Just ordered from here on the recommendations of a co-worker. This food was awful. Thank god it's on the company dollar. I would have been pissed! A perfectly adequate Mexican spot ideal for Pratt students with a taste for something slightly more authentic than Taco Bell but still without much else that would set it apart from fast food. For your money, Castro's will give you a LOT of food and their sit down area, especially the outdoor patio int he back is surprisingly good. When paired with it's rather vast menu of Mexican foods, Castro's becomes an excellent place to go to in groups as most of the food is as inoffensive as it can get. The service is pretty fast and if you are a Pratt student and you order take-out, the chances are the food will be ready for you by the time you leave your dorm room and reach the place. Generally speaking, I'd avoid the Quesadillas, not because they are poor in quality or anything but just for the price tag, you can get a Burrito that rivals the size of your face for only a few dollars more. If you are looking for authenticity, El Cofre which is only a few more blocks away may be a much better idea but it may also be a bit harder to find with it's indistinct signage. Also the food there may seem a bit dry in comparison to Castro's if you have a fast food defined palette. Also, it's worth noting if you do not like the nasal sensation of cilantro it may be a good idea to tell the person in the order to hold off on it. Castro's loads their food with this herb and it may be a bit off-putting to some, especially if they don't know where exactly the taste is coming from. Considering that the fact that the main competition to Castro's, in terms of unhealthy, filling food on the cheap is White Castle and Crown Fried Chicken, Castro's is a surefire bet. I have been coming here for years. This place serves the best Mexican food near my house. I've tried most of the items on the menu. My favorite dishes have been the Castro Special burrito or the Mexican Omelette burrito. The prices are good and the portions are copious. The salsa is homemade. I will keep coming back. read more

AUTHENTIC!!!! I am totally a Mexican food lover & the food here is outstanding!! Brought a friend here for our b'day & he fell in love. Try the shrimp quesadilla, mouth watering! Unlike Cinco de Mayo on Cortelyou Rd, they serve nachos w/salsa as you wait for your order which is not much of a wait......Sucks that they don't serve sangria but the mango frozen margarita was slamming!! I'm a huge mexican food lover. It's always gets you full and is an ancient hangover cure handed down by the mayan gods. Because of this, I welcome everyone to try this place out with an empty stomach. If you're familiar with the area you know that there's Castro's and if you walk maybe a block or so down there's a hole in the wall mexican place called Restaurant Tepango. For the atmosphere- if you're dining in- I would recommend Castro's. It's a better look and feel. While a little more expensive it's more of the restaurant vibe. The food is pretty tasty. Castro's has all your typical mexican dishes and a pretty decent variety of meats/veggies to fill it, from spicy goat to a very veggie vegetable medley. If you're ordering to go or delivery they're pretty quick while dining in seems to take a little longer for some odd reason but the service isn't terrible, just more priority of to go I suppose. One thing that I will say is that the sour cream is somewhat liquidy not a huge deal but it's not the same viscosity that I'm use to/is typical of s.cream. just an fyi. Restaurant Tepango has the thick creamy s.cream. If you are so inclined, I would recommend you try their vegetarian sopas, veggie burrito (which is HUGE and has a good variety of vegetables), and the cheese enchiladas with green sauce. Those are a few of my faves that are always great. If you're interested in trying their smoothies you can mix and match your flavors which is great but be aware that they aren't very sweet at all, like not at all, if you're a sweets fan like myself you might be disappointed. Food is plentiful and great tasting. Best Mexican restaurant...well since I went to Mexico. Chips are crisp and homemade. The food has a great Mexican aura about it and the atmosphere is nice and cozy. Great selection of Mexican dishes and the fish is awesome along with the beans which are great! For me the beans are the measure of which I can tell if it is authentic or someone just boiling some cans of beans and seasoning and passing them off. This place, not happening. Real Deal! The pork burrito is the way to go. The pork is amazingly delicious and succulent. A burro big enough for two meals and dense enough to fill the black hole which is my stomach. I was wandering around my neighborhood and decided to stop here for breakfast. This place has a lot of seating and even a nice patio out back. The restrooms are large, clean and well stocked! Everyone who worked there was very nice. Food I had: Huevos Con Chorizo egg with mexican sausage, refried beans and jalapenos - Yummy!! I think I should've asked them to not go easy on the jalapenos though. Sopa Azteca: The broth was rich, the avocado was perfectly ripe, and the oaxaca cheese matched it all perfectly. Everything about it was wonderful. My one criticism is that it could stand to be a little cheaper on some things. read more

Red "sauce" was bizarrely flavored, almost rancid. Fish tacos tasted like they'd be left in the sun for a week straight. Tamales were bone dry. Love Castro's. Food is authentic mexican. Fresh ingredients and the food get prepared right in front of you (and yes, I also like to see people putting together your dish). I tried the enchillada verde to get a good comparison meters with other mexican places I tried before. And it was tasty, it looked good and I didn't feel gross in the end. We eat here a lot. Not going to lie, the service isn't outstanding but it's good value and the quesadillas are awesome. We also like the mole enchiladas, chorizo tacos and the tamales. Only thing we don't like is the guacamole... Can't put my finger on why, but it tastes of nothing. Like puréed avocado with no onion or spice. Best Burritos in New York- Hands Down. I've been coming here for like 14 years now and it's a real testiment to the quality of the food and the quality of the vibes to see how much the business has expanded with little and big renovations over time. This place is an institution. My friend C. and I thought, what better place to have a Cinco de Mayo lunch than Castro's on Myrtle between Ryerson and Classon? The place may look like a hole in the wall from the outside but its hidden charm is its colorful backyard which is best enjoyed at this time of year and manages to transport you South and West before you can say margarita. As a vegetarian, their chile relleno cemita is delicious. I'm rather addicted since tasting my first one and I order pick up. The mozzarella they use is thick and meaty and the sandwich has just the right amount of jalapeño. The sandwich is also extremely filling so the price is justified. I've had other food off their extensive menu, but really this is the dish I stick with each time now. Also, if you're looking to get a nice buzz going, their long island ice tea is the way to go. I've heard some of my meat-eating friends blame their food poisoning on this joint though, but every time I've been with people we've all been fine. I have been a happy customer for over 15 years. During that time I've watched this fledgling Mexican (American-Mex style) spot flourish, expanding their menu, their backyard and decor. I'm writing this review during the Covid-19 pandemic because this place has been reliable and consistent, not only for all these many years but also during this unstable time. Excellent food is one easy way to find comfort in the chaos, so here are some of my favorite recommendations; Sopa Azteca -Hands down this place makes it better than anyone else, super thick and like an infusion of health, Shrimp Burrito -done a la Diablo style, very creamy/cheesy and worth the extra price (or try the chorizo burrito for a bit of zing and spice). It'd been several years before I really noticed it there. Veggie tacos! the hard shells are homemade and fairly fresh. I occasionally pick up a tiramisu or one of their fresh smoothies. Pretty good. The take-out/delivery packaging is SO WASTEFUL individually wrapped tacos in styrofoam containers. I went there once as the garbage men were out front cleaning up the sidewalk, one guy grunting "they make too much garbage man!" I shouted back "I know, right!?" Major bummer on that one guys. I have moved all over new york for almost a decade now and I still come back to place every time I'm in the neighborhood or within a quick subway ride. I came here when I first moved to Brooklyn. Since then the place has received a face lift every time I go back. The outdoor patio seating is a great addition. The chicken enchiladas are amazing. Chilaquiles are so good. Wish I could give this place 2.5 stars, because they're good - but not great. They can be great, but they have off days. More and more off days as of late. I was wowed when I first found this place. Delivery was always quick, burritos were good, food was warm. Chicken nuggets taste like McDonalds - which is good and bad! :) My SO liked the toasted sandwiches. Then they started forgetting things. Didn't get a drink I ordered, didn't get any side sauces, etc. The food seemed to be blander and blander. I ended my frequent affair with Castros once I found another Latin American place in the neighborhood with quick delivery. If I was hungover and someone suggested Castros, I would not be opposed, in fact I would gladly order. Absolutely delicious! I'm filled with amazement. They make food that replicates my old babysitter from El Salvador. (She made the best food in the world!) I had the Family Platter. It's enough to feed about 3 people. The chicken was flavored so deliciously, down to the bone. Everything was just superb. Their tacos are pretty bad though. I had their chicken tacos recently, and was more than disappointed. (More than once) You'd probably ask "How is a Mexican restaurant that can't make decent tacos good?" But trust me. This is one of the most authentic Mexican Resturants in the in the Clinton Hill Area, they have been a in the neighborhood before any of these new establishments and the food is outstanding. I don't eat meat, so most of the menu is pretty lost on me. With that said, the burritos here are pretty boring. The vegetables inside taste like they were from a frozen mixed bag and the rice/beans are borderline tasteless. The nachos are super small and made me sad when they came out. Everything seems over-priced. As I'm writing this review, I thinking about lowering my review to two stars. I think everything here just needs to be less bland. Take a chance Castro's! *I remembered that you get free chips/salsa, so I moved it back up to 3 stars. The chips are actually pretty good. Okay, so... I hate doing this. No one ever wants to write a bad review, but I feel compelled to help others decide on where to EAT. My boyfriend and I ordered the vegetarian burrito's and another veggie dish which I cannot recall at the moment. The food was absolutely disgusting! As stated in another review, they used either frozen or canned vegetables (which somehow made my boyfriend sick for a DAY!) The quality of the food is 100% worst than any Frozen Mexican you can get in a grocery store! I think they should be ashamed of themselves. I will not recommend this place as long as it carries that name and is under the same management! Save your money! Go to a grocery store and buy a frozen dinner before eating here! Good price for the food. Not super authentic, nor farm fresh, though above and beyond chipotle. Not like I care for chipotle either. Castro's food has changed for the worse. I arrived at 7. Placed my entree at 7:30. Three Tacos. Took approximately 45 minutes from kitchen to table. That's 3 tacos. Equating 15 minutes per taco!! Ordered some appetizers as well. They arrived in a timely fashion. I had to ask for silverware when the food arrived. You kidding me??? Water refills were like pulling teeth. I asked for a pour yet the people that accompanied me were not offered. I asked for a pitcher of water. Problem solved. Ok. Ok. This is not a 5 star restaurant. Though lack of simple courtesy/meeting the requirements of your job, was beyond lacking. Two plus hours for a casual meal. Never again. I used to frequent them many years ago. The service was day and night. I believe they are focusing more on deliveries, then patrons at the restaurant. Solution - open up a similar restaurant. Same prices. Better staff. Castro's will have no other option but to shape up. They have that area on lock with no competition. Complacency does not work well with restaurants. Kind of a no brainier. read more

Best tacos in Brooklyn and maybe NYC! This place is a go to for me and my best friend at least once a month. The staff is very nice and accommodating. Their hard shell tacos are unreal. Solid Mexican food. After getting some takeout from here about an hour ago, I'm kicking myself for not reviewing this earlier. The food and service is always consistent.
