I try to be positive about every place I try, so I will say the staff is lovely, but the fare is sadly not. I ordered a simple beef taco and bean and cheese burrito, both of which came on what looked and tasted like the tortillas had been on the shelf for a good long while, for the taco, the lettuce as fresh, the cheese was good, the beef was a bit dry and again, tasted like it had been around a while but it was the super tough, stale tasting tortilla that ruined it. Same with the burrito, the beans were fine, nothing out of the ordinary, a very generous portion of cheese, but an ancient tortilla. I will say the salsas were actually good, and I would give another go if I hear that the tortillas are being made fresh. Within the last month here and the Yucca Valley location, food has been so trash. We usually just stick with the San Felipe fries and burritos. This meal was quite possibly the worst meal of our lives. So bad we laughed about it for hours. While we were waiting for our "food" we asked for guac and queso but instead received a bowl of cold shredded cheese and some sort of a flavored pudding-like product that tasted like something not resembling food. It's so hot and miss. Usually the hit comes after 9pm on the days they are open all night. Example of last 4 visit and one item ordered each time. #1 Grande Tostada with sour cream and guac on side. Visible sour cream on lettuce. You could smell and taste it ruined the appetite of person that requested on side. Also fried tortilla shell was stale, soggy and impossible to eat. #2 frresh tortilla shell. Brimming full on inside of bowl. Pico was amazing and the meats drained properly so as to not have a soggy bottom. This makes up for #1. #3 can't be any worse than #2: it was cold. The bottom was wet and soggy but everything else was spot on. #4 it's not that hard to get right they got it this time. Nope. Nothing but lettuce inside with a sprinkle of beef, beans and pico. Lettuce tastes dirty and the pico smelled sour. Tortilla was stale. Didn't even finish and will wait awhile before I go back again. Really used to love this place. Always open. Decently priced late night food. Super convenient being a J-tree local. But after five years and countless second chances, I can't do it anymore. Not usually one to complain about fast food, I have worked in the field myself and I am generally pretty understanding. But out of the past five times that I've decided "you know what, let's see if it's different", it has only declined and I have gotten sick to my stomach 4 of those times, this last time being the worst. I actually had to hop out of my car to vomit a couple hours after eating the carne asada fries. Soggy, half cooked fries, pools of grease and so bland I had to dump about seven little containers of hot sauce on it just to get some flavor that wasn't cheese. Leaving this review because I really worry about this place getting a child or elderly person severely ill from their clear lack of effort and sanitation. $18 for food poisoning just isn't worth it. I really hope this place gets their act together some day, but I will not be going back and plan on actively steering folks away from this place when they visit for their own safety. Getting sick like that on a back country hike in the National park can get you killed. It's important to keep in mind that this place makes Taco Bell look like La Isla. As user TreyZ posted in a review 7 months ago, "Mexico is shaking its head right now," but that doesn't mean you can't get a tasty rito here; every now and then the one cook who cares is working and the burritos are amazing. MY GIRLFRIEND FOUND A TOOTH IN HER TAQUITO! We visited Joshua Tree today and were planning on getting Mexican food for dinner. This location was very convenient so we went through drive through and ordered 2 orders of taquitos. Once we got out order, we parked and my girlfriend took one bite into the taquito and commented how crunchy and hard the tortilla was. I was about to dig into mine when she said "What the heck is that?" and pulled out this pea sized off-white object. She immediately asked "Is that a tooth?" At first I thought this was a piece of cartilage but after inspecting it and trying to squish it, it seemed too hard to be cartilage. I instantly felt sick to my stomach and felt guilty that I had chose to eat here. I went in to show the staff what she had found in her food and they asked if my tooth had fallen out. I explained the situation and they were in shock themselves. I got my money back but I will not be returning to this location. If this happened to me I wouldn't be as mad but I am embarrassed and feel terrible and disgusted that this happened while I was on a date. I would avoid this place if I were you. read more
