service: 4/5 - Service was excellent. We've been to castaway multiple times and love going there. The food and service are always excellent. We got the crabcake (not pictured) and caviar frites for our appetizers. For the entree, we got the short ribs, butterfish, ribeye, wagyu picanha, and snake river farms wagyu. We also got the Mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts and creamed corn for the sides. The caviar frites were okay in my opinion. I probably wouldn't get that again. The rest of the food was really good. Our server Dylan was really sweet and went out of his way to make us feel special. It's a beautiful restaurant and the view outside is amazing. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the music. I love Castaway, but I normally go for dinner. So I was excited to try their brunch last weekend. My party sat outside right by the glass, so we had a wonderful view. Our server was Juan Carlos I believe. He was super attentive and just a great waiter. The dishes we tried were the power bowl, chicken and waffles, and salmon benedict. Everything was outstanding. The place looks really lovely on the inside. We went here during Christmas Eve. We ordered the popcorn chicken and calamari for our appetizers which is surprisingly good but just a little disappointed with the portion. Once you look more on the inside of the "popcorn bucket" there are only a few popcorn left and 2 popcorn chicken. So it's not completely full. For our entree, my partner got the lobster and shrimp bucatini and I got the wild new Zealand swordfish. Both are absolutely amazing! I just wish there's more seasoning on my potatoes! What a lovely place! It's a bit outside of the city, but definitely worth the visit. Super lively atmosphere and it was extremely busy even before dinner time. Highly recommend making a reservation in advance, especially if you want to catch the sunset. Food was great. They serve a complimentary Corn Bread that is so unique and savory! The whipped butter that comes with it is incredible. Enjoyed the Caviar Frites so much, we finished the huge portion between two people. Wild Mushroom Pappardelle was so flavorful and they did not skimp on the mushrooms, but my favorite has to be the Cabernet-Braised Short Rib. It was so tender, flavor was incredible, and they gave lots of sides with the dish: sautéed spinach, roasted carrots, and truffle creamed corn. It was a great way to try everything. Didn't have much of an appetite after that. Gross. So incredibly rude & disgusting Who wants to eat somewhere being left feeling violated & disrespected. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this restaurant for all the years I've been coming here. I've been coming to dine-in since 2015 so a little over a decade. I come several times a year. I also go to the sister Luminarias up North and it's also stellar. The owner seems to love placing restaurants on top of the hills with breathtaking views haha! Can't say enough great things about Castaway. I don't have any complaints. Every time we come here, it is always an enjoyable dining experience. We have brought everyone here and continue to- friends, family, visitors, colleagues, church group etc. Beautiful views, warm and working heaters, spacious seating, dog-friendly! (My puppy dines in with us, even for Thanksgiving). My most recent dining experience was last Year's thanksgiving (delayed post) but still never the less, deserves much praise! We were blown away with our meals. The price was very attractive for the Thanksgiving feast. We loved the fact Castaway put other foods on the menu so we didn't have to eat traditional turkey. Menu has all the varieties and is never limited. Service is very friendly, warm and hospitable. 10/10 read more

I recently dined at Castaway for an anniversary dinner, and overall it turned into a memorable experience though it didn't start that way. We had a 7:00 PM reservation but weren't seated until around 7:30 PM. After being seated, it took another 30 minutes before a server approached our table. I understand there were multiple events happening that evening, but there should be better awareness of newly seated guests. It was a bit frustrating seeing nearby tables receive drinks and appetizers before we were even greeted. Once our server Teddy stepped in, the experience completely turned around. He was incredibly attentive, friendly, and made us feel genuinely taken care of. You could tell he was covering a large section, yet he still delivered excellent service and we really appreciated his effort. The food was absolutely amazing and honestly the highlight of the night. I had the Snake River Farms Wagyu Zabuton, and it was the best Wagyu I've ever had prepared for me. The Cabernet-braised short rib my girlfriend ordered was incredibly tender and literally melted in your mouth. The calamari appetizer was savory and well-seasoned, and the chilled oysters were fresh and delicious. The 50/50 mash and mac and cheese were also great additions to our entrées and complemented everything perfectly. Aside from the slow start, everything else made for a special and memorable anniversary dinner. What a wonderful place to relax, have a cocktail or glass of wine, and some great food, while enjoying amazing city and mountain views. It's nestled in the hillside above Burbank and surrounded by a golf course. Large private parking lot, with valet parking available ($11). Plenty of beautiful photo ops. SERVICE: Austin waited on us, and he was just incredible. I will ask to be seated in his area the next time we visit. We also had an interaction with Gabby (manager, I believe) and she went above and beyond for a "half kidding" request I made. She jumped into action and made it happen immediately. I was pleasantly surprised at the extremely high level of service here! DRINKS: We started with a few cocktails off of their "See, Smell, Sip...Cocktails That Will Blow Your Mind" menu. The Belle ($24) and the Seoul on Fire ($19) which were both beautifully presented and delicious. We also had a couple glasses of wine, a Caymus Sauvignon Blanc ($17) and a Schooner Red Blend ($19), with our entrees which paired very nicely. They have a huge indoor bar which might be fun to check out on a future visit. We came here for business lunch, 8 of us. It has been 8 years since I last came here. My boss said they had remodeled the restaurant. The entrance looks very modern and welcoming. Once we walked in, the bar looks very posh, all the wood decor added warmth to the area, it looks very inviting for a drink. We were seated at our booth table and we could see the view. It was a gorgeous day, not too cold with plenty of sun. We ordered a few appetizers, tuna tartar, popcorn chicken and calamari to share. I ordered the power bowl and my co workers ordered chicken sandwiches and burger. The drinks are great, too. Most of the food was great. One of the chicken sandwich came out a little raw, we could see the chicken patty looked pink in the center. The server courteously took it away and brought back a thoroughly cooked chicken sandwich. He also apologized. After lunch, we ordered the up, up and away dessert tower. So shocked with the presentation and so many desserts that we couldn't finish. So I would give this place 4.5 stars. Went for brunch and the service was great, warm Sunday afternoon and the sat on the patio which got packed and deservedly so. Cool view of the valley, great location for brunch. Had a few cocktails which were good. The wives both ordered a drink off menu that they did not like at all and the server took them back no questions asked, replacing with different drinks. I had prime Hager steak Benedict. The steak was perfectly cooked, the eggs were great only slight complaint was could have used a little more hollandaise sauce... the fingerling potatoes were delicious with grilled onion and peppers. My wife had the crab cake Benedict which she really enjoyed although she found she did not need the English muffin with the crab cake. Had Brussels sprouts which for Brussels sprouts I thought were delicious, what ever sauce they cook them in was delicious. But had surf and turf deviled eggs, battered piece of lobster and steak on a deviled egg, super delicious. This place was very good, a little far from my house but was worth the drive. First, I want to start by saying this review has nothing to do with our server, Andrew. Andrew, was outstanding and made all of us, especially my sister on her birthday, feel truly special. Excellent service all around. Thank you, Andrew! Unfortunately, the food did not match that experience. We ordered two New York Strip steaks (medium and medium rare), and both came out extremely tough. The outer layers were overcooked to the point where even a steak knife struggled to cut through. There was no tenderness in either steak, and the amount of chewing required was far from what you'd expect at those temperatures. It felt like the steaks were rushed or improperly cooked. In addition to the steaks, the calamari was overly salty, the half chicken was bland and on the dry side, and the mac and cheese was also on the saltier side. We chose not to send them back in order to avoid disrupting the celebration. This wasn't my first time at Castaway. I've been here many times for everything from casual dinners to holiday menus, which made this experience even more disappointing. We spent about $700 (including tip), and while it's not just about the cost, the overall food quality didn't come close to justifying the price. It ultimately put a damper on what was supposed to be a perfect birthday celebration. I celebrated a friends birthday here and we had a great time! The restaurant was beautiful, and the view was so nice even though it was dark out. They only offered valet parking which is a little crazy given they have such a big parking lot. We also ended staying until closing so they didn't end up bringing our cars to the front for us, we just walked to where they were parked in the lot. The food was super tasty and our server was incredibly nice and gave us great recommendations. They brought out an incredible corn bread to start. We got a few apps including oysters and calamari and for meals we got steaks, the salmon, and a salad. The steaks were delicious, the Cesar salad was great - the crispy capers were outstanding. The salmon was cooked perfectly but when asked to have it without capers they ended up not including the sauce (they were already in the sauce) and therefore the salmon was super bland. I love the views and the drinks here. I'm writing a review, though, because this is not the first nor second time, but third out of my three times coming here that the meat was a miss. The first two times I came, the meat was not hot at all. The first time it wasn't even warm, and we had to send it back-which delayed and threw off our dinner. Yesterday we came in and I, per usual, asked for medium rare. It was rare. At this point I was hungry and ate around the edges, as I knew that sending it back would throw off the dinner again. but the entire center of the cut was completely red and just, rare. I couldn't eat it not because I didn't want to, but because it grossed me out. Hopefully they figure out their meat situation, because apart from that they've got a good thing going on. read more

Unfortunately I'm so observant,the guy that always standing holding the door access to the patio served water to the other table just put down the water pitcher without pouring water on their glasses and it was so obvious the poor costumer looked at the guy that just turned away after putting down the pitcher to their table ‍. Everyone comes here for the view, and the good food helps! I ordered the berry me softly to start off and it was a tad sweet for me. The surf and turf deviled eggs were delicious - not usually big of them but they were crafted amazingly. The standout was definitely the braised ribs I ordered for my entree. It was so tender and seasoned so well, and paired with truffled cream corn and roasted mushrooms (my favorite things ever), it was a most delightful dish. Service was alright, nothing special, especially considering the cost. The price is steep but if you're looking for a good dinner with a view, this is the place to be. read more

We had reservations at 6:30pm, when we arrived, out table wasn't yet ready so they asked us if we wanted to wait at the bar to which we said yes. We ordered two drinks, a Glow and what tasted like a Hennessy lemonade that only tasted like lemonade. These drinks were nothing to rave about and were quite disappointing. Our table was ready before our drinks which made for an awkward experience because they can't transfer the check from the bar so the hostess stood next to us while we closed out and got out our drinks (props to her though, she did a good job with the small talk). I also ordered the Glow but they initially gave me a different drink. Additionally, when we we were seated, a waiter came over with drinks but at that time we hadn't ordered anything additional, he brought them to the wrong table. No problem! He played it off well and said he just wanted to say hi. When out waitress came to the table she offered still or sparking water, to which we replied still (normally tap). As we looked around, we realized there were tables with water containers much different to ours, when we asked our waitress why we hadn't been offered that option she said it was up to us to have asked for it. It definitely started the dining experience with a sour taste in our mouth which was disappointing, especially since we were celebrating my husband's birthday - I wanted his his experience to be great. A woman in a black suit then came up to our table at which point we shared our experience thus far, including the lack of transparency, she assured the charge for the water would be removed and told us a different waiter would come up to our table for the rest of our dining experience. Shoutout to Ryan! My husband ordered the steak progressive and really enjoyed it. He had an old fashioned which was his favorite drink of the night. I ordered the half chicken, the vegetables were really oily and the chicken was dry and didn't have much flavor. The ambiance was good overall with a good view. read more

We just happened upon this place one afternoon while driving around. We stopped for drinks, enjoy the view of the valley then decided to make dinner reservations for the next night. The view is even more stunning at night. Service was excellent. Lance was on point. Always there if we needed anything , friendly and helpful. We had a small issue with our steak and he made it right. It was a busy night and this restaurant runs like a well oiled machine. The only thing that was weird, and I will never understand this, a woman was seated next to us with what looked like a baby carriage, but a closer look revealed a small dog....I was really surprised that this caliber of restaurant would allow dogs. -definitely NOT a service dog. But maybe it's a boujee LA thing. read more

Luxe view and ambiance. My friends and I were celebrating a mid day bday brunch and met for a patio reservation. The wait for our table took a good amount of time but once sat the view was spectacular in the sun. Our waiter Josh was very personable and made sure our dining experience was comfy and smooth. We did their bottom less mimosas which includes different variations which were all remarkable. Their guava and lemonade charcoal were the sweet options, but i personally loved the zingy fresh cucumber mimosa. I easily downed 3 of those. Our entrees and calamari were all pretty good. Their chicken and waffles had almost a half chicken beautifully fried served over a chunky waffle. It was certainly a nice brunch plate that could bust any hunger. The French toast too was a large thick loaf drenched in strawberries, some blackberries sprinkled, and crisped marshmallow. Easily would recommend this restaurant for an upscale dining experience. The ambiance is sunny, sociable, and curated well by their thoughtful staff. read more
