I had my road bike for the past seven years, and used it only a handful of times outdoors. Even after a professional fitting, it was really not my style. The bike is too aggressive and responsive for my taste. My neighbor highly recommended John from Castro Valley Cyclery. I thought I'll be needing a refit, but after speaking with John he suggested different ways for me to enjoy my ride. I told him my disappointments and how I picture bike riding. He led me to a road bike he is converting and asked if I'm interested to switch to a hybrid. Right then and there I left my road bike so he can begin checking for parts and be able to provide a quote. Fast forward a month after my bike is ready, just in time for the long weekend. Yes, it does take a few phone calls to get to someone, but the staff are all busy working on whatever order or tune up. Supply issues are also real, and John was upfront with that. Kudos to John, Nick, and Max! Thank you!

CVC works on all of my bicycles, it is a great shop!

The bike shop wasn't very nice and charges for many things that the other bike shop in Dublin doesn't charge.

Ask the Community - Castro Valley Cyclery

Is there kids helmets sold here and helmet fitting? Thanks

I put a down payment on a bike last week and was told it would be in sometime this week. I have tried calling this place multiple times over the past week and no one answers and the voice mailbox is full. Is this place still open?

Yes, this place is still open. Not to make excuses for CVC, but yeah, C-19 pandemic did a number on this independent bicycle shop--logistics and inventories be damned. Sometimes one has to be persistent. Kos was flying solo until recently, attending…

On my first ride after I picked the bike up, the brake lines were full of air, enough so that my front brake was not really functional. When I brought it back to the shop, I also mentioned that the chain was skipping off the cogs under load in the higher gears. They took care of the brake problem, but I literally had to go back three times before they warrantied the cassette, which fixed the problem. They just kept adjusting the derailleur. I don't think they test rode it because they would call me and tell me it was fixed. I finally had them go out the back of the shop with me and ride along with me to show them how it skipped. The other issue was the bike started shutting off (it's an E bike) when I would hit rough sections on the trail. I had to take it back multiple times before they finally warrantied the battery and mounts. Each time I took it in they would call me and tell me it was fixed. I would go to start a ride and within a very short period the bike would shut down again. I get that this is a problem with the bike manufacturer and not the service department, but a quick search on Reddit revealed that this was a known problem and a warranty issue. It shouldn't have taken multiple visits and so much time with the bike in the shop to get it corrected. Most recently, I took it in to have the brake lines bled, and when I picked it up, one of the mechanics told me that the back brake was making noise. The service manager said that couldn't be anything they did they just bleed the brakes. However, when I got home, it sounded like a bagpipe every time I hit the brakes and it certainly didn't do that before I took it in. I think the brake pads got contaminated with brake fluid. Also, the retaining clips that keep the pin holding the brake pads from falling off were missing from both brake calipers. I called and spoke to the service manager. He told me that the clips aren't really necessary as long as you keep things tight. I asked if they had them in the shop and if I could come get them and he said he wasn't sure what part I was talking about and he would have to look at them. At that point, I just ordered a new brake pads and clips on Amazon and I'm done with this shop.

Disappointing assembly quality and warranty service…read more I bought a new road bike with Shimano 105 from Alameda Bicycle, but the setup quality was very poor. Right at pickup, the hydraulic brakes felt spongy. The mechanic told me to just ride it out, but after 100 miles of riding, it hadn't improved. During those rides some issues were also revealed: the shifting was rough, the drivetrain was noisy due to poor alignment, and a twisted brake hose was rubbing and scratching the frame. I brought it back under their 90-day guarantee, but the shifting and noise came back worse, and the brakes weren't addressed at all. I eventually spent hours fixing everything myself after purchasing tools and watching countless guides on YouTube. Lots of bubbles came out when I bled the brakes. Now that I properly bled the brakes and adjusted the derailleurs, the bike works great. No thanks to Alameda Bicycle though. Very disappointing build and service for a brand-new purchase.

What stands out to me is there quality of bike services for repairs, customer service for shopping for a new bike, and bike maintenance. They also have a used bikes section (varying inventory) which is terrific for families with young kids that frequently need new bikes without breaking the parent's bank. On the flip side, for the more enthusiasts or adult bikers they have bikes that should satisfy their needs for sure. The staff is helpful and friendly which is something that's never present with online or big box shops so definitely consider this bike shop in the future.

James and his staff was very knowledgeable, courteous, and professional about everything. They really spend the time to answer your questions and not just to "sell you something." The process to buy a bike is that you go to the retailer website (for example, Giant) and order the bike yourself. You have the bike shipped to Centripedal and they will assemble it for you. Afterwards they will call you to come in for a fitting. Then after this you can take the bike home. You get one year of maintenance, parts, and labor for free. Afterwards, you then pay as needed. The turnaround time to get the bike was about a week and James was able to deliver it to me (after fitting) as my car couldn't fit the bike and I lived relatively close by. Verdict: I'm going back in the future!

He's painted frames for me, at least fifty frames for my business (Rivendell), and his work is spectacular. I sympathize with the reviewer who had decal-obtaining problems, but decals don't come easy, especially custom ones, and Rick isn't going to scold his long-time sources for being late. Everybody in the loop has a story and a reason, and sometimes you have to dig deep and wait till your number is called. I have never seen him talk meanly about anybody or any customer. I am not denying the one-starers their experience of feelings, I'm just saying what's been my experience. Also--one final thing: When we have a rush job, or something we really want fast, he tells us we have to wait our turn, too.
