The staff was attentive and able to help us squeeze in a few more Bar Harbor activities. They provided some recommendations for sights and restaurants which added to our trip. The included breakfasts typically had 2 options: sweet and savory. I went with sweet each morning, so I started my days with a piece of french toast or pancakes. The food was exactly what I hoped for to carry me through a day of hiking. The rooms were clean and there was more than enough room for my wife and I without tripping over one another. At breakfast we typically spoke with the other guests to share stories and plan our day's events by offering recommendations. The inn was a few blocks removed from downtown, which became a nice walk to and from dinner. We preferred not being on top of downtown to let us see a little more before going to and from dinner. read more

I had to cancel my reservations for my upcoming trip and did so within the hotel's cancellation policy as noted on their website. They never refunded my deposit which was 1/2 the cost of my stay! I tried calling the hotel but could never get through - the phone just rang off the hook until a message came on announcing that the voice mail box was full and then disconnected. Seriously!? Too bad I didn't read reviews on other sights first before making my reservation because apparently this has happened to other people as well. All I can say is, book at your risk. read more

I made and canceled my reservation through Hotels.com and did so well within the hotels cancellation policy. My deposit was not refunded. Hotels.com tried to call the hotel but no one answered the phone. I called and left a voicemail message explaining that I had to cancel. my reservation was for May and I was calling in January so I was well within the cancellation policy. I requested a call back to confirm they had received my cancellation request and would be refunding my deposit. No call back. I tried several more times but no answer and their voicemail box was full. Extremely frustrating to say the least. I contacted my credit card company to initiate a dispute to get my deposit back. Obviously I can't review the hotel in terms of my experience in staying there. I can only review my experience with canceling my reservation. And based on that, I would not recommend this property. read more

You're getting way more than you pay for when you stay at the summer retreat of the 19th century summer retreat of the Austrian ambassador. The history here is awesome, and it has been renovated very well throughout the years. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are cozy and clean, and the breakfast is great to get you going on a more hike or exploring the town. You're situated right in the middle of Bar Harbor just a few steps away from anything, and an extremely short drive from Acadia National Park. About a 15 minute drive from the inn to the top of Cadillac Mtn. for the epic sunrise! read more

I did not enjoy my stay at this B & B. I had the Lile Marlene room. The bathroom was small. The shower was the smallest I'd ever been in. The room was not comfortable at all. The chairs were damaged. The bed was somewhat comfortable. The entire place needs updating. Breakfasts were simple and good. Staff were friendly. Location is convenient to walk to town. Historic Inn within walking distance of Bar Harbor. Our room was clean, comfortable and had a spacious bathroom with a jetted tub. There was also a gas fireplace and a small refrigerator. Glasses, cutlery, crockery, ice, coffee etc. were available in the kitchen and we availed ourselves of the microwave to heat some lobster macaroni we bought at the local grocery store. Stayed here while in Bar Harbor for my cousin's wedding. Friendly check-in, onsite parking, fresh breakfast cooked to order included, friendly staff, clean room, great water pressure in the shower, wifi. Walking distance to the downtown. More reasonable in price compared to the larger hotels in the area. Our room (#1, right off a living room on the first floor) was nice but a bit cramped, due to the large 4 poster bed being right in the middle of the room. No closet, but a bar by the window to hang clothes. I would have liked to have tried the jacuzzi tub, but was too tired after every evening to partake. The funky floral couch and old TV in the jacuzzi tub room was a bit odd, perhaps the area could be better used as a sitting area for people to get ready (ie do makeup, iron clothes, etc.). There is a separate bathroom with a toilet, 2 sinks, and a shower/tub as well. With so many cute little B&Bs in the area, I'm not sure if I would return to Castlemaine (would probably like to check out another place, just for variety's sake), but I have no problem recommending it. read more

A year later, this is our second visit to Castlemaine, and we are still very pleased. This year we are staying in room #7, which has to have the most wonderful shower in the state. Very firm mattress so be aware. Excellent staff, very warm and friendly but not overly so. Respectful of the guests. The breakfast are creative, I think maybe a notch up on the finesse scale compared to last year. Castlemaine is shabby chic, comfortable but not modern (except that shower!). Most of the guests are adult couples, no children. Wish they took pets. Still my favorite and I will be back next year. read more

It is so busy in Bar Harbor that walking makes it very important if you want to get around. From this inn, you can walk everywhere. The people are so nice. It is an old Victorian building and it seems like it. It is not a modern updated interior, so be prepared for that. read more

Great people, very clean rooms, comfy beds, room had a porch AND hot tub and a shower and is in walking distance to most places. I am completely satisfied with my choice to stay here. We had plenty of room and closet space. Parking and breakfast included, very reasonably priced. The only slight disappointment was that there weren't any mirrors in the room that allowed you to see below your neck, which makes it hard to determine if your outfit works (I know I sound ridiculous) and lack of vanity space. Affordable and clean B&B. There is nothing really special about this place, but if you're out seeing the island every day and not spending a lot of time in your room it's a nice option. We stayed two nights in the Ribbon Room on the second floor. Since it was the end of October, an electric heater had already been running in the room when we entered, so it felt very welcoming. There was a canopied bed, a couple of antique chairs, hardwood floor, and spacious bathroom. I found the bed comfortable enough, but it was a little firm for my wife. The inn and room were exceptionally clean. The staff was very friendly, and the hot breakfasts were fresh and tasty. We compared prices at various inns and motels in Bar Harbor, and this one really had the best value for the money, just $80/night. read more

This place has the most crazy big print wallpaper I've seen for a long time. It also has retro in-room facilities including CRT TVs and (yes, really) VCR/DVD players. There's wifi available throughout the building, so it's not all technology from the early 90s! One very nice idea at Castlemaine is bookcase after bookcase of old and new DVD and VHS cassette movies in the common areas. There is a player in every room (we had two!) and with the huge selection of movies available, we had no problem relaxing after a long hike in Acadia National Park, snuggling up in homemade quilts and watching movies long gone from the theatres. The lace netting over the 4 poster bed is also rather special, along with everything we could hope to want in a Honeymoon Suite at the low price: - working fireplace with duraflame logs provided, king bed, jacuzzi tub, private deck, love seat and several comfortable chairs. They also served home cooked breakfasts, which varied each day. The hotel is well located being only a 5 minute walk from the center of Bar Harbor, has a supermarket within a minute or 2 walk, and close to Acadia too. Dan (the owner) was extremely knowledgable of Acadia and was able to recommend a perfect route based on what we were looking for. Parking is a bit tight, with some spaces just across the road by the local launderette, but there is a space for each room. read more

We have just returned from a whirlwind 2 week trip of the northeast, and had our first experience with US B&B's, in comparison to UK B&B's which we found to be all about the same, B&B's widely differed in the US. I have three main criteria in which I first pick a place to stay and the same three criteria in which i will review a place. The three are as follows: 1. Cleanliness....if there is a hair ANYWHERE...I will freak out 2. Closeness to attractions...I preferably want to walk to see what there is to see 3. Other (including cuteness, breakfast, room size, fireplace, other reviews) Bar Harbor Castlemaine Inn Detail ~~~~ 1. Super clean! One day they forgot our shower floor towel/mat thing, thats ok 2. Easy walk to the cute main town of Bar Harbor and a quick drive to Acadia! 3. Other: a. There was a bit of confusion when we wanted to check in, the lady at the desk seemed a bit chaotic and disorganized, she was unable to handle more then one thing at a time. She told us to wait a minute for us to check in while she dealt with some other things, that was fine so we waited...and waited...and waited...then when another group came in to check in, she checked them in??? So we went to ask her if it was our turn and she said...."do you have a question"...we were like "no, we want to check in", she said "oh you can just do that in the morning"....WHAT?? we were waiting like 30 minutes?? oh well, we chalked it up to the slower Maine lifestyle. b. Room was nice, a lot of flowery wallpaper, but what can you expect. Nice fireplace with doors, so our whole room didnt smell like smoke (NICE!) bed was fine c. Bathroom was TINY...couldnt move in the shower, but that is fine, not one of our criteria to have large bathrooms...(as long as they are clean see "1" above) d. Breakfast: read the Inn's website carefully it does say CONTINENTAL breakfast, so do not expect any lavish spread, which was fine by us. e. I normally try to stay to places that have some reviews, but there were a TON of B&Bs and Inns in Acadia/Bar Harbor, I might have done some more research would I have known there were soo many options, as such I am not sure how much of a value this B&B really was. stayed 2 nights in June 2007 We choose this B&B because of the whirlpool tub! We stayed in suite #1 right on the main floor of the Inn. It had a large bed, no closet, TV with VCR, DVD and cable. The bathroom had double sinks and a tub shower. Right inside the room was a few steps down to another door that enclosed a whirlpool tub for two, a loveseat, fireplace, mini fridge and another TV with cable, VCR and DVD. The whirlpool was fantastic after long hikes!! The room was very clean but the bedroom seemed cramped. The entrance to the room was right off a main common area which was fine for us as there weren't many people at the Inn when we were, but I suppose it could become noisy if it was a full house. Also on that level was the administration offices, another common area, one other guest room and the breakfast room. We skipped breakfast the first morning to sleep in (served until 9 am) only to have housekeeping knock on our door at 9:30 am (there were no do not disturb signs to be found). Breakfast was basically a continental buffet with no hot item choices. We didn't get to see any of the other rooms in the house, because we didn't venture up to the second and third levels. One of the Innkeepers, I don't remember his name, he was very tall and lanky, was extremely helpful with giving us restaurant recommendations, etc. Plenty of parking on-site. read more

Actually more of a B&B than an inn. We were met by a friendly lady named Bobbie who went out of her way to accommodate some special needs that we had. Dan was very helpful and was full of good information about the area. We took his suggestion and did a driving tour of Acadia Nat'l Park. Stayed 3 nights in the Honeymoon Suite for our 25th Anniversary recently. Very clean, quiet and private. Fireplace, whirlpool tub, private deck, you name it. Dan had picked out a very nice champagne for us based on our tastes and had it chilling for us in our room when we arrived. Huge room, giant bathroom with both a sink and a separate vanity so there was plenty of room for my wife and I to get ready for the day.Breakfasts varied daily and all were delicious. The entire staff was helful and friendly and Dan can give you great suggestions on everything to do both in Acadia and in Bar Harbor itself. Castlemaine is a charming inn in Bar Harbor, ME. Our room, the Secret Room, was small, but immaculate and lovely. There was a small balcony, a sitting area, a very comfortable bed, and a small bathroom. Everything was decorated beautifully. We enjoyed breakfast each morning, served by a sweet young lady. The only reason I did not give this wonderful inn 5 stars is that the parking is tight and we had some issues with WiFi. The innkeepers were great and very helpful. As others have said the inn is walking distance to many shops and restaurants. I am sure we will return! read more

I cannot say enough about this place. It is a wonderful bed and breakfast. When we arrived the woman on duty was very kind gave us tons of info on restaurants and things to do even had a print out of her favorite ones and descriptions with price ranges. She kindly showed us around the common areas and on to our room. The room was perfect for two. It had its own little balcony, a closet, a fridge and a VCR/DVD combo. There are many movies to choose from in the common areas all of which is free. The first night I did not sleep well because the mattress was too firm for my taste. I kindly asked the housekeeper if they had a mattress topper that they could add. She was happy to find out and when we arrived back from Acadia it was there. I did not think it would happen so that honestly made my entire stay. Breakfast is served restaurant style and you get to pick from two options. It was delicious! The inn is very well kept and was in walking distance to downtown. The only time we needed our car was when we were in Acadia. The staff was always willing to answer any and all questions we had. I definitely recommend staying here and when we come back to Bar Harbor we will stay here again. read more

We made the spontaneous decision to get married in Bar Harbor two weeks ago and while I was frantically looking for accommodations, I came across two available rooms at Castlemaine Inn. I booked them right away and emailed them, asking if they had any recommendations for locations at which to have our very short civil ceremony. Not only did Bobbi let us know that we were welcome to have it in their parlor, but she also put me in touch with the owner Dede to discuss having the ceremony on the property of a nearby hotel. We went ahead and did that and it was absolutely wonderful. Bobbi also suggested a fantastic restaurant to visit for our wedding night dinner. Her help with setting up all the urgent details made everything so much easier. As for the inn itself: Generously sized rooms, very clean, excellent breakfast, welcoming atmosphere, incredible staff. We loved hanging out on the front porch! We were especially touched and pleasantly surprised when the staff was kind enough to gift us a beautiful memento for our wedding. I definitely recommend Castlemaine Inn as the perfect place in a great location to enjoy your trip to Bar Harbor! read more

We stayed in the honeymoon suite and it was nicely appointed and had an extra blanket in case you got cold at night. We had soft and ample linens. The suite was very clean. The two person jacuzzi was a nice touch. Breakfast was yummy. The price was pretty good considering it was high season there. I'm looking forward to staying there again. read more

Our stay there was a very pleasant experience. From the first instant we walked through the door, nothing but sincere friendliness!! The inn has a wonderful charm to it and it's within walking distance of everything in town. Also, the owner is there every morning and is well-versed in Acadia National Park. If you are thinking of doing anything in the Park, he is the man to see. We wanted a moderately difficult hike of a few miles with views of the forest and water, and he ga e us the perfect route to follow! All in all it was a perfect place for our anniversary getaway! We were there in August at what the staff told us was high season and there were more than a few tourists in town but nothing horrible. I would say a crowd of people good-sized enough to make things interesting with the people-watching you can do during lunch or dinner. Castlemaine Inn is now a favorite of mine and I hope to be able to go back!! read more

Nice inn but nothing special, especially with so many inns in the area for the same price. The place was very clean and quiet and had a great location (right near the main supermarket in the area and a 10 minute walk max to downtown Bar Harbor). But, the room was very tiny, and the biggest problem was definitely the shower because I kept on bumping my head on the window panel. I'm not a fan of B&Bs but enjoyed this one so much, I'd go back a second time. We stayed four nights in the Sunshine Suite which is one of the larger rooms at this particular inn. Our room lived up to its name - light and airy even on overcast days. We enjoyed the little balcony off the sitting area on the days the sun was shining. Our suite, like the rest of the property, was immaculately clean throughout our stay. We appreciated the helpful, friendly staff (Dan Daigle, Bobbi, Jill) who provided great advice for sight-seeing, activities, and restaurants. There was piping hot coffee ready by about 6:30 a.m. (with large to-go cups which we appreciated!) and the continental breakfast was ready shortly after 7:00 even though the advertised serving time was 7:30. If a big honkin' breakfast is a requirement for you, this is not your place. However we were pleased with the options provided and everything was fresh and plentiful. The menu included: hot and cold cereals, scones, muffins, bagels, bread for toasting, hard-boiled eggs, a variety of fresh chilled fruit, juice, coffee, and tea. One final note, the inn is conveniently located in town, within walking distance to just about everything including bike rental shops where we rented bikes for touring in Acadia National Park. As noted in other reviews, the one major grocery store is near the inn and there is also a laundromat just down the block. read more
