We came here for Valentine's dinner. Kochitl serves Mexican comfort food and favorites in a homey and unpretentious setting. Our Mexican dinner will not be complete without a glass or two of classic margaritas, and it was more enjoyable together with a plateful of fried calamari served with garlic mayo. We then ordered beef and chicken fajitas served with rice, beans, and corn tortillas and Camarones a la Mexicana; shrimp cooked in jalapeño, tomato, and onion salsa. All the dishes came in a timely fashion, and they were all delicious. My only qualm is that all dishes are overly covered with peppers and onions. Overall, the staff is genuinely helpful, friendly, and attentive. I will come back to this restaurant to try their other menu. But I will probably tell the cook to take it easy on peppers and onions. read more

As is the case with nearly every restaurant on Smith Street, I've been here a couple of times. So I feel confident in saying that Xochitl is solid. I haven't yet branched out into the chile rellenos or the surf and turf or the other less common menu items, but they've got just about all the things you're looking for in a classic Mexican spot: Fresh chips and guacamole. Discounted margaritas during happy hour. Tacos of all kinds. Sizzling fajitas. French fries for you kid that won't even eat a cheese quesadilla (that may just be a me problem). And we've usually enjoyed our food. I love the guac and chips. The carnitas are great. The corn is slathered in mayo, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. And in previous visits, the staff was on point and happy we were there/enjoying ourselves. That said, this past weekend we came by for lunch, and the tacos were a little disappointing; the proteins tasted a little less fresh (except the carnitas, which was still the best taco we had by a solid margin), and the service was pretty surly, as if we were putting them out by being there at all. I'm hoping it was just an off day, because it's nice to have a good Mexican spot right here for the family. read more

Stopped by here at 8pm. Since they close at 9 i asked it my group could be seated and they said yes which was very nice of them since we were a group of 6. I ordered calamari and enchiladas de pollo de mole. For a drink i got a regular mojito. The mojito was good, it was more limey than minty but still delicious. The calamari was surprising because they were a little smaller than what i see but it was crispy and good on top of a bed of fajitas which was interesting. The sauce was not tomato base but more of the latin chipotle mayo ketchup blend which was really good with the calamari. The chicken enchiladas de mole was good and came with a side of rice and bean of your choice, which i choose black beans. The chicken inside the enchilada was cubed which i found different since it's normally shredded not that i minded since i liked the flavor of the chicken. I do wish the mole was a bit spicier if felt like it was missing heat. Overall the place was nice very affordable and clean. Would go back if im in the area. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Xochitl Taqueria. The service was great, and Vanessa was very accommodating . I came towards the end of their happy hour and tried margaritas. We also ordered chips and salsa. The chips had a hint of spicy seasoning. It came with three different salsa our favorite was the light red one. My friend and I tried tacos. I had the regular tacos and she had the mx tacos which were smaller and with a crunchy shell. We both ordered the Barbacoa tacos , mx and regular soft shells and they were great. Well seasoned, stuffed to the top and juicy. I also enjoyed the fish taco with the sauce. We also got the margarita flight. We tried the coconut, passionfruit, guava, and pineapple and. Then after the flight we had two more margaritas. Ginger and spicy. The spicy margarita is spicy so fair warning.. this place was very clean cute with Mexican decor such as a sombrero and the Mexican map. They have decorations hanging from the walls. I'll definitely come back here. The prices are very affordable. During happy hour margaritas are $7 regular $8 flavor from 4pm-7pm Monday to Friday. read more

While I was visiting New York, me and my son went here to get a quick dinner. He LOVES tacos. The food was okay, I had a chicken soup, it was seasoned well, the portion was a little smaller than what i anticipated. Nothing special I probably could make a better one at home. My sons tacos were okay. He was a little turned off about the chipotle mayo but he is 15 years old so he can be fickle. The service was good and the restaurant was welcoming. Yummy and affordable burritos! I got the Smith St Burrito with steak and was so impressed it was $11! It was a refreshing burrito with very fresh, finely chopped lettuce, tomato, and fresh guac. I thought it could use a bit more steak (and have had better carne asada truthfully) but honestly can't complain for the value. It was filling and I could barely finish all of it! The interior was comfortable and clean, and the service was friendly. I came with two friends on a Sunday, right when they opened, and we walked in without a reservation. It didn't get too busy while we were there, but a lot of people did stop by for pickup orders. Overall super happy with the burrito and would come back to try their tacos! read more

Shrimp burrito was not worth the price: 5 shrimp (one of which tasted off), blandly seasoned filling, and fairly small. But the real kicker was when my partner got only 2 bites into their diablo shrimp burrito and pulled out both a staple and a shrimp tail from their mouth! My friend and I came here for lunch on a slow afternoon when we had a Monday off from work. The place is spacious and festively decorated with bright colors, flags, inspirational sayings, as well as artwork. We were served complimentary chips and salsa, which were soo good! The chips had a wonderful crunch to them and simply addicting. Of course, I had the Horchata for my drink and it was the real deal - meaning no powdered mix was used. It was creamy smooth, delightfully cinnamony, and just the right amount of sweetness. I ordered the Chimichanga, which is a crispy burrito and I selected fried fish as my choice of meat. The burrito was huge, and came packed with rice, topped with enchilada sauce and melted cheese. I loved the fish, which was actually still slightly crispy even drenched in the well seasoned, flavorful sauces. The fish was also tender and absolutely delicious! There was tons of satisfying melty cheese over crunchy shell. All the ingredients worked perfectly together, creating mouthwatering bites. Service was great! Our waitress was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Yum yum yum! This place is a great taco spot! It's rare for a place to offer chimichangas nowadays but it is a pretty mighty one with huge amounts of cheese on it. Even though it looks huge it actually isn't as much portion wise compared to other Mexican restaurants nearby like Castro's or Los Pollitos III on Myrtle. The tacos were good as I had the Al pastor, steak and fish one, the fish came fried which is not my preference but if it is yours I would totally recommend it. It reminds me of a mozzarella cheese stick breading. The steak is not hard and it's very juicy which I am so grateful for... I'm not a hard meat lover. The al pastor had the best flavor and the pineapple was decently spread out in the taco so the flavor remains in the few bites I took. The real winner was their green sauce. All the tacos were not that amazing until I put the green sauce on it. I totally recommend getting that one for the chips and salsa as well. When you order chips and salsa they will come with three if you want the mix but I would say the red sauces do not really taste that big of a difference. read more

Chicagoan here, went out last night looking for a bite to eat and landed on Xochitl. I'm shocked to see this place has good reviews as our food wasn't good. My girlfriend order a fried fish taco and 2 chicken tacos. While she enjoyed the fried fish taco, the chicken tacos were awful. She commented on their smell and the dryness of the chicken. So, she threw the chicken tacos away. I ordered a steak burrito, after getting my order wrong, they had an attitude when I called it out. Last night my boyfriend and I decided to order from here because seamless had a $6 off coupon and we love Mexican so we figured why not! We got a ton of food (too much). My boyfriend got the tinga chicken quesadilla and a side of rice, I got the carne asada tacos, and we split the super nachos. It was pretty good! The nachos were a little soggy but that's to be expected with delivery. Other than that the nachos were amazing and they were not stingy at all with the toppings. With that said I bet they're a perfect 10/10 if you got them in restaurant. The quesadilla and tacos were good, nothing spectacular but good if you're looking for some classic Mexican food. The server was helpful with answering our questions and was attentive. It's a little bit of a hole in the wall so there aren't a ton of tables and it is lit very well so there isn't an intimate feeling to it. I will NEVER return to this restaurant. Today at lunch, I watched the server brutally smash in the skull of a tiny, infant field mouse with a broom pail in the middle of the restaurant. We were the only customers in the restaurant and when I realized what was happening, I got up to help catch the tiny, adorable mouse in cup to take home and care for. Mind you - this was not a rat, but a tiny infant version of the little mice you can buy at pet stores - unbelievably adorable. The staff kept apologizing to us, and we kept saying no, we love animals - let us take it. When we were clearly being ignored my boyfriend actually said, "She will cry if you kill that mouse." I very nearly got it in a cup as a staff member scared it from behind a bench, scurrying to catch it before they killed it, but as it got passed me, the server screamed, "KILL IT!" and smashed it's tiny skull open against the floor. She seemed to think it was fucking joke, giggling saying I'm sorry as I started to well up. My first pets growing up were these little mice, before we had the space to take in cats and dogs. Even if you're not an extreme animal lover like I am, I can't imagine anyone else would not have been disgusted and distraught by this experience. Smashing open the brains of a small animal in the middle of a dining room is hardly acceptable to even the least empathetic person. I proceeded to cry for the following four blocks, upset at being denied the chance to offer one small act of kindness to a tiny, helpless creature in the world because people find it easier to be fearful and violent.
