This is near my house so I anticipate that I will be here again. My crazy new to NOLA behind went here on Good Friday and packed is not the word. I wanted to get some boiled seafood to go with the rice and beans we had at home. I loved the shrimp seasoning but I was only so so on the quality of the shrimp, they seemed a little gummy to me. Also, not being from NOLA, it would be great if they could have a little more order to the menu. They have signs everywhere and not in any particular order. i understand with places like this the pricing is highly influenced by what type of season local fisherman are having and are pricing. So a standardized menu is not an option. However, if they could group similar things together it would help people to make informed ordering decisions and therefore be more satisfied with the order. For instance, I ended up ordering boiled shrimp with head on. I don't know if that is all they had but I would have preferred to have them head off because it doesn't make since to me to pay for something you are not going to eat. Anyway I took what I got because they were so busy and because I wasn't sure there was another option. A clear menu would have at least given me peace of mind. read more

This is easily my fave dive this year. The authenticity and deliciousness of the oyster po' boy, freshest quality of the seafood served up fresh, its patrons seemingly enraptured by the quality of the food, as though the food is part of their addiction to this business, confirms my assessment I've responded to a business this way before and I know when I have, it's become my regular place of patronage. It's my first trip here and tried the crab too. Honestly I have not had as fresh crab ever since my last trip to Asia. The tamale to this crab is sweet and tasty just like places I've had in Asia. Too bad we don't have Yelp in Southeast Asia yet and would be more than happy to jump on this when the time comes. At any rate, not even the East Coast can match up to the freshness and flavor of the crab here and I am immediately harkened back to my favorite restaurants in Asia and LA and craving their preparations of this amazing crab. If I'm rating this restaurant from a sheer dining experience, it was subpar at best. The order process is absolutely chaotic. Patrons are bottle necked into a tiny area right next to the kitchen. It was hard to decipher the people who had paid, and the ones waiting to order. The dining area was small and outdated. If you are looking for fine dining, this is not the place for you. Having said that, given the chaotic atmosphere, they run a very tight operation. Everyone working was very attentive and helpful. No one seems to be slacking in the place. They accommodated a very large group during lunch time. I had heard people rave about the seafood here, but I'm allergic to shellfish, so I couldn't taste the crab or shrimp. The fried fish was decent. The cheeseburger po boy was not that great honestly. The patties were thin and dry, and the bread was a little tough. Would I come back? Maybe if I was in the area. Great place for a po boy and fresh seafood away from the French quarter. I have a friend who's parents are from this area of New Orleans and it came highly recommended. So when I was driving through, my family and I decided to stop and we weren't disappointed. I got the half and half (oyster and shrimp) my daughter got the shrimp 10 inch. When I visited they didn't have the normal French bread due to the baker not being able to produce, so they made our sandwiches on pistolette (sp?) bread. The sandwich was still delicious!!! We didn't finish but were able to save it and continue eating on our drive back to Houston. We also ordered several pounds of boiled crawfish to eat out side at the picnic tables because you can't beat the price of 3.50 per lbs. Crawfish review: I'm generally hesitant to eat crawfish that has not been prepared by a family member, but on friday I needed to find seafood and castnets has such good reviews I thought it had to be good. I was wrong. First, the crawfish were very dirty, I don't think they even tried to rinse them. Some were spicy, some were bland, so there is no consistency between batches. The garlic was only slightly cooked, so they put it in at the end of the boil. I'm not sure how it would add any flavor if it's not in there. I became nauseated soon after eating them, and vomited later. My coworkers said that they smelled off, I should have listened. There are many different parts of Castnets and if you don't know what you are doing it can be overwhelming and confusing. The fried seafood is fine, just fine. I think people like it just because it has been there for a while and is familiar. Locals don't generally leave their comfort zone. This place was crazy busy, but the orders come up pretty fast, it's pretty much a take out place, but there is an eat in room. There are two parts, one a seafood market, the other a seafood take out. The po boy I had was a oyster and shrimp combo, excellent, and I also tried the gumbo, also excellent and priced right.
