Four of us came to Algoberto's Taco Shop for a late lunch around 2:00PM after hiking around Joshua Tree. We arrived hungry and everything on their large menu of combo plates, specials, burritos, tacos, etc. sounded delicious. The cashier was super personable, greeted us and encouraged us to take our time while reviewing the menu. She said her favorite meat was the cabeza (cow cheek), so I knew I at least had to get that! After ordering, we helped ourselves to the salsa bar in the 10 minutes or so that our food was being prepared. We learned that all their salsas are homemade and there were plenty to choose from! The cashier gladly stepped away from the counter to explain the differences between the green and red salsas in terms of cooking method and spice level. We really appreciated her taking the time. I liked the light green tomatillo one the best... it had a fresh herby flavor with the perfect acidity to offset the savory meats. + CABEZA TACO ($2.50): I was speechless as I ate this... it was impeccable. The beef literally melted in my mouth and was SO tender. This didn't even need any salsa; the meat completely shined on its own! I could have easily eaten a whole box of these, which is saying a lot, since I normally prefer leaner cuts of meat. + AL PASTOR COMBO ($14): The pork was very heavily spiced and had a fair amount of heat to it, topped with cilantro and onion. I wish it came with some pineapple on top to add a little sweetness, since that is usually my favorite element of an al pastor taco. While I would have liked the actual flavor of the pork to be more apparent, the tacos were bursting with flavor, were about double the size of a street taco and came generously filled. The combo included a side of rice and beans which both tasted homemade. Everything was piping hot, so much so that I could barely hold my tacos, but no complaints there! I recommend this independent taco spot if you're around Joshua Tree. We'd just suggest sticking to the tacos as one person in my group was the only one to order enchiladas and sadly did not love them. 4.25 stars. read more

We were visiting a friend in 29 Palms and we wanted to have lunch and I googled Mexican food on yelp and of course I got hits on several in Yucca Valley. For me a Mexican restaurant has to have a salsa bar and this one at Algoberto's exceeded our expectations. I was told that all the salsa are made fresh daily. They had a great selection of meats and many choices to eat them. My husband and had chicken burrito and let me tell you, they are very generous with the meat and there are no rice and bean fillers like other Mexican restaurants. We have been eating Mexican food in San Diego, and Riverside county and I'm not lying when I tell you this food was so well seasoned that you don't even need any salsa on it to enjoy it. As we were leaving 29 Palms we decided to go back and try the Large Asada and chicken tacos for dinner. We enjoyed them so much that we ordered 2 more to go with toppings on the side. I wish they had a restaurant in more locations in Southern California. We highly recommend this restaurant for those who enjoy good Mexican food made with love. We will definitely be back next year. The staff was also nice and very helpful answering our questions, I don't remember the young lady during lunch but Deni took our order for dinner, he was very kind and generous to us. I was craving burritos on my way back to the desert from Big Bear... Behold this golden beauty Algoberto's! We ordered two chicken burritos, I added beans to mine. The staff was really nice and the ambiance is what you expect of a family owned taco shop. For just about $12, this burrito is pretty big *excuse my giant bites taken before remembering a photo lol* The chicken is unlike any other chicken burrito I've had at a shop. It's marinated and seasoned perfectly, then add some delicious salsas from the salsa bar and wow!!! Explosion of flavors, spice, everything delicious that you were looking for! My only regret today was ordering a medium Jamaica Agua instead of a large. Tucked away in a strip mall next to a smoke shop, Algoberto's is really, really good. As others have said, the carnitas are really good and one taco makes for a generous lunch; these are not the smaller "street tacos". The burritos are huge as well. They have a salsa bar and if I have a nit to pick it might be that there isn't too much variety between the salsas, they all tend towards the hot/spicy side of the equation. If you order chips they're fried to order and really, really good, too. There are maybe 8 booths and a handful of tables and this place is almost always crowded with city workers and others who know where the food is good and a great value. My boyfriend and I were in the area for a little anniversary weekend getaway and we were looking for an easy dinner for our last night and this place came up. What caught my eye on the specials menu was a chile relleno burrito cause I've been meaning to try one. The place was easy to get to off the main road and there was plenty of parking. I was happy to see that I could still order the chile relleno burrito and my BF saw there was a chile verde burrito and he decided to get that. We also got 2 horchatas since why not. The horchata was smooth and hit the spot on a warm evening. My chile relleno burrito was DELICOUS. After I cut it open I loved seeing how cheesy it was and just had to take a picture. The burrito is simple and just had the chile relleno, refried beans, and rice but I usually only eat half a burrito and save the other half but the burrito was so good I finished it all for the night. My BF also said his burrito had a creeping spice to it and was super filling for him. Overall it was a good choice for our last night in Joshua Tree. We're definitely coming back to the area again and this place will be on our list to eat at! read more

Because this looked like a hole in the wall restaurant, I was a little wary but the food was AMAZING. Our food came quickly, the service was great, and the food was extremely fresh and flavorful. I got the chicken tacos (5 for $5.75) and my friend got the chicken burrito with guac and cheese -- they were both AMAZING and very filling. This place had great reviews so decided to give them a try on the way to the campground at Joshua Tree last weekend. This no-frills place seems like a small mom-and-pop shop with a few tables, and popular for take-out orders. Lady at the front with glasses was sweet and called everyone "honey." She initially forgot my BF's horchata but after he reminded her she got it right away. It was refreshing with real cinnamon and not too sweet. She also apologized for the long wait (we waited about 10-15 minutes for our food which was very reasonable since there were quite a few people after 8 p.m. and there was only one cook). I got the 2 carnitas tacos plate which came with rice and beans, my BF got the California burrito which comes with carne asada, cheese, fries, and tomatoes (maybe this was pico de gallo but my BF said it was straight tomatoes). The carnitas in my tacos was insanely crispy, delicious, and plentiful. Wow!! It was probably one of my top three carnitas experiences, and living in Southern California my whole life, I have eaten a ton of Mexican food. My BF said his burrito was really good, except the cheese was not melted all the way (but still delicious). I tried a bite and thought it was the best California burrito I've had outside of San Diego, and I liked that it wasn't greasy or too heavy. Chips were decent but the salsas were amazing and actually spicy!! They had a verde/green one, rojo/red one, and what appeared to be habanero. They were all decently hot with a great kick except one was mild. The salsa bar also had cucumbers with chili flakes which were good. All in all, this place isn't the fastest but that is because it seems like everything is cooked fresh to order. My carnitas tacos were initially so hot I had to wait a few minutes to eat them. But would definitely come back next time I'm in the area to try one of their many other (reasonably priced) options. They had a special on the chalkboard, 5 street tacos for $8.75 (what a deal!) which I wish I had gotten instead since the carnitas tacos were so good, although it may have been too much food for me at the time. One last thing to note - there is a sign at the cashier saying there is a 4% charge on credit card orders, so bring cash if possible. I definitely recommend giving this local spot a try! read more

My husband and I decided on venturing out from our usual dining at Pappy & Harriet's. I'm am so glad we did! The food was amazing! I ordered three tacos as I expected the normal street tacos I am accustomed to, however these tacos are big and filled generously with meat. They were hard to finish. I tried the cabeza, lengua and fish. All three were so good, but the cabeza is outstanding. My mouth is watering thinking of it. My husband had carne asada nachos and a crispy Tripa taco. The tripas are delicious. I kept picking at his taco because they were so good. Nachos were basic. The tortillas taste homemade, you can taste the corn and they are soft and moist. I had to search with a magnifying glass to find any beef in my enchiladas and I ordered three, two red and one green. It was all bell peppers and cheese. My sister ordered a shrimp burrito and we literally counted 4 shrimp and not jumbo in the whole burrito! Oh and the shrimp tasted like dirt so they definitely don't clean their shrimp properly.
