This review is strictly on the customer service at this establishment. Although our order was incorrect, it was still good food. The place was busy but manageable. Our waitress seemed to not like the fact that we sat in her section, she seemed pained to have to take our order. When I asked for straws she reached toward the dirty table behind us, picked up 2 straws left by the previous party and threw them on our table. After opening one of our straws it looked like a child had been playing with it because it appeared to be damaged. We placed our order before 2 tables in her section & our food was brought after theirs even though they had more peope in their party. When our food was finally brought to us, it was brought by a different server. They forgot to bring my daughters food and had to wait about 10 minutes for her food to come out, meanwhile our food was getting cold. I had asked the new server to bring a box and a side of ranch, she seemed to be bothered by our request, she smirked & said I'll let your server know & have her take care of you guys, this while we are still waiting on my daughters food which was an order of pancakes, eggs, bacon, & sausage. I had ordered my eggs over medium and I was brought scrambled, my sister ordered the turkey club sandwich and they brought out a chicken sandwich. Because our experience was already not a good one we decided to just eat our food rather than waiting longer to be corrected. I was planning on ordering a plate to go but we were never checked on, so I was not able to place the order. Our drink were never refilled , even though it was just ice water we all had. I was so upset with the lack of customer service that we received, that i could not even speak to the hostess. I just paid my bill without saying anything and left.. I had to go to another restaurant to order food to go beause I was not about to wait another 30+ minutes to get a simple togo order. I like the food here but I am not sure if I will be back. Decided to give this place another chance because I thought my first visit might have just been a fluke. We stopped in over the 4th of July weekend around 11:50 a.m. The restaurant was fairly empty, but the hostess seated us right by the front door despite several open booths. I politely asked if we could move and was told no because "it was about to get busy." Thankfully, our waiter came over and moved us anyway. The food took a long time to arrive, the ketchup and hot sauce bottles at our table were empty, and we had to find replacements ourselves. To top it off, the staff was cleaning around us while talking about how much they had made in tips, which felt unprofessional. The food was decent, but the service was disappointing. Considering it has a large and diverse ingredient list for a diner menu, Black Bear continues to impress me with the tastiness (and portions) of their food. My wife, her mom, and I intentionally stopped into this one in Yucca Valley as we were heading to Joshua Tree, and found the portions (value) and service to be really good. The hostess directed us to a comfortable booth, where soon our friendly server, Jessica, came right over to give us water and time to peruse the newsprint menu. The last time I was at a Black Bear, had determined to try one of their hungry bear dinner entrees. Portions are large, so knew to only order two entrees (since bringing home leftovers was not an option). We wanted to share everything, and Jessica brought out an extra plate without us even asking. Refillable fountain Pepsi was $3.99, with the rest of us being fine with water. The 4-piece homestyle fried chicken ($22.99) was half a chicken, with a very crunchy, non-greasy coating. The meat was juicy. It came with OK fries and a switched out side salad (very large for a side salad, using very fresh vegetables), instead of coleslaw (which still ended up coming out, and was enjoyed). It's a very large meal for one person, and good for the three of us. The Full Course Bear's Dinner of Slow-Cooked Pot Roast ($21.59) comes with a choice of soup or salad and two additional sides (onion rings and mashed potatoes in my case). Soup of the day was potato bacon, and it tasted good: thick with chunks of potato and real pieces of bacon. The pot roast was very tender (close to being mealy), and the brown gravy was very heavy (ended up being a great dip for the fried chicken). The onion rings were excellent, with the mashed potatoes being very hearty. All of it was prepared from frozen, so had a little bit of that frozen dinner quality, but were fine with it since we were sharing a little of everything and it had been prepared well. We had a bit of a drive left, so made sure we used the washrooms which were easy to find and clean. The check is brought to the table, but needs to be brought to the front to pay. It gave me a chance to checkout their dessert/pie display: it's the one thing that doesn't impress when compared to other diners specializing in pies. It's clear that management doesn't expect the staff to nickel/dime everything. For all that we got, there were only three charges on the check. The service was great (I went on a Thursday morning so it wasn't busy). The food was good and the portions are huge. My family all enjoyed their dishes. I got the biscuits and gravy with thick cut bacon and they were pretty good--the bacon was the best part though. I also really enjoyed their freshly squeezed orange juice. The ambiance was okay. I stopped here for dinner on the way to Joshua Tree and was glad that I did! The food was delicious and reasonably priced. We ordered the tri-tip and the California burger. My advice would be to order a little more rare than what you're looking for because they overcooked it a bit. We ordered beer and wine, both of which unfortunately came out in hot glasses as if they had just been removed from the dishwasher, but they were otherwise good. I have been to Black Bear Diner in other locations before. The menu was more memorable than the foods because it looked exactly like a newspaper. Anyways, we ordered fried chicken steak, tri-tip, Joe's omelet, and The volcano. Originally, I wanted the corned beef hash, but the waitress came back and said they didnt have it. I switched to The volcano. Everyone's else foods came out except for mine. It took a really long time for my foods to get delivered. It was their mistake for not having it. So they should have priority my order, but i guess they didnt. Other customers at other tables that came after got their foods. It wasn't that busy so I am not sure why they took so long. Luckily, our server was nice and professional about it. She apologized and checked up on us. The foods were ok. The tri-tip wasn't so tender. Mash potatoe was a bit too salty. The minestrone soup was good. The pancakes were yummy and the biscuits were great. The omelet was ok. No comment on the chicken fried steak since I didnt try it. The website says you're open until 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, but apparently that's more of a suggestion than an actual business hour. We arrived before 9:30 p.m. on a Friday and were greeted with, "Are you the pickup order?" When we said no, it became clear that dining in was no longer an option, despite the posted hours. If you're going to stop seating customers well before closing, please update your hours accordingly. We specifically chose Black Bear Diner for dinner and were turned away despite arriving before the advertised closing time. We arrived hungry, expecting dinner. Instead, we got a lesson in creative interpretations of "open until 10." The whole experience felt less like being welcomed into a restaurant and more like encountering a nightclub bouncer guarding the last biscuit in the building. read more

I am not much for breakfast places and I think this is why. The service was friendly, attentive and kind but I am just not a fan of food like this. I got lunch type food but it was so dry and not pleasant and my husband really wanted something on the dinner menu that could not be served when we went and he was so bummed. I think he did not love what he ended up getting and they were out of fresh veggies (what???) so we got canned green beans that just did not appeal to me. We have been occasionally going to the Black Bear diner ever since it opened several years ago, and the experience has always been disappointing. This should be the nicest diner in town and it should be busy. It's a beautiful building and the interior is great, so what's the problem? First of all, what's with the B grade in the window? The San Bernardino health department has found health violations continuously over the last year. That should be the kiss of death to restaurants. In fact I've never seen any restaurant with less than an A rating. So why haven't they cared enough to fix this? Most restaurants who lose their A rating fix it immediately so they can have that health department approval back in their window. Yet this has been in their rating for a year. The food could be so much better. They have a great menu, the prices are fair. . I ordered a steak tonight which looked good, but tasted terrible. The salad was dried iceberg lettuce, pretty inedible. The green beans were so overcooked that they have turned to mush. My husband stopped ordering the regular fries because he said they tasted like wood and now he orders the sweet potato fries with his patty melt. He never finishes that sandwich because it's just not an enjoyable meal. We have waited to be seated for long periods and I have seen other people walk out because they were tired of waiting and they head over to the IHOP next-door. Honestly, the staff looks bored indefinitely not happy to see us. I don't wanna run this place down. I have a soft spot for it and I wish it would succeed. But it just feels like no one cares. Then i moved to Napa and found just a mile away from my new home and found the same great food there. And now that im in the Palm Springs area was so glad to just hear of one near by. The food was ok but the service was terrible. Never got checked on to refill drinks. There was only 2 tables and it took an hour to get our food. Stood up front and waited 15 minutes just for someone to come to the front so we could pay our bill. The waitress said she finally got a hostess in to help! They don't have enough employees to accommodate having guests and to top it all off the walls, floors and tables were all dirty. Whoever The manager is for this location needs to be fired.
