I lived her my entire life and I never knew this place existed. Dog friendly which was a plus! Located in the redwoods of Castro valley, you have a nice little drive to get there. There was a ton of parking and a ton of lots to choose from. They give you a saw on your way in and a map with all the prices and trees. The trees cost the same regardless of the price. A small cedar and a large cedar will be the same price. You can wander, take pictures, and cut your tree. It is such a fun family activity and I can't wait to go every year now. The trees start at around $125 so it is pricey but you are supporting a local family business! The owner was so kind to help me tie the tree to my car too! read more

How is it that I lived in the Bay Area my whole entire life and did not know about this gem. We went to go chop down a tree, but because we were two weeks before Christmas, they were actually having a sale on the pre-cut trees, which were - I believe the Douglas fir(I'm not a tree concierge) since these were pre-cut they were all 50% off. So we ended up going with that and getting a nine footer for like 45 bucks. He also gave us a deal on a tree stand. They loaded everything up for us. Fun experience to look for a tree and cut it down with the whole family. We took family pictures as well that all came out amazing. So easy to find location, they lend u a saw and you pay on your way out. Cut your own Christmas trees in Eastbay. We went to half moon bay last year for trees and this Castro valley Tree Farm is only 30 minutes away vs an hour. It's also an easy drive and not as steep, windy, and narrow as our location last year. Very much appreciated for my old, underpowered manual transmission Mazda. They give you maps for different lots and tree types, they also provide bow saws in the front. We brought our own chainsaw this year, sawing the trunk is no problem but the problem we had last year was removing some of the lower branches on the trunks before cutting it down, it was hard to get the saw in at all the weird angles. The more secluded lots with less people are farther from the front but the netting machine is at the very front lot. We didn't need the netting so it was fine for us to go farther. You pay when you leave and they accept credit cards. Big tip for anyone doing this the first time, strap the tree backwards on the roof of your vehicle! Trunk side facing forward! After the prior year where we had to wait a very long time, for 2020 we came bright and early on Black Friday to get our tree! No line, no wait! We were in and out in less than 20 minutes! We brought our own electric saw because I'm married to a Marine, which is basically an adult boy scout so they are very prepared with tools and stuff. Fresh trees are the best! I made some swag door wreaths with my lower branches and the tree is lighting up our house! Because it's so fresh and probably doesn't even know that it's been cut yet, it's barely even drank any water (unlike Home Depot trees). In the future, I think I will drive further into the back lots because the front lots have trees that haven't grown back yet. Okay, this farm is a wonderful experience for the whole family! Do yourself a favor, bring the family, pack a picnic or snacks and make an adventure of it. The employees there are just lovely and very helpful, they provide you a map, saw and twine as you enter. There are several areas to wander in search of your tree; it's about a 2 mile slow drive through the ranch if you want to see all of the areas. They accept credit cards- a plus Now the only downsides/cautions: 1: There is poison oak along some of the outlying areas and road edges. This is a working tree farm, in California, soooo it's kind of par for the course but now you've been cautioned. "Leaves of three, Let them be", easily avoided just keep an extra eye on children. 2: I don't know if it is due to the drought, but we had a difficult time finding the size tree we wanted for the price point this year (approx $130/any size out the door). This is our first time cutting our own Christmas tree and it was a fun experience here at Castro Valley Tree Farm. My husband and I came here around 9am when they opened between 8am to 5pm. It was not too crowded when we went. We saw lots of baby trees left and not much tall trees to choose from. We almost got our 10ft, but as we turned away for a minute to see our other options... another family came to claim it :( So we ended up with this 8ft fluffy tree and later realized the top was not grown out fully like how it did for the rest of the tree. Since it was our first time we still have more to learn. They issue you a map when you enter and provide a saw for you to cut your tree. Only confusing part was in the map it stared Douglas Fir in certain areas but as we pulled up, all signs say Douglas Fir. All trees are priced by variety but not by size, so if you want a behemoth tree, it won't cost more! Saws are provided upon entrance and payment collected via drive through otw out. IT'S DOG FRIENDLY. There are different types of trees if you're into standing out instead of the usual Douglas Fir, you can find it here. There are lots of trees in the 5ft-7ft height, and a good handful of extra tall trees in the back Lot E. Covid-19 & Service: masks required bc they're good human beings who don't want to facilitate spreading disease to your grandpa while celebrating the holidays. Lots of hanisani and sani wipe downs of card readers/communal objects. For a good time: Go early! It's a single lane road;the later you go, the more traffic there will be, the worst time you will have. When the traffic backs up, it becomes a hazard and the police can close operations. Bring work gloves and a measuring tape. Cut down your tree, load it, then go back to take photos. Lastly, have some holiday cheer. Local Christmas tree farm that I never really knew existed. The process is super simple. There's different lots labeled, they give u a map when u enter the parking lot and give u a sAw if u don't have one. Each lot is labeled with type of tree and it's a set price regardless of size. Then u can drive down and figure out what type of tree u want. We found the more popular and larger lots is towards the end. It's about a 2 mile stretch of road. You would think the task of cutting down your own tree is daunting but it was actually quite quick and easy. The actual cutting took a few seconds (the diameter log of tree is actually quite small). We got one giant 10ft Monterey Pine! First time we can get a big tree for a reasonable price. It actually didn't fit In our home so we had to cut off two feet from the bottom. Should have measured and cut off two feet before lifting up on car and carrying around. Would have saved us from carrying another 15lbs. Great place if you want to cut down your own Christmas tree! Came here a few weeks ago and everyone had a great time! There were lots and lots of lots full of Christmas tree, so lots of selection. Seems everyone went the day after Thanksgiving and cut down a bunch in the first few lots. We went on Saturday afternoon and had to go farther to find a taller, fuller, greener tree. We probably spent 15-20 minutes to saw down the tree as we got a slightly larger (probably 7-8") tree. It was hard work, but satisfying. It was also nice that they provided the saw and string for free and could also net it for you too if you needed. My only issue is the tree was not as fragrant as I had hoped even though it was fresh and they mostly had Douglas Firs and some others. My favorite is the Noble Fir, which are shipped from Oregon and can be bought. So I had to choose between my favorite Christmas tree or chopping down my own. read more

Wonderful place to go for trees. We've been going for the past four years and have been able to find a beautiful tree every time. The only reason for the -1 star is that it lacks some additional assistance for some families. Just this past visit, I personally helped a family cut down a particularly tough tree and helped them load. (It was a gorgeous tree just a tad difficult to cut through). It would be a nice added feature if they had 1-2 attendants at each tree location to help assist families with cutting down their beautiful trees and offering to help load. If the family wants it of course. Additionally, as we were driving away, we noticed a tree wrapping option that I don't remember seeing before. I had no idea there was a Christmas tree farm so nearby, until a coworker casually mentioned it to me, assuming I had plans to go. The folks here are super friendly, and will ask nicely if they can give your kids a candy cane when you check out. There were plenty of trees to choose from, lots of baby trees to coo over, and my family enjoyed being out in the fresh air and running around. We also enjoyed getting help from a nice stranger, as our loaner saw was a dud. (Word to the wise -- bring your own!) The best part of all is how fresh and green and lovely our tree is. My husband and I decided we wanted to cut our own tree for the first time this year and we are so happy we did. This tree farm is very well organized and has lots of options. Upon arrival you drive up to a person directing traffic who gives you a saw and map. There are 8 lots to choose from that have Douglas firs, redwood, cedar and Monterey pine trees. We arrived around 9am and there was plenty of parking. We couldn't decide where to stop because all the trees looked awesome! Once we did we walked through the lot and were impressed by how many trees were available and how well shaped they were. Wonderful variety of shapes and sizes! The only thing we questioned was the way they were priced by type of tree rather than size. A 5ft tree is the same price as a 9ft. Checkout was easily done on the way out without leaving your car. They do have pre cut trees and wreaths also available. Highly recommend for a family friendly outing if you are ready to spend at least $87 on a tree no matter the size! read more

Have been here a few times and 2020 is still an excellent experience. Their website indicated that they'd closed early for capacity at some point this past weekend, but we went on a Sunday at 2pm and there was no line to get in. Lot G seemed to have a water line problem this year with drier trees with patchy brown spots but the rest of the lots were greener and healthy. The tallest trees 7'+ are going to be the Monterey pines along the whole length of the road. The trees in the lots were generally 6'6" and under. We picked a 5'6" tree, wrapped it in a blanket, and got it inside our sedan trunk with the seats down. There's no restaurant or trinket store this year due to covid but I think it was less congested this way and easier to get around the property without it. Only down side this year is no bug shaker machine, so give yours a good shake before you bring it in the house! read more

Yep...a tree farm right here.....Oakland to Castro Valley - 20 minutes. Acres of trees...you just have to want Douglas Fir mostly. Normally I don't buy Douglas Fir because I don't like the shaping that happens....but the good news here is that you can find trees that were shaped long ago enough that little buds have formed on the ends of the branches that were snipped and it gives it a really cool look that I like. So I'm really happy - had a great family experience with no frills - just a hand saw and some twine. Big fan. Will definitely be back next year. read more

We went here several years ago and loved the experience and the tree we cut. Then last year they ran out of trees by mid December. This year we drive all the way there on the first day and are told, "come back tomorrow at 9 am" because there are too many people inside? They could have said wait for 10 minutes for people to exit, or they could even have a hot cocoa stand while people are waiting. Years ago, my husband and I started a new tradition when we were "boyfriend & girlfriend." It all started at the CV Christmas Tree Farm when my husband (then BF) tossed around the idea of cutting down our own tree. We stopped by the CV Christmas Tree Farm in our little honda civic, and was given a spool of twine and a saw. What am I supposed to do with a saw? I was such a clueless girl. We picked a monterey pine tree as our first tree, and from there on out, we returned each year to cut down our tree on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. One year we got lucky and chopped down a cedar tree (these are not grown throughout the farm, but we managed to catch one growing among the trees). Fast forward a few years, my husband and I had to move-out of California on military orders. However, we continued our tradition of locating the nearest family owned farm to cut down our tree and we have kept it alive since. This year, we were planning a visit to California to visit family for Thanksgiving, our first time in YEARS. Since we would not be able to spend Christmas with our family, we made it plan to make it a "thankful" and "festive" Thanksgiving. We reached out to Paul at CV Christmas Tree Farm, and he worked with us in letting us come to his farm to pick out our tree! We were finally able to return to the farm that started our family tradition! This time, the tree wasn't for us, but for our 6 year old nephew and 2 year old niece, and letting them experience the joy of cutting down a Christmas tree! We hope that this joyful tradition has spread to our extended family members who had a chance to join in on this occasion. Nonetheless, it would not have happened but for Paul's generosity! Cutting down a tree is not that hard. It helps if you have two people, but admittedly, I went by myself to the CV Christmas Tree Farm one year because my husband had to work. I chopped down a 7ft tree by myself, threw it onto my shoulders, and walked down the hill and shoved that tree into the trunk of my car. I'm telling ya, I don't joke around when it comes to this tradition (haha)! The only downside is that this farm is not equipped with a tree shaker which would be very useful and handy in shaking out dead needles, branches, and bugs! I would very much like to raise funds to be able to give back to the CV Farm, so if anyone would like to join forces and raise money to help this farm get a tree shaker, reach out to me!! A lovely place with very charming staff! Keep in mind, this is totally bare bones. No rides, no food, nothing but a bunch of tree fields on either side of a two-mile long road. When you drive in they give you a map and a saw (and twine if you want it). You have to find a place to park (there are a few little lots but mostly it's by the side of the road, which is totally wide enough for that), walk out into the fields to find the tree, cut it down, *carry* it back to your car (no carts) and tie it on (no help with tying). This was all fine with us, just so you know what to expect. The trees are mostly Douglas Fir, with some Redwood and Monterey Pine. As other Yelpers have said, there are very few, if any, trees over 7 ft. We didn't scour every single field, but that was our impression. The prices may seem high to some, but they are pretty standard for choose and cut lots. We came on a rainy day, so be aware that the road is dirt, and the fields can be muddy, so wear boots! As I said, the staff that greet you, and take your payment at the end, are super friendly and helpful. And it's just a beautiful place to be! But J and I were astounded... she didn't tell us we'd be CUTTING OUR OWN TREE. In the Bay Area. Like 20 minutes from downtown Oakland! A word of advice -- don't follow the Google Map to get here. From Oakland, just take 580 south, get off at Redwood Road, take a left. Then follow the little orange "Christmas Tree Farm" signs to Miller Road. My poor sister was driving all over the outskirts of Castro Valley because she didn't double check the stupid map against reality. I came here earlier today with my boyfriend looking for a Douglas Fir Christmas Tree. It's not hard to miss off the Redwood Road, and you're greeted at the entrance with a map, a saw, and twine. Basically you drive down a dirt road and pull over to different fenced off farm areas full of Christmas trees. There's sooo many to choose from, and it was fun. Up until my boyfriend wanted to be picky and stop by every single freakin' gate and then make our way back to the first one again. Walking through the packed Christmas trees can be picky, so wear jeans and tall boots if you can. It was about $70 for a medium sized tree and the tree holder. Overall, great experience! I grew up going to cut your own christmas tree farms up in the Sierra foothills. Since moving to the Bay Area 20 years ago I haven't done that. I missed it. Every year I tell myself I'm going to drive up to the foothills and do it. But it's a long haul from here. So after a brief search I found this place. It's practically in my back yard. Good selection of Douglas firs and a couple of others kinds of trees. Mostly douglas firs. You grab your saw and some handfuls of twine and off you go. Pull over when you see something you like and cut it down. Bring gloves to handle the tree. We passed it right by the first time we went and had to double back. So keep a look out.
